Nothing has gone wrong with the oil. You smelled it neat, at arm's length, from an open bottle — and then you smelled it diluted twelve and a half times, inside set wax, from a pool a few millimetres deep. This guide explains the gap, and gives you three cheap tests that predict the candle instead of the bottle.

Quick answers — read this first
Why is the difference so big? Because a bottle is 1,000 g of fragrance per kilogram and a candle at 8% is 80 g per kilogram. That is the whole headline: one part oil in 12.5 parts of finished candle. No candle at any legitimate load smells like its bottle, and one that did would be a candle you could not sell.

So is my candle actually weak? Possibly not. You have judged it against the wrong reference. Judge it against another cured candle, scored from a doorway by someone who did not pour it — never against the open bottle on your bench.

What should I smell instead? A cured wax chip of the same recipe, for about ₹29.07 of materials, then a full 120 g jar at day 21. The whole three-stage ladder is ₹354.20.

Which oils survive dilution best? Ones whose stated pyramid puts weight in the base — the part still evaporating in hour two. Dark Vanilla states "Base Notes Dark amber, warm musk - deep, grounding, long-lasting"; Citrus Lemon states "Base Notes Tangy mandarin". Those two pages are describing very different afternoons.
The short answer
The bottle is not a preview of the candle. It is undiluted, at room temperature, released from a wide open neck straight under your nose, for as long as you hold it there. None of those four conditions exists in a burning candle.
Dilution is the biggest single factor and it is fixed by your load: 16.7× at 6%, 12.5× at 8%, 10× at 10%, 7.69× at 13%. Raising the load narrows the gap arithmetically but never closes it, and you cannot go past your wax's stated ceiling.
Replace the bottle test with a wax test. Melt 25 g of wax, dose it at your real load, pour a thin disc, let it set, and smell that. It costs about ₹29.07 and it is the first honest prediction of your candle you can get.

Every legitimate candle load lives in the bottom quarter of this chart. The gap between the top bar and your candle is not a defect to be fixed — it is the definition of a candle, and it is why a bottle can never be used to predict one. What you can do is make the bottom bar release as much as it possibly can.
Straight answer
Why does an oil that smells enormous in the bottle become quiet once it is in my candle?
Because you compared a concentrate with a dilution. Neat oil is 1,000 g of fragrance per kilogram. A 200 g candle at the series default of 8% is 16 g of oil in 184 g of wax — 80 g per kilogram, or one part in 12.5. Push to your wax's ceiling and the arithmetic improves but does not rescue you: 10% is 10× and 13% is 7.69×. Three other things change with it. The oil is locked into set wax rather than sitting on an open surface, so until a pool forms almost nothing can leave. The releasing area is tiny and fixed — a pool in a 6 cm jar, not a whole bottle neck held under your nose. And the temperature is a wax temperature: CSI 468 states a melting point of 50–53°C, so its pool works just above that, which suits heavier base materials better than volatile top notes. The fix is not more oil. It is to stop using the bottle as your reference and start using wax: melt 25 g, dose it at your real load, pour a thin disc, let it set and smell that — about ₹29.07 of materials. Then a full 120 g jar at day 21, because the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing. The whole ladder costs ₹354.20.
One line: the bottle is 1,000 g per kilo and your candle is 80 — judge candles against candles, and put your money into release rather than concentration.

The 12.5× nobody accounts for

Two smells, one arithmetic problem. The bottle was never a fair contest.

Fragrance load is the share of the finished candle that is fragrance oil, and in this series it is calculated on the finished candle: a 200 g candle at 8% is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. Turn that into a concentration and the shock is obvious. The bottle on your bench is 100% fragrance. The candle is 8%. Divide one by the other and you get 12.5. You are not smelling a weaker version of the same thing; you are smelling something an order of magnitude less concentrated, and doing it after your nose has just been saturated by the bottle.

Read the last column before you reach for the load. Going from 8% to 13% on Dark Vanilla adds ₹76.46 of oil to every candle — ₹7,646 per hundred candles — and takes the dilution from 12.5× to 7.69×. The candle still will not smell like the bottle. It never could. What it will do is cost you a great deal more, and on CSI 464, whose page states up to 10%, you are not permitted to try.

