Quick answers — read this first
What is the difference? Cold throw is what an unlit candle releases from a solid surface at room temperature, usually into a small lidded space over days. Hot throw is what a lit candle releases from a warm melt pool into an open room over hours. Different surface, temperature, volume and timescale.

Why does one oil do both well and another only one? Because blends put their weight in different tiers. A top-led citrus direction flatters the cold jar; a base-led woody or gourmand direction has more left to carry hour two. 88 of 107 CSI pages state the pyramid, so this is readable before you buy.

Which one matters more? Cold throw sells the first unit; hot throw earns the second. If you only have budget to get one right, get the one your customers will judge you on at home.

How do I test both properly? Two columns on one sheet, scored on the same jars: cold on the same three mornings, hot from the doorway at minute 15, hour 1 and hour 3. Three oils × two jars costs ₹2,236.77 of materials, ₹188.36 a jar.
The short answer
Two instruments, one oil: a cool solid surface into millilitres of trapped air, versus a warm liquid pool into a whole room. Nothing about those two arrangements obliges them to agree.
The pyramid predicts the divergence: stated top notes drive the cold reading, stated heart and base carry the lit hours. Read the tier the page puts its adjectives on.
Score both, on one sheet, on the same jars: two columns, three readings each, same room and same hour. A single "does it smell?" verdict throws away half the information you already paid for.

Five inputs, each different by at least an order of magnitude between the two columns. The last row is the one most makers never account for: the cold jar is largely a report on the tier a perfumer designed to arrive first, and the lit candle after its first half hour is a report on the tiers designed to stay.
Straight answer
Why does the same fragrance oil give a strong cold throw and a weak hot throw, or the other way round?
Because the two readings are produced by arrangements that share almost nothing. Cold throw is evaporation from a cool solid surface into a small, still, usually lid-covered volume, accumulated over days — so it is dominated by whichever materials in the blend are volatile enough to leave wax at room temperature, which in perfumery language is largely the top. Hot throw is evaporation from a warm melt pool into a whole room over the hours of one burn, and after the first half hour the light materials are largely spent; what carries the rest of the evening is the heart and base. So a blend's structure predicts which reading it will flatter, and 88 of the 107 CSI oil pages publish that structure. Lemongrass and Lime states a top of "Zesty lime, fresh lemongrass - bright, citrusy, immediately uplifting" over a base of "Subtle cedarwood, soft musk"; Sultan's Smoke states a base of "Amber, Musk, Warm balsamic notes" with "Deep warmth that lingers and anchors the fragrance". Those two pages are describing different jobs. Neither is a defect. What is a defect is judging both oils with one verdict, because you then have no idea which half of your product is working. The fix is a two-column sheet — cold scores and hot scores kept separately on the same jars, in the same room, at the same hour — and a six-jar comparison across three structures costs ₹2,236.77 in materials, ₹188.36 a jar, using Luxury Soy Wax Chunks in 120 g Green Shiny Glass Jars.
One line: cold throw is a report on the top of the pyramid at room temperature, hot throw is a report on the heart and base at pool temperature — so score them in two columns and stop averaging two different facts.

Two instruments, one oil

If a laboratory handed you two machines this different and asked you to average their outputs, you would refuse.

Start with the definitions, stated carefully, because most of the confusion in this topic is definitional rather than technical. Cold throw is the scent an unlit finished candle releases into the air around it. Hot throw is the scent a burning candle releases into the room it is in. Both are properties of a finished candle — not of a bottle, not of a wax, not of an oil in isolation — and both depend on the wax, the load, the vessel, the wick, the cure and the room, not only on the fragrance.

What the diagram above sets out is that the two share an oil and differ in everything else. The cold arrangement is patient and enclosed: a fixed surface, ambient temperature, a tiny volume, and weeks in which a concentration can build. The hot arrangement is urgent and open: a small growing surface, a much higher temperature, a room-sized volume, and only the hours of a burn. That asymmetry has one non-obvious consequence worth stating: cold throw is a stock and hot throw is a flow. When a customer lifts a lid they receive everything that collected while the jar was closed. When they light the candle they receive whatever it can produce per hour, continuously, against ventilation.

