Quick answers — read this first
Why is my candle strong in the jar and weak once lit? Because the jar is an easier test. A 200 g fill leaves about 80 ml of trapped air under the lid, while a 10 × 10 ft bedroom holds about 26.9 m³ — roughly 340,000 times as much. Add an oil weighted towards light top notes and a melt pool that is short of the wall, and the gap becomes obvious.

Does the flame destroy the fragrance oil? No. Flashpoint is a transport and storage figure — 143°C for Blue Ocean, 203°C for Sandalwood — and every working temperature in candle making sits below it. What changes when a candle burns is which fractions leave first, not how much fragrance is present.

Which oils are most likely to do this? Ones whose published note pyramid is almost entirely top notes. Citrus Lemon is zesty lemon and lime through to a mandarin finish; Blue Ocean opens on sea salt and ozone. Oils with amber, musk, oud, sandalwood or vanilla in the base — Dark Vanilla, Autumn — hold a room for longer.

What is the cheapest fix? Anchoring. At 8% in a 200 g jar, 12 g of Citrus Lemon with 4 g of Dark Vanilla costs ₹64.57 of oil against ₹45.31 for lemon alone. If the pool is short of the wall at three hours, fix the wick first — C1 is ₹5.90 and C2 is ₹9.44 each at the 100-wick packs.

Why does my soy candle smell strong cold but weak when it is burning?
Because you are comparing two tests with completely different rules, and usually because the oil is weighted towards the notes that win the easy one. Cold throw is read from a cool solid surface into roughly 80 ml of air trapped under a lid, sampled in two seconds by a nose arriving from outside. Hot throw has to fill about 26.9 m³ of bedroom — around 340,000 times as much air — from a liquid pool that may be well short of the jar wall, sampled by a nose that has been in the room for an hour. Three things widen that gap. One, note structure: an oil whose published pyramid is almost all citrus, ozone or fresh fruit front-loads its performance and thins after the first half hour, while oils with amber, musk, oud, sandalwood or vanilla in the base hold. Two, pool size: at three hours a 50 mm pool in a 65 mm jar is 19.63 cm² of a possible 33.18 cm², about 59% of the surface you designed. Three, cure: an uncovered cure in a heat-cycling Indian room sells your top notes to the room before the customer ever lights the jar. What is not happening is the fragrance burning off — flashpoints of 143°C to 203°C sit far above every working temperature in candle making. Cold and hot are two different tests, and the jar wins one of them

Nothing has gone wrong with your candle. You have run two tests with wildly different rules and compared the scores.

Cold throw is evaporation from a cool solid surface into a small, still, enclosed volume of air, sampled from about five centimetres away by a nose that has just arrived. Hot throw is evaporation from a warm liquid pool into an entire room, sampled by a nose that has been sitting in that room for an hour. Those are not two readings of the same property. They are two different experiments, and the jar has every structural advantage in the first one.

That is why the mismatch is so common in soy and why it is not, by itself, evidence of a fault. A candle that reads gorgeous through the lid and quiet across a living room may be perfectly made and simply mismatched to the room, the oil or the wick. The useful question is not "why is my candle weak" — it is "which of these three specific things is producing the gap".

Read the last row twice, because it is the mechanism the rest of this page unpacks. The molecules that evaporate readily at 28°C are the small, light ones — citrus, aquatic, green, fresh-fruit notes. They are also the ones that leave a warm pool fastest and are gone soonest. The heavier woods, resins, ambers and vanillas barely register through a lid, then carry a room for hours once the pool is open. An oil weighted towards the first group is built to win the cold test and lose the hot one.

The headspace illusion: the arithmetic of a lidded jar

Every jar smells strong with the lid off. That is a fact about jars, not about your fragrance.

Put numbers on it. A 200 g fill in a typical 65 mm gifting jar leaves roughly 80 ml of air under the lid — about a third of a small teacup. A 10 × 10 ft bedroom with a 9.5 ft ceiling holds about 26.9 m³, which is roughly 340,000 times as much air. Those figures are illustrative — jars and rooms vary — but the order of magnitude does not. Scent that has been accumulating in that trapped 80 ml for days arrives at your nose all at once when you lift the lid. The same quantity of fragrance released into a bedroom is spread across a volume hundreds of thousands of times bigger, and you are standing in it rather than leaning over it.

