Quick answers — read this first
What should a candle startup buy first? A test kit, not a production kit: one wax, three wick sizes, one jar family, four fragrance trial sizes, a scale and a thermometer₹4,141.82, and that is the whole of month one.

Why not order everything at once? Cure takes 14–21 days, so a candle poured in week one cannot be judged until week three. Buying production quantities of a scent you have not smelled at day 21 is buying blind.

How many scents should I launch with? Four scents, one jar family, one wax. Eight scents, three jar families and two waxes cost ₹6,384.76 more for the same 100 candles, plus dead stock.

What should I not buy in month one? The melter (₹2,360), the 10kg wax bag (₹5,074), the pouring funnel (₹1,888), six dyes (₹1,416), a second jar family (₹2,140) — ₹15,807.82 in all.
The short answer
Month 1 — test, ₹4,141.82: 1.5kg of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, ten Clear Glass Jars with Golden Lid, three wick sizes, four fragrance trials, scale and thermometer.
Month 2 — confirm, ₹7,816.88: the winning wick in a pack of 100, 5kg of the winning wax, twenty more jars, all four scents at 100g, and care stickers.
Month 3 — produce, ₹26,034.52: 15kg of wax, 1.6kg of fragrance, 100 jars, 100 wicks. That is 100 finished candles at an average documented material cost of ₹248.23 each.
Ninety days from first order to first shipped candle — the cure windows are what make it ninety MONTH 1 · TEST ORDER ₹4,141.82 CURE 14–21 d · verdict blocked d8 wick verdict — a burn test needs 3 days, not 21 d26 scent verdict MONTH 2 · WORKING SIZES ₹7,816.88 CURE 14–21 d · verdict blocked d55 recipe locked MONTH 3 · PRODUCTION ₹26,034.52 CURE 14–21 d · verdict blocked LAUNCH Launch date = last pour + 21 days cure + dispatch. It is an output, not a choice → Day 0 · order Day 30 Day 60 Day 90 · ship
Solid black is money moving and work happening. The three dashed blocks are cure: periods in which you own stock, own candles, and are not allowed to conclude anything about either. They occupy sixty-three of the ninety days. The wick verdict lands on day 8 because a burn test measures pool geometry and needs no cure; only the scent verdict waits. Everything right of a dashed block is scheduled by it — which is why the launch date is an output of this diagram, not an input.
Straight answer
What should a candle startup in India actually buy, and in what order?
Buy in three orders across three months, not one order in one week. Month one is a test kit costing ₹4,141.82: 1.5kg of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, one pack of ten Clear Glass Jars with Golden Lid, three wick sizes, four fragrance trial sizes, a weighing scale at ₹354 and a pen thermometer at ₹354. Month two costs ₹7,816.88 and buys only what month one proved: the winning wick in a pack of 100, 5kg of wax, twenty jars, all four oils in 100g, and care stickers at ₹413 per 500. Month three costs ₹26,034.52 — the first real production run of 100 candles. Total: ₹37,993.22. The ninety-day shape is arithmetic, not caution: cure takes 14 to 21 days, so a scent poured in week one cannot be judged until week three. Keep the range at four scents, one jar, one wax, and defer the melter, the dye range and the second jar family — ₹15,807.82 you do not need yet.
One line: three orders, ninety days, ₹37,993.22 — test month, working-sizes month, production month — and the calendar is set by a 14–21 day cure you cannot compress.
The whole test month turns on four small bottles. Fragrance oils start at ₹68.44 for 15g (Eucalyptus Spearmint) and there are 92 oils in stock — buy four, not fourteen, and buy them small enough that a wrong choice costs under ₹150.

Why cure decides your launch date, and why you cannot skip the test month

Every new brand picks a launch date and works forwards. The calendar only works backwards, from a three-week wait you do not control.

A soy container candle is finished when the wax crystal structure has settled and the fragrance has distributed through it, not when it is solid. That takes 14 to 21 days — citrus settles at 14, florals want 14 to 18, woody and gourmand oils improve to 21. A scent poured in week one cannot be judged until week three. Burn four candidates at day three and you will systematically select against the base-heavy oils that perform best in soy.

