Why one container is the highest-leverage decision you make

A candle jar is not an ingredient. Wax is: you move from Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 to Eco Soy CSI 400, retest briefly and carry on. So is fragrance. A jar is a chassis. Everything else bolts onto it, and changing it changes all of it at once.

Work through what is attached. Internal diameter sets the wick, because melt pool area is a function of diameter. Fill capacity sets the recipe: a 150g fill at a 10% load is 135g of wax and 15g of oil, and every batch card assumes it. Outer diameter and height set the label diecut. Packed height with the lid on sets the box. Colour and finish set the photography — change the jar and you reshoot the range.

The commercial argument is simpler. Scent is the variable your customer is choosing between; the jar is not. Nobody browsing a Diwali gifting page compares vessel geometry — they choose between sandalwood and vanilla. Twelve scents in one consistent jar reads as a brand. The same twelve across four random vessels reads as a clearance table.

What four jar families actually cost you

The typical route: you start on a 150g clear jar with a golden lid, a customer asks for black, a corporate order wants a smaller gifting size, somebody suggests matte. Eighteen months later you hold four families, and no single decision was wrong on its own day. Add them up and three costs appear.

Read the last two rows against each other. The four-family shelf holds more glass and ₹2,086 more money, and still cannot take one 150-unit corporate order without a fresh purchase and a wait. The standardised shelf holds less capital and fills that order twice over. Depth in one line beats breadth across four every time an order matters.

Cost three is the packaging SKU count, and it never goes away. One container means one label diecut, one box size, one shot list. Four means four of each, held permanently and each with its own minimum order quantity at the printer. Worse, finished SKUs multiply rather than add: twelve scents in one jar is twelve things to make, price, photograph and count. Twelve scents in four jars is forty-eight.

Choosing the jar you standardise on

Four tests, in this order. A container has to pass all four, and the order matters because failing test one makes the other three irrelevant.

Labels, boxes and everything that has to fit

Three dimensions of the jar land in your packaging budget. Outer diameter and straight body height set the label diecut — the printable band, not the jar. Packed height including the lid sets the internal height of the box. Weight of the filled jar sets the cushioning. Get all three from a physical sample. You cannot get them from a photograph, and you should not order 500 labels from one.

The order that saves money is: commit to the jar, fill one, cure it, lid it, then measure. Print the diecut against that. Choose the box against the lidded height with about a centimetre of clearance for filler. Doing it the other way round is how brands end up with a container decision made by their packaging supplier.

The four are not interchangeable. The outer box is the structure and the brand surface. Tissue paper is presentation and a light abrasion barrier — it stops the label scuffing, and does almost nothing for impact. Crinkle paper filler stops the jar travelling inside the box, which is what actually breaks glass in transit. Bubble roll is the impact layer wrapped directly around the jar, and it is the one people skip to save money and then pay for in breakages.

One jar geometry means one box size at one minimum quantity, one filler volume you can cost, and one packing method learned once — so per-unit packing time stops being a range and becomes a number you can quote a corporate order from. Scaling past a few hundred orders a month is largely an exercise in removing exactly this variation.

The second container, the reorder rhythm, and when to wait

Standardising is a default, not a life sentence. The rule is that a second container must be a decision with a reason, a price point and a forecast attached — not a jar you bought because a customer asked once.

Only two extensions are worth making early, and they go in opposite directions. Down: a votive, opening an entry price and a gifting multipack. Up: a large jar, putting a visible ceiling on the range so the core jar reads as the sensible middle. Pick one — adding both puts you back at three families.

The arithmetic argues for going down first. Qualifying the 70g votive costs ₹820.89 against ₹6,007.68 for a 600g jar — ₹5,186.79 spent purely on learning. A wide jar also carries a wicking risk the votive does not: it may need more than one wick to reach the wall. If cash is the constraint, extend downward.

After that the reorder is trivial: one jar, one reorder unit, one number to watch. If your unit is the pack of 20 at ₹1,888 and you pour 80 units a month, you order four packs monthly and stop thinking about it. That is what a chassis is for.

One more: do not standardise on a jar that is out of stock more often than it is in. A jar that disappears for six weeks in October is not a chassis, whatever its unit price says. Check availability across a couple of months, and ask about restock timing on the supplier you consolidate with.
