When to Buy Bulk · Growing Sales
Rising sales make every bigger buy look safe, because next month will use it anyway. That is only true if next month arrives as forecast. The money question is simpler than it looks: a bigger buy saves money only where the price per unit falls, and only for as many months as that fall can pay for.
8.5 months
of steady use a 5.6% price break (Natural Soy Pearl, 1 kg → 5 kg) can pay to hold at an example 1.5% a month holding cost · a flat-priced item pays for none · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
When does a larger buy save money? Only when the price per unit falls with the bigger pack. A saving of s% pays for holding stock up to 1 + 2s ÷ r months ahead, where r is your monthly holding rate. With no break, the answer is one month: buying ahead only adds holding cost.

Which CSI materials have a break worth buying ahead for? Few. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, CSI 464 and Eco Candle Wicks are flat per unit. Natural Soy Pearl drops 5.6% at 5 kg. Some oils drop 10–22% at 500 g or 1 kg (Pumpkin Spice, Honeydew Melon). Beyond the listed packs, prices are quoted on WhatsApp.

How do I avoid excess stock while growing? Order each month's forecast, rounded to the cheapest pack, and raise the order as sales rise. Before any forward buy, run the stall test: if growth stopped today, how long would it last? A three-month forecast buy at 10% growth lasts 3.3 months if sales go flat.

What growth rate does this use? An example of 10% a month from 150 candles, which is the reader's kind of figure, not a market statistic. Replace it with your own last three months.
The short answer
Rule: Months you can buy at once = 1 + 2 × saving ÷ monthly holding rate. Then cap it at what you would still use if growth stopped.
Flat items: Chunks, CSI 464, Eco wicks, most oils above 100 g: order each month's need; grow the order as usage grows. I'm Using 10 Kg of Soy Wax Every Month — How Much Should I Order at Once so I Save on Cost Without Holding Unnecessary Inventory? sets the order size.
Items with a break: Natural Soy Pearl (5 kg), CSI 468 (5 kg), oils such as Pumpkin Spice (1 kg) and Honeydew Melon (500 g). A 1 Kg Fragrance Oil Is Much Cheaper per Gram than 100 g — How Quickly Should I be Using a Fragrance Before Moving to the Larger Pack? lists every oil's kilo break.
Shop: Natural Soy Pearl · Pumpkin Spice · Honeydew Melon · rising-volume quotes on WhatsApp.
How far ahead a price break lets you buy — before holding cost eats the saving Months of steady use worth buying in one go = 1 + 2 × saving ÷ monthly holding rate (example 1.5%). Flat price = 1.0 month. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 1 kg → 5 kg 1.0 mo · saves 0.0% CSI 464, 1 kg → 10 kg 1.0 mo · saves 0.0% Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468, 1 kg → 5 kg 3.7 mo · saves 2.0% Natural Soy Pearl, 1 kg → 5 kg 8.5 mo · saves 5.6% Eco Candle Wicks, 10 → 1,000 1.0 mo · saves 0.0% Pumpkin Spice oil, 500 g → 1 kg 14.3 mo · saves 10.0% Honeydew Melon oil, 100 g → 500 g 30.3 mo · saves 22.0% These are ceilings from holding cost alone. Your real limit is shorter: the months you would still use if growth stopped today.
A price break buys you time on the shelf. At an example holding cost of 1.5% a month, Natural Soy Pearl's 5.6% break pays for holding up to about 8.5 months of steady use; Honeydew Melon's 22.0% break at 500 g pays for far more. Flat-priced items pay for nothing beyond the month. In practice demand risk, storage and freshness set a much shorter limit than these ceilings.
Straight answer
My candle sales are growing every month. How do I know when buying larger raw-material quantities saves money rather than creating excess stock?
A larger buy saves money only when the price per unit falls with the pack, and only for as long as that fall covers the cost of holding the extra stock. The test is one line: a saving of s% pays for buying up to 1 + 2s ÷ r months of steady use at once, where r is your monthly holding rate. On CSI's listed prices, pulled 24 September 2026, most materials have no break to pay for anything: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, CSI 464 and Eco Candle Wicks cost the same per unit in every pack, and most oils cost the same per gram at 1 kg as at 100 g. For those, growth is a reason to raise your monthly order, not to buy months ahead. A few items do break: Natural Soy Pearl by 5.6% at 5 kg (worth up to about 8.5 months at an example 1.5% monthly rate), Pumpkin Spice by 10.0% at 1 kg, Honeydew Melon by 22.0% at 500 g. Those ceilings come from holding cost alone. Then run the stall test: if growth stopped today, how long would the buy last? A three-month buy forecast at 10% monthly growth lasts 3.3 months if sales go flat. Buy ahead only to the shorter of the two limits.
One line: growth justifies bigger rolling orders; only a real price break justifies buying months ahead — and only as far as a stall would still use.
If your wax is Natural Soy Pearl, growth has one clear pack move: never buy it in 1 kg bags again. ₹450.00 a kilo in 1 kg, ₹424.80 from 5 kg. Above 5 kg the rate is the same at 10 kg and 50 kg, so let the bag count grow with your sales rather than jumping to a sack.
Buy Natural Soy Pearl 5 kg

The break-even rule

A bigger pack is a deal only if it is cheaper per unit. Everything else is paying early.