The failure this causes. A maker orders ₹20,000 of stock at once, pours the whole range in a fortnight, tests at 72 hours, decides two scents are weak and buys two replacements. Six weeks later the original two, fully cured in the cupboard, are the best candles they have made. They have paid twice, hold four scents where they wanted two, and never compared anything at the same age. The cost is not the wasted oil. It is the six weeks.
1
Split the two verdicts — they run on different clocksWick sizing is geometry: does the pool reach the glass in two to three hours without soot or mushrooming? Answerable in three days, because a short cure does not change a pool's diameter. The scent verdict is chemistry and needs the full 14 to 21 days. Pour both matrices the same day: wick answer in week one, scent answer in week three. Sizing method by jar diameter.
2
Work the calendar backwards, in real datesOrder one placed 10 September 2026 lands around 15 September; pour that day. Wick verdict 18 September. Scent verdict 6 October. Working sizes ordered then arrive 13 October, poured 14 October, cured to 4 November. Production stock ordered 5 November lands 12 November, poured 13 November, cured to 4 December. First dispatch: 5–10 December 2026.
3
Check it against the date you actually wantedDiwali 2026 falls on 8 November — on that schedule your candles are still curing. One legitimate compression exists: skip the confirmation batch, order production straight off the 6 October verdict, pour 14 October and cure 14 days rather than 21, finishing 28 October. It works, and it costs you the confirmation batch — a hundred candles on a recipe made once. Decide that in October, not November.
The formula, so you can run it for any date
Launch date = production pour + 21 days cure + 7 days dispatch, and the production pour is itself 55 to 60 days after order one, because two cure windows and two delivery windows sit in front of it. So subtract about 90 days from the date you want to sell. For a March wedding-season launch, you order trial oils in December.

The cure window is also the only part of the ninety days where you hold stock, hold finished goods and generate nothing. It happens twice before you have sold anything; launch eight scents, re-test half, and it happens six times. Wider first-year picture: what it actually costs to start a candle business in India.

Month 1 — the test kit, itemised

Everything in this order exists to answer two questions: which wick, and which four scents. None of it makes candles you can sell.

The kit is built around seven test jars: three for the wick matrix in one scent, four for the scent matrix, one per candidate oil. All seven are poured the same day, so the cure clock runs once rather than four times. The fill is 150g — 135g wax to 15g fragrance, a 10% load, the stated ceiling for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464. That ceiling is a wax-manufacturer formulation limit, not a regulatory one, and it differs by wax — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13%.

Fragrance 3 Sandalwood — 15g The base-heavy candidate, and the one that anchors festive ranges 93.22
Fragrance 4 Vanilla Bean — 15g The dearest of the four at ₹7.65/g in bulk — worth proving before you commit 130.00
Tool Candle Making Weighing Scale Load is a weight percentage. Millilitres will not give you a repeatable recipe 354.00
Tool Pen Thermometer Add temperature is a specification, not a feeling. Buy this one, defer the rest 354.00
Tool Candle Wax Pouring Jug You cannot pour a clean 150g fill from a saucepan. The 600ml steel pitcher at ₹708 is the alternative 531.00
Consumable Candle Wick Stickers — 1 sheet, 40 ₹2.50 each. Forty is four production batches' worth of testing 100.00
Consumable Bamboo Wick Holder — set of 5 Centres the wick while the wax sets. Five is enough for a seven-jar pour in two passes 118.00
Consumable Bamboo Stirring Sticks — pack of 5 Two full minutes of stirring per batch is the specification 118.00
Total Order one, delivered Seven test candles and two decisions 4,141.82
The flat-pricing point: CSI 464 is ₹507.40 per kg at 1kg, 5kg (₹2,537) and 10kg (₹5,074). Eco Candle Wicks Thin are ₹5.90 each at 10, 100 and 1,000. No volume discount on either — so the big bag in month one buys you nothing but 9kg of commitment to a wax you have not poured. Buy what the month needs.

