My Candle Uses a Wooden Wick That Costs More Than Cotton — How Do I Determine Whether Customers Value It Enough to Justify the Additional Cost?
Share
How do I know if customers value it? Offer both, priced apart. List a wooden-wick and a cotton-wick version of the same candle (worked: ₹649.00 and ₹599.00), track which one buyers pick, and check complaints and returns for each. Every buyer who picks wood at the higher price earns you ₹18.14 more than a cotton buyer.
What is the decision rule? Keep the wooden wick if buyers pay at least the true premium for it (₹33.11 a candle, ₹38.95 after a worked 15% fee) or if dropping it would cost more than 8.4% of your sales. Otherwise move to cotton.
Is burn performance part of this test? No. Whether the wooden wick burns reliably in your jar, wax and scent is a separate full-life burn test; run it first, because a wick buyers love but that keeps going out is not worth any price.
The real premium per candle
Here is a worked 200 g candle with a wooden wick, built on CSI prices where we sell the item: 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and 16 g of Woody Oud (8% of total weight; the oil page states "candles (6-10%)" and the wax page "Fragrance Load Up to 10%"). The jar and label are worked examples: use your own, not CSI prices.
| Line | Quantity | Unit price | ₹ per candle | % of COGS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 184 g | ₹5,074.00 per 10 kg | ₹93.36 | 31.2% |
| Fragrance: Woody Oud | 16 g (8%) | ₹4,531.20 per kg | ₹72.50 | 24.2% |
| Wick: Performance Wooden Wick | 1 | ₹4,130.00 per 100 | ₹41.30 | 13.8% |
| Jar (yours) | 1 | ₹65.00 (worked) | ₹65.00 | 21.7% |
| Shipper: Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm | 1 | ₹1,121.00 per 50 | ₹22.42 | 7.5% |
| Label (yours) | 1 | ₹5.00 (worked) | ₹5.00 | 1.7% |
| COGS | ₹299.58 | 100.1% |
Swap the wooden wick for an Eco C2 and COGS falls to ₹267.72; the wick drops from 13.8% of COGS to 3.5%. At a worked ₹649.00 the material margin goes from ₹349.42 to ₹381.28. That ₹31.86 gap is the price the wooden wick asks your customer to pay, and it is the smallest version of it. In packs of 10 the gap is ₹49.56; in 50s, ₹37.76. Moving from 10s to 100s alone saves ₹17.70 a candle, which is why many makers who keep wood buy it in 100s once it is approved.
Costs the invoice does not show
Two more lines belong in the premium. Setting time: a wooden wick goes into a clip and tab and needs trimming to height before it is sold; at a worked 30 seconds more per candle than a pre-tabbed C2 and ₹150.00 an hour, that is ₹1.25 a candle. Time your own bench. Complaints: wooden wicks are commonly reported to be more sensitive to pool depth and trimming, and a candle that goes out is a candle that comes back. At a worked 2% extra complaints and ₹60.00 to reship, a replacement allowance adds ₹7.19 a candle (2% × COGS plus courier). Track your own rate rather than using ours.
| Line | Basis | Per candle | A year at 250 a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wick price difference | ₹41.30 − ₹9.44 | ₹31.86 | ₹95,580.00 |
| Extra setting time | 30 s × ₹150.00/h | ₹1.25 | ₹3,750.00 |
| True premium | ₹33.11 | ₹99,330.00 | |
| Complaint allowance (sensitivity) | 2% × (₹299.58 + ₹60.00) | ₹7.19 | ₹21,570.00 |
| True premium with complaints | ₹40.30 | ₹1,20,900.00 |
If your cotton comparison is Cotton Braided, not C2. In a wider jar where an Eco C2 cannot reach the edge, the honest comparison is wood against Cotton Braided, whose page says it is "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". The gap is smaller: ₹29.30 a candle in 100s, so with the same worked labour the true premium is ₹30.55. Run the uplift and test maths below with whichever cotton wick actually passes your burn test in that jar; a premium measured against a cotton wick that would never be used is not a real number.
The price uplift a wooden wick needs
Two ways to read the same number. As a price: a wooden-wick candle has to sell for at least the true premium more than the cotton version would, ₹33.11 at the worked figures. If your platform takes a percentage of the price (a worked 15% for marketplace and payment fees), the uplift has to be grossed up: ₹33.11 ÷ 0.85 = ₹38.95. As volume: if you keep one price (₹649.00) and drop wood for cotton, the margin per candle rises from ₹349.42 to ₹381.28. You would have to lose more than 8.4% of sales for the switch to cost you money. Put the other way, the wooden wick must be bringing in at least 9.1% more buyers than a cotton candle would at the same price.
How you present the gap matters as much as its size. A wooden-wick variant named only "wooden wick" asks the buyer to guess why it costs more; one described plainly ("wooden wick with a soft crackle as it burns; trim before each burn") tells them what they are paying for and how to look after it. Describe what the buyer will notice, not burn claims you have not measured: the page lists "Clean burning" and "Long burning" as benefits, but those are the page's words, not results from your jar. Keep photographs identical apart from the wick, so the buyer's choice is about the wick and not about a better photo.
That frames the test. Most makers believe the wooden wick sells the candle; few have checked. A 8.4% sales effect is not small. It is the size of effect you can see in a few weeks of side-by-side listings, so you can find out rather than guess.
How to test whether customers value it
The general method for testing what customers notice (panels, A/B photos, returns tracking) is the customer-perception test post. For a wooden wick the most useful design is a choice test, because it measures willingness to pay directly.
