Quick answers — read this first
Can I use essential oils in candles? Yes. CSI's Eco Soy CSI 400 page says to "add your fragrance or essential oils at 85°C (185°F), stir gently for 2 minutes, and pour directly", and the Massage Candle Base page states "around 6-10% by weight" for skin-safe fragrance or essential oil.
How much do I use? The same discipline as any oil: 8% is a sensible start and the maximum is your wax's stated ceiling. On a 200 g candle that is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax; on a 70 g votive, 5.6 g; on a 300 g three-wick, 24 g.
What temperature? The one your wax page states — 85°C for Eco Soy CSI 400, 80–90°C for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks with a 70–80°C pour, 58–60°C pour for Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468. No CSI essential-oil listing publishes a flash point, so do not invent an add temperature from one.

The short answer
Yes, and nothing special is required: an essential oil goes into wax the same way a fragrance oil does — weighed, added at the wax's stated temperature, stirred for two minutes, poured, then cured 14–21 days before you judge it.
The ceiling is the wax's, not the oil's: up to 13% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% on CSI 464, up to 13% on Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468. Eco Soy CSI 400 states no maximum, so hold at 8% until a cured jar has been burned.
Expect to test more, not less: the essential-oil listings publish prices and sizes but no candle load, no flash point and no cure window, so your burn test is doing work the page would otherwise do.
Four waxes, four different windows, and only one of them names essential oils: Eco Soy CSI 400, which states 85°C with a two-minute stir. Note how far apart the ends are — a coconut-soy blend is poured at 58–60°C while soy chunks go in at 80–90°C, so "add the essential oil hot" is not a usable instruction. Read the number off the wax you actually bought.
Can essential oils be used in candles, and what changes when I use them instead of fragrance oil?
Yes. An essential oil dissolves in molten wax and behaves like any other oil phase, and CSI's own Eco Soy CSI 400 page tells you how: "add your fragrance or essential oils at 85°C (185°F), stir gently for 2 minutes, and pour directly". Three things change, all of them practical. The load is still the wax's decision — up to 13% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (8–13%, 10% recommended), up to 10% on CSI 464, up to 13% on CSI 468 — and 8% is the sensible starting point, which is 16 g of oil in a 200 g candle. The documentation is thinner: the five essential oils CSI stocks publish prices and pack sizes, but no candle percentage, no flash point, no cure window and no storage instruction, so the burn test is doing work a fragrance-oil page would otherwise do for you. And the cost is higher — 16 g of lavender essential oil is ₹109.50 against ₹83.54 for the fragrance oil of the same name, which is why the decision belongs in a costing sheet before it belongs in a pot. Nothing else is exotic: weigh, add at the stated temperature, stir the full two minutes, pour, cure 14–21 days, then burn a jar yourself. What you must not do is attach a health, sleep or therapeutic claim to the finished candle — no CSI page makes one, and neither should your label.
One line: yes — weigh 8% of the finished candle, add it at the temperature your wax page states, stir two minutes, cure a fortnight, and sell the scent rather than a benefit.
The cheapest honest experiment in this whole question: Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹399 per kg — the one CSI wax whose page names essential oils — plus 100% Pure Lemon Essential Oil 50 gm at ₹224.20 and Eco Candle Wicks from ₹59 for 10. Two 120 g test jars at 8% need 19.2 g of oil and 220.8 g of wax.
Not on tradition, and not on a blog's opinion. On four sentences printed across the CSI range, and on the fact that wax does not care where an oil came from.
Wax holds oil in solution up to a limit set by its own formulation, and that limit applies to whatever oil you put in — a composed fragrance oil, a single distillate, or a blend. Nothing about a steam-distilled lavender makes it inadmissible in soy; what it lacks is not permission but paperwork. The evidence that CSI treats essential oils as a normal input sits on the base and wax pages rather than on the oil listings: Eco Soy CSI 400 names them in its add instruction, the Massage Candle Base states "Add skin-safe fragrance or essential oil at around 6-10% by weight for massage candles", and two non-candle bases — the Room & Linen Spray Base at 8–15% and the Ultrasonic Diffusion Concentrate Base — do the same. What is genuinely missing, stated plainly. None of the five essential oils CSI lists publishes a candle load, a measured flash point, a cure window, a shelf life or a storage specification — and this guide will not invent any of them. That has one consequence you should plan for: you cannot look up an add temperature for the oil, so you take it from the wax, and you cannot look up a load for the oil, so you take the wax's ceiling and start below it. How much to use, in grams
Percentages are how loads are discussed and grams are how candles are made, so here is the conversion for the four sizes most Indian makers actually sell. This series treats load as a share of the finished candle: a 200 g candle at 8% is 184 g of wax plus 16 g of oil. Several CSI pages phrase their percentage as a share of total wax weight instead — a real difference of a gram or two at this scale, so pick one convention and keep it on the recipe card.