This is also why the cold sniff feels so much more reliable than it is. It is instant, it is repeatable, it costs nothing, and it flatters every oil you own. Retail knows this: a stall customer picks up a jar, lifts the lid and buys on that two-second reading. It is a real and valuable property — cold throw sells candles — but it predicts hot throw about as well as a car's paint predicts its mileage.

Judging a fragrance by opening the lid and inhaling at the jar. Held 5 cm from the surface, with days of accumulated vapour released in one breath, every oil in the catalogue reads strong. If you are choosing between two oils for how they will perform lit, the lid test will actively mislead you — it over-rewards the lightest, most volatile oils, which are exactly the ones most likely to disappoint once the pool opens. Judge lit candles lit, at three hours, in the room you expect the customer to use.

Which oils read loud cold and thin hot

You can predict most of this from the note pyramid the product page already prints.

CSI oil pages publish top, heart and base notes. That structure is not marketing language — it is a description of how quickly the different fractions leave. Top notes are the light, fast molecules; base notes are the heavy, slow ones. An oil described entirely in bright citrus, ozone and fresh-fruit terms is weighted towards the fast fractions. An oil with sandalwood, amber, musk, oud or vanilla in its base has weight that survives a three-hour burn.

The table below reads six CSI oils this way. It is a reading of published note pyramids and stated strengths, not a measurement — CSI does not publish comparative cold-versus-hot test data, and we are not going to invent any. Use it to form an expectation, then test in your own jar.

Two honest caveats. First, a wide gap is not a defect — a bright citrus candle that reads glorious in the box and light in the room is doing exactly what a bright citrus oil does, and there is a market for it. Second, price does not predict this at all: Citrus Lemon is the cheapest oil in the table at ₹45.31 a jar and Dark Vanilla the dearest at ₹122.34, and the difference between them is composition, not quality.

Cure quietly moves the balance between the two readings

An uncovered cure sells your top notes to the room for free, weeks before the customer lights anything.

Every hour a candle spends open to the air, the lightest fractions leave first — the same molecules that were producing the loud cold reading. Cure a batch lids-off on an open shelf and you are slowly running the cold throw down while the hot throw is still developing. Cure it lids-on and both are preserved, which is why the instruction appears on wax pages at all. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page sets the floor at 48 hours and names 1–2 weeks as the better window before burn testing; general soy practice runs to 14–21 days, sorted by fragrance family.

Indian storage makes this sharper than it is anywhere temperate. A terrace room in Ahmedabad or Nagpur that reaches 40°C at three in the afternoon and drops to 28°C by night is pumping the jar through a daily heat cycle, and every cycle pushes a little more oil to the surface and out. Makers often notice exactly this shape: the batch smelled enormous the week it was poured, and by the time it went out it read flat both cold and hot. Cure with lids on, at roughly 25–30°C, away from sunlight — a closed steel almirah in an inner room does more for throw than any additive.

There is a second, more hopeful version of the same mechanism. A candle that reads loud cold and thin hot at day 3 is often a different candle at day 14, because the heavier fractions are still distributing through the wax while the light ones settle down. If your batch is under two weeks old, the honest answer is that you do not yet know what it does. Burn one jar, write down the pool width and what you smelled from the door, then repeat with a second jar on day 14 — the same test, the same room, ₹152.69 of materials spent to find out.

SMELL IT TWICE
Take two hot readings from every test jar: one at about 20 minutes, when the pool is small and the fast fractions are at their loudest, and one at 3 hours, when the pool is full and whatever is left is doing the work. A candle that is strong at 20 minutes and faint at 3 hours has a top-note problem. A candle that is faint at both has a pool problem or a cure problem. That single extra reading separates the two most confusable causes on this page.

Heat does not burn your fragrance away

The most repeated explanation for this problem is also the wrong one.

