CSI Jar & Container Guides · Fill Weight
Two jars that both say 200 ml hold the same water to the brim and not much else in common. Shoulders, necks, tapers and thick glass decide how much candle each really gives you, and only a side-by-side weighing tells you.
133–154 g
candle from three "200 ml" jar shapes at a practical fill line (worked example) · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Do two 200 ml jars hold the same amount of wax? Only to the brim, and only if both 200 ml figures are brim figures. Nobody fills to the brim. At a real fill line, shape decides: in our worked example three 200 ml jars hold 163, 171 and 177 ml at 1 cm below the rim, and the shouldered one only 154 ml if you fill below its shoulder.

What makes the difference? Where the volume sits. A straight jar has the same ml in every centimetre; a tapered tumbler keeps its widest centimetre at the top, where the headspace goes; a jar with a shoulder and neck keeps up to a quarter of its ml above the point where most makers stop pouring.

What about CSI's 200 ml jars? The Matte 8 × 7 cm family and the 200ml Salsa lug-cap jars both say 200 ml. Neither states a brim or fill line, and the Salsa states no dimensions. Plan the Matte at about 150 g of candle and a shouldered lug-cap jar lower, about 135 g, until you weigh.

How do I compare them? Weigh water to equivalent fill lines (the lower of 1 cm below the rim and just below any shoulder), then pour both from one melt and weigh the cooled candles. Three jars of each.
The short answer
The rule: equal ml at the brim does not mean equal candle at the fill line. In our worked example, shape alone moves the planning candle by 15 g, before any change of wax or load.
The worked numbers: straight jar 171 ml at the 1 cm line (147 to 154 g of candle); tapered tumbler 163 ml (140 to 147 g); shouldered jar 177 ml at 1 cm but 154 ml at its shoulder (133 to 139 g).
The CSI pair: White Matte family ₹70.80 per jar; 200ml Salsa clear from ₹40.12 down to ₹29.50 per jar; coloured Salsa ₹62.00. In our worked example the Salsa clear is still the cheaper container per 10 g of candle, even holding less.
The test: a pack of 5 of each, a scale, 1 kg of wax and C1/C2 wicks: ₹1,661.00.
Three "200 ml" jars: millilitres by fill height Worked example drawn to scale: 1 cm of inside height = 68 px, 10 ml = 17.5 px. Shapes B and C are illustrative, not CSI measurements. 0 ml 50 ml 100 ml 150 ml 200 ml 0 cm 1 cm 2 cm 3 cm 4 cm 5 cm 6 cm 7 cm fill height above the inside floor brims: C 6.4 · B 6.6 · A 7.0 cm At the fill line 1 1 A, 1 cm below its rim: 171 ml 2 2 B, 1 cm below its rim: 177 ml 3 3 B, just below its shoulder: 154 ml 4 4 C, 1 cm below its rim: 163 ml A · straight 7 cm deep inside all 200 ml at the brim B · shoulder + neck body 6.4 cm, neck 5.5 cm all 200 ml at the brim C · tapered tumbler 5.6 cm base to 7 cm top all 200 ml at the brim Candle weight ≈ ml at your fill line × 0.86 to 0.9 (rule of thumb). Weigh water to your own line in your own jars.
Three jars that all hold 200 ml to the brim, plotted as millilitres against fill height. The straight jar climbs evenly; the tapered tumbler climbs faster at the top, so a 1 cm gap costs it more; the shouldered jar climbs slowly through its neck, so a 1 cm gap costs it little, but a fill line below the shoulder costs it a lot. Worked example: jar A is the series' standard 8 × 7 cm jar; B and C are illustrative shapes.
Straight answer
Two candle jars both say 200 ml but have different shapes. Will they actually hold the same amount of candle wax?
Usually not. The 200 ml describes each jar filled with water to the brim, if it is a brim figure at all. A candle stops at a fill line below the rim, and how much volume sits above that line depends on shape. A straight jar loses the same millilitres in every centimetre of headspace. A tumbler that widens towards the top loses more, because its widest part is the part you leave empty. A jar with a shoulder and a threaded neck, like many lug-cap jars, loses little in its first centimetre, but most makers stop below the shoulder so the melt pool is not confined to the neck, and that can leave a fifth or more of the 200 ml unused. A thick base, thick walls and batch-to-batch tolerance move it again. In our worked example, three 200 ml jars hold 154 to 171 ml at a practical fill line, a candle of roughly 133 to 154 g. The only fair comparison is water weighed to equivalent fill lines, then test candles poured from one melt.
One line: the same 200 ml at the brim can be a 135 g candle in one jar and a 150 g candle in another; weigh water to each jar's real fill line before you price or label either.
Compare them on five jars each. A pack of 5 White Matte jars is ₹354.00 and 5 Pcs of the 200ml Salsa clear is ₹200.60. Both in stock on 26 September 2026. Water-fill three of each, dry them, and test-pour the same three from one melt; two of each stay spare for a retest.

