Quick answers — read this first
Why is my fragrance oil not mixing into the wax? Four common reasons, and the melt tells you which. Wax below its add window makes the oil seize; water makes it hazy and spitting; a short stir or a wrong order of additions leaves streaks in an otherwise fluid melt; and a load above the governing ceiling leaves a clear layer that returns however long you stir.

What does it mean when the wax goes thick and grainy as soon as the oil goes in? That is seizing, and the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page names the cause in its own words: adding too cool causes fragrance to seize. The wax has begun to crystallise and cannot take oil into a matrix that is already setting. Bring it gently back into 80–90°C and give it the published two-minute stir.

Can I fix a batch where the oil will not go in? Usually, and usually with wax rather than heat. If you are above the governing ceiling, divide the oil weight by the ceiling to get the wax you need: 60 g of oil at a 10% maximum needs 600 g of wax, so a 500 g melt takes 100 g more — ₹50.74 on Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464.

Which ceiling applies, the wax page or the oil page? The lower of the two, always. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%; Fresh Strawberries states 6–9%; together the governing figure is 9%. Stirring cannot make a wax hold more than its page says it holds.

The four faults that all present as “the oil will not mix”, sorted by what the melt looks like in the jug. Straight answer
My fragrance oil will not mix into the melted wax — what has gone wrong and can I still save the batch?
Almost always one of four things, and the jug tells you which before you touch it. If the melt went stiff, grainy or cloudy the instant the oil hit, the wax was below its add window — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page says plainly that adding too cool causes fragrance to seize — and the fix is a gentle return to 80–90°C followed by the published two-minute stir. If the melt is hazy and spitting, you have water in it from a wet vessel, a steamy double boiler or monsoon condensation; water cannot be stirred into wax and that batch should be kept back rather than sold. If the melt is fluid and clear but streaky, it is under-stirred or something went in out of order — give it two more slow minutes and check the jug wall and base. And if a clear layer keeps coming back no matter how long you stir, you are above the governing ceiling: the lower of the wax page's stated maximum and the oil page's stated candle range. That one is arithmetic, not effort. Divide the oil weight by the ceiling to get the wax you need — 60 g of oil at the 10% Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 publishes needs 600 g of wax, so a 500 g melt takes 100 g more, which is ₹50.74 of flakes and turns two overloaded jars into three good ones at ₹168.74 each. Adding more oil to a melt that is already refusing oil is the one move that makes every version of this problem worse.
One line: Stiff and grainy means too cold, hazy means water, streaky means under-stirred, and a returning clear layer means you are over the lower of the two published ceilings.

Four different faults, one complaint

“It will not mix” is a description of your feelings, not of the wax. The wax is being much more specific.

Before you change anything, look at the jug for ten seconds and answer two questions. Is the melt still fluid, or has it gone stiff and grainy? And is what you can see a streak, a haze or a separate layer? Those two questions sort this problem into four faults that have almost nothing in common except the moment they appear.

The last row is included so you can rule it out, not because this page covers it. The CSI principle
Every one of these faults has a cheap fix and an expensive reflex. The cheap fix is wax, heat or time. The expensive reflex is always more fragrance oil.

Fault one: the wax was below its window, and the oil seized

The wax was already on its way to being solid. You asked it to dissolve something.

This is the most dramatic version and the most commonly misread. You add the oil, and within a few seconds the melt thickens, goes matt, and takes on a grainy or curd-like texture. Sometimes it looks as if the oil has curdled the wax. It has not. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page describes the cause in its own words in its pro tip: adding too cool causes fragrance to seize.

The mechanism is straightforward once you stop thinking of molten wax as a liquid like water. Soy crystallises as it cools, and that process starts well before the wax looks solid. Below the add window a significant part of the melt is already forming crystal structure, and oil cannot go into solution inside a matrix that is setting around it. Instead of dissolving, the oil is stranded between crystals — which is exactly what grain, cloudiness and sudden thickening are.

