Business Economics · Wax Before Fragrance
Wax is the one raw material every candle shares, so its monthly use is the steadiest number in your business. Each fragrance rides on its own scent's sales, which jump around. That is why wax goes into bulk first — and why the rupee savings from bulk usually come from somewhere else.
2%
month-to-month swing in total wax demand across eight scents, against 34–73% for the individual scents · illustrative sales pattern
Quick answers — read this first
Should I buy wax in bulk before fragrance oil? Yes, as a rule. Wax is used by every candle, so its monthly use is easy to forecast and a shortage stops every scent at once. Secure one to two months of wax first, then buy fragrance in bulk only for scents with steady, proven sales.

Does buying wax in bulk save money? On most listed packs, no. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo at 1, 5 and 10 kg, and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are ₹599.00 (₹599.90 at 10 kg). Only Natural Soy Pearl Wax falls, 5.6% from 5 kg. You bulk-buy wax for security, not for a lower rate.

Then where does bulk save money? In 24 oils whose 1 kg saves 5% or more per gram, such as Honeydew Melon (22.0%) and Cinnamon, Fallen Leaves and Pumpkin Spice (10.0% each). Kilo those if they sell steadily; hold the rest at 100 g.

How much wax should I hold? Enough to cover your use until the next delivery plus a buffer. For the 240-candle example here, five 10 kg bags cover about 1.1 months. I'm Using 10 Kg of Soy Wax Every Month — How Much Should I Order at Once so I Save on Cost Without Holding Unnecessary Inventory? sets the order quantity in detail.
The short answer
Why wax first: Wax pools every scent's demand: in the example, total monthly demand swings 2% while single scents swing 34–73%. A wax shortage stops all eight scents; a fragrance shortage stops one.
Price reality: CSI 464 ₹507.40/kg at every pack from 1 kg · Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹599.00/kg (₹599.90 at 10 kg) · Natural Soy Pearl ₹450.00 → ₹424.80 from 5 kg.
Fragrance in bulk: Kilo only steady sellers, first those among the 24 oils that save 5% or more at 1 kg. Slow scents stay at 100 g. See I Have 20 Fragrances but Only Five Are Bestsellers — Should I Buy 1 Kg Fragrance Oils Only for Those Five and Keep Smaller Quantities of the Rest?.
Month-to-month swing in demand — each scent against the wax that serves them all Vanilla Bean 34% swing Cinnamon 41% swing Roasted Coffee 35% swing Fallen Leaves 51% swing Blue Ocean 53% swing Honeydew Melon 67% swing Gardenia 73% swing Pumpkin Spice 69% swing All scents together = wax 2% swing Illustrative three-month sales pattern. Swing = (highest month − lowest month) ÷ average month. Wax pools every scent's demand, so it swings least.
The eight scents use an illustrative three-month sales pattern, the kind a small range typically sees, not CSI sales data. The shape matters more than the exact numbers: when individual scents rise and fall against each other, the total they share — wax, wicks, jars — moves far less than any one of them.
Straight answer
Should I buy wax in bulk before fragrance oil because wax is used across every candle while individual fragrances sell at different rates?
Yes — secure wax first, and your reasoning is exactly right. Wax pools the demand of every scent, so its monthly use is the steadiest number in your business. In the eight-scent example on this page, single scents swing 34% to 73% from month to month, while total wax demand swings only 2%. A wax shortage stops all eight scents; a fragrance shortage stops one. But be clear about what bulk wax buys. On CSI's listed packs it is stock security, not a lower price: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo at 1, 5 and 10 kg, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹599.00 (₹599.90 at 10 kg), and only Natural Soy Pearl Wax falls (5.6% from 5 kg). The per-unit savings sit in fragrance: 24 oils save 5% or more at 1 kg, such as Honeydew Melon (22.0%) and Cinnamon (10.0%). So the order is: wax to cover your use until the next delivery plus a buffer, then kilos of your two or three steady sellers — favouring any on the break list — and 100 g bottles for everything else.
One line: wax first for security; fragrance in bulk only where the demand and the price break are both real.
For the 240-candle example on this page, five 10 kg bags of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 cost ₹25,370.00 and cover about 1.1 months of production at 184 g of wax a candle. The price per kilo is the same ₹507.40 in the 1 kg pack, so buy the bag size that suits your storage.