Two decisions hide in that table. Where to start — 8%, for an essential oil for the same reason as for a fragrance oil: high enough to judge, low enough that a failed batch has not eaten the margin. And where to stop, which is not your decision at all but the number printed on your wax page. A 200 g candle holds 16 g of oil at 8% and 26 g at 13%; on lavender essential oil at ₹6.844 per gram that gap is ₹68.44 per candle — real money for a change you have not yet proved improves anything.
Drops are not a unit
A great deal of essential-oil advice is written in drops, and a drop is not a measurement: it varies with the viscosity of the oil, the bottle, the orifice reducer and the temperature of the room. A load is a weight percentage, which means the only tool that gives you a repeatable candle is a scale — CSI lists a candle making weighing scale at ₹354 and a pen thermometer at ₹354, which between them make every number on this page reproducible. Write grams on the card, not drops, and your second batch can match your first.
The over-loading trap, and it bites harder with essential oils. A single distillate often reads quieter than a composed fragrance oil after an hour of burning, and the instinctive fix is to pour more. Past the wax's stated ceiling the surplus does not bind: you get separation in the jar, an oily film sweating to the surface, a wick that struggles because it is drawing oil rather than wax, and a pool that never opens out — a weaker candle that cost more. Heat, and the number nobody publishes
This is where essential oils genuinely need more care than fragrance oils, and the reason is an information gap rather than a chemical drama. No CSI essential-oil listing states a flash point, and across the 107 fragrance-oil pages only 18 publish a measured value at all. So you have no oil-specific temperature to work to — which means you work to the wax's, and you do not heat anything more than the wax page asks you to.

Look at the shape of that table rather than the numbers. Two waxes tell you when to add, four do not, and one names essential oils explicitly. Starting from scratch, that is an argument for Eco Soy CSI 400 — not because the wax is better but because its page answers the question you are about to ask. Already committed to Chunks or CSI 468? Use the add window where one is given, otherwise add at the lower end of the wax's working range, stir the full two minutes and pour at the stated temperature.
A working rule for volatile materials
Essential oils are volatile by definition — that is what makes them smell. The sensible protocol, in the absence of a published flash point, is to hold the wax no hotter than the page requires, add the oil once, stir for the stated two minutes and pour rather than keeping the pot hot while you find your wicks. Either way, a thermometer costs ₹354 and removes the guesswork; melting by feel is how a batch becomes unrepeatable.

Weigh the batch before you melt itTwo 120 g candles at 8% need 19.2 g of essential oil and 220.8 g of wax. Weigh both into separate containers and write the figures down now, while they are facts rather than memories. Weigh the empty jar too — most CSI jars state capacity in millilitres rather than grams, so the only honest way to know what a vessel holds is to fill one and weigh it.

Melt to the wax page's temperature, not past itMelt the wax gently and take it to the temperature your wax states. On Eco Soy CSI 400 that is 85°C for adding, inside a stated 80–90°C window; on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks the stated add window is 80–90°C with a 70–80°C pour. Use a thermometer, not the look of the wax. Have your wicks stuck and centred and your jars warm before the oil goes anywhere near the pot.

Add once, stir two full minutesPour the weighed oil in one go and stir gently and continuously for two minutes by the clock — the Eco Soy CSI 400 instruction is explicit about both the stir and its length. Two minutes feels long. It is the difference between fragrance dissolved through the wax and fragrance dispersed in it, and dispersed oil is what later separates and sweats. Scrape the sides of the pot as you go.

Pour at the stated pour temperature, then leave them alonePour steadily into warm jars — 70–80°C for Chunks, 58–60°C for CSI 468, straight after the stir on Eco Soy CSI 400. Let them set at room temperature, undisturbed, away from a fan or an air conditioner: uneven cooling is where wet spots and sinkholes come from, as set out in why candles get wet spots and sinkholes.

Cure 14–21 days, then burn one yourselfLids on, closed carton, out of sunlight. The Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks; this series works to 14–21 days for soy containers. Then burn one jar and record: minutes to a full melt pool, hot throw at 30 and at 180 minutes, cold throw from a closed jar, soot, mushrooming, and any film or colour change on the surface. The 180-minute column is the one that matters most with a single distillate, and the one most makers never write down.

Re-test the wick before you scaleA different oil is a different melt pool, so a wick proved with a fragrance oil is not automatically right with an essential oil at the same load. If the pool does not reach the glass in two to three hours, go one size up and burn again — Eco Candle Wicks ship in Thin (C1) and Thick (C2) at ₹5.90 each in tens, so the whole re-test costs less than a jar.
You cannot add essential oil to a candle that has already set. Dripping oil onto the top of a finished candle, or pushing it down a hole beside the wick, does not scent the candle — it leaves neat oil sitting on wax, where it can soak into the wick and pool at the surface instead of dissolving through the body. The only fix for an under-scented cured candle is to melt the wax back down, reweigh the total, top up to the load you want and re-pour, accepting that you are now working with wax that has been heated twice. Better: test in 120 g jars, not in a production run.

