What Is Cold Throw and Why Does It Matter?

Why does cold throw matter if the candle is going to be lit anyway? Because it is the only part of the fragrance that is available at the moment of purchase. At a market stall, in a retail display, at a wedding-favour tasting or in a corporate gifting sample box, the buyer never lights the candle before deciding. A candle with weak cold throw is judged as an unscented candle by a customer who will never find out otherwise.
What makes cold throw strong? Five things, in rough order of effect: the oil's own light, volatile fraction; the load (on 200 g of wax, 8% is 16 g and 10% is 20 g); the cure, which keeps changing the result for two to three weeks; whether a lid has let the jar's headspace build up; and the room temperature the jar is sitting in. Nothing else in the candle contributes.
Does strong cold throw mean strong hot throw? Not reliably. Cold throw is driven by the most volatile top and heart materials, and hot throw is carried largely by heavier base materials that barely evaporate at room temperature. That is why a citrus jar can smell superb unlit and modest when burning, while a heavy woody-vanilla jar can do the reverse. Judge the two separately, on the same cured candle.
Cold throw, defined properly
Cold throw is the scent an unlit candle puts into the air at room temperature. Hot throw is the scent a burning candle puts into a room. They share a fragrance oil and nothing else — not the temperature, not the surface area involved, not the part of the formula doing the work, and not the timescale.
When a candle is lit, a melt pool forms across the whole diameter of the jar and sits at a temperature high enough to move heavy materials into the air. In a 7 cm jar that pool is 38.48 cm² of hot liquid surface; in a 10 cm jar it is 78.54 cm², which is 2.78 times the 28.27 cm² of a 6 cm jar. Unlit, none of that exists. The wax is solid, the surface is at whatever the room is — 24°C in a Bengaluru flat in December, 34°C in a Chennai shop in May — and the only molecules leaving are the ones with enough vapour pressure to evaporate off a solid surface unaided.
Those are the light ones: citrus terpenes, green and aldehydic materials, light fruit esters, some fresh florals. Heavy base materials — amber, musk, oud, benzoin, tonka, vanillin — are physically sluggish at room temperature. They are the backbone of a long hot throw and they contribute very little to a cold sniff. This is the single most useful thing to understand about the subject, because it explains every apparent contradiction that follows.
The headspace is the product
A lidded jar is a small closed system. Fragrance evaporates from the wax surface into the air above it until that air is holding roughly as much as it will hold at that temperature, and then evaporation slows right down. Open the lid and you release that accumulated air in one go — which is exactly the sniff a customer takes. Leave it open and the concentration falls; sniff again a minute later and the same candle seems weaker. It is not weaker. You emptied the headspace.
This is why the first sniff is the honest one, why a jar that has been closed since yesterday performs better than one that has stood open all afternoon, and why judging two candles fairly requires both to have been closed for the same length of time. It also means that a lidless vessel is not an inferior candle — it is a candle that has been giving its cold throw away to the room all day.
Why it decides the sale, especially in India
Hot throw earns the repeat order. Cold throw earns the first one. In almost every channel an Indian candle brand actually sells through, the buying decision is made with the candle unlit and often with the customer holding it for less than ten seconds.

That last row is the honest counterweight, and it is why this page will not tell you to optimise everything for cold throw. A brand that chases cold sniff alone builds a range of bright, top-heavy candles that impress at a stall and disappoint in a living room — which produces exactly one order per customer. The commercially sensible position is a range where the cold sniff is good enough to get the jar picked up and the burn is good enough to bring the customer back, which usually means pairing a bright, volatile opening with a base heavy enough to work hot. Several CSI oils are built that way: Apple Cinnamon is a spiced gourmand whose page states vanilla and amber base notes containing vanillin, and Cinnamon Vanilla states up to 13% of total wax weight and 2.5% vanillin with moderate discolouration expected.
There is a second Indian factor worth planning for: temperature. A jar sitting in a 34°C shop in Chennai or a 40°C Ahmedabad summer is evaporating faster than the same jar in an air-conditioned Delhi boutique in January, so the same candle genuinely presents differently. That is not a fault to fix in the recipe. It is a reason to sample your own product in the conditions it will be sold in — and a reason not to reject an oil you tested in a cold January workshop for a range that will sell in May.
The five things that govern cold throw — and the many that do not
Cold throw has a short list of inputs. Getting the list right saves a great deal of money, because three of the five cost nothing.