Five reasons two 200 ml jars hold different candles

A millilitre figure is one number for a three-dimensional object. Everything it leaves out, your candle finds.

Why no 200 ml jar takes 200 g of wax (wax is lighter than water, oil is inside the weight, you stop below the rim) is covered in the cluster hub. This page takes that as given and asks the next question: if two jars both say 200 ml, why do they give different candles? Five reasons, roughly in order of size.

1. One figure is to the brim, the other is not

Capacity is commonly quoted to the brim, but some suppliers quote to a shoulder or to a recommended fill line. A "200 ml" jar measured to the shoulder may hold 220 ml or more at the brim. CSI's Matte family calls its figure "a fill weight of 200 ml" and the Salsa page says "The 200ml capacity"; neither says which line. Your first water-fill to the brim answers it for your jars.

2. Shoulders and necks hold volume you will not fill

A lug-cap or screw-top jar narrows into a shoulder and a threaded neck. That volume counts in the brim figure. Most makers set the fill line at or just below the point where the jar reaches full width, so the melt pool is not confined to the neck and wax does not solidify under a shoulder. In our illustrative lug-cap jar, 23% of the 200 ml sits above that point.

3. Taper puts the volume where the headspace goes

A tumbler that widens towards the rim holds more per centimetre at the top than at the bottom. The headspace comes off the top, so a 1 cm gap costs a tapered tumbler more: 18% of its 200 ml in our example, against 14% for a straight jar. A jar that narrows towards the rim (without a neck) does the opposite.

4. Thick bases and walls hide inside the outside size

Jars are often compared by outside size, and outside size includes the glass. With walls of about 3.5 mm, a jar 7 cm across outside is about 6.3 cm inside, and that inside circle is only 81% of a 7 cm circle. A heavy base of 1.5 cm instead of 1 cm takes half a centimetre off every candle. CSI's Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) gives "Height 8cm, outer diameter 7cm", close to the Matte's listed 8 × 7 cm, and is described as thick-walled with a curved silhouette; it is listed as "150g fill capacity", not 200 ml. Similar outside, a different capacity statement: exactly why outside size is not a comparison.

5. Glass varies between batches

Mass-produced glass is not machined. Base thickness, wall thickness and height vary between pieces and more between production batches. Two jars from the same listing can differ by a few millilitres; two jars from different factories that both say 200 ml can differ by much more. Measure three from each batch, and re-measure when a new consignment arrives. The full list of measurements to take on a bulk order is the bulk jar measurement checklist.

Mistake: switching from one 200 ml jar to another and keeping the old fill weight and label. What happens: the new jar either overfills (wax near the rim, lid touching the wick) or looks short, and the label is wrong either way. Fix: every new jar design gets its own water-fill, test pour and spec card, even when the ml figure is the same.

Three shapes, one number: what the curves show

Plot millilitres against fill height and the three jars stop looking alike.

The diagram plots three jars that all hold exactly 200 ml at the brim. Jar A is the series' standard worked example: the Matte family's 8 × 7 cm treated as straight-sided, 7 cm deep inside. Jars B and C are illustrative shapes, not measurements of any CSI listing: B is a shouldered jar with a lug-cap-style neck, 6.6 cm deep; C is a tapered tumbler, 6.4 cm deep. Reading across at each jar's fill line gives the table below.

