Indian Heat & Shipping · Reversible Softening
Softening that reverses can be perfectly acceptable — if the candle comes back indistinguishable from a twin that never travelled, keeps doing so after repeated trips, and burns the same. Firmness alone does not prove it.
₹6,819.44
materials for a 20-candle, four-arm recovery test of two CSI coconut-soy waxes · CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Is a candle that softens and firms again OK to ship? It can be — if after recovery it matches an unexposed twin on surface, wick, glass, oil and burn, and still does after repeated exposures.

What does not reverse? Fingerprints and lid marks, wick lean, surface oil, glass gaps and surface tilt. See the table.

How do I test recovery? Four arms per wax: unexposed twin, single exposure, 3 cycles, and handled while soft — then burn against the twin. See the design.

What does it cost? ₹6,819.44 in CSI materials for 20 candles. See the kit.
The short answer
Answer: Suitable only if it recovers completely — matching an unexposed twin on surface, wick, glass contact, oil and burn — after one exposure and after repeated ones.
Why: Firmness returns as wax cools, but changes made while soft — wick lean, marks, oil, glass gaps — usually do not; CSI publishes no recovery data for any wax.
Method: 10 candles per wax across twin, single exposure, 3-cycle and handled-while-soft arms; score at 0 h and 24 h; burn exposed vs twin.
Softens, then firms again: did it recover, or only look recovered? Example: CSI 468 vs Premium Coconut Soy Wax · Mango Coconut 8% · every exposed candle judged against an unexposed twin 1 · EXPOSE logged route heat packed as shipped 2 · SOFT score at 0 h: dent, top, wick 3 · RECOVER 24 h indoors untouched 4 · VERIFY vs unexposed twin: look, then burn repeat for 3 cycles (example) — does it still recover after the third? FULLY RECOVERED looks like the twin burns like the twin after every cycle → ship, with a care note LOOKS RECOVERED surface back, but wick leaned or burn worse than twin → fix packing or wick NOT RECOVERED marks, oil, gap at glass, or slump that stays → not for this route
Each exposed candle goes through the same loop: exposure to logged route heat, a score while soft, 24 hours' undisturbed recovery, then verification against an unexposed twin — first by look and touch, then by burn. Repeating the loop shows whether recovery holds over a season. The three outcomes separate a candle that truly recovered from one that only looks as if it did.
Straight answer
My soy wax candle softens around the top after heat exposure but becomes firm again indoors — is the wax suitable for commercial Indian shipping?
It can be — but only if it recovers completely, repeatedly and through the burn, which firmness alone does not show. Softening in warmth is normal soy behaviour. What matters is what happened while the top was soft: a wick can lean, a lid or finger can mark the surface, oil can rise and stay, and the wax can let go of the glass as it contracts — none of which reverse on cooling. Test it with four arms per wax — the example uses CSI 468 and Premium Coconut Soy Wax with Mango Coconut at 8%: an unexposed twin, a single exposure from your logged route, 3 exposure cycles, and a handled-while-soft arm. Score dent, marks, wick lean, blot and glass contact after 24 hours against the twin, then burn exposed candles beside it. Suitable means indistinguishable from the twin after every cycle, burn included. The 20-candle kit costs ₹6,819.44.
One line: firm again is necessary, not sufficient — the candle must be indistinguishable from a twin that never travelled, after every trip and in the burn.
The recovery test on this page — Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 and Premium Coconut Soy Wax, with Mango Coconut at 8%, in an unexposed twin arm, a single-exposure arm, a 3-cycle arm and a handled-while-soft arm — is 20 candles and ₹6,819.44 in CSI materials. It answers whether "firm again indoors" really means "recovered".

It can be — if it recovers completely, repeatedly and through the burn

Firm again is not the same as unchanged. The test is whether you could tell it had ever been soft.

Soy wax softens as it warms; that is ordinary behaviour, not a defect. A candle whose top goes a little soft in a warm van and sets firm again once it is indoors may be perfectly suitable for commercial shipping in India. It may also have changed in ways that firmness does not show. While the top was soft, the wick could lean, the surface could take a fingerprint or a dent from a lid, oil could rise and stay, and the wax at the edge could let go of the glass as it contracted again. None of those reverse when the candle cools. Some of them only appear in the first burn.

So the honest answer is conditional. Reversible softening is acceptable for commercial shipping when three things hold: after recovery the candle is indistinguishable from an identical candle that was never exposed; it stays that way after repeated exposures, because a summer of parcels is many trips and a customer's shelf adds more warm days; and it burns like the unexposed candle. If any of those fails, the softening is not reversible in the way that matters to your customer, whatever your thumb tells you.

