Across CSI's fragrance-oil pages the stated candle load runs from 6% to 13%, so the single number you used sits at the top of one oil's published band and in the middle of another's. This guide explains what really differs, and gives you a ₹651.40 test that isolates it.

Quick answers — read this first
Is one of the oils faulty? Almost never. Two oils at the same load are two different blends carrying the same weight — different materials, different volatility, different amounts of weight in the base. Identical dosing does not produce identical release, and no supplier claims it does.

What is the first thing to check? Each oil's own page. Fresh Strawberries states "6-9% of total wax weight for candles". Japanese Cherry Blossom states "6-13% for candles". Your 8% is one point below one oil's ceiling and five below the other's.

What is the second thing? The stated base line. Amber, musk, woods and vanilla in the base describe a blend still working in hour two. A base of "Tangy mandarin" describes a bright, short arc. Both are legitimate; they need different jars and different expectations.

How do I prove it? Four 120 g jars — two per oil, everything else identical, burned at day 7 and day 21 — ₹651.40. Then, if you want each oil at its own best load, six more jars for about ₹927.22.
The short answer
A percentage is a dose, not a result. Eight per cent of a blend built around heavy base materials and eight per cent of a blend built around a bright top note are the same weight of two different things.
Read both pages before you judge either oil: stated candle load, stated base notes, stated cure time, and any discolouration note. On CSI, 81 of 107 oil pages state at least one usage percentage and the stated candle figures span 6% to 13%.
Then find each oil's own best load rather than one house number. Moving Sandalwood from 8% to its stated 10% costs ₹20.11 per 200 g candle; moving Fresh Strawberries from 8% to its stated 9% costs ₹7.08. Never past the lower of the oil's and the wax's stated figures.

Straight answer
Why does one oil perform in my soy wax while another disappoints at exactly the same percentage?
Because the percentage only fixes the weight of oil in the candle, and everything that decides release is inside the blend. Start with the pages. CSI's fragrance-oil pages state candle loads anywhere from 6% to 13%, so one house figure lands in a different place on each: 8% is one point below the stated ceiling on Fresh Strawberries ("6-9%"), one point above the starting figure Coffee Vanilla Tobacco asks for ("7-9% in soy wax"; "Start at 7% and test"), and five points below the top of the window on Japanese Cherry Blossom ("6-13%"). Then structure: the stated base line is the part still evaporating in hour two, and Sandalwood, with a single-note woody profile and a stated flashpoint of 203°C, is a different proposition from a blend whose base is a citrus material. Then the wax: CSI 468 states a melting point of 50–53°C against 80–90°C on the CSI 464 page, so the same two oils can rank differently in two waxes. And the wick, which sets the pool: Eco Candle Wicks are ₹5.90 and ₹9.44 each. The practical answer is to stop looking for one house percentage and start finding each oil's own best load, inside the lower of its page's figure and your wax's. Four jars settle the comparison for ₹651.40.
One line: the same number is not the same dose — read each oil's stated band and base line, then test each oil at its own load rather than at your house figure.

Why the same percentage is not the same dose

A house load feels professional. On a shelf of twelve oils it is twelve different decisions pretending to be one.

Almost every maker settles on a number — 8%, usually — and applies it across the range. It is efficient, it simplifies the batch sheet, and it is the right place to start. But it quietly assumes that all oils are formulated to sit at the same load, and the pages themselves say otherwise. Eighty-one of CSI's 107 fragrance-oil pages state at least one usage percentage, and the candle figures among them span 6% to 13%. Your house number is therefore doing something different on every bottle in the cupboard.

Look at the Japanese Cherry Blossom row in particular. Its page does not merely give a range — it tells you what each part of the range is for, and it places 8% in the "light, airy" zone. A maker running a house 8% and expecting "balanced everyday luxury" is reading the wrong end of the page. That is not a weak oil. That is an oil doing precisely what its page said it would.

The mistake: pushing your house number up to rescue the weaker oil. If your two oils are Sandalwood and Fresh Strawberries and you raise the house load to 10% to help one of them, you have just taken Fresh Strawberries one point above its stated 6–9% band — and past a blend's stated range you invite the surplus-oil failures rather than more throw. Raise loads per oil, never across a range. The mechanism past a ceiling is in what happens if you put too much fragrance oil in a candle.

