How Much Fragrance Oil Do I Need for 500 Candles?

8 kg, and the three numbers behind it

The formula is short: oil (kg) = candles × finished candle weight (g) × load ÷ 100,000, with the load written as a whole number. For 500 candles of 200g at 8%: 500 × 200 × 8 ÷ 100,000 = 8 kg. Each candle holds 16g of oil and 184g of wax, so the same run also needs 92 kg of wax — worked through in how much wax for 500 candles.

At 500 candles the oil line costs roughly as much as the wax line while weighing less than a tenth as much. At 8%, 92 kg of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo is ₹46,680.80; 8 kg of Lavender at ₹5,221 a kilo is ₹41,768. Lavender costs about ten times as much per gram as that wax, so a 1g error per candle on oil costs as much as a 10g error on wax. That is why this page works in grams until the very last step.

The size × load matrix at 500 candles

Here is every common candle size at the three loads that matter for CSI's soy waxes: 8% (a sound starting point on any of them), 10% (the stated ceiling on CSI 464 and the recommended figure on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and 13% (the stated ceiling on Chunks and CSI 468). The last column shows how many 1 kg bottles a single-scent run would need at 8%, rounded up.

Two patterns are worth memorising. Down any column, oil scales in a straight line with candle size: 500 × 100g candles need exactly half the oil of 500 × 200g. Across any row, the step from 8% to 10% adds a quarter to the oil order, and the step to 13% adds five-eighths. On 500 × 200g candles that is 8 → 10 → 13 kg. By contrast the wax only falls from 92 to 90 to 87 kg. Load is a small wax decision and a large oil decision.

Your wax sets the ceiling

The load you plan for 500 candles is not a matter of taste. It is bounded by what the wax's product page states and then chosen inside that bound by a cured burn test. The table shows, for 500 × 200g candles, the highest load each CSI soy wax lets you plan, the oil and wax that implies, and what the extra oil costs over 8% at Lavender's 1 kg price of ₹5,221.

The "highest load to plan" is a ceiling, not a target. A full cure and a correctly sized wick often do more for throw than the last few points of load, and the extra ₹20.88 to ₹52.21 per candle only earns its place if a cured, side-by-side burn shows the difference. Splitting 500 candles across scents

Very few 500-candle runs are one fragrance. The practical question is how many scents, and how the grams fall when you divide. Because oil is sold in 1 kg, 500 g, 100 g, 50 g and 15 g bottles, some splits land neatly on whole kilos and some leave awkward remainders. The table divides 500 × 200g candles at 8% evenly into two to eight scents and prices each at Lavender's listed ladder, simply to make the splits comparable.

Three conclusions. First, two, four and eight scents divide cleanly, because 8 kg splits into whole kilos. Second, three, five and six scents leave remainders, and the cheap way to cover them is a 500 g or 100 g bottle, not another kilo: at six scents, rounding every scent up to 2 kg costs ₹19,986 more and leaves 4 kg on the shelf. Third, the extra cost of an exact split is small — the listed totals above sit within ₹1,100 of each other — so choose the number of scents on what sells, not on what divides.

An even split is rarely right, though. In practice one or two scents sell faster, so weight the split to your sales history — or, for a new range, to a sensible guess you revisit after the first 100 candles sell. Rounding to bottles, not to kilos

Here is a costed four-scent split for 500 × 200g candles at 8%: Lavender takes 35% of the run (175 candles), Sandalwood and Apple Cinnamon 25% each (125), and Fresh Strawberries 15% (75). For each scent, the grams needed are matched to the cheapest combination of listed bottles that covers them, and compared with simply rounding up to whole kilos.

Rounding to kilos looks tidy and costs ₹3,765.80 more at 8% — a kilo of oil that is not in any candle. At 10% the gap is ₹9,256.20 and 2 kg. The part-bottles are not wasted if a second run follows quickly, but for a one-off 500-candle order, a spare 800 g of a scent that only took 15% of the run is a slow-moving stock problem. Notice too that Lavender costs slightly more per gram in 100 g bottles (₹5.40) than in 1 kg (₹5.221), yet the three 100 g top-ups still beat a third kilo. On Apple Cinnamon and Sandalwood the per-gram price is flat from 100 g to 1 kg, so exact top-ups cost nothing extra at all.

The oil order for 500 candles, step by step

Everything above collapses into a short routine you can run for any 500-candle plan. It replaces the most common ordering method in small candle businesses — "two kilos of each, that should do".

Timing depends on why the 500 candles exist. A year-round retail run can be poured in weekly batches as sales come in, so the oil can arrive in two drops.
