CSI Wick Lab · 8 cm Jars

64 g
of Sandalwood for the four-candle test · 500 g is the smallest size in stock on 1 October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My 8 cm jar with 8% Lavender reaches the edges, but the same wick leaves unmelted wax with Sandalwood. What should I change? Test the wick for the Sandalwood candle only, with Lavender kept beside it as a control. Changing only the oil changed the burn, so the oil is the variable; the question is whether one rung up fixes Sandalwood without over-heating the jar.

What is the test? A 2 × 2 border bracket: your house wick and Cotton Braided, each with Sandalwood and with Lavender, two candles a cell, eight in all. 8 cm sits on the border of the Cotton Braided page's "exceeding 8 cm" wording, so the Lavender cells tell you whether the bigger wick is simply too big for this jar.

How do I buy Sandalwood for it? The 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock on 1 October 2026, so first use any Sandalwood left from the batch that ringed. Otherwise the 500 g (₹2,513.40) is the smallest size in stock: four 200 g candles at 8% use 64 g (₹321.72 of oil) and leave 436 g, enough for 27 more candles if the wick passes.

What does the bracket cost? About ₹1,505.92 in materials used, in your own jars, with Sandalwood counted at the 500 g price. Cash from nothing is ₹4,035.20, or ₹1,521.80 if you already own the Sandalwood. CSI lists no 8 cm jar.
The short answer
The verdict: change the wick for Sandalwood only if a controlled bracket says so. Don't change the Lavender candle, and don't change the load first: Sandalwood at 8% is inside its page's "up to 10% for soy".
The test: house wick v Cotton Braided × Sandalwood v Lavender, 2 candles each, 200 g at 8%, same wax, jar, pour and cure.
The rule (judgement): Sandalwood on Cotton Braided reaches the edge and Lavender on Cotton Braided shows heat = an oil-specific wick for Sandalwood. Both fine on Cotton Braided = one wick may serve both. Sandalwood still ringed on Cotton Braided = not a single-wick answer at CSI's rungs.
The honest limit: Cotton Braided is described for candles "exceeding 8 cm"; there is no sized, tabbed wick between C2 and it. Sandalwood 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock on 1 October 2026; the 500 g is the smallest size in stock.
Buying Sandalwood for a four-candle test (64 g) 200 g candles at 8% = 16 g each. The 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock on 1 October 2026. CSI live pricing. Cash out for the test 15 g out of stock on 1 October 2026 50 g out of stock on 1 October 2026 100 g out of stock on 1 October 2026 500 g ₹2,513.40 1 kg ₹5,026.80 Oil cost per 200 g candle at 8% 15 g out of stock on 1 October 2026 50 g out of stock on 1 October 2026 100 g out of stock on 1 October 2026 500 g ₹80.43 1 kg ₹80.43 Sandalwood left after the test 15 g out of stock on 1 October 2026 50 g out of stock on 1 October 2026 100 g out of stock on 1 October 2026 500 g 436 g 1 kg 936 g Dark bar = the 500 g, the smallest pack in stock. It and the 1 kg are both ₹5.03 a gram, so the 1 kg is twice the cash for no saving. Own Sandalwood already? Test with that first.
What each Sandalwood pack means for the 64 g that four 200 g test candles need at 8%, with the 15 g, 50 g and 100 g out of stock on 1 October 2026. The 500 g is the smallest pack left and covers the test with 436 g to spare; the 1 kg is twice the cash for the same price per gram. Prices are CSI live pricing; left-over grams are simple subtraction.
Straight answer
My 8 cm jar with 8% Lavender reaches the edges perfectly, but the same wick leaves unmelted wax with Sandalwood. What should I change?
Change the wick for the Sandalwood candle, but only after a small bracket proves it, and keep the Lavender candle exactly as it is. Your own results already show the oil is the variable: same jar, wax, load and wick, different pool. Heavier, woody oils are commonly harder for a given wick to melt out to the glass; that is a tendency, not CSI data. The next rung up at CSI is Cotton Braided, whose page describes it for candles "exceeding 8 cm", so at 8 cm you are testing it at its border. Pour eight 200 g candles at 8%: house wick and Cotton Braided, each with Sandalwood and with Lavender, two per cell. If Sandalwood on Cotton Braided reaches the glass by burn 3 while Lavender on Cotton Braided runs hot, give Sandalwood its own wick. If both oils burn well on Cotton Braided, one wick may serve both, after full life. If Sandalwood still leaves a ring on Cotton Braided, the answer is not a single CSI wick; look at load, cure and double-wicking next. For the Sandalwood cells, use oil you already have if you can: the 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock on 1 October 2026, so the smallest you can buy is the 500 g, which covers the test with 436 g to spare.
One line: the oil changed the burn, so test the wick for that oil, with the oil that works kept alongside as a control.
For the Sandalwood cells: Sandalwood you already own, or the Sandalwood 500 g (₹2,513.40; the 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock on 1 October 2026, so it is the smallest size you can buy), and a 10-pack of Cotton Braided (₹120.00). Add Lavender and C2 only if you have run out of the ones already on your bench.
Sandalwood 500 g — ₹2,513.40