This page tests that with two coconut-soy waxes: Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468, whose product page states a melting point of 50–53°C and up to 13% fragrance load, and Premium Coconut Soy Wax, a soy and virgin coconut oil blend per its page, with no melting point, ceiling or temperatures published. A published melting point tells you where the solid wax melts; it does not tell you how far a finished candle softens below it or whether it recovers. Neither wax is claimed here to recover better. The twins decide.

The CSI principle
A softened candle has recovered only when nobody can tell it apart from its twin — by look, by touch, by smell and by burn.
Firmness returning is necessary, not sufficient. The wick, the glass contact, the surface and the first burn must come back too.

What comes back, and what may not

The table sorts the changes that can follow softening into those that commonly reverse and those that commonly do not. The mechanisms are general candle-making knowledge, phrased as "can"; CSI publishes no softening or recovery data for any wax.

After a warm exposure and 24 h indoors · general practice, not CSI measurements
Reversible and non-reversible signs
Sign Usually reverses? Why How you check it Acceptable if…
Firmness of the top Often yes Wax sets again as it cools Fixed-weight dent at 0 h and 24 h Dent within your tolerance of the twin by 24 h
Surface gloss / slight haze Sometimes Surface re-crystallises on cooling Photo vs twin, same light Within your cosmetic standard
Fingerprint, lid mark, dent No Shape set while soft stays set Photo; look at an angle Absent
Wick lean or off-centre No Wick moved in soft wax and was held when it set mm from vertical and centre Within your re-centring tolerance
Oil on the surface Rarely Released oil does not readily go back in Tissue blot No wetter than the unscented twin
Gap or wet spot at the glass Rarely Contraction on cooling can break contact Look through glass and base No new area beyond standard
Surface tilt (box on side) No Soft wax flowed and set Ruler across the top Level within standard
Burn behaviour — Any of the above can change the first burn Burn vs unexposed twin No worse than the twin on every safety line

Most of the "no" rows are about what happened while the candle was soft: it was touched, tipped or carried. That is why the test has a handled-while-soft arm, and why packing that holds a candle still matters as much as the wax. The Rajasthan approval adds a box-on-its-side arm for long routes, and heat-testing in retail packaging covers lids, inserts and wraps that touch the top.

The thumb test. A maker presses the top after the parcel arrives, feels it firm and approves the wax. The wick had leaned three millimetres during the trip and set there; the first burn tunnels on one side and blackens the glass. Fix: recovery is judged on the full list above, against an unexposed twin, and always includes a burn.

The four-arm recovery test

One exposure tells you if it recovers. Three tell you if it keeps recovering.
Per wax · 200 g White Matte jar · Mango Coconut 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax) · labelled working practice
Arms, what each does and what each proves
Arm What happens Candles per wax What it proves
T · Twin (never exposed) Stays packed in the workshop throughout 1 unscented + 2 at 8% The reference for every comparison
E1 · Single exposure One logged-route exposure, then 24 h recovery 1 unscented + 2 at 8% Whether one trip leaves a trace
E3 · Repeated 3 exposures with full recovery between (example count) 2 at 8% Whether recovery holds over a season of trips
EH · Handled while soft One exposure; while still warm, lifted out, tilted 45° for 10 s and returned (example handling) 2 at 8% Whether ordinary handling during softness leaves marks or lean
Per wax 10 20 for two waxes

The exposure itself comes from your own logs: a min/max thermometer or data logger (not a CSI item) in a real parcel on your route gives the peak and the hours. Until you have that, a closed chamber or closed car at about 40–45°C for 6 hours is an example condition — label every result from it as provisional. Choosing test temperatures above your workshop explains how to build the exposure from route logs, and simulating courier heat covers how to hold it without a kitchen oven, which you should never use for candles.

1
Pour and cure togetherBoth waxes, one Mango Coconut lot, same wick and jar, same day, same cure checkpoint. CSI 468's page states a pour temperature of 58–60°C; Premium Coconut Soy's page publishes no temperatures — ask CSI on WhatsApp and record what you used.
2
BaselineWeight to 0.1 g, top photo in fixed light, a fixed-weight dent at a fixed spot (for example a 100 g weight on a flat-ended marker for 10 seconds — an improvised working method), wick lean and centre in mm, a tissue blot, and a photo through the base.
3
Expose E1, E3 and EHPacked as shipped. T stays home in identical packing.
4
Score the soft state at 0 hUnpack immediately and dent, photograph and measure the wick — this tells you how soft it got. For EH, do the example handling now, then return the candle to its box.
5
Recover 24 h, untouched, then score againEverything on the baseline list, compared with T. For E3, repeat expose–recover until three cycles are done, scoring after each.
6
Burn against TOne E1, one E3 and one EH 8% candle per wax, each beside a T twin, 3–4 hour cycles with full cool-down (a commonly used cycle — label it). Record melt pool, flame, soot and a jar reading at the same point.
Photograph the wick from two sides
Wick lean is easy to miss from above. Photograph every candle from the front and from 90° to the side against a squared background (graph paper behind the jar works), at baseline and after recovery. A lean of a couple of millimetres that you cannot see from the top shows clearly against the grid — and it is exactly the change that turns into an uneven first burn.

