Change Control · Jars · Choosing a substitute
The alternative that needs the least redevelopment is the one closest to your approved jar in the dimensions the wick cares about. Measure every candidate on one sheet, score it with a rule you fixed in advance, and let the score set the size of the test.
6 / 38
example substitution score for the closest illustrative candidate (Jar A) — 0 = identical to the approved jar · lower is less redevelopment
Quick answers — read this first
How do I choose an alternative jar with the least redevelopment? Pick the one geometrically closest to your approved jar. Measure inside diameter at rim, middle and base, height, base and wall thickness, and weigh a fill. Score the differences; lowest score wins.

What matters most? Pool area at the fill surface and at the base (×3 each in the example rule), then glass thickness (×2), then fill height, headspace and finish (×1).

Does a matching diameter mean a match? No. Illustrative Jar B matches the diameter exactly but scores 13 because it is taller with heavier glass; tapered Jar C matches at mid-height and scores 17.

How big a test? Score 0–6: CONFIRM, six candles (₹1,589.42 in CSI materials). 7–15: REPEAT, nine with a bracket (₹2,201.22). 16+: new system. Bands are an example you set in advance.
The short answer
Sheet: Inside diameter at rim, mid-height and base · internal height · base and wall thickness · finish · brim volume · weighed fill. Derive pool areas, fill height and headspace.
Scoring: 0–3 points per line × weight; illustrative ranking A (6) < B (13) < C (17) < D (28). Fix bands and weights before measuring.
Decision: The score ranks; the burn test approves — no worse than the approved jar on every safety line. Deadline version: 1,000 candles due.

Each bar is one illustrative candidate jar's substitution score, built from weighted points for pool area at the surface and base, fill height, headspace, wall and base thickness and finish. Straight answer
My jar supplier is temporarily out of stock — how do I choose an alternative container that requires the least formulation redevelopment?
Choose the candidate your wick will notice least, by measuring before you burn. Your formula does not depend on the jar, so no candidate forces you to redevelop wax, oil or load; what differs is how much wick-and-jar testing each one needs. Measure three samples of every candidate and your approved jar the same way: inside diameter at rim, mid-height and base, internal height, base thickness, wall thickness, finish, and a weighed fill. From those, derive the pool area at the fill surface and at the base, the fill height and the headspace. Then score each difference 0–3 with bands you fix in advance, weighting the two pool areas most. In our illustration Jar A — a slightly wider straight jar — scores 6 of 38; a jar with an exact diameter match but thicker glass and a taller body scores 13; a taper that matches only at mid-height scores 17. Score 0–6 needs a six-candle CONFIRM (₹1,589.42 in CSI materials); 7–15 a nine-candle REPEAT with a bracket; 16+ is a new system.
One line: the least-redevelopment jar is the geometrically closest one — measure three diameters and the glass, score it, then burn only as much as the score demands.
Once you have picked the closest candidate, a confirmation run is six 200 g candles at 8%: about 100.8 g of oil and 1,159.2 g of wax with a 5% allowance — Lavender 1 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g (₹645.02) and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g (₹767.40) in CSI stock, or your own approved formula. A candidate that scores further away needs the nine-candle version (₹2,201.22).

Least redevelopment means least geometry change

When your jar is out of stock, the best alternative is not the prettiest or the cheapest. It is the one your wick will not notice.

Your formula — wax, oil, load, cure — does not care which jar it is in. Your wick does, because the wick was approved for a particular pool size, depth and glass. So the question "which container needs the least redevelopment?" is really "which container is geometrically closest to the one my wick was approved in?" That can be answered before you pour a single candle, with a caliper, a depth gauge and a scale. This page gives you the measurement sheet, the arithmetic that turns it into pool areas and fill heights, and an example scoring rule that ranks candidates and tells you how big a test each one needs.

