My Candle Brand Has Grown From 100 to 1,000 Candles a Month — How Should My Raw Material Purchasing Change?

What changes at 10× volume, and what doesn't

The quantities scale exactly. A 200g candle at 8% is 184g of wax and 16g of oil, whether you make a hundred or a thousand. What does not scale neatly is everything around the quantities: how often you order, how much sits on your shelves, what you melt in, and who you talk to. The table sets the two stages side by side for a brand pouring 200g container candles in one jar, with a 3% planning allowance on wax and oil.

Why 10× volume only saves ₹2.89 a candle at listed prices

Here is the arithmetic for one 200g candle, costed at the packs a well-run brand uses at each stage. At 100 a month: CSI 464 from 5 kg bags, five scents from 100g bottles, Eco C2 wicks from a 100-pack, Salsa jars from a 100-pack, wick stickers and a 500-label care roll. At 1,000 a month: the same wax from 10 kg bags, the same scents from 1 kg bottles, a 1,000-wick pack, the same jars, and the 1,000-label roll.

That ₹2.89 is the honest listed-price answer if you were already buying sensibly at 100 a month. Two lines do all the work: oil, where the 1 kg bottle is cheaper per gram on four of the five scents, and a care label that is a different size anyway. Wax, wicks and jars do not move at all, and on one CSI oil — Blue Ocean — the kilo is listed at ₹4.956 a gram against ₹4.95 in 100g, fractionally dearer. Cut SKUs before you multiply them

A kilo of oil covers 62 candles at 16g each. That single number decides whether a scent can be bought efficiently at 1,000 a month. Spread 1,000 candles over 8 scents and each averages 125 candles — two kilos a month, every scent a 1 kg line. Spread them over 20 and each averages 50 — 800g, below a kilo, so every scent is bought in smaller bottles and every scent carries its own partly used stock, its own forecast and its own risk of a leftover bottle in the off season.

The price penalty for a long scent list is smaller than most people assume — British Rose's 500g bottle costs ₹1.89 a candle more than its kilo, Lavender's only ₹0.30. The real costs are elsewhere. Every scent needs a burn-check when a new lot arrives; with three jar styles, twenty scents is sixty test candles. Every scent needs its own forecast, and a forecast of 50 is proportionally far noisier than a forecast of 200. And every slow scent leaves a part-used bottle behind: a 500g bottle opened for a scent that sells 10 candles that month still holds 340g — about 21 candles' worth — when the season turns.

From "reorder when low" to reorder points

A reorder point is the stock level at which you place the next order, set so the new stock arrives before you run out. It needs three numbers: daily usage, the delivery time you have actually observed from order to goods-in, and a safety buffer for a late delivery or a sudden order. CSI does not publish delivery times, so use your own records. In the example below we assume 25 working days a month, 7 days from order to goods-in, and 7 days of safety stock — replace all three with your own numbers.

The 1,000-a-month buying list

Here is what one month looks like in listed production packs, for the five-scent example at 200 candles each. Oils are bought as three kilos and three 100g top-ups per scent to cover 3.2 kg plus the 3% allowance.

Melter, cure shelf and cash

The melter. 184 kg of wax a month does not go through a 1 litre melter in any sensible working day. The Electric Wax Melter (Imported) is listed at ₹21,240 for 10 kg capacity and ₹25,960 for 20 kg; its page states it can melt 10 kg of soy wax in approximately 30 minutes at 100°C. Planning at 50 candles per 10 kg load, a month is 20 loads — roughly one a working day. At 90 per 20 kg load it is 12 loads, about three a week. The cure shelf. With a 21-day cure, about 21/30 of a month's output is always curing — roughly 700 candles at 1,000 a month, against 70 at 100. That is shelf space you have to build before the volume arrives, and it is stock you have paid for and cannot yet sell.

Those figures are illustrative — your cover days, cure and selling terms will differ — but the shape will not. At 100 a month a slow week is a nuisance; at 1,000 it is several lakh rupees of wax, oil and glass waiting on shelves. That is the strongest argument for cutting SKUs and setting reorder points before scaling, and for agreeing a delivery rhythm with your supplier rather than buying everything at once. From checkout to a supplier relationship

The last change is who you deal with and how. A brand at 1,000 a month needs things a checkout cannot give: a recurring order that arrives on a rhythm, a quote for volumes above the listed packs, documentation — MSDS and IFRA paperwork for oils, and GST invoices — for retailers and corporate buyers who ask, and a person to call when a lot looks different.
