Quick answers — read this first
Does the wick change hot throw? Indirectly and decisively. Fragrance leaves a burning candle from the surface of the melt pool, so pool area is release area — and the wick sets the pool's width. In a jar of stated 6 cm diameter, a pool stalling at 3 cm releases from 7.07 cm² instead of 28.27 cm².

Why does a small shortfall cost so much? Because area is πr². In that same 6 cm jar the outermost 5 mm of pool radius is 30.6% of the whole surface — the ring you can least afford to leave solid sits closest to the glass.

So buy the biggest wick? No. Once the pool reaches the glass the jar caps the area, and extra wick buys heat, soot and mushrooming instead of surface. The target is the standard one: a pool that reaches the wall in two to three hours and burns clean.

What does CSI publish about wick size? Very little, honestly: only two wick pages state a diameter at allEco Candle Wicks Loose ("designed specifically for 2 inch diameters") and Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made ("engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm"). Everything in between is a test you run.
The short answer
The wick sets the area, the oil sets the dose: load decides how many grams of fragrance are in the jar; pool area decides how many square centimetres are releasing it per hour. A quiet candle with a small pool is a delivery problem, not a dosage problem.
Work in cm², not in adjectives: π × (diameter ÷ 2)² tells you the surface. Always write the jar's stated diameter next to the figure, because the same wick is a different wick in a different jar.
Test two cotton sizes before you spend on anything else: Eco Candle Wicks are listed in Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 each and Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 each, flat across every pack size, so a ten-wick test pack costs the same per wick as a thousand.

Bar length is melt-pool area, calculated as π × (pool diameter ÷ 2)² for a jar whose page states a 6 cm diameter. The pool only has to fall 1 cm short of the glass to give away 31% of the releasing surface — and no wick can push the surface past the last bar, because the jar sets that limit.
Straight answer
Does the wick size change how strongly a candle smells when it is burning?
Yes, and the mechanism is geometry rather than chemistry. A burning candle releases fragrance from the exposed surface of its melt pool, so the pool is the evaporating surface — and the wick is the only part of the recipe that decides how wide that pool becomes. Because the surface of a circle is π × radius², a modest shortfall in pool width is a large shortfall in release area. In a jar whose page states a 6 cm diameter, such as the Black Shiny Glass Jar with Golden Lid at a stated 120 gm capacity, a full pool is 28.27 cm²; a pool that stalls at 3 cm is 7.07 cm², which is exactly a quarter. Both jars hold the same 9.6 g of fragrance oil at an 8% load in a 120 g candle, but one releases it through four times the surface. That is why raising the load so often fails to fix a quiet candle: the dose was never the constraint. The limit works the other way too — once the pool reaches the glass, the jar caps the area and a bigger wick buys depth, soot and mushrooming instead of surface. The target is the standard one: a pool that reaches the wall in two to three hours and burns clean. Getting there costs ₹5.90 for a Thin (C1) Eco wick or ₹9.44 for a Thick (C2) — the cheapest experiment on the bill of materials.
One line: the wick does not add fragrance, it adds square centimetres of melt pool — up to the limit the jar's diameter allows, and no further.

The square law, worked in one 6 cm jar

Fragrance does not leave a candle through the flame. It leaves through the surface of the pool — and surfaces are measured in squares.

Start with the arithmetic that makes the rest of this page obvious. The area of a circular melt pool is π × (diameter ÷ 2)². Because the diameter is squared, area climbs far faster than width: double the pool's width and you quadruple the releasing surface; lose a fifth of the width and you lose more than a third of the surface.

Every figure in this section is worked for one jar with a stated 6 cm diameter — a specification published on several CSI jars, including the Black Shiny Glass Jar with Golden Lid ("6 cm diameter, 6.5 cm height", capacity 120 gm) and the Shot Glass Jar ("Height - 8cm Diameter - 6cm", fill capacity 130 gram). Quoting the diameter next to the area is not pedantry: a pool area with no jar attached is meaningless, and it is the commonest way wick advice gets copied into the wrong candle.