Everything below uses illustrative measurements: your approved jar is a straight 7.6 cm inside, 8 cm deep, 6 mm base, 3 mm wall, clear glass, holding 200 g. Four candidates, A to D, are what a supplier might offer when yours is out of stock. None of the figures is a CSI jar's specification. Replace them with your own measurements and the method works the same.

The CSI principle
Rank candidate jars by how little they change the wick's job — before you rank them by price.
Pool area at the surface and at the base carry the most weight, because they are what the wick has to melt. Glass and depth come next. Looks come last.

The comparison sheet

Measure three jars of each candidate and use the average; note the range. Inside diameters at the rim, mid-height and base come from a caliper's inside jaws; internal height from a depth gauge; base thickness as outside height minus internal depth; wall thickness as (outside − inside) ÷ 2 at the fill line. The derived rows are geometry: brim volume as a frustum (π × h ÷ 12 × (D² + D·d + d²), which is a plain cylinder when the diameters match), fill height for 200 g at a labelled 0.88 g/ml, and pool areas as π × d² ÷ 4.

Headspace above 200 g 2.99 cm 3.12 cm 4.49 cm 2.63 cm 2.92 cm

Read across and each candidate's character jumps out. Jar A is a slightly wider straight jar — the classic "near enough". Jar B has exactly the approved inside diameter but is taller, with a heavier base and thicker walls. Jar C matches at mid-height but tapers from 8.4 cm to 6.8 cm, so its pool at the base is 20% smaller than the approved jar's. Jar D is narrower, heavier and frosted. Which is "closest" depends on what you weight, which is what the scoring rule is for.

Brim volume is not fill weight
A supplier's "200 ml" is a brim volume. At a labelled 0.88 g/ml even the full brim of a 200 ml jar holds only about 176 g of wax, and nobody fills to the brim. Always weigh a test pour to your fill line. The only CSI containers with published fills are the Golden Aluminium Tin (85 g) and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar (50 g wax capacity).

The substitution scoring rule

The rule below is an example, not a standard. It converts each measured difference into 0–3 points with fixed bands, multiplies by a weight that reflects how directly that dimension affects the wick, and adds them up. Change the bands and weights to suit your products — but set them before you measure the candidates, so the rule cannot be bent toward the jar you already like.

On this rule, Jar A scores lowest (6 of 38) and is the least redevelopment; Jar D scores highest (28). Two results are worth noticing. Jar B has a perfect diameter match and still does not win, because thicker walls, a heavier base and a deeper jar each change the late burns — see thicker glass, thicker base and taller jars. And Jar C, the taper, matches at mid-height, which is what a quick measurement across the middle would have told you, yet its base pool is far off — the narrowing-jar post explains why that matters most.

"Jar C is 7.6 cm across, same as ours." Measured across the middle, it is. A single diameter reading is how tapered and thick-walled jars slip through substitution — the number matches, the candle does not. Always measure three diameters and the glass. The sheet above takes about ten minutes per candidate and it is the cheapest part of the whole process.

From out-of-stock to approved: the sequence

The fastest route to a working substitute is to spend an afternoon measuring instead of a fortnight burning the wrong jar.
1
Freeze the approved jar's numbersMeasure your last three approved jars before they are all used. These are the reference values for every future substitution — keep them on the product record.
2
Get three samples of each candidateAsk suppliers for three of each, from a current lot. Budget, for example, ₹60.00 per sample jar including courier — an example figure to replace with your own quotes.
3
Fill in the sheet and scoreMeasure, derive, score with the rule you fixed in advance. Rank the candidates.
4
Weigh-pour the top candidatePour melted wax to your fill line in one sample and weigh it. If it does not hold your label weight at a sensible headspace, it drops down the ranking.
5
Run the test its score calls forSix or nine candles, from one melt of your approved formula, side by side with the approved jar, about 3–4 hour burn cycles (a commonly used cycle; label it), cure as usual (for example 7 days, a labelled checkpoint).
6
Approve, record and keep the runner-upRecord the winner's measurements as a jar spec. Keep the second-ranked candidate's sheet — if the first fails its test, you already know where to go next.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We list jars, and a stock-out elsewhere is an obvious moment to say "switch to ours". We will not, because we publish no internal diameters, wall or base thickness or fill weights for the White Matte, Salsa or Yankee jars, so we cannot tell you they score well against yours. Measure a sample of any CSI jar with the same sheet, and choose it only if it ranks first.