Two absences are deliberate. No colour — dye is ₹236 for 15g, a six-shade range ₹1,416, and colour tells you nothing about whether your wick works. No second jar family, because a second diameter means a second wick test. Read the complete raw material list as a map, not a basket.

A test kit is not a small production kit. It is a different object with a different job, and its job is to be thrown away.

Month 2 — the winners in working sizes, plus packaging

The smallest order of the three, and the most important, because it is the first one you place with evidence instead of opinion.

Month two starts the day the scent verdict lands — day 26 on the diagram, 6 October on the worked calendar. You buy the one wick and four scents you proved, and nothing else. It funds a confirmation batch of twenty candles, five per scent: enough to catch a batch-level defect, small enough that failure costs ₹5,000 rather than ₹26,000, and exactly what photography and first pre-orders need. Shoot the range while the production run cures.

The golden lid on this jar family is doing most of your packaging work — a real reason for a startup to pick a lidded jar. Boxes, sleeves and filler live in the packaging materials collection, ten products priced there rather than in a blog post. The care sticker is the only packaging line that reduces refunds.

Month 3 — the first production run of 100 candles

The only order here sized by a sales forecast rather than a test protocol — and it is three times the other two combined.

One hundred candles, twenty-five per scent, at a 150g fill: 13.5kg of wax and 1.5kg of fragrance. The decision that matters is which size tier you take each oil in, and it is where startups quietly lose money — the instinct is to chase the lowest price per gram, which for a first run is usually wrong.

The per-gram trap, with the actual numbers. You need 375g of each oil. Citrus Lemon is ₹3.00/g at 100g and ₹2.84/g at 500g — cheaper per gram, but ₹1,420 against ₹1,200 for four 100g bottles, and 125g you have no plan for. Across all four oils the 500g route costs ₹9,366.40 against ₹7,739.52 — ₹1,626.88 more cash. Sandalwood makes it cleanest: ₹5.03 per gram at 100g and at 500g, so the bigger bottle offers no advantage at all, only a bigger bill.

Consumable Candle Wick Stickers — 1 sheet × 3 120 stickers for 100 candles 300.00
Total Order three, delivered 100 candles, poured in one week, cured in three 26,034.52

The jar is 36% of this order and has no volume break at all — ₹94.40 each at ten or twenty. If unit cost beats a golden lid, the 200ml Salsa Glass Jar falls from ₹40.12 each at 5 pieces to ₹29.50 at 50 or 100. Decide in month one: changing vessels after the wick test means repeating the wick test.

Running total: ₹4,141.82 + ₹7,816.88 + ₹26,034.52 = ₹37,993.22, ending with 100 cured candles, 20 confirmation candles and 2.3kg of spare wax. Note what is not in it: no equipment beyond ₹1,239 of scale, thermometer and jug, no colour, no moulds, no melter. Growth past this point is a separate problem — see scaling to 1,000 orders a month.

SKU count is the enemy — and what not to buy from us

A startup does not fail because its candles are bad. It fails because it bought eleven versions of a candle nobody had asked for yet.

Every extra dimension multiplies rather than adds: a second jar diameter is a second wick test, a second wax a second fragrance ceiling, every extra scent another 14–21 day cure window. Here is the same 100 candles, bought narrow and bought wide.

Narrow launch vs wide launch · identical output of 100 candles
4 scents / 1 jar / 1 wax / 1 wick / no colour, against 8 scents / 3 jars / 2 waxes / 3 wicks / 6 colours
Line Narrow Wide Difference
Month-one trial oils ₹487.62 (4) ₹791.98 (8) +₹304.36
Production wax ₹7,611.00 (15kg CSI 464) ₹8,069.00 (10kg CSI 464 + 5kg Chunks) +₹458.00
Production fragrance ₹7,739.52 (4 × 400g) ₹7,259.92 (8 × 200g) −₹479.60
Jars for the run ₹9,440.00 (100, one family) ₹12,336.00 (120, three families) +₹2,896.00
Wicks ₹944.00 (100 × C2) ₹2,734.00 (100 each of C1, C2, cotton braided) +₹1,790.00
Colour ₹0.00 ₹1,416.00 (6 × 15g liquid dye) +₹1,416.00
Cash difference +₹6,384.76

