Why Does My Soy Candle Have Sinkholes?

How do I fix a sinkhole that has already formed? Pierce two or three relief holes beside the wick while the top is still soft, then top up with 20 g of wax held back from the same melt — ₹11.98 of Chunks, no extra material cost. Reheat the reserve to the same pour temperature so it fuses instead of leaving a ring.
Does pouring cooler stop sinkholes? It reduces them, it does not remove them. The Chunks page gives a pour temperature you can state as 75–80°C; Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 pours at 58–60°C. Cooling speed matters as much: a jar under a fan or an air conditioner crusts early and hides a bigger cavity.
Is a sinkhole a safety problem? Filled properly, no — it is cosmetic. Left as an open cavity that runs down beside the wick, the first burn drops into the hole early and behaves unpredictably. General practice is to fill it before the candle is sold, which is why the top-up pour exists.
What a sinkhole actually is — and where the missing wax went
Weigh a finished candle and the maths is boring: 200 g of wax poured, 200 g of wax in the jar. Look at it and the maths seems wrong — there is a crater beside the wick, or a hollow you only find when the skewer drops through a crust that looked perfect. Both are the same event. Wax expands when it melts and contracts when it sets, and a container candle has to absorb that contraction somewhere inside a rigid glass jar.
The size is easy to picture. Take an illustrative jar with a 70 mm inside diameter — a common gifting size, though CSI does not publish diameters for its jars, so measure yours with a ruler across the mouth. That surface is 38.48 cm². Every 1 mm the level drops is about 3.85 cm³ of volume, roughly three-quarters of a teaspoon. A 3 mm drop is 11.55 cm³. A hidden cavity 20 mm across and 15 mm deep is about 4.71 cm³. None of that is lost material; it is the same wax, packed tighter.
What decides whether you see an even drop or a crater is the order in which the jar freezes. Glass conducts heat out through the walls, and the open top loses heat to the room, so the shell forms at the edges and the surface first. The centre — and especially the column of wax around the wick and its metal tab — stays liquid longest. Once a crust closes over the top, the shrinking core has no way of drawing wax down to feed itself, and the deficit opens up as a void underneath. That is the whole mechanism, and it applies to Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 and Eco Soy CSI 400 alike.

The four levers that decide how big the void is
Every case of sinkholes traces back to one or more of four things, and all four are set on your bench rather than in the wax. Ranked by how much they change the outcome in an Indian workroom:

The ranking matters because makers usually start at number four. A crater appears, the wax gets blamed, and a kilogram of something dearer goes into the basket. Changing from Chunks to CSI 468 adds ₹10.20 to every 200 g candle and changes nothing at all if the jar is still cooling under a ceiling fan. Fix the fan first: it is free.
Temperature is the lever with the clearest published numbers. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks you to melt to approximately 80–85°C, add dye at full melt, add fragrance at 80–90°C with a slow two-minute stir, and pour at a temperature you can treat as 75–80°C. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 publishes a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C — a genuinely different animal, and the reason coconut-soy blends often behave better in a hot Indian room. The Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. Eco Soy CSI 400 asks for fragrance at 85°C, a gentle two-minute stir and a direct pour, and states that no additives are needed. Where a page does not publish a figure, this guide says so rather than filling the gap.
Find the void before your customer does
A hidden cavity is not detectable by eye, which is why any batch destined for sale needs a check that does not rely on eyes. Four cost nothing and take seconds per jar.

The skewer probe is the only one that earns its place in a production routine, because it doubles as the relief hole. Do it at 90 minutes and you are inspecting and fixing in the same movement. Do it at 24 hours and you are drilling a hole in a set candle that then needs a much larger repair. The tool matters less than the timing: Bamboo Stirring Sticks come five for ₹118.00, and the Premium Candle Wicking Needle at ₹472.00 is the version that will not tear a soft top.
Relief holes and the top-up pour, step by step
This is the method the rest of the page exists to support. It assumes the series costing unit: 200 g of wax plus 16 g of fragrance oil at 8% of wax weight, 216 g poured, which at Chunks and Eucalyptus Spearmint Fragrance Oil prices is ₹119.80 of wax and ₹49.09 of oil, plus an Eco Candle Wicks C1 wick at ₹5.90 — ₹174.79 a candle before the jar.
Two details decide whether this looks professional or looks like a repair. The first is temperature: a top-up that is much hotter than the candle underneath melts a shallow dish into the old surface and leaves a visible tide mark; one that is much cooler sits as a separate disc. The second is source: reserve wax from the same melt carries the same oil at the same load. Wax from a fresh melt, even of the same grade, will have had a different heat history, and on a coloured or heavily scented batch that difference shows.
What sinkholes actually cost, and what the fix costs
Take the festive run above: 50 candles, 200 g each, at the series unit of ₹174.79. Materials are ₹8,739.40; add the jar and you are at ₹13,459.40. Now compare four routes through the same batch.