Suppose a bigger pack saves s% on the price per unit, and holding stock costs you r% of its value a month. Holding cost is what cash in idle stock costs you or could earn elsewhere, plus storage and damage risk; this page uses an example 1.5% a month (18% a year), which you should replace with your own. If you buy M months of steady use at once instead of one month at a time, your average stock rises by (M − 1) ÷ 2 months of usage. Over the M months that extra stock costs r × (M − 1) ÷ 2 × M months of usage value, while the saving is s × M months of usage value. They are equal when M = 1 + 2s ÷ r.

Example holding rate 1.5% a month — replace with your own · per-unit savings from CSI listed prices, 24–25 September 2026
How many months ahead each listed break can pay for
Pack step Saving per unit Months of use you can buy at once (holding cost only)
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 1 kg → 5 kg 0.0% 1.0 (no break: buy for convenience only)
CSI 464, 1 kg → 10 kg 0.0% 1.0 (no break: buy for convenience only)
Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468, 1 kg → 5 kg 2.0% 3.7
Natural Soy Pearl, 1 kg → 5 kg 5.6% 8.5
Eco Candle Wicks, 10 → 1,000 0.0% 1.0 (no break: buy for convenience only)
Pumpkin Spice oil, 500 g → 1 kg 10.0% 14.3
Honeydew Melon oil, 100 g → 500 g 22.0% 30.3

Two things follow. First, for the flat-priced items, which are most of what a candle maker buys, the rule says one month. Buying ahead never saves money on them; it only moves cash forward. Growth does not change that. Second, where a break exists, holding cost is rarely the tight limit. Even Natural Soy Pearl's modest 5.6% pays for eight and a half months of stock at the example rate. What stops you long before that is demand: stock that growth was supposed to use and did not. That is the stall test below.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A growing business is the easiest customer to sell a big order to, because next month always looks bigger. On our listed prices, most of what you buy from us costs the same per unit in any pack, so buying ahead on a growth forecast earns you nothing on those lines except a bigger cash outlay. Grow your monthly order with your sales. Buy ahead only on the lines with a real break, and only as far as a stall would still use.
Use your real holding rate
If the business runs on a credit line, use its monthly rate. If spare cash would otherwise sit in the bank, use what it earns there. If the cash could fund marketing that is already paying back well, the true rate is higher still. A higher r shortens every figure in the table; a lower r lengthens it.

A growth forecast, priced

Here is an example business: 150 candles this month, growing 10% a month, 200 g container candles at an 8% load, Natural Soy Pearl wax at ₹424.80 a kilo in 5 kg bags, a 4% allowance for pour loss and rejects. The 10% is an example of the reader's own trend, not a market figure. The table shows six months of wax and oil, the rolling monthly order, and the cumulative wax.

Example: 150 candles, +10% a month · 184 g wax and 16 g oil per candle + 4% · Natural Soy Pearl 5 kg bags at ₹2,124.00
Six months of growth, ordered month by month
Month Candles Wax needed Rolling wax order ₹ Oil needed (all scents) Cumulative wax
Month 1 150 28.70 kg 6 × 5 kg ₹12,744.00 2.50 kg 28.70 kg
Month 2 165 31.57 kg 7 × 5 kg ₹14,868.00 2.75 kg 60.28 kg
Month 3 182 34.73 kg 7 × 5 kg ₹14,868.00 3.02 kg 95.01 kg
Month 4 200 38.21 kg 8 × 5 kg ₹16,992.00 3.32 kg 133.22 kg
Month 5 220 42.03 kg 9 × 5 kg ₹19,116.00 3.65 kg 175.24 kg
Month 6 242 46.23 kg 10 × 5 kg ₹21,240.00 4.02 kg 221.47 kg

Month 1 needs 28.70 kg of wax; month 6 needs 46.23 kg. Ordered month by month in 5 kg bags, every kilo costs ₹424.80, the listed rate from 5 kg. Buying all six months now (221.47 kg) would cost the same per kilo, because the 10 kg and 50 kg packs are priced at the same ₹424.80. It would only put about ₹95,580.00 on the shelf today instead of ₹12,744.00.