The published windows are narrow and easy to fall out of. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for fragrance at 80–90°C; the Eco Soy CSI 400 page asks for 85°C within an 80–90°C range. The Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. The Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 page publishes a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C but no fragrance-add figure at all — worth asking about on WhatsApp rather than assuming the soy numbers transfer to a coconut-soy blend.

Why Indian benches lose the window faster than they expect

An air-conditioned room at 18°C, a granite or stone counter, a stainless jug straight off a shelf, a ceiling fan running over the bench, a hill-station studio or a north Indian January morning — every one of these pulls heat out of a small melt quickly, and a 200 g melt has very little heat to lose. One CSI customer reviewing the Mini Electric Wax Melter describes living in a cold region where the temperature would drop within seconds, which is the same problem stated from the other end of the country.

Two small habits fix most of it. Pre-warm the Steel Pouring Pitcher before the wax goes in, and let the fragrance bottle sit at room temperature rather than pouring a cold slug of oil straight from a cool cupboard into a small melt — 60 g of cold oil entering 500 g of wax is a real thermal event, not a rounding error. If you are fighting the window every batch rather than occasionally, a heated Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360.00 removes the fight permanently.

Rescuing a seized melt on direct heat. The instinct is to get the temperature back fast, and a jug straight onto a gas flame or a high-powered induction plate will scorch the wax at the base while the middle is still cold, giving you a darkened, off-smelling batch on top of the original problem. Go back to the same gentle heat you melted with, bring it into the window slowly, confirm with a Pen Thermometer rather than by eye, and only then give it the full two minutes. Wax at 95°C and wax at 85°C look exactly the same.
CHECK THE NUMBER, NOT THE SURFACE
A melt that has just come off the heat is not one temperature. The surface reads hotter than the body, and the body reads hotter than the wax against the wall. Stir once, wait five seconds, then take the reading in the middle of the melt at mid-depth — that is the number the page is talking about. A Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 is the cheapest instrument on the bench and the one that settles the most arguments.

Fault two: something went in out of order

Wax will forgive most things. It will not forgive being asked to dissolve two things at once at the wrong temperature.

Streaks and swirls in an otherwise fluid, clear melt are rarely about the fragrance oil on its own. More often something else is in there — dye, an additive, a second oil — and it went in at a point in the sequence where it could not disperse properly. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page publishes its own order and it is worth following exactly: melt the wax fully, add dye at full melt temperature and stir until it is evenly distributed, let the wax fall to 80–90°C, add the fragrance oil and stir slowly for two full minutes, then pour at 75–80°C.

Additives come before both. The Vybar Additive page is explicit: add Vybar directly to the melted wax and stir thoroughly until fully dissolved, and it says this must be done before adding fragrance or colour. The dose it publishes is 0.5–2% of total wax weight, with 0.5–1% recommended for soy — on a 200 g candle that is 1 g to 2 g, which at the 100 g pack price is about ₹6.24 of additive. Follow the sequence printed on the grade in front of you rather than a sequence remembered from a video.

There is a fourth thing that goes in out of order more often than any of these, and it is the wax itself. Adding fragrance to a melt that still has unmelted flakes or chunks sitting on the base is a guaranteed streak: those pieces melt later, after the oil has already distributed through the liquid part, and they dilute a portion of the batch that you have no way of identifying afterwards. Wait for a completely clear melt with nothing on the bottom before the oil goes anywhere near it.

Fault three: you are above the governing ceiling

No amount of stirring will persuade a wax to hold more oil than its own page says it holds.

This is the fault that wastes the most time, because it looks like a mixing problem and it is not. You stir, the surface clears, you keep stirring, and within thirty seconds a thin clear layer is back on top. Stir again, same result. That is not poor technique. That is a melt telling you it is saturated.

Two published numbers decide what a given combination can hold: the wax grade's stated maximum, and the oil page's stated candle usage range. The lower of the two governs, every time, and it is startling how often makers check one and not the other. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10% of total wax weight. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 state up to 13%. Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish a ceiling at all, so on that grade the oil page's number is the only published figure you have — and it is worth asking CSI on WhatsApp.