And what does nothing at all
The wick does nothing for cold throw. Neither does the wick size, the burn time, the flame, the pool or the number of wicks — there is no pool in an unlit jar. Wax grade does very little: CSI 464, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 differ in melting behaviour, which is a hot-throw variable, and their main relevance here is the ceiling they put on load: 10%, 13% and 13% respectively, with Eco Soy CSI 400 publishing none. Dye does nothing. And the surface finish matters only at the margins — a frosted or cratered top has slightly more exposed area than a glass-smooth one, which is a real effect and a tiny one next to the choice of oil.
What to expect by fragrance family — honestly
There is no measured cold-throw scale anywhere in this industry, CSI included, and any table that claims to rank oils by cold throw is someone's nose written up as data. What can be said with confidence is how families behave, because that follows from the volatility of the materials the pages list.

Two practical readings come out of that table. The first is that a range built entirely from the bottom four rows will under-present itself at a stall and over-deliver at home; a range built entirely from the top four will do the reverse. The second is about colour: the materials that make gourmand and amber candles carry hot are frequently the ones that tint wax. Cinnamon Vanilla publishes 2.5% vanillin and moderate discolouration; Dark Vanilla states vanillin in the vanilla and amber base notes. That yellowing is cosmetic rather than a performance fault, and it is easily managed by pouring those oils into amber, black or coloured glass and keeping the 0% vanillin oils — British Rose, Citrus Lemon, Sandalwood, Eucalyptus Spearmint — for white and pastel wax.
Where a page publishes nothing about its behaviour, this guide says nothing about it. Many of the 92 oil pages carry a family and a load range and no more; a smaller number say something specific about cold performance. For those, ask on WhatsApp for what is known rather than treating silence as a verdict — silence on a product page means the page has not been written out in full, not that the oil is weak.
How to judge cold throw so the answer means something
Nose tests are easy to run and very easy to run badly. The protocol below removes the four things that most often make a comparison meaningless: unequal cure, unequal headspace, unequal temperature and a tired nose.
A five-oil round in 15 gm bottles — Citrus Lemon ₹81.42, British Rose ₹94.40, Lavender ₹105.02, Fresh Strawberries ₹113.28 and Apple Cinnamon ₹93.22 — costs ₹487.34 and gives you 15 g of each, which is enough for a 150 g test jar at 8% with a little to spare. That is the right size of commitment for a judgement you are going to build a range on.
What cold throw does not tell you
Three honest limits, because a page that only praised cold throw would be selling you something.
It is not a prediction of hot throw
The materials that make a jar sing unlit are not the materials that carry a room at hour three. Sometimes the two align, often they do not, and the relationship deserves its own examination rather than an assumption. The practical rule is to score both on the same cured candle and to write them in separate columns, so that a strong cold sniff never talks you out of running the burn test.
It is not a measure of oil quality or concentration
A quiet cold sniff can be a deliberately base-heavy formulation doing exactly what it was built to do. Sandalwood at ₹5.03 a gram and Woody Oud at ₹4.53 a gram are not weak oils because a sealed jar of them is softer in the hand than a citrus. They are woody orientals, and their work begins when the wick is lit.
The bottle is not the candle
Neat oil in a bottle is a completely different medium from oil dispersed at 8% through solid wax, and a bottle that knocks you over can settle into a polite candle while a modest-smelling bottle can bloom. Judge cold throw from a cured jar, never from an open bottle on the bench — that is a test of the bottle.
What cold throw costs, and where the money is best spent
Cold throw is unusually cheap to improve because two of its five levers are free. Here is the arithmetic on a 150 g jar candle, which is the size most Indian D2C brands sell: 150 g of CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo is ₹76.11, 12 g of Citrus Lemon at 8% is ₹33.98, an Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1) is ₹5.90 and the Black Glass Jar with Black Lid is ₹107.00 at the 10-pack — ₹222.99 a candle in materials. The same build with British Rose is ₹225.83.
Now look at where the money actually sits. The jar is ₹107.00 of that — more than the wax and the oil together. Which is why the cheapest meaningful upgrade to your cold throw is almost never the oil: it is putting a lid on a vessel that did not have one, waiting the full cure, and storing the stock closed. Moving from an open Amber Shiny Glass Jar at ₹47.20 to the lidded jar is ₹59.80 a unit, and it buys you a headspace that holds the fragrance between your workshop and your customer's hand.
Raising the load is the next lever and it is modest: 8% to 10% on Citrus Lemon is ₹566.40 across 50 candles, and it is capped by the lower of the wax's stated ceiling and the oil page's stated range — 10% for CSI 464, and the Citrus Lemon page states soy 6–10%, so 10% is the limit either way. Changing the oil is the largest and slowest lever, because it changes your product name, your photographs and your listing. Run it in that order and you will spend the least money for the most improvement.
For a 50-candle festive run in that build, materials come to ₹11,149.70. If the cold throw of that run is going to decide whether a stall sells out on a Saturday, the two weeks of cure and the 24 hours with the lid on are the highest-return decisions you will make all month, and they cost nothing at all.
