My Main Soy Wax Is Temporarily Out of Stock — Should I Buy an Unfamiliar Replacement for a Large Customer Order or Test It First?
Share
How long does the compressed test take? In the example: pour on day 2, first burn at 48 hours (day 4), blind throw at 7 days (day 9), GATE 1 on Sun 11 Oct. Full-life candles finish during production and gate shipping.
What does it cost? ₹4,900.80 for two candidates and two oils — about 5% of the materials you would risk in the example. See the kit.
What if nothing passes? Deliver the candles your remaining old wax covers (152 in the example) on time and agree a date for the rest. Never ship a candle that fails a safety line.
Test first — but compress the test, and buy in two steps
The question is framed as a choice between two things: buy the unfamiliar wax now and make the order, or test it first and risk the deadline. In practice there is a third option, and it is nearly always the right one. Buy a small test quantity today, run a compressed but controlled bench in the first ten days, and only then buy the production quantity. The test does not have to delay the order much if you plan it on a calendar, and the production purchase does not have to wait for every test result — only for the ones that tell you the wax is safe and close enough to sell.
Here is the worked example. It is 1 October 2026. A customer has ordered 600 candles of 200 g for festive gifting, due by an example deadline of 31 October — a week before Diwali on Sunday 8 November. Your usual soy wax is temporarily out of stock and your supplier cannot give you a firm restock date. You still hold 30 kg of it. After keeping 1,159 g back for control candles and allowing 3% production loss, at 184 g of wax per candle (8% load on CSI's finished-weight convention) it covers 152 candles. The other 448 need a replacement — 84.9 kg of wax with a 3% production-loss allowance. Every figure in that paragraph is an example to replace with your own.
If your usual wax happens to be CSI's own Soy Wax 464 Pellets, this is not hypothetical: every size was out of stock when the listings were re-checked on 1 October 2026. That is a stock-out, not a discontinuation — and it does not make Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 a like-for-like substitute. Same number, different product and form; CSI publishes nothing that shows the two behave the same in your candle. It goes through the same test as any other replacement.
What buying blind actually puts at risk
A wax that has never been burned in your jar, with your oils and your wick, can be fine. It can also tunnel, overheat the glass lower down, sweat on the shelf or throw differently — and the common problems show up after the first burn, not during it. If it goes wrong, the loss is not the wax alone. It is every material poured with it, the labour, and the order itself.
| What is exposed | If CSI 464 is the replacement | If CSI 468 is the replacement | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Candles poured in the replacement | 448 | 448 | 152 candles stay on your old wax |
| Average material cost per candle | ₹237.88 | ₹261.73 | Average of Jasmine and Cinnamon Vanilla; excludes labour, packaging, freight, GST |
| Materials poured into the gap | ₹1,06,572.03 | ₹1,17,255.22 | Lost if the candles cannot be sold |
| Order value of those candles | ₹2,23,552.00 | ₹2,23,552.00 | At an example ₹499.00 per candle — replace |
| Whole order value | ₹2,99,400.00 | ₹2,99,400.00 | A late or failed order can cost the customer, not just the batch |
| Compressed test kit | ₹4,900.80 | ₹4,900.80 | Covers both candidates and both oils |
The test kit is 4.6% of the materials poured into the gap on CSI 464, and 2.2% of the order value of those candles. That proportion is the whole argument. You are not choosing between speed and caution; you are choosing whether to spend a small, known amount now to avoid a large, unknown one later.
The dated plan: 1 October to Diwali
The plan below runs on real dates. The delivery dates for test materials and production wax are examples — CSI does not publish delivery times, and you should replace them with what your supplier actually confirms. Cure and burn checkpoints are labelled working practices. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states a minimum cure of 48 hours, ideally one to two weeks; neither CSI 464's nor CSI 468's page is quoted here with a cure time, so the 48-hour and 7-day checkpoints are this plan's own, applied to every candle equally.
| Date | Day | Action | Decision or output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thu 1 Oct | 0 | Confirm the stock-out and ask for a restock date in writing. Weigh the old wax you hold. Order the test kit. | 152 candles covered by old wax; 448 need a replacement |
| Sat 3 Oct | 2 | Example arrival. Pour the bench: for each oil, 3 control in the old wax + 3 in each candidate = 18 candles. | Every candle weighed, labelled, same jar carton and wick pack |
| Mon 5 Oct | 4 | 48-hour checkpoint: first matched burn of one candle per variant, 3–4 hours. | Early screen: soot, flame, mushrooming, pool. A candidate failing a safety line is dropped today. |
| Mon 5 Oct → Sun 18 Oct | 4–17 | One candle per variant continues to the end of its usable wax, burned in matched sets. | The lower-third data you cannot get any other way |
| Sat 10 Oct | 9 | 7-day checkpoint: blind hot throw, cold throw on the shelf candles, photos. | Is the candidate close enough to sell as the same product? |
| Sun 11 Oct | 10 | GATE 1. Review the sheets. Choose one candidate or none. | Order production wax: 8 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg if CSI 464 |
| Wed 14 Oct | 13 | Example production-wax arrival. Pour the pilot batch; pull first, middle and last candle. | Pilot candles burned beside old-wax production candles |
| Wed 14 Oct → Tue 27 Oct | 13–26 | Production of the 448 gap candles, one wax per batch. | Batch sheet names the wax and bag on every batch |
| Wed 28 Oct | 27 | GATE 2. Full-life bench candles finished; pilot pulls have burned several cycles. | Release to ship, or hold |
| Sat 31 Oct | 30 | Example customer deadline. | Ship in the days after GATE 2 |
| Sun 8 Nov | 38 | Diwali. | Customers light the candles |
The full-life candles are the reason GATE 2 exists. The early screen on Mon 5 Oct and the throw test on Sat 10 Oct tell you whether a candidate is worth buying; they do not tell you how it behaves in the bottom third of the jar, where the flame sits closest to the glass. Because those candles start burning on day 4, they reach the end of their life while production is running — in this example by day 17, an assumption of roughly two 3–4 hour burns a day that you replace with your own measured consumption. If a full-life candle fails a safety line after GATE 1, you stop production at that point, with most of your old-wax candles already made and the damage limited to what has been poured since.
The compressed bench: what you test and what you skip
Compression means doing fewer things, not doing them carelessly. The bench keeps everything that protects safety and the customer's first impression, and defers what can safely wait until production is under way.
| Test line | Status in the compressed plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Control candle beside every candidate | Kept | Without it you are comparing against memory |
| Flame, soot, mushrooming, jar heat — first burn | Kept, day 4 | Safety lines are never shortened |
| Full-life burn to end of wax | Kept, runs in parallel | Starts day 4, finishes during production, gates shipping |
| Hot and cold throw, blind | Shortened to the 7-day checkpoint | Longer cure may improve throw; you are checking the candidate is not worse at the age you will ship |
| Summer storage, heat exposure | Deferred | October to early November shipping is not May shipping; test before next summer — simulating courier heat |
| Wick bracket | Only if needed | If the current wick fails, the candidate is too far from your old wax for this deadline |
| Load ladder | Skipped | Keep your current 8%; a candidate that needs a different load is not a drop-in for this order |
The priced test kit
Grams follow the CSI convention (oil = candle weight × load): 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax per 200 g candle. Each candidate wax serves 6 candles — 1,104 g, or 1,159.2 g with a 5% bench-loss allowance. Each oil serves 9 candles across the control and both candidates: 144 g, 151.2 g with the allowance. Wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026; oils CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026; wicks & jars verified 10 September 2026.

