Quick answers — read this first
What is the most common soy candle problem? By volume of questions, three: an uneven or rough top, a wick that tunnels instead of reaching the wall, and a scent that reads weak when lit. The first is a cooling problem, the second a wick sizing problem, and the third is usually cure or pool rather than load. All three appear in the tables below with their first fixes.

How do I know if a soy candle problem is cosmetic or a real fault? Ask whether it changes the burn. Frosting, mild wet spots and a slightly rough top are cosmetic — the candle burns and smells exactly as intended. A tunnelling wick, a drowned flame, heavy sooting or a scent that has gone flat are faults. Run one 3-hour burn before you scrap anything: a jar that burns clean and smells right is stock, not scrap.

What temperature should soy wax be poured at? It depends on the grade, and the figures come from the product pages. For Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, melt to about 80–85°C, add fragrance at 80–90°C and pour at 75–80°C. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states a pour temperature of 58–60°C. Getting this one number right closes more rows in the tables below than any other change.

Can I re-melt and re-pour a failed batch of soy candles? Usually yes, and it is far cheaper than scrapping. Fifty jars at the series unit represent ₹11,363.40 of materials; re-melting recovers the wax and the glass but drives off some top notes, so a reworked batch must be re-cured and re-tested from day one. Re-melting does not fix a wick that was the wrong size — that needs new wicks at ₹5.90 each.

The organising idea behind both tables: soy candle faults are created at one of four stages and noticed at a later one, which is why the jar in your hand rarely tells you what to change. Deliberately left out: the depth on each individual fault, which the linked guides carry, and anything specific to Indian summer heat.
Straight answer
My soy candle has gone wrong — how do I find out what happened and what to do about it?
Work in three moves. First, name the symptom precisely, because several soy faults look alike and have opposite fixes: white speckle is frosting and needs nothing, clear patches against the glass are air gaps and need a hotter jar, an even oily film means the wax never bound the dose, and separate droplets mean it let the dose go later. Second, find the stage it was made at — grade, wick and load are chosen before the melt; dose temperature and stir happen in the melt; wet spots, tops and cracks are set in the pour and the cool; colour, scent and burn faults appear in the cure and the burn. Third, change one thing across three identical jars and read them on a fixed schedule. The tables below give twenty-four symptoms with the most likely cause and the first fix for each. The single highest-yield change for a beginner is a thermometer: pour temperature governs adhesion, surface finish, sinkholes and frosting at once, and the grade pages publish the numbers — 75–80°C for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 58–60°C for Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468.

Ten minutes of evidence before you change anything

Most bad batches are diagnosed from memory. Memory is the reason the same fault comes back three batches later.

A soy candle carries almost no evidence about how it was made once it has set. The grade, the grams, the temperatures and the timings exist only in your notes, and if they do not exist there, every conversation about the fault becomes guesswork — including the one you would otherwise have with us on WhatsApp. So before you touch the batch, write down six things. It takes ten minutes and it is the difference between a diagnosis and a hunch.

Write the recipe in grams Grade and pack size, wax weight per jar, fragrance oil weight per jar, and the load as a percentage of wax weight — the convention CSI product pages use. If you measured oil in millilitres or capfuls, write that down honestly, because it is frequently the answer on its own.

Write the three temperatures Melt temperature, the temperature at which the fragrance went in, and the pour temperature. If you do not know them, that is the finding: a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 turns the next batch into data. Add the room temperature and whether a fan or air-conditioner was running.

Write the hardware Jar type, internal diameter across the top in mm, wick type and size, whether the jar was preheated, and how the jars were placed to cool — on a steel table, on wood, on a tray, spaced or touching.

Write the clock Pour date, the day the problem first appeared, and whether it has changed since. A fault present at hour one, a fault that appeared on day four and a fault that only shows after a burn have three different sets of causes, and this single line eliminates two-thirds of the table.

Then burn one jar for three hours before you decide anything. A candle that reaches the wall at a sensible pool depth, does not soot and smells the way you intended is saleable stock with a cosmetic issue, whatever the top looks like. A candle that tunnels, drowns or smells flat is a fault regardless of how good the surface is. Appearance and performance are separate verdicts and makers routinely scrap the wrong batch.

Twelve appearance and structure symptoms

These are the faults you can see with the candle unlit. Half of them are cosmetic, and knowing which half saves batches.

Every row below gives the most likely cause first — not the only cause. Work down the table until you find the row that matches what you can actually see, apply the first fix on three jars, and only move to a second cause if the first fix changes nothing. Treating frosting as a defect and re-melting a good batch. Frosting is soy wax showing its own crystal structure. It does not change how the candle burns, how it smells, how long it lasts or whether it is safe, and no supplier can sell you a natural soy wax that is guaranteed never to frost. Re-melting a frosted batch costs you a working day and some top notes, and the new batch may frost too. The commercial fix is a sentence on your product page and a jar finish that hides it, not a different wax — which is not a convenient thing for a wax supplier to say.

Twelve burn and scent symptoms

Everything in this table is read with the candle lit, on a schedule, in a closed room. Nothing here can be judged by sniffing a cold jar.

