Value of Consistency · Cost per Candle
Fewer rejects lower your average cost. Consistency does more: it shrinks the buffer you pour to be sure of an order, cuts late adhesion complaints and lets you sample-inspect. To deliver 300 good candles with 95% confidence you pour 310 at 2% rejects but 335 at 8%.

extra candles poured for a 300-candle order at 8% vs 2% rejects (95% confidence) · example rates
Quick answers — read this first
How do I value production consistency? Price four lines: average rejects, order buffers, late failures after delivery, and inspection time. Each is a rupee figure from your own records.

What is an order buffer worth? For 300 good candles at 95% confidence: pour 310 at 2% rejects, 323 at 5%, 335 at 8%. On a branded order the surplus may be unsaleable.

Does adhesion always matter? Only where it is visible — clear glass shows wet spots; opaque jars may hide them. Check your own jars.

How do I measure consistency? 12 candles per wax across three sessions, inspected at 24 hours, cure and after a storage cycle. See the test.
The short answer
Answer: Assign value through four costs: average rejects (÷ (1 − rate)), the extra candles poured to guarantee orders, late adhesion complaints, and inspection effort. Compare the total with the wax's price gap.
Why: Inconsistency costs most on bad days and on orders you cannot over-supply. An average reject rate hides both.
Method: Storage test across sessions in your real jar, then re-run the ledger with your measured rates. The cost-per-candle hub.
Inconsistency means pouring extra candles just to be safe Candles to pour so that 300 good ones arrive with 95% confidence · binomial, independent candles · reject rates are examples 2% rejects 300 good candles pour 310 (+10) 5% rejects 300 good candles pour 323 (+23) 8% rejects 300 good candles pour 335 (+35) 12% rejects 300 good candles pour 352 (+52) expected rejects at the average rate safety margin for an unlucky batch Bar lengths beyond the first 300 are to scale with each other. If rejects come in bad batches, real buffers are larger.
To be 95% sure of 300 good candles you must pour more than the average reject rate suggests, and the margin grows with the rate. Light segments are the expected rejects; dark segments are the extra safety margin for an unlucky batch. The binomial assumes candles fail independently — if your rejects come in bad batches, real buffers are larger.
Straight answer
One soy wax has better jar adhesion and fewer cosmetic rejects — how do I assign a financial value to improved production consistency?
Price the four costs that consistency removes, then compare them with the price gap. First, average rejects: material ÷ (1 − reject rate). Second, order buffers: to deliver an example 300 good candles with 95% confidence you must pour 310 at 2% rejects but 335 at 8% — and on a branded corporate or wedding order the surplus may be unsaleable. Third, late failures: wet spots or pull-away that a customer finds after delivery cost a replacement and a courier. Fourth, inspection: a wax you trust can be sample-inspected. With CSI 464 and Natural Soy Pearl and Cinnamon Vanilla at 8%, CSI 464 costs ₹15.20 more per candle in materials; with example rates of 2% and 8% rejects the full ledger for a 300-candle branded order favours CSI 464 by ₹2,687.78. Adhesion only counts where customers can see it — clear glass, not necessarily opaque jars. CSI publishes no adhesion or reject data; measure both waxes across sessions and a storage cycle.
One line: consistency is worth the extra candles you no longer have to pour, the complaints you no longer get, and the inspections you no longer need.
Adhesion and consistency show up over weeks and over many candles, so the test below pours 12 candles each in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and Natural Soy Pearl Wax with Cinnamon Vanilla and watches them through storage. The materials cost ₹6,613.20, and the candles that pass are saleable.

Consistency is worth four things — price each one

An average reject rate tells you what a wax costs on a normal day. Consistency tells you what it costs on a bad one.

"Fewer cosmetic rejects" has a value everyone can calculate: divide material by (1 − reject rate) and the cheaper wax's advantage shrinks. That is the average view, and the rejects post works it fully. Better jar adhesion and more consistent production are worth more than that, because they change four costs, not one:

1 · Average rejects — material ÷ (1 − reject rate).
2 · Order buffers — how many extra candles you must pour to be sure of delivering an order on time.
3 · Late failures — wet spots or pull-away that appear after delivery, costing a replacement and a courier, and a customer's confidence.
4 · Inspection effort — a wax you trust can be sample-inspected; one you do not must be inspected candle by candle.

Each is a rupee figure you can calculate from your own records, and each is labelled example here. The worked pair is Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (₹507.40 a kilo) against Natural Soy Pearl Wax (₹424.80 from 5 kg), with Cinnamon Vanilla at 8%: the CSI 464 candle costs ₹15.20 more in materials. CSI's product page for CSI 464 describes glass adhesion and low frosting — those are the wax maker's description, not CSI test data, and nothing here says either wax adheres better. The reject and complaint rates in the ledger are illustrations of what your test might show.