This is also why the two failures feel so different. A weak cold throw is noticed in a shop, at a stall, or in the first ten seconds of unboxing, and it costs you the sale. A weak hot throw is noticed at home, hours in, weeks later, and it costs you the reorder and sometimes the review. Same candle, two commercial exposures, two different remedies — and if your notes only contain one number per candle, you cannot tell which exposure you are failing.

Three different things get called "cold throw", and only one of them is the product. The scent of the oil in the bottle is a fourth thing again and predicts neither reading. The scent of the wax while it is still molten in the pot is not cold throw either — it is a hot reading of an unfinished candle at a temperature no customer will ever experience. Cold throw is specifically the finished, cured candle, unlit, at room temperature. Score only that, and score it with the lid off for a fixed number of seconds, or your readings are not comparable week to week.

Why a pyramid answers two questions

A perfumer designs an arrival and a stay. Your two readings ask about one each.

The top-heart-base convention is a commercial shorthand rather than a measurement, but it encodes something real: the order in which materials leave. Light, highly volatile materials go first and define an opening. Middle-weight materials define the body. Heavy, slow materials define what is still detectable much later. That ordering is why a single blend can produce two unrelated verdicts from your two instruments — and why the sentences a page uses about each tier are a usable forecast.

Read the table as a set of predictions, not results. In each case the question is: which tier is the page putting its strongest language on, and therefore which of your two columns is likely to score higher? Then go and find out, because a forecast that is never checked is just a preference.

Structure is a forecast; the wax sets the dose
Nothing in a pyramid tells you how much to use. The load ceiling belongs to the wax: up to 13% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (its page states 8–13% of total wax weight, 10% recommended), up to 10% on Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, up to 13% on Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468. Where the oil page states a narrower band — Lemongrass and Lime states "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles", Solar Bloom states "Recommended load - candles 8-10% soy wax" — work to the lower of the two numbers. These are formulation limits, not regulatory ones.

Two honest limits on this method. First, five of the 107 pages state no notes or profile at all and 14 more state a single-note profile without tiers, so the forecast is simply unavailable for some oils — Sultan's Smoke, for instance, states a full pyramid but no candle load percentage, so its dose comes from your wax page. Second, a pyramid is written to describe a fragrance on skin or in the air, not specifically in wax at 8% released from a 28 cm² pool. It is the best free predictor you have. It is not a substitute for the sheet below.

The four outcomes, and what each one tells you to do

Once you are scoring in two columns, every candle you test lands in one of four boxes. The value of the framework is that each box has a different action attached — and two of the four are commercial decisions rather than reformulation problems.

The weak-cold, strong-hot box is where money is left on the table most often. A base-led candle that under-sells itself through a lid is not broken; it is mis-presented. Three fixes cost almost nothing: cure lids-on so the headspace is intact when the customer opens it, keep the lid on in transit and on the shelf, and write one line of copy that sets the expectation — "opens gently and builds through the first half hour" is honest and reframes a slow start as design. Compare that with the cost of switching to a top-led oil you did not want, which changes the product to fix a presentation problem.

The two-column test sheet

One sheet per scent, two columns, six numbers. Anything less and you are remembering, not measuring.

The design below compares three structures under identical conditions. Two jars per oil, because one jar is a story; a 120 g candle at 8% in a Green Shiny Glass Jar with Golden Lid, whose page states 120 gm capacity, 6 cm diameter and 6.5 cm height; one wax, one wick code, one pour session, one cure length. The only difference between the arms is the oil, which is the only way the result means anything.

Buy a seventh jar and leave the fragrance out of it
An unscented jar on the same wax, wick and vessel costs ₹50 for the glass, ₹5.90 for the wick and ₹66.23 of wax — ₹122.13, and it is the only reference in the experiment that tells you what a zero looks like on the day you are scoring. It matters most in the cold column, where a faint genuine reading and an imagined one are very hard to distinguish without something to compare against.
Note the pack ladder before you commit: Sultan's Smoke lists 100g, 500g and 1 kg only, so the smallest trial is ₹799, while Lemongrass and Lime starts at ₹116.52 for 15 gm and Solar Bloom at ₹125 for 15g. Which lever moves which throw

The practical payoff of separating the two columns is that your levers are not symmetrical. Some changes move both readings, some move one and leave the other alone, and one of them moves cold throw while doing nothing whatsoever to the burn. Knowing which is which stops you spending on the wrong side of the problem.