Why wax is the predictable one

Each scent is a small bet. Wax is the sum of all your bets, and sums are steadier than the bets inside them.

Take a small brand selling around 240 container candles a month across eight scents. The best seller moves 50 to 70 candles a month; the slowest, fewer than 12. What you cannot predict is which scent has a good month. A cold spell lifts the spicy scents, a gifting order lifts the florals, a festival pulls everything toward the gourmands. Each scent's line jumps. The total barely moves, because a slow month for one scent is usually a fast month for another.

Illustrative three-month sales for an eight-scent range · example pattern, not CSI data
Candles sold per scent, and the wax they share
Scent Month 1 Month 2 Month 3 Swing (high − low ÷ average)
Vanilla Bean 60 72 51 34%
Cinnamon 50 41 62 41%

Gardenia 12 17 8 73%
Pumpkin Spice 8 6 12 69%
All scents (wax demand) 240 246 241 2%

Wax use follows the bottom row. At 184 g of wax per 200 g candle, the three months need 44.16 kg, 45.26 kg and 44.34 kg — within a few kilos of each other. Fragrance use follows each scent's own row. Gardenia's oil needs run from 128 g to 272 g, and Honeydew Melon's from 160 g to 320 g. If you bought three months of every scent in advance, you would run short on some and sit on surplus in others. If you buy three months of wax, you will use it.

This effect has a name in inventory planning — demand pooling, or risk pooling — and it applies to everything every candle shares: wax, wicks, jars if you use one standard jar, even stirring sticks. It does not apply to anything scent-specific: the oil, a scent-specific dye, a printed label with the scent's name on it. That is the logical split between what you can hold deep and what you should hold shallow.

Consequence of a stock-out, not only its likelihood
Running out of one fragrance costs you the sales of one scent until the next delivery. Running out of wax costs you the sales of every scent. Even if the two were equally likely, the wax shortage would be eight times as expensive in this example. That asymmetry, not a price break, is why wax goes first.

What bulk does to each price

The pooling argument says wax is the safe material to hold deep. The price list says something different about where holding deep saves money. On CSI's listed packs:

Wax: CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
The container waxes, pack by pack
Wax 500 g 1 kg 5 kg 10 kg Per-kg change 1 kg → largest
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 ₹260.00 (₹520.00/kg) ₹507.40 ₹2,537.00 (₹507.40/kg) ₹5,074.00 (₹507.40/kg) 0.0%
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹299.00 (₹598.00/kg) ₹599.00 ₹2,995.00 (₹599.00/kg) ₹5,999.00 (₹599.90/kg) +0.2% (dearer)
Natural Soy Pearl Wax not listed ₹450.00 ₹2,124.00 (₹424.80/kg) ₹4,248.00 (₹424.80/kg) −5.6% (50 kg also ₹424.80/kg)
Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 ₹325.00 (₹650.00/kg) ₹650.00 ₹3,185.00 (₹637.00/kg) ₹6,370.00 (₹637.00/kg) −2.0%

So bulk wax, for the two waxes most container makers use, is a zero-saving purchase. At 184 g a candle, CSI 464 costs ₹93.36 of wax per candle whether you buy it by the kilo or the 10 kg bag. Moving to Natural Soy Pearl from 5 kg saves 5.6% on the wax line, but that is a change of wax, which means new burn tests, not a buying decision. My Premium Soy Wax Costs More per Kg but Produces Fewer Rejects — How Do I Calculate Whether It Is Actually Cheaper than My Budget Wax? covers how to judge a wax change on cost and rejects together.