You will read that the flame destroys the fragrance, or that adding oil at 80°C "burns it off", or that a low flashpoint means an oil cannot survive a candle. None of that describes what is happening. Flashpoint is a transport and storage safety figure: the temperature at which vapour above the liquid can be ignited in the presence of an ignition source. It is a property of the bottle on a lorry, not a ceiling on what wax can hold.

The scale makes it obvious. Blue Ocean states a flashpoint of 143°C, British Rose 192°C and Sandalwood 203°C. The CSI wax pages ask you to add fragrance at 80–90°C and pour at 75–80°C, and a burning soy pool sits far below even that. Every working temperature in candle making is beneath every flashpoint in the catalogue. Adding oil cool, to "protect" it, is the far more common way to lose throw — the oil disperses badly and the candle scents unevenly from top to bottom.

What actually happens in the pool is selection, not destruction. A warm liquid releases its lighter fractions faster than its heavier ones, so the mix reaching your nose at twenty minutes is not the mix reaching you at three hours. A top-heavy oil front-loads its performance and then thins out; a base-heavy oil starts quietly and holds. Nothing has been burnt, and nothing is being wasted — the candle is simply presenting its components in order of weight.

Switching to a higher-flashpoint oil to fix weak hot throw. This is a very common purchase and it is based on a misreading. Flashpoint tells you how to ship and store a bottle; it is not a strength rating and it is not a durability rating. Sandalwood's 203°C does not make it stronger in a pool than Blue Ocean's 143°C — the pages describe Sandalwood as moderate to strong and Blue Ocean as strong. Choose on note structure and the stated load, not on flashpoint.

The pool is still the ceiling

An oil can only present the notes that a liquid surface is big enough to release.

Cold throw does not care how well your candle burns, because nothing is burning. Hot throw is limited by the liquid surface, and that surface grows with the square of its width, so a shortfall costs more than it looks. In a 65 mm jar, a pool that has only reached 50 mm at three hours is working from 19.63 cm² of a possible 33.18 cm² — about 59%. Half your evaporating surface is missing, and no oil in the catalogue makes up for that.

This is the cleanest way to tell a genuine oil mismatch from an under-wicked jar. Lay a steel ruler across the candle at the three-hour mark. If the pool is well short of the wall, the wick is the first thing to change, not the fragrance — go one rung up from Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 to Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 each, in three otherwise identical jars. If the pool is at the wall and the candle still fades after the first half hour, you have a genuine top-note-heavy oil, and the fixes in the next section are the ones that apply.

Jar, lid and fill weight decide the gap before the oil does

A 70 g votive and a 200 g jar are not the same product in different sizes. They are different engines.

Start with the lid, because it is the cheapest lever on this page and it only moves one of the two readings. A lid traps volatiles and preserves cold throw for months; an open jar on a shelf slowly vents the very notes that made the customer buy. It does nothing for hot throw at all — by definition the lid is off when the candle is lit. So a lidded jar makes the cold-hot gap look wider, and a lidless one narrows it by making the cold reading worse. Neither has changed the candle.

Jar shape does something similar. A narrow neck over a wide body concentrates vapour under the lid, which flatters the cold sniff, and then restricts the width of the melt pool, which limits the hot throw. Wide-mouth jars do the opposite: an honest cold reading and a pool that can actually reach a useful size. If you are choosing containers for a range that will be sold lit rather than sniffed, the wide mouth is the better commercial shape even though it photographs less prettily.

Then there is size, which is where most disappointment is manufactured. At the same 8% ratio, a 70 g votive carries about 5.6 g of oil and a 200 g jar carries 16 g — nearly three times as much fragrance, a bigger pool and several times the burn time. A votive is an excellent wedding favour, Rakhi add-on or corporate gift-box filler, and a poor choice for scenting a drawing room. Sell it as the first and it delights; sell it as the second and you get a message about weak throw.

The last column is the one worth arguing about with yourself before a festive season. A gifting range built entirely on votives at ₹89.14 a piece looks wonderfully profitable until January, when a proportion of the recipients tell the buyer it was lovely but faint. Four fixes, in the order that costs least

Re-test, anchor, wick, cure. Only the second one involves buying a new oil, and even that is a 50 g decision.

