Quick answers — read this first
What is actually making my candle sweat? One of four things: the wax and its stated ceiling, the fragrance load, the mixing (add temperature and stir time), or the storage temperature. The mechanism is the same for all four and is covered in why is my candle sweating oil; this page is how you find out which one it is.
What do I test first? Nothing. You read — the recorded load in grams and the add temperature. ₹0, and it rules two suspects in or out before you melt anything.
What is the commonest cause? A legal load added too cool with a 40-second stir. In the jar it looks identical to over-loading. Only the batch record tells them apart.
What should I change last? The wax — the most expensive test, the slowest to re-qualify, almost never the culprit, and where most makers start.
The short answer
Step 1 — free: check the recorded load in grams against the wax's stated ceiling (up to 13% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% on CSI 464) and check the add temperature you wrote down.
Step 2 — free: split the remaining jars between two storage locations for 14 days. That isolates storage temperature without spending a rupee.

Wax, fragrance load, mixing or temperature — how do I find out which one is making my candles sweat?
You eliminate them in order of what the test costs, not in order of what feels likely. Read the batch record first — the load in grams against your wax's stated ceiling, and the add temperature you noted at the bench. Free, and it clears or implicates two suspects immediately. Then split the remaining jars between two storage locations for fourteen days, which isolates storage temperature for nothing. Only then pour. One jar, identical recipe, at the wax's stated add temperature with a timed two-minute stir — ₹230.00. Clean means the mixing was the fault and the recipe was always sound. Still beading? One jar with the load dropped a step — ₹211.14. Change the wax last, at ₹435.64, because it is the slowest variable to re-qualify and rarely the cause. The four suspects, and what each one actually looks like
A candle that beads oil is not telling you what went wrong. It is telling you that something went wrong. Four things can produce the same beads, and only one of them is usually guilty.
Sweating is oil the wax is not holding. That mechanism is set out in why is my candle sweating oil. What it cannot tell you is which process variable caused it, because the beads look the same whatever the cause. That is this page's job, and it is elimination rather than inspection.
Four suspects, no fifth. Wax — the grade and the ceiling it is formulated to hold. Fragrance load — how much oil went in, in grams. Mixing — the temperature it went in at and how long you stirred. Storage temperature — where the jars cured. All four produce nearly identical symptoms, so guessing has a one-in-four hit rate and every guess costs a jar.

Suspect one — the wax and its stated ceilingImplicated by: a recorded load above the ceiling stated for the wax you actually bought. Ceilings are per wax, not per wax type — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks hold up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%, so a maker who switches and keeps a 12% recipe has changed everything. Cleared by: a load inside the stated ceiling, and the same wax batch pouring clean on another scent. Confirming test: the same oil at the same load in a different wax grade. Suspect two — the fragrance loadImplicated by: beading within 24 to 72 hours, on every jar, evenly, with a load at the top of the stated range or not recorded at all. A load you cannot state in grams is an implicated load. Cleared by: a load written down in grams, inside the ceiling, that has poured clean before with a different oil. Confirming test: one jar with the load dropped a step — 16 g down to 12 g on a 200 g candle. Cost: ₹211.14. If the lower jar sweats too, the load was never the problem, and you have avoided permanently weakening a sound recipe.

Suspect three — the mixingImplicated by: uneven results across one batch — two jars clean, three beading, one badly. Also a short or unrecorded stir, an add temperature taken from the recipe rather than a thermometer, and pouring straight after adding the oil. Cleared by: a thermometer reading inside the wax's stated band and a stir you timed. Confirming test: one jar, identical recipe, oil in at the stated temperature, timed two-minute stir. Cost: ₹230.00. This is the test that most often comes back clean, which is why it goes near the front.

Suspect four — the storage temperatureImplicated by: jars clean at day 3 and beading at day 10; sweating that comes and goes with the weather; a store room warmer than the pour room; stock near a window or a wall that catches afternoon sun. Cleared by: two halves of one batch, stored in two places, behaving identically. Confirming test: split the remaining jars between two locations and inspect at day 3, 7 and 14. Cost: ₹0 — you already own the jars, which is why storage is fourth on the list but one of the first two things you actually do.
The trap in all four. Every "implicated by" line above depends on something you wrote down. No recorded load, no cleared load. No recorded add temperature, no cleared mixing. Without a record all four suspects stay live and you are reduced to changing things at random. The 6% jar swaps 4 g of oil for 4 g of wax and comes to ₹211.14. The wax-change test adds a 500 g bag of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹299 to one jar's oil, glass and wick: ₹435.64. Total for the full sequence: ₹876.78. Add a Pen Thermometer at ₹354 if you do not own one, once, and the figure becomes ₹1,230.78.
Put that against the alternative: a maker who suspects the wax, orders a 5 kg bag at ₹2,537 for CSI 464 or ₹2,995 for Luxury Soy Chunks, re-qualifies the wick, and finds three weeks later that the new wax sweats too has spent three times the whole sequence to learn one fact.
Testing in the cheapest order, and why most makers do the opposite
The instinct when a batch fails is to distrust the material, so the first action is almost always a new wax. That is the most expensive way to learn nothing. A wax change moves several variables at once — melt point, pour window, pool temperature and therefore wick size. If the new batch is clean, you cannot say whether the old wax was at fault or whether you simply stirred for longer that day because you were paying attention.