Design: one candle, two wick variants
List the same scent, jar and fill as two variants: wooden wick at ₹649.00, cotton wick at ₹599.00 (a worked ₹50.00 gap, a little above the ₹38.95 uplift needed). Each wooden-wick sale earns ₹349.42; each cotton sale ₹331.28. So every buyer who picks wood earns you ₹18.14 more, and the share who pick it tells you what the wick is worth to your customers.
| Share choosing wood | Monthly margin | Against all-cotton at ₹599.00 |
|---|---|---|
| 0% (all cotton) | ₹82,820.00 | — |
| 20% | ₹83,727.00 | ₹907.00 |
| 40% | ₹84,634.00 | ₹1,814.00 |
| 60% | ₹85,541.00 | ₹2,721.00 |
| 100% (all wood) | ₹87,355.00 | ₹4,535.00 |
Read the table with care. It assumes total volume stays at 250; the real question the test answers is whether offering cotton at a lower price brings in buyers you were losing, or whether wood was what sold the candle. Watch three things: share choosing wood, total sales against the weeks before, and complaints per variant.
Three more signals worth tracking
Review and message mining: count how many reviews and DMs mention the crackle or the wooden wick unprompted over the last few months. The wick page describes "Crackling fireplace ambiance" as a benefit; whether your buyers mention it is the test. Return and complaint reasons: tag every complaint by cause; "won't stay lit", "flame too small" and "tunnelling" are the wooden-wick ones to watch. Repeat buyers: if the wooden-wick candle has a higher repeat rate than your cotton candles, that is value the choice test can miss in four weeks.
Cost of the test, worked: 18 burn-test candles (three scents × two wick types × three candles) at about ₹230.86 of wax, oil and jar each, plus one 10-pack of wooden wicks (₹590.00) and one of C2 (₹94.40), come to ₹4,771.44; with ₹2,500.00 of photos for the second variant, ₹7,271.44 in all. Against a ₹99,330.00 a year premium it is cheap to find out.
Where a wooden wick usually pays, and where it does not
The premium is fixed in rupees, so it weighs very differently on different candles. On a worked ₹949.00 gift candle the true premium of ₹33.11 is 3.5% of the price; on a worked ₹449.00 everyday candle it is 7.4%. A buyer spending ₹949.00 on a gift is paying for the whole experience, and a crackling wooden wick is easy to fold into it. A buyer choosing between two ₹449.00 candles on a marketplace is comparing scents and prices, and the wick has to win on its own.
Volume and pack size change it again. A small maker buying 10s pays the full ₹49.56 gap; a larger one buying 100s pays ₹31.86. The annual bill climbs with volume even though the per-candle premium falls:
| Candles a month | Pack bought | Premium per candle | Per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 | Pack of 10 | ₹49.56 | ₹2,973.60 | ₹35,683.20 |
| 250 | Pack of 100 | ₹31.86 | ₹7,965.00 | ₹95,580.00 |
| 1,000 | Pack of 100 | ₹31.86 | ₹31,860.00 | ₹3,82,320.00 |
Three patterns come out of this, all judgement rather than data. Wood tends to pay on gift and premium SKUs where the price carries it, on candles photographed and sold on the crackle, and where your buyers already mention the wick in reviews. Wood tends not to pay on everyday candles at price points where buyers compare like for like, on high-volume lines where the annual premium becomes a large number, and on scents where the wooden wick needed extra testing or still draws complaints. Split ranges work: many makers keep wood on a premium edition and run cotton on the everyday range, which keeps the look where it is valued and the margin where it is needed.
Burn performance is a separate gate
This page is about money and customers. Whether a wooden wick burns as reliably as cotton in your formula is a different question, and it comes first: how to test wooden wicks against cotton in your formula, and how to weigh a cotton wick's hot throw against a wooden wick's look is the cotton-throw versus wooden-look trade-off. Switching from wood to cotton, or back, is a wick change: it can change the melt pool, flame and late-burn heat, so it needs a full-life bracket, not a single burn. What to retest is the wick-change retest list; whether the fragrance load can stay the same when you move between cotton and wood is the cotton-to-wooden load post.
One behaviour to know before you start: wooden wicks are commonly reported to self-extinguish as the pool deepens later in the candle's life, which a short test misses (why wooden wicks go out later in the burn). That is exactly the failure that turns a premium into complaints, so burn to the end.
CSI wicks, honestly
One wooden listing, no widths. Performance Wooden Wicks is the only wooden wick in our catalogue on 4 October 2026, sold in packs of 10, 50 and 100 with tabs included. If your burn test says the wick is too narrow or too wide for your jar, we have no other wooden width to step to; ask on WhatsApp whether one is coming, and do not stretch a wick that does not fit. The listing's "Save 25%" and "Save 30%" labels work out to 20% and 30% per wick against the 10-pack.
Cotton is flat. Eco C1 (₹5.90), Eco C2 (₹9.44) and Cotton Braided (₹12.00) cost the same per wick at every pack. Buying 1,000 C2 instead of 100 saves nothing per candle, so buy what the month needs.
If your wooden-wick candle is also a double-wick candle, or you are considering one larger wick instead of two, that is the two-wicks-to-one post. Where wick, jar and packaging savings sit together without making the candle look cheaper is the cluster guardrails post, and how a jar budget is set is the jar-budget hub.

Skip for this decision: the 100-pack of wooden wicks before both tests pass, and large cotton packs bought for a per-wick saving that is not on the ladder.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells both wooden and cotton wicks and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that our cotton wicks earn us far less per candle than the wooden wick, that we list only one wooden width, and that you should switch to cotton if your buyers do not pay for wood.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026, with stock checked per listing; the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date (C1 is buyable from 20). Product wording is quoted from the pages and attributed; CSI has no measured burn or throw data for any wick.