Re-test the candle honestly before changing anythingTake a jar at least 14 days old into a room you have not poured in. Shut the door, switch off the fan and the AC, light it, and leave for ten minutes. Come back and note what you smell from the doorway, then measure the pool. Repeat at three hours. A cold-hot gap that appears in a fan-on, day-3, workshop test is not yet a finding — it is an untested opinion.

What to tell the customer who sniffed it at your stall

The cold-hot gap is not only a formulation problem. It is the single most common gap between what a customer was promised and what they got.

An Indian D2C candle is usually sold in one of three ways: a stall or exhibition where the buyer lifts the lid, a photograph on Instagram where they cannot smell anything at all, or a gifting order where nobody smells it before it is wrapped. Every one of those sells the cold reading. The customer then lights it in a 12 × 14 ft drawing room with a fan running and forms an opinion that has nothing to do with the one that made them buy.

The fix is partly formulation and partly copy. Tell people what the candle is for, and be specific enough that it can be checked. "Strong scent" is a claim that invites disappointment. "Fills a small bedroom in about 20 minutes; use two for a large living room" is a claim a customer can verify and be satisfied by — and it makes the two-candle sale for you rather than against you.

One more piece of honesty that costs nothing: if a customer says the candle smelled stronger in the box than in the room, they are almost certainly right, and now you know why. Explain the pool, suggest a closed door for the first twenty minutes, and ask what size the room was. Most of the time the candle is fine and the room was large — and a maker who can say that clearly, with numbers, sounds more trustworthy than one who insists the fragrance is the strongest available. This page says something less convenient: a wide cold-hot gap is often correct behaviour for a bright oil, the first fix is a free re-test, the second costs a few grams of an oil you may already own, and a candle that genuinely cannot fill a large living room should be sold as a candle for a small one. Cheapest of all, no oil in this catalogue is made stronger by a higher flashpoint, and we would rather say so than sell you one on that basis.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my soy candle smell strong in the jar but weak when it is burning?
Because the two readings are taken under completely different conditions. The unlit jar concentrates days of accumulated scent into roughly 80 ml of trapped air that you sample from a few centimetres away; the burning candle has to fill around 27 m³ of bedroom, from a liquid pool that may be covering only part of the surface. Does the fragrance oil burn off when the candle is lit?
No. Flashpoint — 143°C for Blue Ocean, 192°C for British Rose, 203°C for Sandalwood — is a transport and storage property, not a temperature at which oil is destroyed in wax. The CSI wax pages ask for fragrance to be added at 80–90°C, well below all of those. What changes in a burning candle is which fractions evaporate first, not how much fragrance exists.
Which fragrance oils hold up best once a soy candle is burning?
Oils whose pages describe real weight in the base. Dark Vanilla lists dark amber and warm musk, Autumn lists oak, amber and vanilla, Woody Oud lists warm woods, amber and musk. Bright citrus and aquatic oils are weighted the other way. CSI publishes no comparative cold-versus-hot test data, so treat the note pyramid as an expectation and confirm it with a three-hour burn in your own jar.
Will more fragrance oil close the gap?
Not usefully, and only if you are below your governing load in the first place. The load ceiling is the lower of what the wax page allows — 10% for CSI 464, 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — and what the oil page states, commonly 6–10% for candles. More of a top-heavy oil gives you a louder first twenty minutes and the same quiet third hour, at ₹45.31 or more per jar.
Can I blend two fragrance oils to fix it?
Yes, and it is ordinary practice. Keep the combined weight inside the governing load, mix the oils together before they go into the wax, and treat the result as a new fragrance that needs its own cure and burn test. A 12 g and 4 g split of Citrus Lemon and Dark Vanilla in a 200 g jar is ₹64.57 of oil. Check any vanillin-bearing oil in white wax first — both Dark Vanilla and Roasted Coffee state vanillin in their bases.
Is a strong cold throw and a weak hot throw the same as generally weak throw?
No, and the difference is diagnostic. A candle that reads weak both unlit and lit points at cure, pool or process. A candle that reads loud unlit and thin lit has plenty of fragrance in it and a delivery problem instead — usually note structure, pool size, or a room bigger than one jar can serve. Take two hot readings, at 20 minutes and at 3 hours, and the two cases separate immediately.
