Quick answers — read this first
So what temperature do I add fragrance at? The one your wax page states. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state 80–90°C; Eco Soy CSI 400 states 80–90°C, 85°C, stirred two minutes; CSI 468 states melt 50–53°C and pour 58–60°C.

Is the "add below the flash point" rule wrong? Not wrong — incomplete. It is sound as a ceiling and useless as an instruction, because it gives you no lower bound, and a load added to wax that is too cool will not dissolve properly. That failure mode is covered in adding fragrance oil too cold.

Does the rule ever change what I do? Yes, for three oils. Neroli states 85°C, Palo Santo 93°C and Gardenia 98°C — close enough to an 80–90°C band to be worth working at the bottom of it.

What about the jar? Seven CSI jar pages state "safe for hot-pour up to 85°C". On those vessels the glass, not the oil, is your tightest constraint at the pour.
The short answer
The wax sets the window: a stated add band exists because the oil has to go into solution. Too cool and it does not dissolve; too hot and you lose light notes. The band is the instruction.
The oil's flash point can narrow it from above — but only if a figure is published, and only if that figure is low enough to matter. Three of CSI's 18 measured values are; the other 15 are 42°C or more above the top of an 80–90°C band.
The vessel narrows the pour: "safe for hot-pour up to 85°C" appears on seven CSI jar pages. Whichever of the three constraints is tightest wins, every time.

Everything you actually operate lies in the left-hand third of this axis. Fifteen of the eighteen measured flash points sit so far to the right that no rule about them can change your thermometer reading. Three sit close enough to matter — and one of those three, Neroli's 85°C, falls inside the soy add band itself.
Straight answer
Should I set my fragrance add temperature from the oil's flash point?
No. Set it from the band your wax page states, then check whether anything else forces you lower. The wax band exists for a reason the flash point cannot supply: fragrance oil has to dissolve into molten wax, and that needs a minimum temperature as well as a maximum. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state fragrance in at 80–90°C and a pour at 70–80°C; Eco Soy CSI 400 states adding at 80–90°C, specifically 85°C, with two minutes of stirring; CSI 464 states melt and pour both as 80–90°C; CSI 468 states melt 50–53°C and pour 58–60°C. Against those bands, the flash point is a ceiling that is usually irrelevant: 15 of CSI's 18 measured values sit at 132°C or above, which is at least 42°C clear of the top of an 80–90°C band. Only three are close — Neroli at 85°C, Palo Santo at 93°C and Gardenia at 98°C, whose page tells you plainly to "add this oil to your wax at a temperature below 98°C". And for the remaining 88 of 107 oils no figure is published at all, which settles the argument on practical grounds: a rule you cannot apply to five oils in six is not a process. Work to the wax band, ask CSI for the SDS figure on WhatsApp before a production run, log the reading your thermometer actually showed, and let a burn test decide the rest.
One line: the wax page gives you the window, the oil's flash point occasionally trims the top of it, the jar trims the pour — and the thermometer reading you write down is what makes any of it repeatable.

The rule of thumb, taken seriously

It is repeated everywhere, it is not stupid, and it answers a question nobody at the bench is actually asking.

The rule is: add your fragrance oil to wax that is below the oil's flash point. You will find it on supplier pages, in forums and in course notes, and CSI's own product pages state versions of it. Gardenia is the most explicit: "check your specific wax's recommended addition temperature and ensure it is below 98°C before adding". Blue Ocean says its "flashpoint of 143°C (290°F) means standard handling precautions apply - always add to wax that has been cooled to the recommended pour temperature for your wax type". Jasmine says "Add to wax cooled to recommended pour temp before adding fragrance".

Read those three carefully and notice something: all three resolve into an instruction about the wax, not about the flash point. Gardenia points you at "your specific wax's recommended addition temperature". Blue Ocean and Jasmine point you at "the recommended pour temperature for your wax type". The number on the bottle appears in the sentence, but the operative instruction is a wax figure. That is the whole answer to this page's question, stated by the supplier, three times.

So the honest position is not "the rule is a myth". It is a sensible upper bound that happens to be slack for almost every oil a candle maker will use, and silent on the constraint that actually causes problems — adding too cold. If you have ever had oil pool on a set candle or bead out of the surface a fortnight later, the cause was far more likely the bottom of the band than the top.

The mistake: using the flash point as a target. Makers read "Flashpoint 192°C" and conclude 190°C is a fine wax temperature. It is not, for reasons unrelated to the flash point: soy wax pages state 80–90°C, seven in-stock glass jars state a hot-pour limit of 85°C, and the CSI Pro Mixer page says "Avoid using the mixer in wax above 95C". A high flash point buys handling comfort, not a hotter pour. The fix is one sentence — the flash point can only ever lower your add temperature, never raise it.