Same 200 ml, three shapes · worked example
Millilitres and candle grams at the fill line each jar would really use
Jar Inside depth At 1 cm below rim Practical fill line ml to that line Candle × 0.86 to 0.9 Planning weight
A · straight (Matte-type) 7.0 cm 171 ml 1 cm below rim 171 ml 147 to 154 g 150 g
B · shouldered lug-cap style 6.6 cm 177 ml just below the shoulder, 1.8 cm below rim 154 ml 133 to 139 g 135 g
C · tapered tumbler 6.4 cm 163 ml 1 cm below rim 163 ml 140 to 147 g 145 g

Three things stand out. First, at the same 1 cm gap, the shouldered jar B holds the most (177 ml), because its top centimetre is narrow neck; a maker who compares at "1 cm below the rim" would conclude B holds more. Second, at the line a maker would actually pour B to, it holds the least (154 ml), 10% less than A. Third, the tapered tumbler C gives up 37 ml to a 1 cm gap, against A's 29 ml, because its widest part is the part you leave empty. The shape changes the planning candle from 135 g to 150 g, a spread of 15 g, before any difference in wax or load. Comparing at "the same distance below the rim" is therefore not a fair test on its own; the next section defines one that is.

Why the shoulder line matters for the burn, briefly
If wax sits in the neck above a shoulder, the melt pool at the top is neck-width while the jar below is wider, which many makers find leaves wax clinging under the shoulder. That is a wick and burn question, covered with diameter in the same-capacity, different-diameter wick guide and the diameter-and-wick hub; here it only decides where the fill line goes.

CSI's two 200 ml families, side by side

Nineteen CSI listings in stock say 200 ml. They are two shapes, and only one tells you its size.

On 26 September 2026, 19 in-stock CSI listings state 200 ml: 13 in the Matte 8 × 7 cm family (matte, glossy and frosted colours) and 6 in the 200ml Salsa lug-cap family (clear plus five colours). Two more "200" listings, the Glass Jar With Bamboo Lid and the Amber Glass Jar with Bamboo Lid (both "Fill Weight 200 gm", "H: 8.5 cm x W: 7.5 cm"), are out of stock. We quote what each page states so you can see what is missing.

The Salsa planning figure is our illustration, not a measurement: the page gives no dimensions, so we cannot tell you where its shoulder sits. It may hold more than jar B, or less. What we can say from the data is that the two families share a number and not a specification, and that the Salsa gives you nothing to calculate from. It is a jar you must weigh before you set a fill weight. Ask us on WhatsApp for its dimensions; if we cannot confirm them, a 5 Pcs pack at ₹200.60 is the cheapest way to find out.

Argued against our own interest: we sell both families under the same "200 ml", and our pages do not tell you they are different shapes, where the Salsa's shoulder is, or which figure is a brim figure. Do not order 100 of either on the strength of the number. Order five of each and weigh them.

How to compare two jars fairly

A fair comparison uses the same water, the same wax and the same rule for the fill line. Not the same distance from the rim.

The test takes an afternoon and a scale. It compares what matters to your candle: millilitres below each jar's real fill line, then grams of finished candle from the same melt. The detailed water-to-candle conversion for each CSI wax is in the water-capacity conversion guide; the fill-line mechanics for lidded jars are in the 250 ml lidded-jar guide.

1
Brim-fill three of each jarTare each clean, dry jar, fill with water until it would overflow, record. If one family reads well above 200 g, its "200 ml" was a shoulder or fill-line figure; if both read about 200 g, both were brim figures. Either way you now know.
2
Find each jar's practical fill lineUse one rule for both: the lower of 1 cm below the rim (or your lid's requirement) and just below the point where the jar reaches full width. On a straight jar that is simply 1 cm down; on a lug-cap jar it is usually below the shoulder. Tape it on the outside.
3
Weigh water to the lineEmpty, tare, fill to the tape, record, on all three of each. Take the lowest reading for each family. This is the millilitres each jar really offers your candle.
4
Pour both from one meltDry the jars. Melt enough wax for three of each (estimate from step 3 × 0.9, plus about 60 g), add oil at your load, and pour both families at the same temperature, into jars at room temperature, to their tapes. Wick them C1 and C2 so they double as burn tests.
5
Top up and weigh the cooled candlesAfter a full cool, top up any sinkhole to the same tape, then weigh with each jar tared. The difference between the two families' lowest candles is the real difference in candle, in grams.
6
Write a spec card for each designJar name and batch, fill line in cm below the rim, water to the line, cooled candle weight, factor (candle ÷ water), load. Two jars with the same ml get two cards.
Mistake: comparing the two jars by filling both "to the same height" with a ruler. Why it fails: the jars have different depths and profiles, so the same height from the floor or the rim means different volumes and different burn behaviour. Fix: same rule for the fill line, then weigh.