The last row is the honest one. Mahogany Shea publishes no family, no candle usage range, no flash point and no cure time — and it is not alone; several oils in the 92-strong range publish very little. Where there is no oil range, the wax page's maximum is the only published number in the room. General practice with an unknown oil is to start low, around 6–8%, keep well inside the wax figure, and burn-test before you commit a season's stock. Do not treat silence as permission to go high, and ask on WhatsApp if you want CSI's guidance for a specific oil.

Premium and perfume-grade pages read differently again. Vanilla Orange Blossom is described on its page as perfume-grade rather than a diluted candle fragrance, and its candle guidance is to start at 7% because the concentration means you need less than a standard candle oil, up to 10%. An oil like that going into Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 still governs at 10% — but the page is telling you the interesting number is the bottom of the range, not the top.

Reading a percentage off the wrong base. CSI product pages state fragrance load as a percentage of wax weight: 8% of 200 g of wax is 16 g of oil, and the finished candle weighs 216 g. If you calculate 8% of the finished 200 g candle instead, you get 14.8 g of wax-basis oil and a slightly weaker candle — small, but it compounds across a range and it makes your recipes untranslatable. Worse in the other direction: someone working to a 13% figure they read on a Chunks page, while pouring Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, is 30% over that grade's stated maximum before they have made a single mistake at the bench.
Going into a festive run? Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026, so with a 14–21 day cure plus courier time the festive candles want to be poured by about mid-October. Buy one spare 1 kg pack of your base wax — Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40 — and keep it sealed as a dilution reserve. One saved 500 g melt pays for it twice over.

Fault four: water got into the wax

This is the one fault on the page that stirring, heating and dilution all fail to fix.

A melt that goes milky or hazy rather than grainy, that spits or pops as it heats, and that never clears no matter what you do, usually has water in it. Wax and water do not mix and cannot be made to: there is no temperature and no stirring time that puts water into solution in wax. It will either flash off as steam — which is where the spitting comes from — or stay as a haze, and it takes fragrance dispersion down with it.

The usual routes in are ordinary. A double boiler that boiled hard enough to splash. A pitcher or spatula washed between fragrances and put back into service damp. A jar rinsed and not dried. Condensation on a cold steel vessel brought into a humid room — a real and underrated problem in Mumbai, Kochi, Chennai and Kolkata through the monsoon, where a jug straight from an air-conditioned room into a 90% humidity workshop can bead visibly within a minute.

Prevention is the whole treatment. Dry every vessel and tool completely before it touches wax; wipe a cold pitcher and let it reach room temperature before the melt goes in; keep water level in a double boiler low enough that it cannot splash over; and if you wash a Silicone Spatula mid-batch, dry it properly rather than shaking it. None of this is CSI-specific. All of it is the difference between a batch you can sell and a batch you cannot.

Pouring a hazy batch anyway and hoping the cure clears it. It will not. A cure changes how fragrance is distributed and how the scent reads over two to three weeks; it does not remove water. What you will get is cloudy jars, possible surface defects and an unpredictable burn, sold under your own label. Pour it into testers, label it, burn it to learn what water actually does to a candle, and write the batch off. It is the cheapest lesson on this page.

The mid-batch rescue, step by step

You have a jug of hot wax and about ten minutes. Here is the order to work in.

1. Stop stirring and take two readingsPut the stick down. Take the melt's temperature at mid-depth with a Pen Thermometer, and write down what you actually see: stiff or fluid, hazy or clear, streaked or layered. Then write down the two numbers that decide everything else — the wax weight in the jug and the oil weight you added. If you did not weigh the oil, that is the first thing to fix for next time; for now, estimate it from the bottle and treat the rescue as approximate.

2. If it is cold, warm it back into the window — gentlyFor the grades that publish a figure, that means 80–90°C: the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page's band, and the 85°C the Eco Soy CSI 400 page names. Use the same gentle heat you melted with, not a flame or a high setting, and give the melt time to even out before you read it. Then stir slowly for the full two minutes — centre, walls, base, fold — and look again. Seizing that was purely thermal usually disappears at this step.