Before using this table, make the reading valid. Cure the candle — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks, and standard practice for soy container candles is 14 to 21 days by fragrance family. Burn for three hours in a closed room with the fan off. Trim the wick to about 5–6 mm before lighting. A weak or uneven reading taken at day two, under a ceiling fan, on an untrimmed wick, is not a result.

Six of those twelve rows are answered by the wick, which is why a wick ladder is the single most productive test in soy candle making and also the cheapest: Eco Candle Wicks are ₹5.90 each for Thin C1 and ₹9.44 each for Thick C2, so three jars of ladder cost under ₹30.00 in wicks. CSI does not publish a wick size for each jar diameter — that table does not exist on the product pages, and inventing one here would be worse than useless. Two practical notes on that table. First, Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 works more than twenty degrees below the soy grades, so a habit built on one grade will produce faults on the other — if you run both, write the pour temperature on the pack. Second, Soy Pillar Wax is sold for pillars, moulds and designer candles, and using it in a jar is a common cause of the pull-away row above; it is not a defect in the wax, it is the wrong wax for the format (choosing the right wax).

Change one thing: the rule that makes this whole page work

Three changes in one batch means three new suspects and no answers, at three times the price.

The tables give you a first fix per row. The temptation, when a batch of fifty has gone wrong, is to apply four fixes at once so the next batch is definitely right. It will not be definitely right: it will be different, and you will have no idea which of the four changes mattered, which means you will carry all four costs forever. Change one thing across three identical jars, hold everything else rigid — the same pot of wax, the same jar, the same wick, the same shelf, the same scoring days — and read them on a fixed schedule. Three jars at the series unit cost ₹681.80.

Buying a more expensive wax as the first response to a fault. It is the move suppliers benefit from and the one that teaches you least. A new grade brings its own pour window, its own crystal behaviour and usually a different wick size, so the next batch differs in three ways at once and any improvement is unattributable. Worse, most of the twenty-four rows above are not wax problems at all — they are temperature, wick and cure problems that will follow you to whatever grade you buy next. Settle the process on the wax you already have, then change grade deliberately if the process is clean and the result still is not right.

Rework, sell or scrap: the decision and its arithmetic

Every failed batch is a commercial decision wearing a technical costume.

Take fifty jars at the series unit — 200 g of CSI 464, 16 g of British Rose Fragrance Oil at 8% of wax weight, an Eco C1 wick and a white matte jar. That is ₹227.27 per candle and ₹11,363.40 for the batch, before your time, your packaging and the season you are pouring for. Knowing that figure before you decide is what keeps the decision honest in both directions: it stops panic scrapping, and it stops shipping a jar you would return.

Two of those rows deserve a caveat. Re-melting is not free: heating a dosed wax a second time drives off part of the lighter fragrance, so a reworked batch needs a fresh cure and a fresh burn test rather than the old one. And a surface repair fixes appearance only — if the wick was wrong, a beautiful top just means a beautiful candle that tunnels. Repair in the order the fault was created, which is the order the diagram at the top of this page sets out.

Nine of the twenty-four symptoms above trace back to a temperature nobody measured. This is the tool that turns "I poured it when it looked cloudy" into "I poured at 78°C", which is the difference between a repeatable recipe and a monthly surprise. Use it three times per batch: at the melt, at the moment the fragrance goes in, and at the pour. Write all three numbers on the batch sheet. If you run more than one grade, note that Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 pours at 58–60°C while Luxury Soy Wax Chunks pours at 75–80°C — a difference no amount of experience will let you judge by eye.

Isopropyl Alcohol Spray at ₹383.00 for 150 ML removes the dust and residue film that causes wet spots and wick-sticker failures, and it is also what cleans recovered glass when you scrap a batch. Frequently asked questions

Why does my soy candle look bad even though I followed the instructions?
Because the instructions on a pack cannot describe your room. Cooling speed, draught, jar wall thickness and the temperature of the surface you set the jars on all change how soy crystallises, and those four things are yours, not the wax's. Start by measuring the three temperatures — melt, dose and pour — against the figures on your grade's page, then cool the batch spaced out on wood, away from fans, for at least six hours.
Do I need to throw away a frosted or wet-spotted candle?
No. Both are cosmetic. Frosting is soy showing its own crystal form; wet spots are air gaps between wax and glass, not moisture, and neither changes how the candle burns or smells. The commercial answer is a line on your listing explaining that natural soy does this, and a jar finish — frosted, matte or coloured — that makes it invisible. Scrapping a cosmetically imperfect batch of fifty throws away about ₹11,363.40 of materials for no functional reason.
What is the first thing to check when a soy candle burns badly?
The wick, then the burn habit, then the jar — in that order, and before anything about the wax. Six of the twelve burn rows above are wick rows. Trim to 5–6 mm, burn for three hours in a still room, and measure whether the pool reaches the wall. How long should I wait before deciding a soy candle batch has failed?
At least 14 days for anything to do with scent, and 72 hours for anything to do with the surface. Surfaces settle faster: a top that is still changing at 72 hours is telling you about cooling, not about cure.
Can the same fault have more than one cause?

An oily surface can be load, dose temperature, the oil or the shelf. Apply the first fix on three jars, hold everything else constant, and only move to the second cause if nothing changed.