Which jar, once you know: cost per gram of candle

A cheaper jar that holds less candle can still be the cheaper candle. Or not. Divide before you decide.

Once you have a planning weight for each jar, compare them per gram of candle, not per jar. Worked example with our planning weights (Matte 150 g; a lug-cap jar shaped like B, 135 g), Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at the 1 kg price and Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil at its 500 g price (₹2.84 per gram; page: "candles (6-10%)"; every size in stock), 8% load, one C2 wick as a costing placeholder. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.

Per candle and per gram · worked example, 8% load
The Salsa holds 10% less candle in this example; the jar costs much less
Jar Planning candle Jar cost per 10 g of candle Materials per candle Materials per gram of candle
White Matte (pack of 5 or 10) 150 g ₹4.72 ₹196.98 ₹1.31
Salsa clear (100 Pcs) 135 g ₹2.19 ₹144.01 ₹1.07
Salsa coloured (any pack) 135 g ₹4.59 ₹176.51 ₹1.31

On these numbers the Salsa clear candle is cheaper per candle and per gram of candle, because the jar is less than half the Matte's price. The coloured Salsa, at ₹62.00 a jar, loses that edge: ₹1.31 per gram of candle, the same as the Matte, for 15 g less candle. But price per gram is only one input. The Matte is opaque or frosted, so the fill line and any wet spots are hidden; the Salsa clear shows everything; the Salsa has a lid, the Matte listing mentions none. And the 15 g difference in candle is a difference in what you can declare and charge. If you sell by the jar at one price, the customer gets 10% less wax in the Salsa in this example.

Selling both jars in one range

If you offer both, give each its own fill weight, spec card and label figure, even though both are "200 ml". Across 100 candles, labelling a 135 g candle as 150 g is a 15 g promise per candle you cannot keep; filling it to 150 g would put wax in the neck. Net-quantity declarations on pre-packaged goods in India are governed by the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules; check the current requirements for your product and channel (this is not legal advice). The label process is the label net-weight guide; if one jar looks too empty at its honest weight, the options are in the too-empty-jar guide.

Argued against our own interest: the Matte family has no pack discount (the pack of 10 costs exactly two packs of 5), while the Salsa clear drops 26.5% at 50. If your comparison shows the Salsa's candle is big enough for your product, it is the cheaper route and we would rather you knew that than bought the dearer jar by default.

What to buy for the comparison

Five items: both families, the scale that settles it, and one wax so both jars see the same melt. Chosen on page wording, price and stock on 26 September 2026; CSI publishes no burn or thermal data for these jars.

200 ml · straight 8 × 7 cm family · jar A
White Matte Glass Jar (and its 8 × 7 cm sisters)
The page states "a fill weight of 200 ml" and "Height 8 cm width 7 cm", and "withstand high heat" with no figure. It is the closest thing to jar A in the diagram, but the page does not say the sides are straight, whether 7 cm is outside, or whether 200 ml is to the brim; the worked figures here (about 171 ml to a 1 cm line, about 150 g of candle) are the series' standard example, not a measurement. Same wording and price on 12 in-stock matte, glossy and frosted sisters; Pink Matte, Frosted Brown and Orange Frosted are out of stock on 26 September 2026. Limitation: no lid, no pack discount.

200 ml · lug cap · jar B type
200ml Salsa Glass Jar with 63mm Lug Cap (Golden Lid)
The page states "The 200ml capacity", a 63 mm lug cap, a "Wide Mouth Opening" and "Heat Resistant Glass… withstands the heat of hot wax without cracking or warping" (the page's claim, no figure). It gives no height, no diameter and no shoulder depth, and calls the jar "upcycled", so ask us for dimensions and measure. Lug-cap jars commonly have a threaded neck above a shoulder, which is why jar B in the diagram is drawn that way; yours may differ. For makers who want a lidded 200 ml jar at the lowest per-jar price of the two families: ₹29.50 at 50 or 100, 26.5% less than the 5 Pcs price. Limitation: expect a lower practical fill than the Matte until you weigh it.