After GATE 1: buying the production quantity
The gap is 448 candles × 184 g = 82,432 g of wax, 84.9 kg with a 3% production-loss allowance (a working assumption). Rounded to CSI's listed bags — container wax stops at 10 kg — that is 8 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg of CSI 464 at ₹43,129.00, or 8 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg of CSI 468 at ₹54,145.00. Neither has a bulk break on the listed packs: CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo at every size from 1 kg, CSI 468 ₹637.00 a kilo in 5 kg and 10 kg bags. For larger quantities, ask on WhatsApp for a quote; no volume discount figure is published.
| Line | CSI 464 route | CSI 468 route |
|---|---|---|
| Wax for the gap | 8 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg · ₹43,129.00 | 8 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg · ₹54,145.00 |
| Wax per kilo on these bags | ₹507.40 | ₹637.00 |
| Wax per candle at that rate | ₹93.36 | ₹117.21 |
| Oil for the gap, both fragrances | 7,383.0 g split by your order mix | Same |
| Surplus wax after the order | 95.0 g | 95.0 g |
The 3% allowance leaves only a small surplus here, so weigh accurately and do not let test pours eat into production wax. Keep a retained sample of the production lot — why every bulk delivery deserves one — and record the order date and bag against every batch that used it, as in the delivery record. If the replacement turns out well, these sheets and that sample are the start of a qualified backup.
The decision rule when a candidate fails
Most guides stop at "test it". The harder part of an urgent order is knowing what to do when the test says no. These are the options in order of preference, written so that you decide before the pressure arrives.
| Result | When | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| GO | Candidate no worse than control on every safety line; throw and appearance close enough to sell as the same product | Buy production wax at GATE 1; ship at GATE 2 |
| GO, ONE OIL | Passes with one fragrance, not the other | Make the passing fragrance in the replacement; make the other from the old wax you hold |
| SPLIT DELIVERY | No candidate passes, or a full-life candle fails after GATE 1 | Deliver the 152 old-wax candles on time; agree a later date for the rest |
| WAIT | Usual wax restocks before you would start the gap | Use it; keep the bench sheets as the start of a backup qualification |
| NO-GO | Any candidate safety line worse than control | Never ship a candle that fails a safety line, whatever the deadline |
The split delivery is the option makers resist and customers usually accept. A corporate buyer who receives part of an order on time with a clear date for the rest has a supplier problem. A corporate buyer whose employees' candles soot or tunnel has a reputation problem — and so do you. What to validate before a 500 kg order covers the same stages without the deadline, and how many candles to make from a new lot sets the pulled-sample logic used at the pilot.

If you are reading this in a calm month, the better answer is upstream: approve a backup supplier before you need one and qualify the second wax SKU by SKU so a stock-out costs you a delivery, not a test. If a replacement supplier is promising you equivalence, what to verify before believing a direct-replacement claim is the checklist. Why an identical-looking wax still needs testing covers the most common shortcut, and the standard test candle is how you screen replacements quickly next time. The whole process sits in the full selection and approval system.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A stock-out elsewhere is a sales opportunity for us, which is why this page tells you to buy a test kit before a production bag. We publish no burn, throw, adhesion or lot-consistency data, and nothing about CSI 464 flakes or CSI 468 makes them a proven substitute for any other wax.
Soy-wax prices and stock are CSI live listings re-checked on 1 October 2026, when Soy Wax 464 Pellets were out of stock in every size; oil prices were pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices are those verified on 10 September 2026. Candle splits, pack rounding, exposure and dates are arithmetic you can check.

Published fragrance ceilings in this series: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 13%, Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 13%, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 10%; no others. The only true melting point published is CSI 468's 50–53°C. CSI publishes no burn results, throw data, hardness, frosting, adhesion, heat-survival data, lot numbers, CoAs or batch-consistency data.