Same wick, two oils: what the difference tells you

You have already run half an experiment. Lavender is your control.

When one oil reaches the glass and another doesn't on the same wick, the wick is not "wrong"; it is right for one system and short for the other. That is useful, because it tells you where to look: the oil, not the jar, the wax or your pouring. If you poured both from the same wax bag, at the same load, into the same jar batch, cured them the same and burned them side by side, you have isolated the oil. If you didn't, do that first; it costs two candles and might dissolve the problem.

Why would sandalwood melt out less? The honest answer is that CSI publishes no measured wick data for any oil, so we can only give you the tendency: heavier woody and resinous oils are commonly linked to smaller flames, more carbon on the wick, or a pool that reaches the glass later than a light herbal like lavender does on the same wick. The Sandalwood page describes a "single-note sandalwood" with "a smooth woody aroma"; the Lavender page describes "fresh lavender top notes" over a "soft musk base". Structure, not name, is what tends to matter.

Two things you should not change first. The load: Sandalwood at 8% is inside its page's "up to 10% for soy" and CSI 464's "up to 10%". Dropping to 6% might help the burn and will cost scent; whether that trade is worth it is a load step-down question (the 10% coffee load step-down shows the method). The Lavender candle: it passes. A bracket that changes the wick for both oils at once tells you nothing about either.

Seen this at 7 cm with mushrooming instead?
Sandalwood at 10% that mushrooms early in a 7 cm jar is a different question: whether the wick or the oil is to blame, answered with an unscented candle in the three-candle attribution triad. This page is the 8 cm under-melt: the wick is not reaching far enough with this oil.

Exactly 8 cm: a border case for CSI's wicks

The only CSI wick page that names a big diameter draws its line exactly where your jar is.

At CSI, one rung up from Eco C2 is Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made, "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". There is no sized, tabbed wick between them. So "one size up" is a real step, and at 8 cm it lands on the edge of the range its own page describes. That is why the bracket keeps Lavender on Cotton Braided too: if Cotton Braided over-heats Lavender, you learn the jar is too small for it in general, and a Sandalwood pass has to be watched closely to the bottom.

Geometry · 8 cm, read two ways
π r² on the inside radius · 0.35 cm wall assumed · all figures declared
Figure 8 cm outside 8 cm inside
Inside diameter 7.3 cm 8.0 cm
Cotton Braided page: "exceeding 8 cm" below the described range on the border, not exceeding
Pool surface 41.85 cm² 50.27 cm² (20% more; 30.6% more than a 7 cm inside)
Rule-of-thumb first-burn time about 2.9 h about 3.2 h

Measure the inside at the rim and at mid-height before you pour (why the outside figure misleads). A ring that looks thin in a wide jar is still a big share of the candle: in a 7.3 cm inside, an average 3 mm ring leaves 16% of the surface solid.