Fragrance is the opposite. It is the risky material to hold deep, yet it is where most of the listed bulk savings live. Of 91 oils that list both 100 g and 1 kg, 52 are within 1% per gram, but 24 save 5% or more. Four of the eight scents in the example are on that list: Honeydew Melon at 22.0%, and Cinnamon, Fallen Leaves and Pumpkin Spice at 10.0% each. The other four are near-flat: Vanilla Bean saves 3.2% and Roasted Coffee 4.2%, while Blue Ocean and Gardenia save nothing — both are fractionally dearer per gram at 1 kg than at 100 g.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would be happy to sell you a 10 kg bag of wax on the promise of a cheaper candle. For CSI 464 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, there is no cheaper candle: the per-kilo price is the same from 1 kg to 10 kg, and the Chunks 10 kg bag is ₹0.90 a kilo dearer than ten 1 kg packs. Buy the bag because it keeps every scent in production. If a supplier quotes a real per-kilo break on a larger volume, weigh it using I'm Getting Better Wholesale Prices on 100 Kg of Wax — How Many Months of Consumption Should I Have Before Ordering That Much?, which works out how many months of use a big wax order should represent.

Where the first bulk rupees should go

Every rupee in a bulk order buys a number of months of cover. Wax buys short, certain cover. A kilo of a slow scent buys long, uncertain cover.

The table below turns each scent's average sales in the example into monthly oil use, then asks what one 1 kg pack of it would mean: how many months it would last, and how much it would save each month against buying the same oil in 100 g bottles.

Average of the three illustrative months · 16 g of oil per 200 g candle · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
What a kilo of each scent actually buys you
Scent Candles a month Oil a month Months one 1 kg lasts 1 kg price Monthly saving vs 100 g 1 kg saving per gram
Vanilla Bean 61.0 976 g 1.0 months ₹7,646.00 ₹247.90 3.2%
Cinnamon 51.0 816 g 1.2 months ₹5,310.00 ₹481.44 10.0%
Roasted Coffee 40.0 640 g 1.6 months ₹3,738.00 ₹103.68 4.2%
Fallen Leaves 29.7 475 g 2.1 months ₹4,248.00 ₹224.04 10.0%
Blue Ocean 24.7 395 g 2.5 months ₹4,956.00 -₹2.37 -0.1%
Honeydew Melon 15.0 240 g 4.2 months ₹3,398.40 ₹229.39 22.0%

Pumpkin Spice 8.7 139 g 7.2 months ₹5,310.00 ₹81.81 10.0%

Read the fourth column with the sixth. Vanilla Bean uses a kilo in about 1.0 months, so its kilo is quickly turned into candles, but it saves only ₹247.90 a month — its main benefit is fewer reorders on your best seller. Cinnamon saves ₹481.44 a month and lasts about 1.2 months. Pumpkin Spice also saves 10.0% per gram, but at eight or so candles a month one kilo lasts around 7.2 months: a price break you would wait most of a year to collect. Blue Ocean and Gardenia save nothing (their kilos are a rupee or two dearer for the same oil), so their kilos buy only cover. And Honeydew Melon hides a useful detail: its 500 g is already ₹3.40 a gram, the same rate as the kilo, so a slow seller can collect the full 22.0% break with half the cash and about two months of cover.

Two ways to spend similar bulk cash · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
Wax cover against a spread of fragrance kilos
Option What you buy Cash Months of cover Per-unit saving
A · Wax first 5 × 10 kg Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 ₹25,370.00 1.1 months, all eight scents None — flat per kilo
B · Four tail-scent kilos 1 kg each of Blue Ocean, Honeydew Melon, Gardenia, Pumpkin Spice ₹17,996.40 2.5 to 7.2 months, one scent each 0% to 22.0% per gram, collected slowly

Option A costs ₹7,373.60 more than option B, and every kilo of it will be poured within about five weeks. Option B spreads ₹17,996.40 across four scents that together sell only around 61 candles a month, and parks between 2.5 and 7.2 months of cover on each. If one of those scents is dropped from the range, its kilo is dead stock. That is the practical meaning of "wax first": the first bulk rupees go where use is certain and a shortage is most damaging.

The CSI principle
Hold deep what every candle shares. Hold shallow what one scent needs.
Wax, wicks and your standard jar pool the demand of the whole range, so their use is predictable and a shortage stops everything. Each fragrance carries only its own scent's demand. Buy the first in bulk for security, and the second in bulk only where both the demand and the price break are proven.

The wax and two oils in the example

The three products that anchor this example: the wax every candle shares, the best-selling scent, and the scent where bulk actually saves money.