The recovery scoring sheet

Score every exposed candle against T after the 24-hour recovery. CSI publishes no numeric flame-height or jar-temperature limit; the burn rule is no worse than T on every safety line, within your jar supplier's guidance and the candle fire-safety standard you work to (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US standard).

One sheet per wax · after 24 h recovery (E3: after each cycle) · decide on the last column
Recovery sheet
Line T E1 E3 (cycle 1 / 2 / 3) EH Pass rule
Dent at 0 h (how soft it got) ___ ___ _ / _ / _ ___ Record
Dent at 24 h ___ ___ _ / _ / _ ___ Within tolerance of T
Marks, prints, dents none ___ _ / _ / _ ___ None
Wick lean / centre, mm ___ ___ _ / _ / _ ___ Within re-centring tolerance
Blot 0–3 (8% vs unscented) ___ ___ _ / _ / _ ___ No wetter than unscented
Glass gap / wet spot ___ ___ _ / _ / _ ___ No new area
Burn vs T: pool, flame, soot, jar ref ___ after cycle 3 ___ Safety: no worse than T
Stopping after one cycle. A candle that recovers after one trip may not after the third: small changes — a slight lean, a thin gap at the glass, a little oil — can accumulate. Fix: the E3 arm. If cycle 1 passes and cycle 3 fails, the wax is suitable for a single trip but not for customers who keep candles in warm rooms all summer — which is most of them.

The priced recovery kit

CSI's load convention: oil = 200 g × load. Each wax needs 1,872 g for 10 candles, 1,965.6 g with a 5% pour-loss allowance (a working assumption). The sixteen 8% candles need 256 g of Mango Coconut, 268.8 g with the allowance.

What non-recovery costs per saleable candle

At production packs (CSI 468 10 kg, Premium Coconut Soy 1 kg — its largest listed size — Mango Coconut 1 kg, ₹5.90 wick, ₹70.80 jar; labour, packaging, freight and GST excluded) a 200 g candle at 8% costs ₹257.33 in CSI 468 (₹117.21 of wax) and ₹309.40 in Premium Coconut Soy (₹169.28 of wax). Mango Coconut adds ₹63.42 at the 1 kg rate — it would be ₹80.00 at the 100 g rate, a real difference on this oil.

5% ₹270.88 ₹325.69 ₹54.81

A wax that softens and fully recovers costs nothing extra. One that recovers on the surface but leaves a leaning wick costs you the candle, the replacement courier and possibly the customer. At an example 5% return rate, every saleable CSI 468 candle carries ₹13.54 of lost material and every Premium Coconut Soy candle ₹16.28. The recovery test costs ₹6,819.44 once.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Premium Coconut Soy is the dearer wax here by ₹52.07 a candle, and it would be easy to present a pricier coconut blend as the premium answer to summer softening. We publish no softening or recovery data for it or for CSI 468. If both recover fully in your test, the cheaper wax is the better buy; if neither does, the fix may be packing, not wax.

Whatever the outcome, a reversible softening result belongs in your raw-material record with the route, season, load and packing it was tested under. The hub covers the bulk-order decision, whether summer performance should decide your wax when most candles are used indoors covers the strategic question, and improving heat resistance without losing the creamy look covers formulation changes that might reduce the softening in the first place.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. "It firms up again, so it's fine" is a convenient line for any wax seller. We publish no softening or recovery data for any of our waxes — including CSI 468, whose published melting point says nothing about recovery — so this page gives you the test, and tells you when packing rather than a new wax is the fix.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for soy candles to soften in hot weather?
Yes — soy wax softens as it warms. Whether that matters commercially depends on whether the candle recovers completely, which is what an exposure-and-recovery test against an unexposed twin shows.
Will a soy candle go back to normal after getting soft?
Its firmness often returns. Marks, wick lean, surface oil and gaps at the glass usually do not. Compare it with an identical candle that was never exposed.
How do I know if heat damaged my candle?
Check for dents or prints, a leaning wick, oil on a tissue blot and wet-looking spots at the glass, then burn it beside an unexposed twin. A worse burn means damage, even if the top looks fine.
Does coconut soy wax soften more than soy wax?
Nothing CSI publishes says so. CSI 468's 50–53°C melting point is a property of the solid wax, not a measure of how far a finished candle softens. Test both.
How many heat cycles should I test a candle through?
3 is the example used here — enough to see whether recovery holds. Long routes and customers' warm rooms add more; 5426 counts cycles from logger traces.
Should I tell customers how to store soy candles in summer?
A simple care note — store in a cool place away from direct sun, keep upright — is sensible. It complements a recovery test; it does not replace one.