The mistake: sniffing the bottle immediately before the candle. Perception drops sharply after a short exposure to a strong odour, so the bottle does not just set an unreachable benchmark — it actively blunts the nose you are about to judge with. If you must smell both, smell the candle first, in a different room, before the bottle is ever opened that day. Better still, hand the candle to somebody who has not been in your workshop. Five things that change between the bottle and the pool

Dilution is the biggest factor but not the only one. Four more conditions differ, and each of them works in the same direction — against the candle. Seeing them laid out side by side is usually the moment a maker stops suspecting the oil.

Two of those five rows are within your control and neither is the oil. Releasing surface is set by the wick and the glass: test both Eco Candle Wick sizes at ₹5.90 and ₹9.44 each and keep whichever opens the pool to the wall in two to three hours without soot. Distance and dose is your vessel-to-room decision: a 120 g jar is a bedroom or bathroom product, not a hall product. Why the pouring jug lies too
Many makers report the opposite gap — that the batch smelled magnificent while it was being stirred and disappointing a fortnight later. Same explanation, reversed: the jug is a wide, hot, open surface of freshly dosed wax, which is close to the best possible conditions for release. That moment tells you the oil went in; it does not tell you what a 6 cm pool at 50–60°C will do three weeks later. What to smell instead: the three-stage ladder

The bottle is a shortlisting tool, not a prediction. Here is the ladder that replaces it, in the order the costs rise. Everything below assumes Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599 per kilo and Dark Vanilla at ₹7,646 per kilo, and any oil and wax can be substituted line for line.

Stage 0 — the bottle, used honestlyUse a 15 g trial to answer one question only: do I like the direction, and does it belong in my range? Score against a candle, not a bottlePut the new jar beside a cured jar of a scent you already sell and already trust. Two candles, same room, same day, same wick, scored by someone who did not pour either. That comparison is answerable; "is this as strong as the bottle" is not. Keep the sheets — after three or four scents you have your own release ranking, which is worth more than any description.

Only then commit volumeIf stage 2 passes, buy the pack size your monthly volume justifies. If it fails, you have spent ₹354.20 in total across the three stages — roughly the price of a pen thermometer — instead of a 500 g or 1 kg bottle of something that does not suit your wax. What the page tells you before you pour

The stated base line is the closest thing to a forecast of hour two that you can read before spending anything.

Eighty-eight of CSI's 107 fragrance-oil pages publish a full top / heart / base pyramid, and for this particular problem the base line matters most. The top note is what hits you out of the bottle and it is the part least likely to survive a cooler, smaller, slower release. The base is what is still leaving the pool in hour two. An oil whose stated base is itself a bright material is telling you to expect a short, sparkling candle rather than a long one — that is a design brief, not a defect.

Three points about that table. First, the pattern in the base column is real and useful: amber, musk, woods and vanilla in the base line describe an oil built to keep working after the opening has gone, while a base of tangy mandarin describes a bright candle with a short arc. Second, the flash-point column is there to show how much is simply not published — only 18 of the 107 pages state a measured value, and a flash point is a handling and shipping classification in any case, not a strength score. Third, the discolouration column is a design constraint you should read before you fall in love with clear glass; what each page says about it is collected in which candle fragrances are least likely to discolour white wax.

Do not read a high flash point as "strong". The two are unrelated: flash point describes the lowest temperature at which an oil's vapours can form an ignitable mixture with air under test conditions, which is why it governs handling and transport. CSI's stated values run from 85°C to 206°C across just 18 pages, and 32 more pages carry only the template line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)" — a threshold for alcohol-based products, not a measurement of anything. If the cured jar really is quiet

Sometimes stage 2 confirms the complaint: the day-21 jar, judged against another cured candle, genuinely underperforms. At that point you have a real finding. Open the pool first — stepping an Eco Candle Wick from Thin (C1) to Thick (C2) costs ₹3.54 a candle — and if that is not it, compare against an oil whose page puts real weight in the base. These three are the ones to compare with.