What about three months at once? That is 95.01 kg for ₹42,480.00. Against rolling monthly orders, it adds about ₹643.81 of holding cost over the quarter at the example rate, and saves nothing on price. The holding cost is small, and that is the trap: small costs make forward buying feel harmless. The real cost shows up only if the forecast is wrong.

The CSI principle
Growth changes how much you order each time, not how far ahead you buy.
When prices are flat per unit, grow the order with the sales and keep the months of cover steady. Buy further ahead only where a real price break pays for the extra shelf time, and only as far as you would still use if the growth stopped.

The stall test

Every forward buy is a bet that the forecast arrives. The stall test prices the bet.

Take the three-month buy from the forecast above: 95.01 kg of wax sized for 150, 165 and 182 candles. Now suppose growth stops. The table shows how long that wax lasts under three outcomes, next to a six-month buy sized the same way.

The three-month buy is forgiving: even if sales go flat it lasts 3.3 months. The six-month buy is not. Flat sales stretch it to 7.7 months, and a 10% monthly decline stretches it to 14.0 months, with ₹36,946.43 of wax still on the shelf when the forecast said it would be gone. The further ahead you buy on a forecast, the more the forecast has to be right. That is the case for keeping forward buys short on flat-priced items, where there is no saving to set against the risk.

Three-month forecast buy of wax · outcomes are examples
What a forecast buy becomes if growth changes
Forward buy What actually happens The buy lasts Wax value left when the forecast said it would be used up
3 months (95.01 kg) Growth continues at 10% 3.0 months ₹0.00
3 months (95.01 kg) Sales go flat at 150 3.3 months ₹3,779.97
3 months (95.01 kg) Sales fall 10% a month 3.8 months ₹7,316.08
6 months (221.47 kg) Growth continues at 10% 6.0 months ₹0.00
6 months (221.47 kg) Sales go flat at 150 7.7 months ₹20,919.22
6 months (221.47 kg) Sales fall 10% a month 14.0 months ₹36,946.43

On wax, a stall is survivable: wax is used by every candle and, stored sealed, cool and dry as is general practice, it waits. The same test on a single fragrance is harsher. If a scent that sold 40 candles a month drops to 20, a kilo bought on the growth forecast becomes three months of stock of one oil. That is why I Have 20 Fragrances but Only Five Are Bestsellers — Should I Buy 1 Kg Fragrance Oils Only for Those Five and Keep Smaller Quantities of the Rest? treats fragrance scent by scent, and why My Bestselling Fragrance Keeps Running Out — Should I Hold More Fragrance Oil Inventory than I Hold for Slower-Selling Candle Scents? covers holding more only of the scent that keeps running out.

The mistake that looks like confidence. Buying next quarter's materials on this quarter's growth rate. Growth rates in a small business are noisy: a festive month, a single stockist or a good social post can all show up as "growth". Use the average of your last three months, not the best one, and let each month's actual sales set the next order.

Rolling orders: how to grow without overbuying

1
Forecast one month at a timeTake the average growth of your last three months and apply it to this month's actual sales. Convert to kilograms with your own grams per candle and loss rate.
2
Round to the cheapest pack5 kg bags for Natural Soy Pearl and CSI 468, 5 kg for the Chunks (the 10 kg bag is ₹0.90 dearer than two 5 kg), any bag from 1 kg for CSI 464. For oils, the size where that oil's price per gram bottoms out.
3
Keep a steady buffer, not a growing oneHold a fixed number of days of cover as a buffer, and let the kilograms in it rise as usage rises. I'm Growing Quickly but Don't Want to Run Out of Wax — How Do I Set a Reorder Point Based on Monthly Consumption and Supplier Lead Time? sets a reorder point from usage and delivery time.
4
Apply the break-even rule to the few real breaksFor items with a listed break, you may buy further ahead, up to 1 + 2s ÷ r months, if storage allows.
5
Cap every forward buy with the stall testNever hold more than you would use in, say, three months at today's sales, whatever the forecast. Set your own cap.
6
Review monthly, and quote when you cross a lineWhen a line needs many of the largest listed pack each month, ask for a quote on WhatsApp. I'm Making 1,000 Candles a Month — Which Raw Materials Should Now be Purchased Wholesale Rather than in Small Packs? shows which lines reach that first.

The three products below illustrate the three cases in the rule: a wax with a modest break, an oil with a break at the kilo, and an oil with a large break at 500 g.

1
Soy pearls · 5.6% break at 5 kg
Natural Soy Pearl Wax
The only soy wax on CSI's list with a pack break. ₹450.00 a kilo in 1 kg, ₹424.80 from 5 kg to 50 kg. The break pays for up to about 8.5 months of stock at the example rate, but it is fully captured by any bag from 5 kg. No fragrance ceiling is quoted in this series; check the product page.