Worked out above: area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)². π × 1² = 3.14 cm²; π × 1.5² = 7.07; π × 2.1² = 13.85; π × 2.5² = 19.63; π × 2.75² = 23.76; π × 3² = 28.27. Shares are each area ÷ 28.27, and the unmelted ring is (6 − pool width) ÷ 2 in millimetres. "First-order release rate" treats evaporation as proportional to exposed area, all else equal — the physics of the surface, not a measured CSI result. Your own burn test produces the numbers for your recipe.

Read the fourth column again, because it is the counter-intuitive one. A pool sitting 5 mm short of the glass looks almost finished to the eye, and is releasing from 69% of the available surface. In this jar the outermost 5 mm of pool radius carries 30.6% of the releasing surface — 8.64 cm² of the 28.27 cm² total. The ring most easily dismissed as "nearly there" is the one that matters most, and the only thing that opens it is a wick with enough heat output for that diameter of wax.

Measure the pool, never estimate it
Judging a pool by eye is how makers convince themselves a wick is right. Lay a steel rule across the mouth of the jar at the end of hour two, read the melted width in millimetres at its widest point, then read it again at hour three, and write both down. A pool of 48 mm and one of 60 mm look similar in a photograph and differ by 10.18 cm² of releasing surface in a 6 cm jar. For a second opinion on what your number means for your jar and wax, the line on WhatsApp is the fastest route.

The bottom row is a ceiling set by the jar, not the wick: in a 6 cm jar no wick produces more than 28.27 cm² of pool, because there is no more surface to melt. The wick's job is to reach the ceiling the vessel sets; setting a ceiling that suits the room is the candle diameter question.

What CSI's wick pages actually state

Six wick products in the collection. Exactly two of them put a number on the jar they are for — and that is more honest than a chart nobody tested in your wax.

Makers arrive at a wick listing expecting a sizing chart: this wick for 5 cm, that one for 7 cm. CSI's pages mostly do not provide one, and the reason is not laziness — a wick's behaviour depends on the wax's melting point, the load, the dye, the glass thickness and the temperature of the room you pour in. What the pages do give you is a short, checkable set of facts, set out here in full with nothing added.

Now look at the same question from the fragrance side, because that is where the instruction actually appears. Of the 107 CSI fragrance-oil pages, twelve mention a wick at all and seven tell you plainly to size the wick against the vessel. Verbena is the most direct: "Test wick size based on container diameter." Cinnamon says "Test wick size based on container dimensions and wax type." Palo Santo says "Wick testing is recommended based on your container and wax type." Three product pages, three versions of the same sentence: the diameter is yours to match.

The mistake: treating the ready-made cotton wick as "the bigger Eco wick". It is the one CSI wick with a stated lower bound, and that bound rules it out of most jar candles. Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made are "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" — so in a jar of stated 6 cm diameter you are fitting a wick built for at least 50.27 cm² of pool into a jar that caps out at 28.27 cm² (π × 4² against π × 3²). The result is an over-hot, over-deep pool and a sooting flame, not a stronger candle. Above 8 cm across it is the right wick and ₹12 each is the right price. Below it, stay with C1 and C2, or — if your vessel is near 5 cm, like the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar at a stated 5.3 cm — with Eco Candle Wicks Loose, the one page written for 2 inch (5.08 cm) diameters, which works out at ₹8.26 a wick at a 10 cm cut from the 5 m length.

The two sizes exist so that you can run a comparison rather than take advice. Buy both, pour the same wax, oil, load and jar behind each, and let the melt pool decide. The commercially useful detail is that the listed price per wick never changes with pack size — ₹5.90 for C1 and ₹9.44 for C2 whether you buy ten or a thousand — so there is no penalty for testing in small numbers and no reward for guessing early and buying deep. One CSI customer, Monika Deep, says the "Quality of the wick is good for jar candles"; note that the Thick (C2) ten-wick pack is currently sold out while the twenty is listed.