3. If a clear layer persists, do the arithmetic and add waxDivide the oil weight by the governing ceiling to get the wax you need, then subtract the wax you already have. Worked example: 500 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 with 60 g of oil is 12%, and the page's maximum is 10%. 60 ÷ 0.10 = 600 g of wax needed, so add 100 g — ₹50.74. Add the extra flakes to the hot melt, let them melt fully, bring the whole thing back to the window and give it another full two minutes. Never correct in the other direction by adding oil.

Re-plan the pour, then treat the batch as a testThe melt is now bigger than you planned: 600 g of wax plus 60 g of oil is 660 g of pourable material, which is three 220 g jars rather than two — an extra Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 and a jar you had not budgeted for. Number the jars as you pour, cure them normally, and burn one before any of them is sold. A rescued batch is a test batch, and the honest thing is to treat it as one.

Read the bottom two rows together. The rescue does not save you money in absolute terms — you have spent ₹50.74 more — but it converts ₹437.78 of wax and oil that was heading for a defective pour into three saleable-quality jars at ₹168.74 each. The alternative, pouring at 12% into a wax whose page states 10%, risks the whole ₹437.78 plus the jars and the wicks.

A second worked example shows why the oil page matters as much as the wax page. Suppose you are on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at its stated 13% maximum, pouring 1 kg with 130 g of Fresh Strawberries — ₹460.20 of oil. The oil page states a candle range of 6–9%, so the governing ceiling is 9%, not 13%. Bringing 130 g of oil under 9% needs about 1,444 g of wax: roughly 445 g more Chunks, or ₹266.56. Checking the oil page before you weigh would have cost you nothing.

Prevention: three numbers, written where you will see them

Every fault on this page is prevented by information you already have and do not have in front of you.

When a bottle arrives, spend one minute on it. Open the product page, and write three things on the bottle itself with a marker: the oil's stated candle usage range, the governing ceiling with the wax you actually pour, and the grams that ceiling works out to for your standard candle size. That is it. Three numbers on the label mean you never again calculate a load with a jug of hot wax in one hand.

Three more habits close the gap. Weigh the oil into a cup on a scale rather than pouring it straight from the bottle into the jug, so a slip of the wrist costs you a re-weigh and not a batch. And write the add temperature and the stir time in the batch log next to the load; when something goes wrong three batches later, the log is the only thing that will tell you what changed.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my wax go thick and grainy when I add fragrance oil?
The wax was below its fragrance-add window and has begun to crystallise, so the oil cannot go into solution. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states it directly: adding too cool causes fragrance to seize. Bring the melt gently back to 80–90°C, confirm with a thermometer rather than by eye, and stir slowly for the published two full minutes.
How much extra wax do I need to fix an over-loaded melt?
Divide the oil weight by the governing ceiling, then subtract the wax you already have. A 500 g melt of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 carrying 60 g of oil is at 12% against a stated maximum of 10%: 60 ÷ 0.10 = 600 g, so you add 100 g — ₹50.74 — and pour three 220 g jars instead of two overloaded ones.
Which ceiling wins, the wax page or the fragrance oil page?
The lower one, always. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states up to 13% but Fresh Strawberries states a candle range of 6–9%, so that pairing governs at 9%. Checking only the wax page is how makers end up 40% over a limit they never knew applied.
Can I add more fragrance oil to fix streaks in the wax?
No, and it is the most expensive reflex on the bench. Streaks in a fluid melt mean under-stirring or a mistimed addition; a clear layer that returns means you are already at or above the governing ceiling. In both cases more oil makes the fault worse and takes you past a published maximum.
My melt went cloudy and spits when it heats — what is it?
Almost certainly water, from a splashing double boiler, a damp tool or condensation on a cold vessel in humid weather. Water cannot be stirred into wax and no cure removes it. Dry every vessel and tool, keep the batch back as testers, and start again.
Does CSI publish a fragrance-add temperature for every wax?
No. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks gives 80–90°C and Eco Soy CSI 400 gives 85°C within 80–90°C. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring, and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 publishes a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C but no fragrance-add figure. Ask on WhatsApp rather than assuming one grade's number transfers to another.
