Does Candle Cure Time Affect Fragrance Throw?

Why do people disagree about how long? Because they are measuring different things. The cold curve — what a lidded jar smells like — is usually readable early. The hot curve — what a lit candle does to a room at hour three — typically keeps changing later, and more so with a heavy base.
What do the pages say? Where a CSI oil page states a cure it is usually 48–72 hours for soy and 24–48 for paraffin before burn testing. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states a minimum of 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks. Series practice for a candle you will sell is 14–21 days.
How do I find my own answer? Four jars from one pour: burn one at day 7, one at day 14, one at day 21, and cold-score all of them every week — ₹1,072.18 of materials, ₹198.71 consumed per jar.
Two curves, not one
Almost every disagreement about curing collapses once you notice that "throw" is two measurements. Cold throw is what an unlit jar does. Hot throw is what a lit candle does. They share an oil and a wax and nothing else: different surface, different temperature, different air volume, different timescale. It would be surprising if they improved in lockstep, and in practice they do not.
The cold reading is taken from a solid surface at room temperature into a few millilitres of air under a lid. That arrangement reaches a usable state quickly, which is why a jar can smell convincing within days — and why a maker whose whole business is stall sales and unboxing videos may honestly conclude that a short cure is fine. The hot reading is taken from a warm pool into a room, and the material that carries hours two and three is the heavier part of the blend, which is the part most affected by how completely the oil has settled into the wax. That is why the maker whose customers burn candles at home reaches a different conclusion from the same batch.
Two practical consequences follow. First, the question "is it cured yet?" needs a suffix — cured enough for a photograph and a stall, or cured enough to represent the product in someone's living room. Second, the two curves want different evidence: cold throw can be tracked on the same jars week after week without destroying anything, while every hot-throw reading burns a jar. That asymmetry is the whole reason the test in this guide has the shape it does.

What is actually changing in the wax
Soy wax is not a single substance solidifying into a single form. It is a mixture that crystallises, and the arrangement it reaches immediately after a pour is not the arrangement it settles into. Over days and weeks the crystal structure continues to order itself, and the fragrance oil — which is dissolved in the wax, not suspended in it — finishes distributing through that structure. The practical upshot is a change in how tightly the wax holds the oil at its surface and in the molten layer, which is precisely what governs release.
Three things follow that are worth stating plainly. The mass is fixed. If you weighed 12 g of oil into a 150 g candle, that candle contains 12 g of oil at every point in its cure, and any sentence implying a candle "develops more fragrance" is describing perception, not chemistry. Conditions matter more than people expect. Crystallisation depends on temperature history, so a candle cured in a hot room near a window is not running the same experiment as one cured in a dark cupboard — which is one reason two makers with the same recipe get different answers. The wax is the variable that changed, so the wax's own guidance is the starting point: the Chunks page's minimum of 48 hours and ideal of one to two weeks is a statement about that wax, not about fragrance oil in general.
One more caution, because it is the most common reversal of this argument. A long cure is not a repair for a badly built candle. If the wick is undersized for the diameter, three weeks will not open the pool; if the load was poured at 5% when the wax states up to 13%, three weeks will not find the missing grams. Cure is a multiplier on a candle that was made correctly, which is why it belongs after a wick check in any diagnosis and not instead of one.
The four-jar, two-track test
This is the smallest design that gives you both curves. Three scented jars, because each hot-throw reading destroys one; one unscented control, because a faint reading needs a reference. All four cold-scored on the same three mornings. The costing below uses a 150 g candle at 8% — 138 g of wax and 12 g of oil — in a Black Glossy Glass Jar, whose page states a height of 8 cm and a width of 7 cm.

Five things that move with the calendar and are not the cure
This is the section that decides whether your test result is worth anything. Any comparison across time is vulnerable to everything else that also changed across that time, and in a small Indian workshop most of the items below change without anybody deciding to change them. Control what you can; note the rest on the sheet so that a strange result has an explanation available.

Three oils and what their pages say about waiting
Cure guidance is published unevenly across the range, which is itself useful to know before you design a test. Two of the three below state a cure window; one states a load and no cure at all, in which case you fall back on the wax page. Oil cost is for a 150 g candle at 8% — 12 g — at 1 kg pricing, so it matches the test above.

What three weeks is worth against the only other lever
Here is the argument in rupees, because that is the form in which a production decision actually gets made. Suppose your day-21 jar reads better than your day-7 jar. The alternative way to chase a stronger candle is to raise the load, and on a 150 g candle going from 8% to 10% means 12 g of oil becoming 15 g. With Chocolate Fudge that is ₹11.89 more per candle; with Cinnamon ₹15.93; with Gardenia ₹13.00. Across a 250-candle festive run, Chocolate Fudge alone adds ₹2,972.50 to your bill of materials, and it adds it again on every run after that.
The cure costs ₹0. It costs calendar, which is a real constraint and sometimes a binding one — but it never appears on an invoice, it never compounds, and it applies to every scent in the range at once rather than being a per-scent decision. That asymmetry is why a cure test is the highest-return experiment in this cluster: you run it once on one oil, you learn the shape of your own process, and then you stop paying for the guess.

One last point about what the test buys you beyond the answer. A recipe card that records "cold throw settled at day 7, hot throw settled at day 14, verified on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 8% with a C2 wick in a 7 cm jar" is a sentence you can hand to whoever pours the next batch, and a defence when a customer asks why the candle is dispatched two weeks after the order. The cure stops being a superstition you defend and becomes a step with a number attached — which is the difference between a workshop and a process.