A wooden wick presents a wide, flat flame instead of a round one — a genuinely different way of feeding heat into the same wax — and the page states each pack "contains 10 wicks and wick tabs". It is also the one wick line where buying deeper changes the per-wick price: ₹59 each in tens, ₹47.20 in fifties, ₹41.30 in hundreds. Treat it as a third arm of a test rather than an upgrade: nothing on the page states a diameter, and if both a wooden and a cotton wick reach the glass cleanly, the cheaper wick wins on cost of goods.

The opposite mistake: a wick too big for the jar

Everything above argues for a wider pool, so the temptation is to fit the largest wick available and stop thinking. That fails, and it fails in a way that specifically damages fragrance. The reason goes back to the ceiling in the table: the pool cannot get wider than the jar. Past the point where the melt reaches the glass, the extra heat an oversized wick delivers has nowhere useful to go, so it goes into depth and temperature instead of area.

Four things follow, and a customer notices all four. The flame runs tall and restless, putting soot on the glass and a carbon head on the tip. The pool deepens, so the surface runs hotter than the recipe was designed around, which drives the light, volatile top notes off early — the candle reads sharp for half an hour and hollow afterwards, the complaint covered in why a candle smells cold but not lit. And it burns down faster, so fragrance meant to last thirty hours is spent in twenty.

No wick page publishes a melt-pool temperature, so you cannot calculate this one. Wax pages state melting and pour temperatures — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state fragrance in at 80–90°C and a pour at 70–80°C — but a burning candle's pool temperature is not a published specification anywhere in the range, and it is not the same thing as a melting point. The honest method is observational: burn the jar, watch the flame and the glass, and if you want a number, read the pool yourself with a Pen Thermometer at ₹354 at a fixed point in the burn and log it. A figure measured in your own jar beats one read about somebody else's.
Trim before every burn, or the third burn lies to you. An untrimmed wick grows a mushroomed tip, and a mushroomed tip changes the flame — so burn three of the same jar can produce a wider, dirtier pool than burn one and tempt you to conclude the wick is too big when the real fault is maintenance. The Candle Wick Trimmer page states the rule plainly: "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn for the best results!" Do that on every jar in a test, or your comparison is measuring your own housekeeping. The underlying mechanism is in why candle wicks mushroom.

There is a quieter reason to distrust the biggest wick: it hides other faults. A very hot pool masks a short cure or a poorly incorporated oil for twenty minutes, so a batch passes a quick sniff test and disappoints in a customer's living room. A correctly sized wick gives an honest reading of the recipe.

The wick is 3.4% of the candle and 100% of the pool

Here is the commercial argument in rupees. Take a 120 g candle at an 8% load — 110.4 g of wax and 9.6 g of oil — in a jar of stated 6 cm diameter, using Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599 per kg and Verbena Fragrance Oil at the 100 gm price of ₹590, or ₹5.90 per gram.

That comparison is the one to remember. Stepping a hundred candles up a cotton size costs about six candles' worth of fragrance oil and is the only change here that can double the releasing surface. The wooden wick is a genuine cost decision at ₹5,310 per hundred, which is why it belongs in a test before it belongs in a product. Raising the load — the move most makers try first — adds oil to a jar whose release area you have not yet fixed, and that arithmetic is in does adding more fragrance oil improve hot throw.

The CSI principle
Load is what you paid for. Pool area is what the room receives. The wick is the cheapest line on the invoice and the only one that converts the first into the second.
A ₹5.90 component decides whether 9.6 g of fragrance oil evaporates from 7 cm² or from 28 cm². No other decision at that price has as much leverage, and none is easier to test, because the per-wick price does not change with the size of the pack.