What CSI's wax pages actually state

Here is every stated temperature on the CSI candle waxes, exactly as published. Where a page states nothing, that is in the table too, because a blank changes what you do: your first batch has to establish the number, and you have to write it down.

Two honest notes. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state their pour temperature twice and differently — 75–80°C in the specification block, 70–80°C in the steps. Work to 75–80°C and you satisfy both; log what you used. And CSI 464's page states melting point and pour temperature as the same 80–90°C, which is high for a soy pour. Attribute it to the page when you cite it, and if a 464 candle gives you wet spots, pour cooler and note that you departed from the page.

The band is not one temperature, and that is the point
"80–90°C" is a 10-degree window, and where you sit inside it is a decision you should make deliberately and record. Sit at the bottom when the oil has a low published flash point, when it is citrus-led, or when the vessel states 85°C. Sit in the middle for everything else. Sit at the top only if a batch has told you to — if a high-load pour at 80°C left the melt cloudy and 88°C did not. The add-temperature guide works this through per wax.

The three oils where the two actually meet

This is what the whole question reduces to. Out of 107 pages, exactly three publish a measured flash point close enough to a working wax temperature to change what you do.

Gardenia is the easy case. Its stated 98°C sits 8°C above the top of the soy add band, so working anywhere inside 80–90°C already satisfies the page's own instruction. The page tells you to check the wax figure, and the wax figure already complies. Palo Santo at 93°C is the same situation with a narrower 3°C margin — close enough that we would sit at the middle or bottom of the band rather than at 90°C, to keep the batch repeatable.

Neroli is worth spelling out rather than glossing. Its stated 85°C is inside the 80–90°C add band, and it is exactly the figure Eco Soy CSI 400's page names as its add temperature: "add your fragrance or essential oils at 85°C (185°F)". On that wax, the page and the rule of thumb point in two directions at once, and no arithmetic resolves it. Three moves do: sit at the bottom of the band — 80°C on the soy waxes — ask CSI for the SDS figure and recommended add temperature for that oil, and pour a small batch and burn it. Coconut-soy removes the conflict: CSI 468's stated 58–60°C pour leaves 25°C of margin.

Do not extend this to the other 104 oils. Those three figures are published for those three products. Nothing about them transfers to a different citrus oil, white floral or resinous wood, however similar the scent. Where a page states no flash point — 56 state nothing, 32 state only the ">93°C" threshold, and Zesty Lemon says it is available on request — you have no figure, and inventing one to feel safe achieves nothing. Three constraints, and the tightest one wins

Most makers hold one number in their head. There are three, from three different product pages, and the smallest governs. In order, it takes about ten seconds once you have done it twice.

Check the vessel page for a pour limitThis is the constraint most often missed. Seven CSI jar pages state "safe for hot-pour up to 85°C", including the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 g fill, pack of 10 ₹944) and the Apothecary Glass Candle Jar. On those vessels a stated 80–90°C pour — which is what CSI 464's page gives — exceeds the glass figure at the top. Pour at or below 85°C and note it.

Take the lowest of the three as your ceiling, and the wax band's floor as your floorThat gives you a window, not a number. The CSI principle
The flash point can lower your add temperature. It can never raise it.
Everything that sets a floor — dissolution, a clean melt, a wax that will hold its load — comes from the wax page. Everything that sets a ceiling comes from the tightest of three figures: the wax band, the oil's published flash point, and your vessel's stated pour limit. A high flash point is permission to stop worrying, not permission to run hotter.
Before a production run, ask for the two numbers the page may not carry: the SDS flash point and the supplier's recommended add temperature for that specific oil. Both are handled on WhatsApp along with IFRA documentation, bulk pricing and GST invoicing. With Diwali on 8 November 2026, a new oil wants its add temperature settled by early October so the batch gets a full 14–21 day cure.

The 88 oils with no published figure

This is the majority case, and it is the case every rule of thumb quietly ignores.

Add up the pages that do not give you a number and the arithmetic is uncomfortable: 56 state nothing at all about flash point, 32 state only the threshold line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", and one states that the figure is available on request. That is 88 of 107 listings with no value you can work from. If your process depends on knowing the oil's flash point, your process does not exist for most of the range.