A page that ladders its own loads

Useful here because its page does something most do not: it describes what each load is for. It states 6–10% for soy wax candles with a 48–72 hour cure, tells you to "Start at 8% for your first batch - it is the balanced midpoint", and characterises 10% as "Warm & Rich Amber comes forward - warmer, richer, more presence". That gives you a documented route from 8% to 10% instead of a guess, and a stated base of "woody musk and smooth vanilla base" under sparkling bergamot. No flash point is published on this page, so if you need that figure for handling or transport, ask CSI for the SDS on WhatsApp rather than inferring it.

The reason to include it on this page is the kind of evidence attached to it, which is the only kind that answers the bottle-versus-candle question: what happened in somebody's house. The CSI principle
A bottle tells you what an oil is. Only wax tells you what a candle will be.
Everything between the two — the 12.5× dilution, the solid wax, the small pool, the cooler surface, the room — is the candle. Judging an oil at 1,000 g per kilo and then blaming it at 80 is the most common unforced error in candle making, and the ₹29.07 chip test is the cheapest cure for it.

Why "strong in the bottle" is a bad buying rule

A range chosen by sniffing bottles is a range chosen on the one measurement that does not transfer.

This stops being a curiosity the moment you are buying for a business. If bottle impact is your selection criterion, you will systematically favour blends whose weight sits in the opening — because that is what an open bottle shows off — and systematically underrate the base-heavy blends that keep working in hour two of a burn. You will also pay for it twice: once in bottles that disappoint in wax, and again in the customer complaints that follow.

The alternative is a two-column decision. Column one is the page: stated pyramid with real weight in the base, a stated candle load you can work inside, and any discolouration note. Column two is your own wax: the chip test, then the cured jar, then a doorway score against a candle you already sell. A scent needs to clear both columns before it earns a 500 g bottle.

The comparison is not close. ₹850.14 of testing tells you which two of four scents belong in your range; ₹10,349.80 of bottles tells you which four smelled loudest on a bench. And the testing money is not wasted even when a scent fails — a documented failure is the thing that stops you repeating it next season.

Make a cured wax chip. Melt 23 g of wax, add 2 g of oil at the temperature your wax page states, stir two timed minutes, pour a thin disc and smell it after three days to a week. On Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Dark Vanilla that is ₹13.78 of wax plus ₹15.29 of oil — ₹29.07. It is the cheapest honest preview there is, and far more informative than any number of bottle sniffs.
Will raising my fragrance load close the gap with the bottle?
It narrows it arithmetically and never closes it: 8% is 12.5× diluted, 10% is 10×, 13% is 7.69×. It is also expensive — on Dark Vanilla, going 8% to 13% adds ₹76.46 of oil per 200 g candle, or ₹7,646 per hundred. And you may not be allowed: CSI 464 states up to 10% while Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state 8–13% and CSI 468 up to 13%. Never exceed the figure your wax page states.
Does a higher flash point mean a stronger fragrance oil?
No. Flash point is the lowest temperature at which an oil's vapours form an ignitable mixture with air under test conditions — a handling and transport classification, not a performance score. Only 18 of CSI's 107 oil pages state a measured value, from 85°C to 206°C, and 32 more carry only the template line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which is a threshold rather than a measurement. Where no figure is published, ask CSI for the SDS.
Which fragrance oils hold up best once they are diluted into wax?
Read the stated base line, because that is the part still evaporating in hour two. Pages that state amber, musk, woods or vanilla in the base — Dark Vanilla's "Dark amber, warm musk - deep, grounding, long-lasting", Blue Ocean's "Driftwood, musk" — describe blends built for the second half of a burn. A stated base of "Tangy mandarin", as on Citrus Lemon, describes a brighter, shorter arc. Confirm with your own cured jar.
My wax smelled amazing in the jug but the finished candle does not. Same problem?
The same mechanism, reversed. The jug is a wide, hot, freshly dosed open surface — close to ideal conditions for release — so it flatters every oil. A finished candle releases from a small pool a little above its wax's melting point; CSI 468 states 50–53°C. The jug proves the oil went in and was stirred; it predicts nothing. Judge at day 21 from a doorway, and keep one sealed reference jar per recipe for future comparisons.