What actually differs between two oils at one weight

Under the percentage, four things vary from bottle to bottle, and only some of them are published. It is worth being precise about which is which, because a great deal of confident internet advice on this question is invented.

Two absences matter as much as the entries. No CSI page publishes a concentration or strength figure that would let you compare two oils numerically, and none publishes lab or GC-MS data — so anyone telling you oil A is "twice as concentrated" as oil B is guessing. And where a page states no load at all, which is true of 26 of the 107, your own cured burn test is the only evidence in existence. That is not a weakness in the range; it is the reason burn testing is non-negotiable, as set out in why every new wax, wick and fragrance combination needs burn testing.

The base line is the forecast
If you only take one habit from this page, take this one: before buying any oil, read its stated base notes and write down what you expect hour two to smell like. Fresh Strawberries states "Vanilla sugar, light musk, creamy sandalwood" — a fruity opening on a soft, creamy floor. Citrus Lemon states "Tangy mandarin - lively, rounded, fresh finish" — bright all the way down. Both will sell. They will not behave alike at any single percentage, and expecting them to is the error.

When it is the wax, not the oil

Two oils can swap places when you change wax. That alone should stop you from calling one of them bad.

Your comparison is happening inside a particular wax, and the waxes CSI stocks describe very different working conditions. A melt pool sits a little above its wax's melting point, and that temperature is part of what decides which materials leave the surface. The figures below are the ones the product pages state; where a page states nothing, the table says so.

The practical consequence is that a verdict on two oils is a verdict in one wax. If the losing oil matters to your range, the cheapest second experiment is not a third oil — it is the same pair in a second wax. A 500 g pack of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is ₹299 and a 500 g pack of CSI 468 is ₹325, so the whole wax variable costs a few hundred rupees to examine. The two-oil controlled test

Four jars, one pour day, ₹651.40. The design exists to remove every explanation except the oil — and, importantly, to give you a day-7 and a day-21 reading so that a slow-developing oil is not condemned early.

Choose the load both pages permitThis is the step that makes the test fair. If oil A states 6–9% and oil B states up to 10%, run both at 8% — inside both bands — rather than at either oil's own optimum. If one page's band does not overlap the other's at all, you cannot run a same-load comparison honestly; run each at its own mid-band instead and say so on the sheet. Each 120 g jar at 8% is 110.4 g of wax and 9.6 g of oil.

Finding each oil's own best load

A stated band is a permission, not a recommendation. Inside it every oil has a load that performs best in your wax, your jar and your room, and the only way to find it is three loads side by side. The three oils below are useful for that work because their pages publish genuinely different bands — which means your test design has to change with the bottle.

Its page states "6-9% of total wax weight for candles" and 8–12% for wax melts, so a three-load trial has to run at 6%, 8% and 9% — not the usual 6/8/10, because 10% is outside the band. The base-heavy control · a measured flash point
Sandalwood Fragrance Oil
The oil to hold constant while you test others, because so little of its character depends on a delicate opening. The page describes a single-note woody profile rather than a pyramid, states "Up to 10% for soy wax" and "Up to 6% for paraffin wax" with a 48–72 hour cure for soy, publishes a measured flashpoint of 203°C, and states "Vanillin content 0% - no discolouration or yellowing in wax" — which keeps clear glass and white wax available. One CSI customer, Reena Bagal, October 2025, simply: "Very good." Take the 203°C as a figure and nothing more — flash point is a handling and transport classification rather than a performance score, and other CSI pages state higher values, the Vetiver page among them at 206°C.

Japanese Cherry Blossom Fragrance Oil
Worth owning precisely because its page publishes a band wide enough to make load testing meaningful, and then explains it: "6-13% for candles - use 6-8% for a light, airy cherry blossom presence, 9-11% for balanced everyday luxury, and 12-13% for a richer, more pronounced floral". If your house figure is 8% and you wanted "everyday luxury", the page has already told you to go to 9–11%. The stated base is "Sandalwood, musk - warm, grounding base that adds lasting depth without heaviness". No flash point is published on this page, so ask CSI for the SDS figure rather than assuming one, and remember your wax's ceiling still applies: on CSI 464 you may not follow this page above 10%.