What the ">93°C" line does tell you is narrow but real: the figure is above 93°C, which is already above the top of every soy add band CSI states. It is not a measurement and must never be recorded as "93°C". As reassurance that the oil is not the binding constraint on an 80–90°C pour, it does the job.

Notice that the bench column is the same in all three rows. The absence of a flash point does not change your process, because the flash point was never driving it. What changes is your paperwork, and paperwork matters once you are selling: a formula card reading "not published — SDS requested 12 Sept 2026" is a professional record. The same card with a guessed number is a liability you wrote yourself.

Setting your own add temperature inside the band

A 10-degree band leaves a real decision, and there is a cheap way to settle it for your wax, oil and jar: pour six jars, change one thing, burn them. The point is not a universal truth about temperature — it is to fix a number in your recipe so the next hundred candles match each other. Run it like this. Melt the wax for all six jars together, then split it into two pots. Bring the first to 80°C, the bottom of the band, add 28.8 g of oil, stir two full minutes, pour three jars. Bring the second to 88°C and repeat identically. Same wax, oil, load, wick, jar and room — one variable. Label A1–A3 and B1–B3 with the actual readings, cure with lids on, then burn one of each at day 7 and day 14 for three hours, scoring cold throw, time to a full melt pool, flame behaviour and hot throw at 30 and 120 minutes. Anything that differs is attributable.

What a null result means here
Most makers running this on a high-flash-point oil find no difference they can rank blind, and that is a useful outcome rather than a wasted ₹1,098.72 — the band is forgiving for that combination and you can stop thinking about it. Where a difference does appear it tends to be with top-note-heavy oils, and to show in cold throw first. Pick the winner, write it into the recipe, leave it alone.
A flash point is somebody else's measurement of a bottle. An add temperature is your decision about a batch. Only one of the two belongs in your recipe.

If you have already poured a batch hotter than the band. Do not bin it and do not sell it either. Cure it properly, burn one jar to the bottom and judge it: if the cold throw is thin but the burn is clean, the likely cost was light top notes rather than anything structural, and the next batch at the stated temperature tells you how much. Record the temperature you actually used so the comparison means something. The mechanism is in added too hot, and the evaporation-versus-ignition distinction in can fragrance oil burn off in hot wax.

Should fragrance oil be added below its flash point?
Staying below a published flash point is sensible, and on CSI's range it happens automatically: 15 of the 18 measured values are 132°C or higher, while every stated soy add band tops out at 90°C. But it is a ceiling, not an instruction — it gives you no lower bound, and adding into wax that is too cool causes the real problems of separation and sweating. Work to the wax page's stated band, and let a published flash point lower your ceiling if it happens to be below the band's top.
At what temperature should I add fragrance oil to soy wax?
Whatever your wax page states. At CSI: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state a fragrance add temperature of 80–90°C and a pour of 75–80°C; Eco Soy CSI 400 states 85°C with two minutes of gentle stirring, and elsewhere 80 to 90 degrees; CSI 464's page states melt and pour both as 80–90°C. Different waxes, different numbers. Log the reading your thermometer showed, not the target.
What if my fragrance oil's flash point is lower than my wax's add temperature?
That happens with exactly one oil in CSI's published set: Neroli states 85°C, which sits inside an 80–90°C band and equals Eco Soy CSI 400's stated 85°C add figure. Three moves resolve it. Sit at the bottom of the band, 80°C. Ask CSI for the SDS figure and the recommended add temperature for that oil. Pour a small batch and burn it. Or switch wax — CSI 468's stated 58–60°C pour leaves 25°C of margin.
Does a high flash point mean I can pour hotter?
No. Nothing about the oil raises the wax's stated band or the vessel's stated limit. Seven CSI jar pages state "safe for hot-pour up to 85°C", the CSI Pro Mixer page says "Avoid using the mixer in wax above 95C", and soy add bands top out at 90°C. My oil's page doesn't state a flash point. What add temperature do I use?
The same one you would otherwise use: your wax page's stated band. This is the common case — 56 of 107 CSI pages state nothing and 32 state only the "> 93°C" threshold, which is not a value. Work at the middle of the band, or the bottom if the scent is citrus-led. Then request the SDS figure on WhatsApp and record it with the date, so your formula card carries a fact rather than a gap.
Does adding fragrance at a lower temperature give a stronger candle?
Not reliably — it depends on the oil, and you can test it for about ₹1,098.72 in materials: six 120 g jars, three added at 80°C and three at 88°C, everything else identical, cured 14 days and burned blind. Many makers find no rankable difference on a heavier oil, which is itself worth knowing. Where a difference appears it usually shows first in cold throw on top-note-heavy scents.