Decision rule

Scoring ranks candidates; it does not approve them. Approval still comes from the burn test: no worse than the approved jar on every safety line, within your jar supplier's guidance and the fire-safety standard you work to (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US one). CSI publishes no numeric flame or jar-temperature limit.

An approved alternative is most valuable before you need it. The backup-supplier post argues for pre-qualifying jars this way in quiet months, the approved-supplier list post shows how to write the result down so purchasing cannot swap jars on its own, and the substitution-or-wait post weighs a substitute against partial production or waiting when an order is already promised.

Stock-outs bite hardest before Diwali (8 November 2026) and through the November–February wedding season. If your jar is out of stock now, send us your approved formula and the candidate measurements on WhatsApp and we will help you size the test from listed stock. Larger wax and oil quantities are quoted on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published.
Send us your candidate sheet

This page is about choosing among candidates. If you already have one substitute in hand and a fixed number of candles due, the question becomes whether that one jar is practical in the time you have, and what it does to your material quantities — the 1,000-candle post works that case, including sampling the jar lot and pricing the extra wax. For the geometry behind every score line, start at the diameter hub.

CSI containers you can measure as candidates: White Matte Glass Jar (₹354.00 for 5), 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar (₹200.60 for 5), Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml (₹47.20 each), Mini Glass Jars. Dimensions and fills not published — put a sample through the sheet. See all glass jars.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA lists jars and still does not recommend them as substitutes by default. Our White Matte, Salsa and Yankee jars have no published dimensions or fills, so this page tells you to measure them on the same sheet as any other candidate and to choose one only if it scores closest.

Wax and oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026; wick, jar and tool prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, rechecked 25 September 2026. The candidate measurements are illustrations; brim volumes, capacities, fill heights, pool areas and headspace are plain geometry, and the scores are arithmetic on an example rule.

The scoring bands, weights and score-to-test bands are examples for you to set before measuring. The 200 g fill, 8% load, 0.88 g/ml wax factor, 5% allowance, candle counts, 3–4 hour cycles, 7-day cure and ₹60.00 sample-jar figure are labelled assumptions. CSI publishes no jar dimensions, wick charts or safety limits. WhatsApp +91 7397976926 for help, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a replacement candle jar that works with my current wick?
Measure the replacement the way your wick 'sees' it: inside diameter at the fill surface and at the base, glass and base thickness, height and fill weight. The closer those are to your approved jar, the smaller the test you need.
What measurements should I compare between two candle jars?
Inside diameter at rim, mid-height and base; internal height; base thickness; wall thickness; finish; brim volume; and the weight of wax at your fill line.
Is a jar with the same diameter a safe substitute?
Not automatically. Thicker glass, a heavier base, a taller body or a taper can all change the burn with the same headline diameter. Score the whole sheet, then confirm with a side-by-side.
Do I need to reformulate my candle for a new jar?
No — wax, oil, load and cure stay the same. The wick-and-jar lines are what need confirming or repeating. The only-the-jar post lists them.
How much wax does a 200 ml candle jar hold?
At a labelled 0.88 g/ml, about 176 g if filled to the brim — less at a normal fill line. Weigh a test pour; 'ml' is brim volume, not fill weight.
What are the dimensions of CSI's glass jars?
CSI does not publish internal dimensions, glass thickness or fill weights for the White Matte, Salsa, Yankee or Mini jars. Published fills: Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g, Heart Cutout Velvet Jar 50 g wax capacity.
