Hard Wax vs Soft Wax for Wax Melts
Share
How much fragrance in wax melts? Several CSI oils state 10–15% for melts; test at 10%.
Hard or soft wax for melts? In between — firm enough to release and ship.
Does CSI sell a melt wax? No dedicated one; several waxes in the range work.
Soft waxes melt easily and throw well but stick and sweat; hard waxes release and ship well but can throw less. Most good melts sit in the middle.

Finding the middle: a firmness ladder for melts that ship
Nobody sells a melt at the extremes for long. Too soft, and it clings to the clamshell and sweats in a parcel. Too hard, and customers find it weak. The useful question is how to move a wax towards the middle in measured steps, and how to tell when you have arrived.
Start soft, add firmness in steps
Begin with a soft, high-load base such as Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, which states a maximum of 13% of wax weight. Make three batches with microcrystalline at 0%, 2% and 4%: in each kilogram of wax, nothing, 20 g and 40 g of micro. That stays inside the micro page's stated 1–5% range for hardening. Keep the oil and its load identical in all three.
Alternatively, blend the soft soy with a firmer one. Mixing Chunks with Soy Pillar Wax at, say, three parts to one and then one to one keeps the melt all-soy while firming it. Soy Pillar Wax publishes no melt point or load, so treat the blend as untested until your own ladder says otherwise.
The pop test
After the melts have rested, press each cavity of the clamshell from behind. A melt at the right firmness pops out whole and leaves the plastic clean. A soft one smears, leaves a film or breaks at the corners. A very hard one may crack as it pops.
The parcel test
Seal one clamshell from each step in the packaging you ship in and post it to a friend in another city, or leave it for a week in a closed car. When it comes back, look for oil on the plastic, dented corners and melts fused to the lid. Indian summers routinely reach 40–45°C in the north and west between April and June, and from June to September parcels travel through monsoon humidity. The step that survives both is your recipe.