The CSI principle
Put a rupee figure on the bad day, not just the average day. That is what consistency is worth.
Average rejects, order buffers, late failures and inspection time each have a cost. A wax that removes them can be worth more than its price gap suggests — or less. Measure, then price.

The cost most makers miss: pouring extra to be sure

Suppose you have a confirmed example order for 300 candles. At a 5% average reject rate, the arithmetic says pour 316. But rejects do not arrive evenly. Some batches lose one candle, some lose four. If you pour exactly the average and the batch is unlucky, you are short on delivery day. To be 95% sure of 300 good candles — treating each candle as independent, which is the kindest assumption — you must pour more than the average says. The binomial arithmetic below shows how many.

EXAMPLE order of 300 good candles · 95% confidence · binomial · Soy Pearl + Cinnamon Vanilla material cost ₹227.74 per candle
Candles to pour, by reject rate
Reject rate Average says pour Pour for 95% confidence Extra over order Wax for the pour Material for the pour Material in the extras
2% 306.1 310 10 57.04 kg ₹70,599.40 ₹2,277.40
5% 315.8 323 23 59.43 kg ₹73,560.02 ₹5,238.02
8% 326.1 335 35 61.64 kg ₹76,292.90 ₹7,970.90
12% 340.9 352 52 64.77 kg ₹80,164.48 ₹11,842.48

The buffer grows faster than the reject rate. At 2% you pour 10 extra candles; at 12%, 52. Whether those extras are a cost depends on the order. For a regular SKU, the passing extras go into stock and are sold later — the cost is cash tied up and the rejects themselves. For a branded corporate or wedding order with the client's label or colour, surplus candles may be unsaleable, and every extra is a direct loss. That is where consistency is worth most.

Planning with the average and delivering with the worst batch. A maker who averages 5% rejects pours 316 for a 300-candle order, has one bad afternoon, and delivers 296. The shortfall costs a re-pour, a delay or an unhappy client. Fix: plan buffers from your worst recent batch, not your average, or use the confidence table above. If rejects cluster in bad batches — a cold room, one person's pours — the real buffer is larger than the binomial suggests.

The consistency ledger, worked for one order

Here are all four costs for the example 300-candle branded order, side by side. Every rate and rupee input other than CSI's material prices is an example: rejects of 2% (CSI 464) and 8% (Soy Pearl), late adhesion complaints on 0.5% and 2% of delivered candles, a replacement courier of ₹80.00, inspection at 0.5 minute a candle at ₹150 an hour, and sample inspection of 20% once a wax has earned trust. Replace them all with yours.

3 · Late complaints (2% / 0.5% of 300) × (replacement + ₹80.00) ₹1,846.44 ₹484.41
4 · Inspection (100% vs 20% sample) ₹418.75 ₹75.00
Order total ₹78,558.09 ₹75,870.31
Difference CSI 464 cheaper by ₹2,687.78

On the average view alone the cheaper wax wins this order by ₹105.85. Add the buffer, the late complaints and the inspection effort and the result is reversed: the dearer, more consistent wax is ₹2,687.78 cheaper for the order. That is the financial value of consistency in one line — and it is entirely driven by the example rates. If your test shows the two waxes equally consistent, the value is zero and the cheaper wax wins. Whether a dearer wax with fewer rejects improves margin turns this into a margin question at real selling prices.

Late failures belong to the wax only if the test says so
Wet spots and glass pull-away can come from the jar (clean, dry, warmed or not), the pour temperature, cooling speed and temperature swings in storage and transit. Only put a late-failure rate against a wax after a side-by-side storage test in the same jars and conditions.

Jar adhesion: when it is a reject and when it is not

Adhesion only becomes a cost when a customer can see it. In a clear glass jar, a wet spot — where the wax has pulled away from the glass — shows from the side as a pale patch. In an opaque or coated jar it may not be visible at all. So the value of better adhesion depends on your jar range: high if you sell clear glass, possibly negligible if every SKU is in an opaque jar. Check your own jars by pouring a few candles and looking from the side after a week; do not assume.

In general candle-making practice, wet spots are commonly linked to the wax shrinking as it cools and sets, to cold or unclean glass, and to temperature swings after pouring — which is why they sometimes appear only after a candle has travelled. That is a mechanism to test, not a CSI measurement. CSI's product page for CSI 464 describes it as adhering to glass; treat that as a claim your storage test checks. Should jar adhesion be a main criterion? looks at adhesion as a selection criterion in its own right.