Argued against our own interest: CSI lists no 8 cm jar, and our wick range has a gap exactly where an 8 cm Sandalwood candle may need it. If both Sandalwood cells fail (ringed on the house wick, hot on Cotton Braided), we don't have a sized wick between them. We would rather you tell us, or test another supplier's in-between size as a labelled extra cell, than force one of ours to fit.

The 2 × 2 border bracket

Two wicks, two oils, two candles each. Eight candles answer three questions.

The three questions: does one rung up fix Sandalwood; does it over-heat this jar (Lavender tells you); and can one wick serve both oils. Everything else is held: the same wax bag, 8% of total weight for both oils (16 g of oil + 184 g of wax in a 200 g fill, our worked example for 8 cm), jar batch, pour temperature, cure and room.

S-B (×2) Sandalwood Cotton Braided Whether one rung up reaches the glass with this oil
L-H (×2) Lavender house (C2) Confirms the control still passes in this batch
L-B (×2) Lavender Cotton Braided Whether Cotton Braided is too much wick for this jar in general
1
Pour all eight in one sessionLabel bases S-H-a to L-B-b. Weigh each jar empty first. CSI 464's page states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C"; if your jar states no heat rating, pour at the low end and pre-warm clean jars (our judgement). Trim the Cotton Braided at setting: its page gives the wick as 10.16 cm tall.
2
Cure to the longer pageThe Sandalwood page states a 48–72 hour cure for soy; the Lavender page states none in the text we captured. Cure all eight the same, and many makers wait about a week.
3
Burn together, 3–4 hours, still airTrim to about 5–6 mm, space the candles apart, and count a session only if it runs at least about 3 hours for this width (judgement: roughly the rule-of-thumb 2.9–3.2 h).
4
Log burns 1–3 at the end of each sessionIs the glass wet all round? If not, the widest ring in millimetres. Trimmed flame height, any carbon cap, any soot on the glass. Photograph each from above with a ruler across the rim.
5
Read the cells after burn 3Use the table below. A cell passes when both candles have the glass wet all round by the end of burn 3 with a trimmed flame of about 5 cm or under and no soot.
6
Carry the winner to the bottomWhatever wins burn 3 still has to pass the lower third before you approve it: the one-rung-up full-life pair sets out the lower-third checks for an 8 cm candle.

Reading the four cells

The Lavender cells are not decoration. They tell you what a pass on Sandalwood means.
Decision after burn 3 · our judgement, labelled
"Pass" = both candles wet the glass all round by burn 3, trimmed flame about 5 cm or under, no soot · "Hot" = flame above about 5 cm, soot, or a heavy mushroom

Two wick SKUs for one jar is a real cost in a small business: separate stock, separate labels, a chance of mix-ups. It is still better than one wick that is wrong for half your range. How to group many oils onto as few wicks as possible is the family-grouping post; here you are just settling two.

A second wick in an 8 cm jar is possible, but it is a different candle. CSI's Steel Wick Holder (₹250.00 for 5, ₹50.00 each) has "3-hole layout fits single, double, or triple wick setups" and fits jars "up to 9 cm wide" by its page, with the holes in a line. Treat a double-wick Sandalwood candle as a new bracket, not a tweak.

Don't use 10% to rescue a stalled pool
Raising Sandalwood to its page top of 10% adds 4 g of oil per 200 g candle (20 g instead of 16 g; ₹20.11 at the 500 g price) and commonly makes a flame smaller, not bigger. It would make the stall worse and cost more. One change at a time; the wick is the one under test.

Buying Sandalwood while 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out

When the smallest pack in stock is 500 g, use what you own first and plan the leftover.

On 1 October 2026, Sandalwood Fragrance Oil is in stock only at 500 g (₹2,513.40) and 1 kg (₹5,026.80); the 15 g (₹93.22), 50 g (₹271.40) and 100 g (₹502.68) are out of stock. Your four Sandalwood candles need 64 g (16 g each).