Spiced · 10.0% break at 1 kg
Pumpkin Spice Fragrance Oil
₹5.90 a gram at 100 g and 500 g, ₹5.31 at 1 kg. A 10.0% break pays for up to 14.3 months at the example rate, so once this scent uses around half a kilo a month, the kilo is sound on money. A seasonal scent, though: run the stall test against the end of the season.

Honeydew Melon Fragrance Oil
One of the largest breaks in the catalogue: ₹4.35 a gram at 100 g, ₹3.40 at 500 g and 1 kg. On holding cost alone it could justify years of stock. The real limit is how fast this one scent sells, so buy the 500 g as soon as it outgrows 100 g bottles.

Signals that it is time to buy bigger

Growth does eventually change the answer, just not through the forecast. These are the signals worth acting on. A line now needs several of the largest listed pack every month: that is the point to ask for a quote, because only a quote can offer a price break the list does not. At What Monthly Candle Production Volume Should I Move from Retail-Sized Raw-Material Packs to Wholesale Purchasing? covers where that threshold tends to fall. Your ordering cost has grown with volume, such as heavier deliveries or more staff time per order: a larger order size is then worth it even on a flat price, as I'm Using 10 Kg of Soy Wax Every Month — How Much Should I Order at Once so I Save on Cost Without Holding Unnecessary Inventory? shows. A scent has run out twice in a quarter: hold more of that scent specifically. And a dated peak such as Diwali or a confirmed wedding order: buy for the peak, not for the trend.

What is not a signal: a single strong month, a supplier's larger pack that costs the same per unit, or the feeling that you should "stock up while growing". I Currently Buy Soy Wax in 1 Kg Packs but Use 20 Kg Every Month — At What Point Does Moving to 10 Kg or 25 Kg Packs Make More Sense? shows how flat CSI's wax ladder is, and A 25 Kg Wax Pack Is Cheaper per Kg than 10 Kg — How Do I Decide Whether the Savings Justify Spending More Cash Upfront? how to judge a quoted 25 kg pack against listed prices.

When sales grow, order more each time. Buy further ahead only where the price per unit falls, and never further than a flat month would still use.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A growing business is easy to sell forward stock to. Our listed prices show that most of what you buy from us costs the same per unit in any pack, so this page tells you to grow your monthly order rather than buy months ahead, and names the few listed breaks where buying bigger does save money.

Wax and oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026; wick prices are from the 25 September 2026 pull. Savings per unit, forecast quantities, holding costs and stall-test outcomes are arithmetic on those prices and the stated example inputs, shown so you can check them. The break-even rule is standard inventory arithmetic for steady use.

The 150-candle start, 10% monthly growth, 4% allowance and 1.5% a month holding rate are examples, not facts about your business or the market. Replace them with your own. Frequently asked questions

Should I buy raw materials in bulk if my candle sales are growing?
Only where the price per unit falls with the pack. For flat-priced items, grow your monthly order instead of buying ahead. For items with a break, you can buy up to 1 + 2s ÷ r months at once, capped by what you would still use if growth stopped.
How do I calculate whether a bulk discount is worth it?
Compare the saving with the cost of holding the extra stock. A saving of s% pays for buying 1 + 2s ÷ r months of steady use at once, where r is your monthly holding rate. At 1.5% a month, a 5.6% saving pays for about 8.5 months; a 10% saving for about 14. My Supplier Offers a Discount if I Buy More Fragrance Oil — How Do I Calculate Whether the Discount Is Worth the Risk of Slow-Moving Inventory? covers supplier discounts on slow-moving stock.
How do I forecast raw materials for a growing candle business?
Take the average monthly growth of your last three months, apply it to this month's actual sales, and convert to kilograms with your own grams per candle and loss rate. Forecast one month ahead and re-forecast each month.
How much excess inventory is too much for a candle business?
A useful cap is the stock you would use in about three months at today's sales, whatever the forecast says. Set your own cap from your cash and storage. For single scents, be stricter, because one scent's sales can stall on their own.
Is soy wax cheaper in bigger bags?
On CSI's listed prices, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 464 cost the same per kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg. Natural Soy Pearl is 5.6% cheaper from 5 kg, and CSI 468 2.0% cheaper from 5 kg. Neither is cheaper again at larger packs.
How should my purchasing change as my candle business grows?
Order sizes rise with sales, months of cover stay steady, and lines that need many of the largest listed pack move to quotes. I'm Growing from 100 to 1,000 Candles a Month — How Should My Raw-Material Purchasing Strategy Change at Each Stage? walks through the stages from 100 to 1,000 candles a month.
