My Current Citrus Fragrance Loses Its Freshness During Storage — Should I Test an Alternative CSI Citrus Fragrance Before Changing Wax?
Share
Which CSI citrus oils can I test? Citrus Lemon ₹300.00, Zesty Lemon ₹360.00, Lemongrass and Lime ₹590.00, Bergamot Amber ₹560.00 and Juicy Orange ₹749.00 per 100 g.
Do citrus oils fade faster? The Citrus Lemon page itself says citrus top notes are volatile and fade faster than warmer families. Expect some change; test how much.
When is wax the real problem? When an unscented control develops an odour, or when every citrus oil fades the same way in your wax but not in a second wax.
Why the oil comes before the wax
Your citrus candle is bright when fresh and loses that freshness after weeks on the shelf. It is tempting to blame the wax — a different wax might "hold" scent better. But your current wax already works: your wick is sized for it, your cure time is known, your surface finish is consistent, your load is proven.
Change the wax and every one of those must be re-tested. Change the oil and, provided you keep the load sensible, the wax side stays as it is. You still need to check wick behaviour and colour with the new oil, but you start from a known base.
There is also an honest reason to expect citrus to move. Lighter, more volatile materials — many citrus and fresh top notes — generally evaporate and oxidise more readily than heavier woody or musky ones. The Citrus Lemon product page says it directly: citrus top notes are volatile and fade faster than warmer families. No wax change removes that. The realistic goal is the oil that changes least in your storage, not one that never changes.
The CSI citrus shortlist
Pick the two or three oils closest to the character your customers already buy. A lemon customer may not want orange.
| Oil | Character (page) | Load guidance (page) | 100 g | 1 kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon | Lemon and lime; grapefruit and orange; mandarin | Soy 6–10%; page tip: use the upper end, cure the full 48–72 h | ₹300.00 | ₹2,832.00 |
| Zesty Lemon | Lemon top, soft floral citrus heart, clean musk base | Up to 10% soy; page: start at 8%, assess after 72 h | ₹360.00 | ₹3,400.00 |
| Lemongrass and Lime | Citrus with cedarwood and soft musk base; "moderate" per page | 6–10% | ₹590.00 | ₹5,200.00 |
| Bergamot Amber | Bergamot and citrus; amber with soft floral; woody musk and vanilla | Soy 6–10%; page: 6% bergamot leads, 10% amber forward | ₹560.00 | ₹5,437.00 |
| Juicy Orange | Orange on a light musk and amber base | Soy 8–10%, cure 48–72 h | ₹749.00 | ₹7,499.00 |
Notice the bases. Zesty Lemon has a musk base, Lemongrass and Lime a cedar and musk base, Bergamot Amber a woody, vanilla base. A heavier base can keep a candle smelling "finished" after the brightest notes have receded. Whether it keeps it smelling like citrus is what your aged test answers.
For a lemon product, a sensible first set is Citrus Lemon, Zesty Lemon and Lemongrass and Lime: ₹300.00 + ₹360.00 + ₹590.00 = ₹1,250.00. If your current oil is already Citrus Lemon, swap it out of the set for Bergamot Amber: ₹360.00 + ₹590.00 + ₹560.00 = ₹1,510.00.
The test, in your current wax
Keep the load the same for every oil, including your current one. A suggested load is 9% of total candle weight: a 200 g candle is 182 g wax plus 18 g oil, which sits inside every shortlisted page's range.
Wax for the test: four oils × four candles is sixteen scented candles. 16 × 182 g = 2,912 g, plus 200 g for the control, so 3,112 g. A 5 kg pack of CSI 464 at ₹2,537.00 covers it with room for the fresh references.
Reading the results
| Oil | Fresh score (1–5) | Aged score vs fresh reference | Hot throw aged | Wax colour vs control | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Current oil | your score | your score | your note | your note | Benchmark |
| Alternative 1 | your score | your score | your note | your note | Keep or drop |
| Alternative 2 | your score | your score | your note | your note | Keep or drop |
| Alternative 3 | your score | your score | your note | your note | Keep or drop |
| Unscented control | — | odour change? | — | baseline | Wax check |
Three patterns tell you what to do next.
One alternative clearly holds better. Move to wick confirmation in your jar with that oil, then a longer ageing run before ordering more than you can use quickly.
All oils fade by a similar amount. The oil is not the main lever. Look at storage heat first — a min/max thermometer on the shelf, lids on, cartons closed — and at how long candles wait before sale.
The control develops an odour. Now the wax is in question. Repeat a small set in a second CSI wax, such as CSI 468, with your best citrus oil before changing anything at production scale.
Check the shelf before blaming either
Citrus loss is often a storage story. A top shelf under a metal roof, a shop window or an entrance can run much warmer than the room below. Put a min/max thermometer at the actual shelf position for two weeks. If it reads far above the room, move the stock and re-test before buying a new oil or wax at all.
Buying the winner
CSI publishes no shelf life or storage temperature for its oils. Ask on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926) for the IFRA certificate, MSDS and any written storage guidance for the oil and lot you will buy. Order no more than you will use within the period your aged candles passed, and keep a retained bottle to check each delivery against. A citrus candle will always change somewhat; tell customers to enjoy it fresh, and never promise it stays exactly as poured.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general fragrance-ageing practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly that CSI's oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data, treats the 60-month shelf life on the CSI 464 and 468 pages as a wax statement only, and labels every test day, cabinet temperature, candle count, reject rate or lead time as a starting point or the reader's own figure.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. No fragrance-oil pack above 1 kg is listed, so larger quantities are shown as multiples of the 1 kg price; ask for a quote rather than assuming a discount.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%). CSI fragrance-oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data; the 60-month shelf life on the CSI 464 and 468 pages refers to the wax. Accelerated heat or cycling tests compare options and do not predict an exact shelf life. Every test day, temperature, candle count, reject rate, lead time and cost of money is a suggested starting point or the reader's own figure. No fragrance-oil pack above 1 kg is listed; larger quantities are shown at the 1 kg price and quoted on WhatsApp. Fragrance-oil prices re-checked 8 October 2026, wax prices 7 October 2026; product pages are authoritative.