Read that table as a budgeting exercise as much as a testing one. Six 120 g jars — two each at three loads — costs about ₹927.22 on Fresh Strawberries, and it answers a question that then applies to every candle you pour in that scent for years. Whereas committing to the top of a band untested is a permanent charge: on Autumn, going from 8% to 11% adds ₹3,256.80 to every hundred candles whether or not anyone can tell the difference from a doorway. A percentage is a dose, not a performance setting. Two oils given the same dose are still two oils.
A house load is a sensible default and a poor conclusion. Keep it for the first pour of anything new, then let each scent earn its own number inside the band its page states — and inside your wax's ceiling, whichever is lower.

What to do with the oil that loses

A 500 g bottle that lost a fair comparison is not a write-off. It is a scent in the wrong format.

The reflex is to stop using it and absorb the cost. Before you do, work through four cheaper options, because "weak at 8% in a 6 cm jar in my living room" is a very specific verdict and there are several ways to change the sentence rather than the oil.

A word on that last row. Blending two oils is a legitimate craft technique and CSI pages for several scents suggest pairings, but a blend is a new fragrance with no published band, no published pyramid and no published anything. Treat each ratio as an experiment that has to earn a day-21 burn on its own, and record it as its own recipe with its own sheet. Do not carry over either parent oil's stated figures, and never blend past the lower of the two stated ceilings.

Do not re-melt and re-dose a finished batch to "fix" it. Adding more oil to candles that have already set and cured means re-melting, adding to an unknown remaining load and guessing at the total — you end up with a batch whose actual percentage nobody can state, which is worse than a quiet candle because it cannot be reproduced or ruled out. Why trust this guide

Why do two fragrance oils perform differently at the same fragrance load?
Because the load fixes the weight of oil, not what that weight is made of. Two blends differ in where their weight sits — top, heart or base — and in how volatile their materials are, so they release at different rates from the same pool. The pages show it plainly: CSI's stated candle loads span 6% to 13%, so one house figure is mid-band on one oil and at or over the ceiling on another. Read each page before judging either bottle.
Should I use the same fragrance load for every oil in my range?
Use one figure for the first pour of anything new, because it keeps comparisons fair. Do not keep it as a conclusion. Fresh Strawberries states 6–9%, Coffee Vanilla Tobacco states 7–9% and "Start at 7%", and Japanese Cherry Blossom states 6–13% with different effects at different points. Let each scent find its own load inside the lower of its page's band and your wax's stated ceiling.
How can I tell from the product page whether an oil will carry in soy wax?
Read three things. The stated base notes, because that is what is still evaporating in hour two — amber, musk, woods and vanilla read differently from a citrus base. The stated candle band, which tells you the range the blend was written for. And the stated cure time, often 48–72 hours as a minimum. None of that replaces a burn test, but it will stop you buying 500 g of something whose own page describes a short, bright arc when you wanted a long one.
Is a more expensive fragrance oil stronger?
Price is not a strength figure and no CSI page publishes one. Fresh Strawberries at ₹3,540 per kilo puts ₹56.64 of oil in a 200 g candle at 8%; Coffee Vanilla Tobacco at ₹8,599 puts in ₹137.58 — and that page asks you to start at 7%, describing strong throw at lower loads. Cost tracks materials and formulation, not room-filling ability. Your own blind day-21 comparison is the only ranking that applies to your candles.
Can changing wax make the weaker oil the better one?
It can, which is why a verdict is always a verdict in one wax. A pool sits a little above the wax's melting point, and the stated ranges differ sharply: CSI 468 states a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour of 58–60°C, while the CSI 464 page states 80–90°C for both. Ceilings differ too — up to 10% on CSI 464 against up to 13% on Chunks and CSI 468. Test the same pair in a second wax for ₹299–₹325 of 500 g packs, and re-test the wick afterwards.
What load should I test if the oil's page states nothing at all?
Start at 8%, stay inside your wax's stated ceiling, and treat your own cured burn test as the only evidence — because it is. Twenty-six of CSI's 107 fragrance-oil pages state no usage percentage, and where nothing is published nothing should be assumed. Run three loads two jars at a time, score blind at day 21, and write the winning figure onto your own spec sheet for that scent. Ask CSI on WhatsApp for guidance and for the SDS while you are at it.
