What "not cheap" should mean for raw materials

Most founders who say they don't want cheap materials mean something specific: they don't want a candle that tunnels, sweats, soots, smells of nothing after a week, or cracks its jar. None of those failures is fixed by paying the highest price in every category. They are fixed by materials whose behaviour is stated, whose paperwork is available, and whose performance you have tested in your own vessel. That gives a working definition you can apply to any supplier's catalogue, including ours.

Notice what is not in that table: marketing adjectives. Product pages everywhere — ours included — describe materials in flattering terms. A premium brand treats descriptive claims as claims to confirm, relies on stated numbers and documents, and lets its own burn tests decide. The premium stack, costed per candle

We start with a competent standard candle — not a cheap one — in the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid, whose page states a 150g fill, a 7 cm outer diameter and hot-pour safety up to 85°C. Then we change one layer per row. The vessel stays fixed so the other upgrades are visible; vessels get their own section below.

Now read the step costs as shares of the ₹133.26 upgrade: fragrance 51% (₹67.97), wooden wick 24% (₹31.86), wax 12% (₹15.97 net, after the higher load reduces the wax weight), higher load 7% (₹9.20 of extra oil) and wrap 6%. In the finished premium candle, the oil is the largest single line at ₹113.99 (33%), the jar next at ₹94.40 (27%), then wax at ₹86 (25%). A founder who wants the most perceptible premium for the money should protect the oil and the vessel first.

Layer by layer: the professional picks

Each card shows the listed packs, the unit price and what the product page actually states. Where a page states nothing on a point that matters, the card says so — a gap in a spec is a reason to test, not a reason to assume.

Two buying rules come out of that table. First, trial before the kilo: five of these oils list a 15g bottle, which is enough to smell and shortlist; Tobacco Vanilla and Smoked Rose Royale start at 100g, so a shortlist that includes them costs more to build. Second, don't assume the kilo is cheaper: on White Royal Oud ten 100gm bottles list at ₹3 less than the kilo, and on Smoked Rose Royale at ₹9 less. Statement candles: 500–700g vessels

Most premium ranges include one large statement candle. Three CSI vessels state a fill weight large enough: the Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid (fill capacity approximately 500–700g in two sizes, about 10 cm diameter, safe for hot pour up to 85°C), and the Reusable Premium Glass Clip Top container (wax fill 550g, 11 × 11 × 10 cm). The table costs each with CSI 468 at 10%, Neroli Signature Grade and one wooden wick; a wide vessel may need two, which adds ₹43.80 (a second wick and sticker). Wick count is a burn-test decision, not something any of these pages states.

Two conclusions for pricing a range. Per 100g of candle, the statement sizes are cheaper to make than the 150g signature — ₹175–₹185 against ₹231 — because the vessel is spread over more wax. But the oil share climbs past 40%, so an expensive oil hits a large candle hardest: swapping Neroli Signature Grade for Santal Noir adds ₹22.82 to the 150g candle and ₹106.47 to the 700g one. The documents a premium brand holds

Documentation is where professional sourcing is most visibly different from buying whatever is cheapest. It is not glamorous, and it will not make a candle smell better, but it is what lets you answer a stockist's questions, keep a recipe identical across batches, and trace a problem when one appears. The table is a practical file list; what CSI provides is stated plainly, and nothing here is a claim of certification.