Two observations you can act on. Buying bigger does not help here: lavender is ₹6.844 per gram at every listed size, and Eco Soy CSI 400 is ₹399 for 1 kg against ₹1,996 for 5 kg — ₹399.20 per kilo, so the bigger bag saves nothing on the listed price. Buy what production needs and take recurring volumes to WhatsApp for a quote. And the oil is the biggest line in the candle: ₹1,314.05 of the ₹2,265.84 total, or 58%. Wax · the page that names essential oils
Eco Soy CSI 400
The wax to start on, for a documentation reason rather than a performance one: its page states "add your fragrance or essential oils at 85°C (185°F), stir gently for 2 minutes, and pour directly", gives a "Fragrance Add Temperature 80 to 90 degrees" and a "Melt Point 100°F (37.8°C)", and recommends Eco Wicks. It states no maximum fragrance load, which is exactly why you hold at 8% until a cured jar has been burned. At ₹399 per kilo it is also the cheapest kilo among CSI's soy container waxes, which matters when the oil is already the expensive half of the candle.
The oil most makers have in mind when they ask this question, and the easiest to test honestly because CSI also stocks a Lavender Fragrance Oil whose page states 6–10% for candles and a 48–72 hour soy cure — a like-for-like comparison in the same wax at the same load. The essential oil publishes no candle load and no flash point, so the wax's numbers govern. Its price per gram is ₹6.844 at 15 gm, 50 gm, 100 gm, 500 gm and 1 kg alike, which makes a 15 gm bottle a fair sample rather than a penalty: enough for two 120 g test jars at 6%.
Base · the one product with a stated essential-oil load
Massage Candle Base
Worth knowing even if you only make jar candles, because it is the single CSI page that states a percentage for essential oil directly: "Add skin-safe fragrance or essential oil at around 6-10% by weight for massage candles". The page describes a base "formulated to melt at a low, skin-friendly temperature" without giving a number, and is written for massage candles and body-melt collections — a skin-contact format, so skin-safe is doing real work in that sentence and the oil has to earn it. Ask for the documentation first.
Beeswax and coconut wax: yes, but with even less written down.Beeswax Pellets at ₹800 per kg are the natural-wax pairing most makers reach for, and the page states no fragrance load, no melt point, no add temperature and no pour temperature — it says only that it suits "container candles, votives, pillars, and tealights". Coconut Wax at ₹1,026.60 per kg is described as blending with soy or beeswax and states nothing numeric either. That is not a reason to avoid them; it is a reason to hold the load at 8%, pour two test jars and let the burn decide. The CSI principle
When the oil's page is silent, the wax's page is your specification. Read the wax.
An essential oil tells you almost nothing about how to use it in a candle, because the people who distil it are not selling to candle makers. Every number you need — the ceiling, the add temperature, the pour temperature, the cure — is printed on the wax you chose. Work from that and there is nothing left to guess.
What you may write on the label
This is the part of the essential-oil question that can cost a business real money, and it has nothing to do with wax.
A large amount of candle marketing attaches wellness, sleep, stress, mood and "aromatherapy benefit" language to essential-oil candles. No CSI page makes a therapeutic or health claim for any oil in the range, and this guide does not either. A candle is a scented object. The moment your listing promises a physiological effect, you are making a claim you cannot support from anything your supplier has published, and you have handed a customer a reason to be disappointed in a way that no amount of cure time will fix.
Everything factual is available to you, and it is a better story than the invented one. Name the material and the botanical, state the percentage, say which wax, and describe the scent in the ordinary language of a scent — bright, herbal, resinous, green. If a customer wants "natural", tell them exactly what is in the jar and at what load; a maker who can answer that precisely sounds more trustworthy than one reciting benefits. And if the blend is part essential oil and part fragrance oil, say so honestly: "made with lavender essential oil" and "scented with lavender essential oil" are different promises, and the blend arithmetic that sits behind that sentence is worked out in fragrance oil vs essential oil for candle making.

A note on the skin-contact edge of this category. A different oil at the same load can change how the wax melts, and the melt pool is where scent is released, so a wick proved with a fragrance oil is not automatically correct with a distillate. Burn a test jar and time it: you want a full pool reaching the glass in two to three hours, with no soot and no mushrooming. Can I use essential oils in beeswax or coconut wax?
Yes, with less to go on. CSI's Beeswax Pellets at ₹800 per kg state no fragrance load, melt point, add temperature or pour temperature, and Coconut Wax at ₹1,026.60 per kg states nothing numeric either beyond blending well with soy or beeswax. So hold the load at 8%, pour two test jars and let the burn decide, and remember beeswax brings its own faint honey character underneath whatever you add.