The CSI principle
Cold throw and hot throw are not two grades of the same thing. They are two products sharing one jar, and you are selling both of them to the same person at two different moments.
Which is why they need two columns, two rankings and sometimes two different oils in the range — and why a single score per candle is the most expensive shortcut on the bench.

Three oils across the structure spectrum

These are the three arms of the comparison above, chosen to sit at different points on the pyramid rather than to be ranked. Oil cost is for a 120 g candle at 8% — 9.6 g — at 1 kg pricing. Where a page states no load or no flash point, this guide says so.

Which reading your business should optimise

The honest answer depends on how you sell, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than by accident. If most of your revenue comes from markets, stalls and exhibitions, the cold reading is doing the selling: a customer lifts a lid, decides in two seconds, and may never tell you what the burn was like. Optimising cold throw there is rational — cure lids-on, keep stock boxed, and favour structures with a vivid stated opening.

If most of your revenue comes from repeat orders, gifting and corporate, the hot reading is the whole business, because the buyer and the judge are the same person and the judgement happens at home. There the base of the pyramid, the pool width and the cure length are what you are actually selling, and a candle that wins the lid test and loses the evening will show up as a flat reorder rate months before anybody writes you a complaint.

Most Indian candle brands are somewhere in between, which argues for the same thing the two-column sheet argues for: run both columns and let the range split the job. A citrus-led scent can carry the stall and the summer collection; an anchored woody or gourmand can carry the gifting line and the Diwali range. Working back from Diwali on 8 November 2026, a batch that needs a full 21-day cure has to be poured by mid-October, and testing both columns before that date is what turns a guess about the festive line into a decision. If your hot column is weak across every arm, the cause is more likely to be delivery than fragrance, and the ordered diagnosis is in the six-check guide rather than in a new bottle.

What is the difference between cold throw and hot throw?
Cold throw is the scent an unlit finished candle releases from a solid surface at room temperature, usually accumulating in a lidded jar over days. Hot throw is the scent a burning candle releases from a warm melt pool into a room over the hours of one burn. They differ in surface, temperature, air volume and timescale, and after the first half hour of a burn they are effectively reporting on different tiers of the same blend — which is why one candle can score very differently on the two.
Why does my candle smell strong cold and weak when burning?
Two likely causes, in order of cost to rule out. First, delivery: measure the pool at hour three, and if it has not reached the glass, the wick is under-sized for that diameter — Eco Candle Wicks in Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 and Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 give you a two-arm ladder for ₹3.54 of difference. Can a candle have good hot throw but poor cold throw?
Yes, and it is common on base-led woody, gourmand and oriental blends. It is usually not a fault — it is the structure behaving as designed, sometimes made worse by curing with the lids off or storing stock unlidded, both of which spend the headspace a customer would have met. Fix the presentation before the formula: cure lids-on, keep stock boxed, and put one line in your copy about the scent opening as it burns. Then judge whether you still want to change the oil.
Which matters more commercially, cold throw or hot throw?
Cold throw wins the first order; hot throw wins the second. If you sell mainly at markets and stalls, where a lid is lifted and a decision made in seconds, the cold reading carries your revenue. If you sell mainly through repeat orders, gifting and corporate, the hot reading is the product, because the buyer judges it at home hours into a burn. Most brands need both, which is the argument for letting different scents in the range do different jobs rather than asking one oil to do everything.
Do base notes really matter more for hot throw?
As a forecast, yes: heavier, slower materials are what remain detectable later in a burn once the light top materials have largely gone. That is why 88 of 107 CSI pages stating a full pyramid is genuinely useful information. But treat it as a direction of travel rather than a dose or a promise — a pyramid describes a fragrance in general, not specifically at 8% in soy released from a small pool, and no page publishes a measured throw figure. How long should I cure before comparing cold and hot throw?
Score both on the same day, after the same cure, and make that day late enough to be meaningful. Standard practice for soy container candles is 14 to 21 days; the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing. Comparing a day-4 cold score with a day-18 hot score tells you about the calendar, not about the oils — the two cure curves are a separate question.