Note the honest line in that table: the wide launch is ₹479.60 cheaper on fragrance, because spreading 1.5kg across eight oils lets you buy every one at the small tier. Anyone claiming a narrow range saves money on oil is wrong. Breadth costs everywhere else — jars in pack multiples, a wick SKU per diameter, dye opened once — totalling ₹6,384.76, one and a half test months, plus 20 surplus jars and 200 unwanted wicks.

The cash is the smaller half of it. Eight scents at 12 units each cannot be photographed as a range, stocked, or read as sales data. How much fragrance oil a business actually needs covers the volume side.

The CSI principle
Every SKU you add before launch costs you a cure window, and cure windows are the one input you cannot buy more of.
Money can be raised, wax can be reordered overnight, a wick can be swapped in an afternoon. Twenty-one days is twenty-one days, and a startup that spends three of them on a scent it will drop has spent something it cannot get back.

Which brings us to the part of this page that costs us money. Here is what a candle startup should not buy from CSI in month one, priced, so you can see what you are deferring.

The deferral list · every one of these is a real CSI product we would rather sell you
₹15,807.82 of things to buy later — 3.8 times the entire test month
Item Why not yet
Mini Electric Wax Melter, 1 litre 2,360.00 Excellent product, wrong month. Seven test jars is 945g of wax — a double boiler handles that. Buy it when you are melting 13.5kg a week, which is month three at the earliest
10kg of CSI 464 in month one 5,074.00 ₹507.40/kg at 10kg and ₹507.40/kg at 1kg. There is no discount to capture, only 9kg of commitment to a wax you have not poured yet
Wax Pouring Funnel, 4 nozzles 1,888.00 A throughput tool. It saves time on a 100-jar pour and nothing at all on a seven-jar pour
Six liquid candle dyes, 15g each 1,416.00 ₹236 a shade. Colour is a brand decision that should follow your photography, and undyed soy sells perfectly well
A second jar family — Black Glass Jar with Black Lid, 20 2,140.00 A second diameter is a second wick test and a second cure window. One family until the first one sells out
Performance Wooden Wicks, 10 590.00 ₹59 a wick against ₹9.44 for Eco C2. A premium-tier decision, not a first-range one
Wick Setting Tool 399.00 A ₹118 bamboo wick holder does the job for a seven-jar pour
Premium Candle Wicking Needle 472.00 A moulded-candle tool. If you are pouring containers, you do not need it yet
Candle Wick Trimmer 588.82 A customer accessory and an upsell. Sell it before you own one
Hot Air Gun 531.00 Fixes surface imperfections at volume. At seven jars, re-pour instead
CSI Pro Mixer 349.00 Genuinely good value and the first thing to add in month two. A bamboo stick and two timed minutes will do for seven jars
Total deferred 15,807.82 Money that stays in your account until the test month has told you something

Two categories need no line each. The 20-litre Electric Wax Melter at ₹23,600 costs more than this whole plan. And moulds — ₹153.40 to ₹3,540 across 62 products in the Candle Moulds collection — are a different business: different wax, different wick logic, different customer.

Costing your first candle properly, then pricing from the number

A price built on a documented material cost survives a bad month. A price copied off a competitor's Instagram does not.

You can now cost a candle to the paisa, because every input was bought at a known price in a known pack size. The fixed portion is identical across all four scents.

