The footprint at 50, 100 and 200 candles a month

A home candle business runs out of a kitchen and a cupboard, in a flat that also has to function as a flat. The capital requirement is modest — the real start-up cost is here — which is precisely why money is not what fails first. Space is, and nobody quantifies it, because it never appears on an invoice. So quantify it: three surfaces, measured in shelf units of 90 × 30 cm — 0.27 m², roughly one shelf of a standard storage rack. Everything below assumes a 150g fill at a 10% fragrance load — 135g of wax, 15g of oil.

Read the cure column again. Between 50 and 200 candles a month, storage and bench roughly double while cure shelving multiplies by five. At 50 you pour once and the shelf clears before you pour again. At 200 you pour weekly, so a batch poured on the 22nd is still curing when the 1st of the next month goes down beside it. Cure space is sized for overlapping batches, not for one month's output.

Two consequences follow. Cure space is stock you have paid for and cannot yet sell: at 100 candles a month with ₹245.16 of materials in each, that shelf holds roughly ₹24,516 of working capital for three weeks — a cash-flow fact expressed as a furniture problem. And you cannot fix a cure shortage by curing less. Fourteen days is the floor for a soy container candle; shipping at day four to free the shelf produces the weak-throw complaint that ends the reorder.

Buy to your storage, not to your ambition

Bulk buying is sound advice for a workshop with a stockroom. In a flat it converts a cash advantage into a storage liability — and the honest thing for the supplier to say is that on most of the CSI wax range there is barely any cash advantage to convert. Per-kilogram pricing is flat or nearly flat across pack sizes.

The clearest case is CSI 464. One 10kg bag is ₹5,074. Two 5kg bags are ₹2,537 each, which is also ₹5,074. Identical money — but only 5kg is open to the air at a time, it fits a shelf a 10kg sack will not, and one person can carry it upstairs. There is no version of the home-business argument in which the 10kg bag wins. Wicks are the same: Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) are ₹5.90 per wick at 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000, so the 1,000-pack at ₹5,900 buys nothing per unit and twenty months of storage. Storing wax, fragrance and glass in an Indian home

A commercial store has a controlled room. You have the space next to the pressure cooker. Materials respond to heat, damp and light predictably, and four placement decisions remove almost all of the risk at zero cost.

None of this is a regulation and none of it is dramatic. It is the short list of habits separating a home operation that runs for years from one that has an incident in month three, and most of it costs nothing.

Use a controlled heat source rather than an open flame where you can. A double boiler over a gas ring works, but it puts a flame under a pan of oil-bearing wax in a kitchen where other cooking is happening. An induction plate removes the flame; a melter removes the pan too. Define a pour window and clear the room for it. The genuinely hazardous part of candle making is about twenty minutes long, from the wax reaching pouring temperature to the jars standing filled and still. Run that window when children and pets are not in the kitchen, handles turned inward, on a surface that is dry and clear of cloth. Closed shoes, a lid to hand. Never carry hot wax through a room you have not looked at first.

Ventilate when handling fragrance oils. Decanting concentrated oils in a small closed kitchen gives you a headache at best. Open a window, run the exhaust, weigh at the start rather than over an open melter. If a particular oil bothers you, that is information — check its MSDS, and ask CSI for it if you do not have it. Keep materials and finished stock out of reach of children and pets: oils, dyes and wick stickers are not toys, and a curing shelf of glass at toddler height is an obvious hazard. That is the second reason cure shelving wants to be high and dedicated rather than improvised on the sofa.

The home-scale monthly order, itemised

Every line you add costs shelf space permanently and adds a test-burn cycle. A narrow range is not a limitation — it is what makes a home business repeatable. Per candle, in materials actually consumed: ₹68.50 of wax (135g at ₹0.5074/g), ₹76.36 of fragrance (15g at the ₹5.09/g blended rate of that mix), ₹5.90 of wick and ₹94.40 of glass — ₹245.16 per 150g candle, before labels, packaging, freight and your time. Note which line is largest. Glass is 38.5% of the materials cost, more than wax and wick combined, and it is also the line most likely to break and the one that eats the most storage volume. Twice the candles costs ₹25,467.28 against a straight doubling of ₹25,656.08 — a saving of exactly ₹188.80, which is one 20-pack of test wicks you did not buy twice. Everything else scales one-for-one. Materials cost per candle does not fall between 50 and 100 a month. Nobody selling wax has an incentive to say that, but it follows directly from the flat per-kilogram pricing above, and it changes how you plan: growth from a home kitchen comes from price and product mix, not from a volume discount that is not there. Both are five-star reviews, and both name freight. That is a cost structure, not a policy choice: wax and glass are heavy, and heavy goods are priced by weight over distance. The response is not to buy less but to buy less often, in one shipment. Ordering wax on the 3rd, glass on the 11th and fragrance on the 19th pays freight three times; the same materials in one monthly order pay it once.
