What a 100 g bottle is for

The 100 g buyer is past the first-candle stage: a wax you trust, a wick that works in your jar, and a list of scents you think will sell. What is missing is evidence. The expensive mistake here is buying a kilo of a scent before anyone except you has smelled it burning. A kilo of Lavender ties up ₹5,221; a kilo of the dearest designer-inspired oil ties up ₹24,056. A 100 g bottle ties up the price of a couple of finished candles.

So the job of 100 g is narrow: produce enough candles from one scent to test it properly and to put it in real customers' hands. Fragrance load is a percentage of the finished candle, so a 200g candle at 8% holds 16g of oil and 184g of wax. The table runs that arithmetic for the vessel sizes a sample batch actually uses.

First, a 100 g bottle pairs with a little over a kilo of wax at 8%, whatever size you pour. Second, load changes the count sharply: at the 13% ceiling stated for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, a bottle makes three 200g candles instead of six. What 100 g costs across the range

CSI lists 106 fragrance-oil products. We counted every one sold as a fragrance oil — classic candle oils, the Royale and oud lines, designer- and Bath and Body Works-inspired oils — and excluded essential oils, perfume and attar bases, diffuser bases and fixative. 105 list a 100 g pack and 92 have it in stock in September 2026; the table groups those 92 by price.

Read the last column, not the first. A ₹799 bottle costs more than two and a half times a ₹300 one, but inside a 200g candle that is ₹127.84 of oil against ₹48. If your candle retails at several hundred rupees, a scent customers love at ₹128 of oil beats a scent they ignore at ₹48. At the sampling stage, price should only rule out the extremes — a ₹2,000 bottle for a ₹299 candle, and little else.

Three details matter for sampling. Fifteen oils have 100 g as their smallest in-stock pack — mostly the 100 g / 500 g / 1 kg lines such as Midnight Bakhoor Royale — so for those, 100 g is the trial size. Thirteen oils list a 100 g pack that is sold out today; on some, such as Royal Oud, the 500 g and 1 kg are still in stock. A few scents also appear twice at different prices, so check the link before you reorder.

15 g, 50 g or 100 g: which size to sample in

Most classic CSI oils come in 15 g, 50 g, 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg. Across the range, 50 oils have 15 g and 100 g both in stock; on those, 15 g costs a median 23.72% more per gram, and on 23 of them more than 25%. The 50 g pack is different: of 77 oils with 50 g and 100 g in stock, 42 are priced the same per gram, though 18 carry more than 10%. Here is how that plays out on the five sample-run oils.

On these five the range-wide pattern flips: four are among the oils where 50 g is clearly dearer per gram than 100 g. Several low-priced classics carry the steepest small-pack premiums in the range. So: buy 15 g to smell — the whole bottle costs only ₹25.25–₹48.02 more than the same grams from a 100 g, and it is the cheapest way to cut ten candidates to five. Buy 100 g to pour. Buy 50 g only when it is priced flat against 100 g, as on Blue Ocean.

The real premium: 100 g against 1 kg

Small bottles are assumed to be poor value. On CSI's listed prices that is mostly untrue. We compared 100 g × 10 with the 1 kg price for every oil with both packs in stock: 86 oils.

So 58 of the 86 oils are within 5% of their kilo rate at 100 g, and the median premium is 1.2%: for those, the kilo is not cheaper, only bigger. The fourteen above 10% are where size starts to cost money, so here are the widest gaps in the unit that matters — rupees of oil in one 200g candle at 8%.

The decision rule that falls out of both tables: if an oil's 100 g is within 5% of its kilo rate, sample as many scents as you like at 100 g. If it is more than 10% dearer, buy exactly one 100 g bottle for the test and never a second — the next purchase of that scent should be 500 g or 1 kg. Five scents worth sampling at 100 g

A good shortlist spans families, so the test tells you about your customers rather than about five similar florals. These five cover floral, woody, gourmand, fruity and fresh, and all are under ₹500 for 100 g. Each card shows every pack, the price per 100 g at each size, and how many 200g candles at 8% each pack scents. Swap any card for a scent in the same family.

The five 100 g bottles total ₹2,060.32. The same grams at each oil's 1 kg rate would be ₹2,003.12, so ₹57.20 across five scents is the full price of not committing. A kilo of each would be ₹20,031.20 in bottles before a single customer has smelled one.

The costed five-scent sample run

Here is a complete, buyable basket that turns five 100 g bottles into evidence. Each scent is poured at 8% into two 150g Clear Glass Jars for your burn tests (12g of oil each) and eleven 85g Golden Aluminium Tins for customers (6.8g each) — 98.8g of every bottle, leaving 1.2g as a weighing margin. Wax is 1,136.2g per scent, 5,681g for five, rounded up to 6 kg as a spill and top-up allowance.

Fragrance is the smallest share of the sample run. Wax and vessels cost more than three times the five bottles, so skimping on scents saves little — cutting to three saves at most ₹948.12 of oil and loses two data points. One British Rose tester tin costs ₹108.51: ₹46.84 of wax (78.2g at ₹0.599/g), ₹23.27 of oil (6.8g at ₹3.422/g), a ₹30 tin, a ₹5.90 wick and a ₹2.50 sticker. If you already hold wax and wicks from an earlier test, the run costs only the oil, tins and jars.

When a scent earns a bigger bottle

A scent graduates when three things are true. After that, stop buying it in 100 g bottles: repeat small purchases are how the premium on the steeper oils adds up. The next pack depends on how many candles of that scent you can sell before you would reorder.

If the first two are true but not the third, one more 100 g is fine on an oil priced flat to its kilo, such as Woody Oud or Blue Ocean.