Material cost per 150g candle · month-three pricing
Fixed cost ₹175.67 · fragrance is the only variable
Component Basis ₹ per candle
Wax 135g at ₹507.40/kg 68.50
Jar Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid, ₹1,888 per 20 94.40
Wick Eco Thick (C2), ₹944 per 100 9.44
Wick sticker ₹100 per sheet of 40 2.50
Care sticker ₹413 per 500 0.83
Fixed subtotal Same for every scent 175.67
+ Citrus Lemon 15g at ₹3.00/g 220.67
+ British Rose 15g at ₹3.42/g 227.00
+ Sandalwood 15g at ₹5.03/g 251.07
+ Vanilla Bean 15g at ₹7.90/g 294.17
Average across the range 25 candles of each 248.23

Read the spread before the average. The dearest scent costs ₹73.50 more to make than the cheapest — Vanilla Bean at ₹294.17 against Citrus Lemon at ₹220.67, a 33% gap on the same candle in the same jar. Price all four at one number and you are either overpricing the lemon or running the vanilla at a third less margin — and you will not notice until vanilla is the bestseller.

This is a material cost, not a cost of goods sold: it excludes outer packaging, labels, your time, electricity, breakage, gateway fees, shipping and returns. It is an honest floor built from invoices, rebuildable the day a jar price changes. Apply whatever multiple you settle on to ₹248.23, not to a guess. Method: how to price candles in India in 2026. Whether the margins add up: is candle making actually profitable.

Registration and invoicing, in one paragraph
Ask for your GST invoice in your registered business name at the time you place the order, not after it ships — supplying the legal name and GSTIN up front is far easier than getting an invoice reissued, and it is the difference between an expense you can account for cleanly and one you cannot. CSI issues GST invoices; send the details on WhatsApp with your order. Whether you must register at all, your turnover threshold, sole proprietorship against LLP, and how input credit applies to you all vary by state and turnover — confirm the specifics with a practising accountant, not with a supplier or a blog post. Ask every supplier what invoice they can issue before your first order, not your fifth.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The commercially convenient advice would be one large first order. We have split ₹37,993.22 across three instead, with a ₹15,807.82 deferral list in the middle, because a maker who buys a melter before choosing a wax usually stops buying anything within six months.

Every price is taken from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, which always takes precedence. Totals are the arithmetic sum of listed variant prices, tax and shipping excluded; out-of-stock variants are excluded, which is why the wick line specifies Eco Thick (C2) in a pack of 20 rather than 10. The 10% and 13% figures are the wax manufacturers' stated formulation ceilings — formulation limits, not regulatory ones.

It covers wax, jars, wicks, fragrance, care stickers and ₹1,239 of tools; it excludes outer packaging, labels, branding, shipping and registration. You never need the full amount on day one.
Can I skip the test month and go straight to production?
You can, but understand the bet: 100 candles in a jar you have not wick-tested, in scents you have never smelled at day 21. Soy needs 14 to 21 days of cure before it smells the way your customer will experience it. The test month is ₹4,141.82 — about 11% of the plan.
How many fragrances should I launch with?
Four. One jar family, one wax, one wick size, four scents, 25 candles each. Widening to eight scents, three jar families, two waxes and six dyes costs ₹6,384.76 more for the same 100 candles, and eight scents at twelve units each is too thin to photograph, stock or read. Add the fifth in month six, from evidence.
Do I need a GST number to buy candle making supplies?
You can buy without one. What changes is the invoice: to receive a GST invoice in your registered business name you must supply that name and your GSTIN when you order, which is far easier than having one reissued. CSI issues GST invoices on request. Whether you must register, and what it means for input credit in your state, is a question for a practising accountant.
Should I buy a wax melter in my first month?
No. The Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360 is a good machine, but the test month melts 945g in total — a quantity a double boiler handles. Buying it in month one spends 57% of your test budget on throughput you do not have. It earns its place in month three, at 13.5kg.
When should I place my first order if I want to sell for a specific date?
Subtract ninety days. Launch equals production pour plus 21 days of cure plus about a week of dispatch, and the production pour is itself 55 to 60 days after order one. A brand ordering its test kit on 10 September 2026 ships around 5–10 December. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November, missed by a month unless you skip the confirmation batch and cure for 14 days rather than 21.