Sandalwood routes for a four-candle test

1 kg ₹5,026.80 ₹5.03 ₹80.43 936 g

The 500 g and 1 kg are the same ₹5.03 a gram, so the 1 kg saves nothing per gram and doubles the cash. Argued against our own interest: ₹2,513.40 is a lot to spend on an oil whose test may end with "Sandalwood needs a wick we don't stock". If you have Sandalwood left from your first batch, run the Sandalwood cells with that: it is the oil under test, and the bracket needs nothing more. If you buy the 500 g, the 436 g left after the test is 27 more 200 g candles at 8% once a wick passes full life. Don't swap in a different woody oil to save money: the question is how Sandalwood itself melts out, and another oil cannot answer it. For the 15 g or 100 g, ask us on WhatsApp about restock; we do not publish dates.

The CSI principle
When the oil changes the burn, test the wick for that oil, with the one that works beside it.
Lavender is your control. At exactly 8 cm, CSI's rung up sits on its own page's border, so the Lavender cells tell you what a Sandalwood pass is worth. Test with the Sandalwood you have before buying more.
"Your best burning candle is the most useful thing on your test bench. Keep it beside the one that isn't."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils, wicks and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you to use Sandalwood you already own before buying our 500 g, not to buy the 1 kg, that our wick range has no sized step between C2 and Cotton Braided, and that CSI lists no 8 cm jar.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026. Stock was checked per size: Sandalwood 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock on 1 October 2026 (rechecked that day) and the Eco C1 10-pack on 29 September 2026, all flagged wherever they appear; every other size shown is in stock. Load, vanillin, cure and wick wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The cell pass rules, the 0.35 cm wall, the 200 g fill and the decision table are our judgement or worked examples; oil-family wick tendencies, flame height and full-pool times are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data; CSI publishes no wick-performance data. Frequently asked questions

Why does my sandalwood candle not melt to the edges when lavender does?
Heavier woody oils are commonly harder for the same wick to melt out to the glass than light herbals; it is a tendency, not a rule. If the jar, wax, load and wick were the same, the oil is the variable, so test the wick for that oil with lavender alongside as a control.
Do different fragrance oils need different wick sizes?
Sometimes. Many makers find heavier, resinous or vanillin-rich oils need a wick change in the same jar. Test each oil that behaves differently on your house wick; don't change the wick for oils that already pass.
What wick for an 8 cm jar with sandalwood fragrance?
There is no fixed answer. With CSI wicks, bracket your house wick (for example Eco C2) against Cotton Braided, whose page describes it for candles exceeding 8 cm, two candles each, and judge burn 3 and then the full life.
Should I increase the fragrance load if my candle doesn't reach the edges?
No. More oil commonly makes a flame smaller or sootier, which slows the pool further. A pool that doesn't reach the edges is a wick, session-length or centring question first.
Is Sandalwood fragrance oil in stock at CSI?
On 1 October 2026 only the 500 g and 1 kg are in stock; the 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock. For a small test, the 500 g covers four 200 g candles at 8% (64 g) with 436 g to spare; use any Sandalwood you already own first.
Can I use one wick for all fragrances in the same jar?
Often for several of them; don't assume it for all. Burn every oil on your house wick first and give a separate bracket only to the ones that fail, with an oil that passes kept alongside as a control.
Before you change the wick for every scent
Eight candles, two oils, two wicks: about ₹1,505.92 in materials.
Keep Lavender as the control, give Sandalwood the rung up, and read all four cells after burn 3. Use Sandalwood you already own; otherwise the 500 g, the smallest size in stock, covers the test with 436 g to spare. Send us your cells on WhatsApp.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on 7.5–8 cm jars with a single wick (4221–4240). It owns a border-case bracket at exactly 8 cm for a heavy oil (house wick and Cotton Braided, Sandalwood and a Lavender control, two candles a cell) and the buy-for-the-test maths while Sandalwood 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g). The 200 g fill and 0.35 cm wall are labelled worked-example assumptions; pool area = π r² on the inside radius. Ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%, pour 80–90°C; Sandalwood up to 10% for soy; Lavender 6–10%): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Flame height (about 2.5–5 cm) and full-pool time (about an hour per 2.5 cm) are commonly cited rules of thumb; oil-family wick behaviour is a tendency. The cell rules and decision table are editorial judgement. Costs exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