Drop the load · ₹211.14 · one jarOnly if step three came back beading. Everything identical, including the timed stir at the stated temperature, with the load down one step — 16 g to 12 g on a 200 g candle. You are asking a question, not changing a recipe. Clean at 12 g and beading at 16 g means that oil and wax pairing does not hold 8%. Both sweating means the load is cleared, and you must not weaken the recipe on a hunch.

Change the wax · ₹435.64 · last, and only lastA 500 g bag covers two 184 g pours, so buy 500 g, not 5 kg. On CSI 464 at ₹260/500 g and need headroom? One variable per jar, and stop at the first clean result
The sequence is invalid if you change two things in one jar. Re-pour at the correct temperature and drop the load, and a clean jar tells you nothing you can act on. One change, inspect at day 3, 7 and 14, write it on the sheet, and stop the moment a jar comes back clean.
The CSI principle
Buy information before you buy materials. The two cheapest tests are the two most likely to be conclusive.

The commonest finding: a legal load, added too cool, with a 40-second stir
The candle looks over-loaded. The recipe is not over-loaded. Those two facts sit together far more often than any other pair in candle troubleshooting.
The pattern accounts for more sweating batches than the other three suspects together. A maker runs a legitimate load — say 8% in a wax rated to 10%. The wax melts, they get busy, the pitcher cools while they hunt for the oil bottle, and the fragrance goes in at around 65°C instead of the stated 80–90°C band. Forty seconds of vigorous stirring, looks incorporated, pour. Three days later every jar has an oily film.
It presents exactly like over-loading because the outcome is the same: oil that is in the jar but not in solution. Wax below its stated add temperature accepts oil as a suspension — it looks uniform in the pitcher because you are watching it move — but it has not dissolved into the wax structure. Forty seconds disperses; two minutes at temperature dissolves. As the candle sets and cures, suspended oil migrates to the surface and beads, which by eye is indistinguishable from surplus beading off a genuinely exceeded ceiling. Same beads, same timing, different cause, different fix.
So how do you tell them apart? You cannot, by looking. The discriminator is not visual and it is not chemical — it is your batch record. Over-loading is a number: a load in grams that exceeds the ceiling stated for that wax. Bad mixing is also a number: an add temperature below the stated band, a stir time under 120 seconds, or — most commonly — a blank where those numbers should be. If both numbers are recorded and the load is legal while the temperature is not, you have your answer for ₹0. If neither is recorded, you have to buy the answer at ₹230.00 by re-pouring. The distinction matters beyond the diagnosis. Misread bad mixing as over-loading and you drop the load permanently, 8% to 6%. It stops the sweating, because less suspended oil means fewer beads. It also costs you a quarter of your fragrance, weakens your throw, and becomes a change you never revisit because it appeared to work. That is the most expensive wrong answer in this field, and it is free to avoid if you wrote down the add temperature. Fragrance load is a weight percentage and oils differ in density, so millilitres will never give a repeatable load. Storage: the suspect that clears your recipe
A recipe can be sound and the candle can still sweat, because a wax's ability to hold oil falls as temperature rises. A jar stable at 24°C can bead at 34°C with nothing changed at the bench. That is why the same recipe behaves differently in April and December, and why moving stock to a metal shelf can make a two-year-old recipe start failing.
The store room matters more than the pour room, because the pour lasts an hour and the cure lasts a fortnight. Sun on a wall, a corrugated roof, the top shelf in an Indian summer, a car boot on a delivery run — all sit well above the room you poured in. The symptom is characteristic: clean at day 3, beading at day 10, sometimes recovering when the weather cools, which no formulation fault does.

Split the batch, not the recipeTake at least six jars from the same pour — same wax, oil, load and hour. Wipe every jar clean and photograph them so day 0 is documented, then divide into two equal groups. Never mix in jars from a second pour; the point is that everything except location is identical.

Two locations, honestly chosenGroup A goes to the coolest, most stable place you have — interior cupboard, ground floor, away from external walls. Group B stays exactly where the failing stock sat. What a storage verdict saves you. If storage is the cause and you took the formulation route instead, you would have dropped the load, changed wax, re-qualified a wick and spent ₹876.78 over six weeks — and the candles would still have sweated in July. If both halves sweat equally, you have spent ₹0 to remove a suspect for good.

Is my candle sweating because of the wax or the fragrance oil?
Usually neither on its own — it is the relationship between your load and the ceiling that wax is formulated to hold, and very often it is the mixing rather than either material. Do not answer this by swapping wax. Read the record first: if the load in grams sits inside the stated ceiling (up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% for CSI 464) and the add temperature was below the stated band, the mixing is the likely fault.
What should I test first when my candles start sweating?

Should I lower my fragrance load to stop candles sweating?
Not until you have cleared mixing and storage. Dropping the load reduces beading whatever the real cause, which is what makes it a dangerous first move: it looks like a fix and silently costs you a quarter of your fragrance. Test it as a question — pour one jar at the lower load for ₹211.14 and only make the drop permanent if that jar is clean while the original is not.