1

Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (flakes)
Rated up to 10% fragrance load (the wax maker's stated formulation maximum, not a regulatory limit), and priced flat at ₹507.40 a kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg. At 184 g a candle it costs ₹93.36 of wax per 200 g candle. Buy the bag size your storage and reorder rhythm suit; the rate does not change.

2
Gourmand · the example's best seller
Vanilla Bean Fragrance Oil
The scent that sells most in the example, and the one whose kilo is used up fastest (about 1.0 months). The kilo saves only 3.2% per gram against 100 g — ₹7.65 against ₹7.90 — so the case for it is fewer reorders on the scent you can least afford to run out of, not price.

A steady second seller with a real kilo break: ₹5.31 a gram at 1 kg against ₹5.90 at 100 g. Note the 500 g is priced at the same ₹5.90 a gram as the 100 g, so the break only arrives at 1 kg. At 16 g a candle, the kilo saves ₹9.44 per candle.

The other shared materials follow the same logic as wax. Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 are ₹5.90 each in every pack from 10 to 1,000, and White Matte Glass Jars are ₹354.00 for 5. Neither gets cheaper in bulk, and both are used by every candle, so hold them to cover rather than to save. When fragrance should come first

"Wax first" is a default, not a law. Three situations reverse it.

One scent dominates your sales. If a single scent is half your volume — a signature fragrance, or a corporate order in one scent — its oil behaves like a shared material. Its demand is nearly as predictable as wax, and a shortage of it stops half your business. Secure it alongside the wax. My Bestselling Fragrance Keeps Running Out — Should I Hold More Fragrance Oil Inventory than I Hold for Slower-Selling Candle Scents? covers how much more stock a bestseller deserves than the rest of the range.

The scent has a real price break and fast use. Honeydew Melon saves 22.0% per gram at 1 kg. If it sold 60 candles a month instead of 15, its kilo would pay back in weeks and it would be a better first bulk buy than a wax with no break at all. The test is the combination: saving per gram and months to use the pack.

You already hold enough wax. Wax first means "make sure wax is covered first", not "keep buying wax". Once you hold your target cover, the next rupee should go to whichever item is most likely to run short or has the best break — often your top two scents. I'm Running Out of One Raw Material While Having Months of Another — How Do I Synchronise Wax, Fragrance, Wick and Jar Purchasing with Actual Production? covers keeping wax, fragrance, wick and jar stocks in step.

The mistake that looks like prudence. Some makers apply the pooling logic backwards: they hold ten weeks of wax but let their top scent run on 100 g bottles bought weekly. Wax is covered, but the bestseller keeps running out, and the bestseller is where most of the revenue is. Cover wax first — then immediately cover your top scents to match. See My Bestselling Fragrance Keeps Running Out — Should I Hold More Fragrance Oil Inventory than I Hold for Slower-Selling Candle Scents?.
A wax shortage stops every scent. A fragrance shortage stops one. Buy in that order.

A wax-first buying plan

Here is the sequence for the eight-scent example, which you can apply to your own range with your own numbers.

1
Measure total wax use from total candlesAverage candles a month × wax per candle. Here, 242 × 184 g = 44.59 kg. Add a 3–5% working allowance for pour loss and test burns.
2
Set wax cover from your delivery rhythmHold enough to last until your next delivery plus a buffer. Delivery times are your own experience with any supplier — CSI does not publish one — so use yours. I'm Growing Quickly but Don't Want to Run Out of Wax — How Do I Set a Reorder Point Based on Monthly Consumption and Supplier Lead Time? turns that into a reorder point.
3
Buy the wax in the bag size your storage suitsWith CSI 464 the price is ₹507.40 a kilo in any pack, so five 10 kg bags (₹25,370.00) and fifty 1 kg packs cost exactly the same. Choose on handling and storage.
4
Rank scents by monthly oil useMultiply each scent's average candles by 16 g. The top two or three are your bulk candidates; the tail is not.
5
Kilo the top scents that use a kilo within about two monthsFavour any on the list of 24 oils with a 5%+ kilo saving. For flat-priced top scents, the kilo buys fewer reorders, not a lower rate.
6
Hold the tail at 100 g, or 500 g where that pack already carries the break100 g is already the lowest rate for most oils, and a slow scent's bottles last weeks. Check the 500 g too: for some oils it carries the full kilo rate. I Have 20 Fragrances but Only Five Are Bestsellers — Should I Buy 1 Kg Fragrance Oils Only for Those Five and Keep Smaller Quantities of the Rest? covers splitting a 20-scent range this way.