The number that surprises people is the third row. Holding 20 g back costs nothing in material, because the candle still ends up with 200 g in it. What it costs is a second visit to every jar — about half a minute each, plus the reheat. Against ₹1,076.75 for four scrapped candles, that is an easy trade at any batch size above about a dozen.
One honest note on bulk pricing while you are planning a 10 kg run. Chunks are ₹599.00 per kilogram in the 1 kg pack and ₹599.90 per kilogram in the 10 kg pack, so buying ten single kilograms costs ₹5,990.00 against ₹5,999.00 for the large pack — the small packs are marginally cheaper per kilogram. Buy the 10 kg pack for the convenience and the single handling, not because it saves money at this size. Bulk pricing beyond the published packs is a WhatsApp conversation.
Jars, depth and the shapes that hide voids
CSI does not publish inside diameters or fill depths for its containers, so every number in this section is something you measure once with a ruler and write on a card. What matters is the ratio between depth and width, and whether the jar has a shoulder.

Two illustrative numbers to hold the geometry in your head. Pour the same 1 mm shortfall into a 60 mm jar and you lose 2.83 cm³ of volume; in an 85 mm jar the same 1 mm is 5.67 cm³, because surface area goes up with the square of the radius. Wide jars therefore look worse for the same amount of shrinkage, and they are also the jars where a deep single pour is most tempting. That is not a reason to avoid them; it is a reason to pour them in two stages from the start.
One grade note. Soy Pillar Wax at ₹600.00 a kilogram is formulated for moulds and designer candles and is described on its page as releasing cleanly from moulds — the opposite of what a jar wants. Poured into glass it will pull away and leave voids at the wall that no top-up can fix. If a jar batch is full of gaps at the glass rather than at the wick, check which wax went into it before changing anything else.
Indian rooms: 40°C afternoons, air conditioning and the monsoon
Most sinkhole advice written elsewhere assumes a 20–22°C workroom. Very little Indian candle making happens in one. The practical question is not what the ideal ambient is, but how to keep cooling even when the ambient is 38°C in the afternoon and 26°C by midnight.
The 40°C summer problem
In Delhi, Ahmedabad or Nagpur in May, a jar poured at 3 pm may not set for hours, and the shrinkage happens slowly and evenly. That part is good: slow, even cooling is exactly what suppresses craters. The trouble starts when a maker gets impatient, or when the room drops ten degrees after sunset and a candle that was half set gets a sudden cold surface. Pour early in the day, let the tray sit where the temperature will change least, and accept a longer wait before the top-up — three hours rather than ninety minutes is reasonable in a very hot room.
Air conditioning and ceiling fans
An air-conditioned room is the most reliable sinkhole factory in Indian candle making, not because it is cold but because the air moves. A ceiling fan at low speed over a curing tray does the same thing. If you must work in an air-conditioned room, pour in it, then move the tray to a still corner away from the vent, and put a loose cover over the jars so the surface does not lose heat faster than the body.
Monsoon
Mumbai, Kochi and Kolkata in July bring a different problem: the ambient is not cold, but everything is damp and the cooling is slow and erratic. Sinkholes are less of a monsoon defect than surface faults are, but two habits help — store wax sealed, which the Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page recommends as part of its 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage away from sunlight and moisture, and give the reserve wax a lid so condensation does not collect in the pitcher between the two pours.
Couriers and the journey
A candle that left your bench flat can arrive dished. Courier vans in an Indian summer routinely run far hotter than any room, and a candle that softens in transit and re-sets in a warehouse will re-shrink — usually as a shallow dip rather than a cavity. There is no fix at the receiving end except to let it settle. There is a fix at your end: cure fully before dispatch, so the candle that travels is a finished one, not one that is still moving.
A festive run, planned backwards from 8 November 2026
Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026. A soy container candle wants 14–21 days of cure as standard practice, and the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page itself asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing. Add courier time across India and a buffer for the top-up and the second set, and mid-October is the honest last date for a festive pour.

If you are testing the method before committing to the run, the smallest honest trial is a kilogram of wax, a 50 gm bottle of oil, a 20-pack of wicks and a thermometer: ₹1,283.40. That is enough for five 200 g candles, two of which you should deliberately pour badly — one straight from the melter at full heat, one under a fan — so you can see the defect you are learning to prevent.
