My Fragrance Oil Smells Very Strong From the Bottle but Becomes Weak in My Candle — Why?

So is my candle actually weak? Possibly not. You have judged it against the wrong reference. Judge it against another cured candle, scored from a doorway by someone who did not pour it — never against the open bottle on your bench.
What should I smell instead? A cured wax chip of the same recipe, for about ₹29.07 of materials, then a full 120 g jar at day 21. The whole three-stage ladder is ₹354.20.
Which oils survive dilution best? Ones whose stated pyramid puts weight in the base — the part still evaporating in hour two. Dark Vanilla states "Base Notes Dark amber, warm musk - deep, grounding, long-lasting"; Citrus Lemon states "Base Notes Tangy mandarin". Those two pages are describing very different afternoons.
The 12.5× nobody accounts for
Fragrance load is the share of the finished candle that is fragrance oil, and in this series it is calculated on the finished candle: a 200 g candle at 8% is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. Turn that into a concentration and the shock is obvious. The bottle on your bench is 100% fragrance. The candle is 8%. Divide one by the other and you get 12.5. You are not smelling a weaker version of the same thing; you are smelling something an order of magnitude less concentrated, and doing it after your nose has just been saturated by the bottle.

Read the last column before you reach for the load. Going from 8% to 13% on Dark Vanilla adds ₹76.46 of oil to every candle — ₹7,646 per hundred candles — and takes the dilution from 12.5× to 7.69×. The candle still will not smell like the bottle. It never could. What it will do is cost you a great deal more, and on CSI 464, whose page states up to 10%, you are not permitted to try.
Five things that change between the bottle and the pool
Dilution is the biggest factor but not the only one. Four more conditions differ, and each of them works in the same direction — against the candle. Seeing them laid out side by side is usually the moment a maker stops suspecting the oil.

Two of those five rows are within your control and neither is the oil. Releasing surface is set by the wick and the glass: test both Eco Candle Wick sizes at ₹5.90 and ₹9.44 each and keep whichever opens the pool to the wall in two to three hours without soot. Distance and dose is your vessel-to-room decision: a 120 g jar is a bedroom or bathroom product, not a hall product. What to smell instead: the three-stage ladder
The bottle is a shortlisting tool, not a prediction. Here is the ladder that replaces it, in the order the costs rise. Everything below assumes Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599 per kilo and Dark Vanilla at ₹7,646 per kilo, and any oil and wax can be substituted line for line.
What the page tells you before you pour
Eighty-eight of CSI's 107 fragrance-oil pages publish a full top / heart / base pyramid, and for this particular problem the base line matters most. The top note is what hits you out of the bottle and it is the part least likely to survive a cooler, smaller, slower release. The base is what is still leaving the pool in hour two. An oil whose stated base is itself a bright material is telling you to expect a short, sparkling candle rather than a long one — that is a design brief, not a defect.

Three points about that table. First, the pattern in the base column is real and useful: amber, musk, woods and vanilla in the base line describe an oil built to keep working after the opening has gone, while a base of tangy mandarin describes a bright candle with a short arc. Second, the flash-point column is there to show how much is simply not published — only 18 of the 107 pages state a measured value, and a flash point is a handling and shipping classification in any case, not a strength score. Third, the discolouration column is a design constraint you should read before you fall in love with clear glass; what each page says about it is collected in which candle fragrances are least likely to discolour white wax.
If the cured jar really is quiet
Sometimes stage 2 confirms the complaint: the day-21 jar, judged against another cured candle, genuinely underperforms. At that point you have a real finding. Open the pool first — stepping an Eco Candle Wick from Thin (C1) to Thick (C2) costs ₹3.54 a candle — and if that is not it, compare against an oil whose page puts real weight in the base. These three are the ones to compare with.

Why "strong in the bottle" is a bad buying rule
This stops being a curiosity the moment you are buying for a business. If bottle impact is your selection criterion, you will systematically favour blends whose weight sits in the opening — because that is what an open bottle shows off — and systematically underrate the base-heavy blends that keep working in hour two of a burn. You will also pay for it twice: once in bottles that disappoint in wax, and again in the customer complaints that follow.
The alternative is a two-column decision. Column one is the page: stated pyramid with real weight in the base, a stated candle load you can work inside, and any discolouration note. Column two is your own wax: the chip test, then the cured jar, then a doorway score against a candle you already sell. A scent needs to clear both columns before it earns a 500 g bottle.

The comparison is not close. ₹850.14 of testing tells you which two of four scents belong in your range; ₹10,349.80 of bottles tells you which four smelled loudest on a bench. And the testing money is not wasted even when a scent fails — a documented failure is the thing that stops you repeating it next season.