In the example, that means five 10 kg bags of CSI 464 (₹25,370.00), kilos of the four scents that use one in about two months or less — Vanilla Bean, Cinnamon, Roasted Coffee and Fallen Leaves, ₹20,942.00 together — then a 500 g of Honeydew Melon (₹1,699.20) and one month of the other three in 100 g bottles: 4 of Blue Ocean, 2 of Gardenia and 2 of Pumpkin Spice (₹4,026.00). The whole opening order is ₹52,037.20, with wax making up 49% of it. Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A wax supplier has every reason to tell you wax is the smart bulk buy on price. On our own listed packs it is not: CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg, and the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 10 kg bag costs fractionally more per kilo than ten 1 kg packs. This page recommends wax first for stock security and says plainly that the per-unit savings are in some fragrance oils instead.

Wax and oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and jar prices are Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026, with Salsa jar and wooden wick packs from CSI listings pulled 24–25 September 2026. Per-kilo, per-gram, per-candle and months-of-cover figures are plain arithmetic on those prices.

The eight-scent, three-month sales pattern is an illustrative example of how a small range behaves, not CSI or customer sales data. The 200 g candle at 8% and the 3–5% allowance are working assumptions. For wax beyond the 10 kg bags, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy wax or fragrance oil in bulk first?
Wax first, as a default. It is used by every candle, so its monthly use is predictable, and a shortage stops all your scents. Then bulk-buy fragrance only for your steadiest sellers, favouring oils with a real 1 kg price break.
Is 10 kg soy wax cheaper than 1 kg?
Not on most CSI listings. CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo at 1, 5 and 10 kg. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are ₹599.00 a kilo at 1 and 5 kg and ₹599.90 at 10 kg. Natural Soy Pearl Wax drops from ₹450.00 to ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg.
How much soy wax should a small candle business keep in stock?
Enough to last until your next delivery plus a buffer, based on your average monthly candles × wax per candle. At 240 candles and 184 g of wax each that is about 44 kg a month. I'm Using 10 Kg of Soy Wax Every Month — How Much Should I Order at Once so I Save on Cost Without Holding Unnecessary Inventory? and I'm Growing Quickly but Don't Want to Run Out of Wax — How Do I Set a Reorder Point Based on Monthly Consumption and Supplier Lead Time? set the order size and reorder point.
Which fragrance oils are cheaper in 1 kg packs?
24 of 91 oils save 5% or more per gram at 1 kg against 100 g, including Citronella (62.3%), Honeydew Melon (22.0%), Mango Coconut (20.7%), Verbena (20.0%) and Cinnamon, Fallen Leaves and Pumpkin Spice (10.0%). Most others are within 1%.
Why do my fragrance quantities keep going wrong when wax is fine?
Because each scent's sales swing much more than your total sales. Wax follows the total; each oil follows one scent. Plan fragrance scent by scent from recent sales, and hold slow scents in 100 g bottles rather than kilos.
When should fragrance oil be bought in bulk before wax?
When one scent is a large share of your volume, when a fast-selling scent has a big kilo break, or when your wax cover is already in place. My Bestselling Fragrance Keeps Running Out — Should I Hold More Fragrance Oil Inventory than I Hold for Slower-Selling Candle Scents? covers bestseller stock levels.

"Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: The eight-scent, three-month sales pattern is illustrative, not measured data. Swing = (highest month − lowest month) ÷ average of the three months. Per-candle figures assume a 200 g candle at an 8% load (16 g oil + 184 g wax). Months of cover = pack size ÷ average monthly use. Catalogue statistics (52 of 91 oils within ±1%, 24 saving 5% or more at 1 kg) are from the 24 September 2026 pull. The fragrance-load ceiling of up to 10% for CSI 464 is the wax maker's stated formulation maximum, not a regulatory limit. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