Judging adhesion at 24 hours. A candle can look perfect the morning after pouring and show wet spots a week later, or after a hot courier ride. Fix: judge adhesion at 24 hours, at your cure checkpoint, and again after a storage cycle that resembles your real shipping and shelf conditions — logged with a thermometer, not assumed.

Measuring consistency and adhesion: the storage test

Consistency is a property of many candles over time. Test it with many candles over time.
1
Use your own production jarPour 12 candles in each wax in the jar you actually sell — clear glass if that is your range. The priced kit uses White Matte jars; swap them for your own if you sell clear glass, because adhesion must be judged where it is visible.
2
Pour in three sessions per waxFour candles per session, three sessions on different days, alternating the waxes. Consistency means session to session, not just candle to candle. Same oil lot, same Eco Thin C1 wicks, same jar preparation.
3
Follow each wax maker's instructionsCSI's CSI 464 page lists 80–90°C as its melt/pour working range; Soy Pearl has none published — ask CSI on WhatsApp and write down what you use.
4
Inspect at 24 hours and at your cure checkpointFor example 7 days — a labelled checkpoint. Photograph each candle from the side and the top. Mark adhesion, top finish and any frosting against a written standard.
5
Split each wax into shelf and stress setsHalf stay on the shelf. Half go through a storage cycle like your real conditions — for example a warm room by day and an air-conditioned room by night for a week (an example condition; replace with your measured route using a min/max thermometer).
6
Inspect again after the cycleLate adhesion failures are the ones that become customer complaints. Count them per wax and per session.
7
Compute mean and spreadFor each wax: rejects per session, worst session, late failures. The worst session is the number your order buffer should use.

Twelve candles per wax will reveal a large difference in consistency, not a subtle one. If the result is close, run the storage test again in a different month — seasonal qualification explains why the same wax can behave differently in April and January. And keep the photographs: they are the evidence when a customer later asks why a candle looks different.

With the example ledger — CSI 464 at 2% rejects and few late failures, Soy Pearl at 8% with more — the branded-order purchase is Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 in 5 kg bags at ₹2,537.00: a 300-candle order poured at 310 candles needs 57.04 kg of wax, so 12 bags. For your everyday opaque-jar SKUs, the same example might still favour Natural Soy Pearl Wax — two waxes for two kinds of order is a legitimate answer if you can manage it cleanly.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. CSI 464 is the dearer wax here and its product page talks about glass adhesion. We do not publish adhesion, frosting or reject data for it or any wax, and the ledger only favours it because of example rates we chose to show the method. If your storage test shows Soy Pearl just as consistent in your jars, buy Soy Pearl.

The ledger links to the other cost lines in this cluster. The cost-per-saleable-candle hub sets out the base formula; the ₹30-a-kilo rework comparison prices the candles you fix rather than scrap; cure time and working capital covers the stock a slow wax ties up; whether easier pouring justifies a dearer wax looks at the people side of consistency; and the true commercial cost of a soy wax gathers every line into one sheet.

Consistency is the difference between pouring the order and pouring the order plus insurance. Price the insurance.

Frequently asked questions

What causes wet spots in soy candles?
In general practice, wet spots are commonly linked to the wax shrinking and pulling away from the glass as it cools, cold or unclean jars, and temperature swings after pouring. Test jar preparation and cooling as well as the wax.
Are wet spots a reason to reject a candle?
Only if they break your cosmetic standard and are visible. In clear glass they usually are; in opaque jars they may not be. Decide per jar range and write it in your standard.
How many extra candles should I pour for an order?
Enough to be confident, not just the average. For 300 good candles at 95% confidence: 310 at 2% rejects, 323 at 5%, 335 at 8%, 352 at 12%. Use your worst recent batch rate if rejects cluster.
Is a more consistent soy wax worth paying more for?
It can be, especially for branded orders and clear jars. Price the four costs — rejects, buffers, late complaints, inspection — with your own rates and compare them with the price gap per order.
Does CSI 464 adhere better to glass than Natural Soy Pearl?
CSI's product page for CSI 464 describes glass adhesion; nothing comparable is published for Soy Pearl, and CSI publishes no comparative test data. Run a side-by-side storage test in your own jar.
How do I test candle wax consistency?
Pour 12 candles per wax across three sessions on different days, inspect at 24 hours, at your cure checkpoint and after a storage cycle, and record rejects per session. The worst session matters as much as the average.
Price the bad day
Count rejects per session, price the buffer and the late complaints, and pay for consistency only where your test shows it.

CSI's product pages state these, and they are quoted as the pages' statements, not CSI test results: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% fragrance load; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C. Natural Soy Pearl Wax has no fragrance ceiling, melt point or pour temperature published. CSI 464's page also states a 60-month shelf life and describes glass adhesion and low frosting (maker's description). CSI publishes no adhesion, frosting or reject data.