Priced flat at ₹62.00 per jar at 5, 50 or 100. The listings carry copy errors: descriptions say "clear glass", and handles do not match colours (the Green page's address says red-copy, Amber says blue, Light Pink says purple). Candle Making Weighing Scale
Two jars are compared by weighing water to equivalent fill lines, then weighing test candles poured from the same melt. The page describes a digital scale showing "grams or ounces" with "simple one-button operation"; it states no maximum capacity or reading step, so check that it reads single grams and handles a full jar. Argued against our own interest: any gram scale with a tare button does this comparison; buy ours only if you have none.

For a fair comparison both jars must be poured from the same melt at the same load and temperature. The page states "up to 13% fragrance load capacity"; a ceiling, not a target, and the oil page's ceiling may be lower (Citrus Lemon, the costing example here, states "candles (6-10%)", so 10% governs). It is priced at ₹0.60 per gram at 1 kg and about the same at every size (₹0.60 at 500 g, ₹0.60 at 10 kg), so there is no bulk saving to chase. Limitation: no pour temperature is stated on the page; if you already use CSI 464, compare the jars in that instead.

The CSI principle
Same millilitres, same brim. Nothing else is promised.
Compare jars at the fill line you would really use, poured from one melt and weighed. Every jar design gets its own fill weight, even when the number on the listing is the same.

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells both 200 ml families compared here and does not sell finished candles. This page points out that our own listings use the same number for two different shapes, that the Salsa listing states no dimensions at all, and that the cheaper jar may well be the better buy for your product. That is deliberate.

Every price and per-jar figure was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in the pick tables is in stock on that date, and out-of-stock colours and listings are named. Capacity, dimension and heat wording is quoted from the product pages; the count of 19 in-stock 200 ml listings is taken from the same data.

Jar A's geometry is the series' standard worked example; jars B and C are illustrative shapes, not measurements of CSI jars; the 0.86 to 0.9 factor is a candle-maker rule of thumb; planning weights and the fill-line rule are editorial judgement. Do all 200 ml candle jars hold the same amount of wax?
No. They hold the same water to the brim, if 200 ml is a brim figure. At a real fill line, shape decides: in a worked example, three 200 ml jars hold 154 to 171 ml at a practical fill line, roughly a 133 to 154 g candle.
Why does my new 200 ml jar take less wax than my old one?
Common reasons: the new jar has a shoulder or neck you do not fill, a thicker base or walls, a taper that puts more volume at the top, or its 200 ml is measured to a different line. Weigh water to your fill line in both and set a new fill weight.
How do I compare the capacity of two candle jars?
Weigh water to the brim, then to each jar's practical fill line (the lower of about 1 cm below the rim and just below any shoulder), on three of each. Then pour both from one melt at the same load and weigh the cooled candles.
Should I fill a lug-cap jar up into the neck?
Most makers stop at or just below the point where the jar reaches full width, so the melt pool is not confined to the neck. That can leave a fifth or more of a jar's ml unused; weigh water to that line to get your real fill weight.
Are CSI's Matte 200 ml and Salsa 200 ml jars the same size?
Both state 200 ml, but they are different shapes. The Matte family states height 8 cm and width 7 cm; the Salsa states no dimensions and has a 63 mm lug cap. Neither says brim or fill line. Plan the Matte at about 150 g of candle and weigh the Salsa before you set its fill weight.
Can I use the same label weight for two different 200 ml jars?
Only if both jars' weighed candles support it. Give each design its own fill weight and spec card, and check the current Legal Metrology requirements for net-quantity declarations for your product and channel (not legal advice).
Two 200 ml jars, one scale
Five of each, a scale, 1 kg of wax and a wick bracket: ₹1,661.00.
Brim-fill three of each, find each jar's practical fill line, weigh water to it, pour both from one melt and weigh the cooled candles. By the end of the week you will know how many grams of candle each "200 ml" really gives you, and which jar is cheaper per gram.

About this guide: why two jars that both say 200 ml hold different candles (brim vs shoulder figures, shoulders and necks, taper, thick glass, batch tolerance), capacity curves for three 200 ml shapes, CSI's Matte and Salsa 200 ml families compared on page wording, a fair comparison method (water to equivalent fill lines, then test candles from one melt), and cost per gram of candle.