Convert pool widths into cm² before you decide, then re-run the winner at your real sizeCompare areas, not millimetres, because area is what the room receives: π × (width ÷ 2)². A jar that reached 52 mm against one that reached 60 mm is 21.24 cm² against 28.27 cm² — 25% of the releasing surface. The arm that reaches the glass in two to three hours and burns clean wins; if two do, the cheaper wick wins. Then remember a wick proven in a stated 6 cm jar is proven for that jar: move to the 200 ml matte glass jar at a stated 7 cm width and the ceiling shifts to 38.48 cm², so the question reopens.
Buy the spares deliberately
The packs leave fourteen unused wicks after this ladder, and that is the point: a failed arm should be repeatable next weekend without a second order. Measuring a pool, and the sheet that records it

A wick test produces one number that matters — pool width in millimetres at a known time — and half a dozen that qualify it. Without a sheet the qualifying observations are gone within a week and the test has to be run again. This is the minimum set of columns, and what each one protects you from.

The last row deserves its own sentence. Olfactory fatigue is real and fast: whoever poured the candle and sat with it all evening is the least reliable judge of its throw. Score on entering a room you have been out of for fifteen minutes, and where you can, have a second person score the jars without knowing which wick is in which. That one discipline removes more false conclusions than any purchase.

What a bigger wick cannot fix

Suppose the ladder finishes, one arm reaches the glass in two and a half hours, burns clean — and the candle still reads quiet in a room. That is a useful result, because it rules the wick out. The pool is at its ceiling, the surface is as large as this jar allows, the wick has done its job, and a bigger one now makes the candle worse. What is left is a short list, each item with its own test.

Cure: a soy container candle judged at day 4 is not the candle you sell, and the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page itself asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks. Load, up to the wax's stated ceiling: Chunks state 8–13% with 10% recommended, CSI 464 states up to 10% — formulation limits published by the wax, not targets and never regulatory limits. The wax, which sets the pool's temperature as well as the ceiling, compared in does wax type affect hot throw. The oil's structure, where a base-heavy pyramid survives a cool soy pool better than an all-top-note one. And the vessel: if 28.27 cm² is not enough surface for the room, the answer is a wider candle or two candles, not a hotter wick.

The ordering mistake: buying a new oil before ruling out the wick. A fresh 500 gm bottle of fragrance oil is a three- or four-figure decision; a pair of wick sizes is ₹247.80 for thirty wicks. If a candle is quiet and you have not yet measured its pool width, you are proposing to solve an unmeasured problem with the most expensive tool in the cupboard. The opposite is worth saying too, because makers over-correct. If your pool has never reached the glass in any burn, no cure, no new oil and no extra percent of load will rescue the candle — you are filling a room through a quarter of the available surface. Fix the geometry, then judge the fragrance.

Frequently asked questions

Does wick size affect hot throw, or only how fast the candle burns?
Both, through the same mechanism. Fragrance evaporates from the melt pool's surface, so pool area is release area, and the wick decides how wide the pool gets. In a jar of stated 6 cm diameter a 3 cm pool is 7.07 cm² against a full pool's 28.27 cm² — a quarter of the surface releasing the same 9.6 g of oil. Burn rate moves with it, so an oversized wick shortens the candle's life as well as overheating the pool.
Which wick should I use for a 6 cm jar?
No diameter chart is published for the cotton wicks, and that is deliberate — the right size depends on your wax, load, dye and room as well as the jar. Test Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 against Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 in the same jar, wax and load, and keep whichever reaches the glass in two to three hours without soot. Two wick pages do state a diameter: Eco Candle Wicks Loose for "2 inch diameters" and Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made for candles "exceeding 8 cm".
How do I know when a wick is too big?
Watch four signs, not the pool alone: a tall, restless flame; soot on the glass; a mushroomed carbon head at the tip; and a pool that deepens rather than widens once it has reached the wall. A hot pool also drives volatile top notes off early, so the candle smells sharp for half an hour and hollow afterwards. Trim to 1/4 inch before every burn first — the Candle Wick Trimmer page states that rule — because an untrimmed wick imitates an oversized one.
Do wooden wicks give a stronger hot throw than cotton wicks?
No CSI page claims that, and we will not either. A wooden wick presents a wide, flat flame rather than a round one — a different way of feeding heat into the wax, which may open a given jar's pool better or worse than cotton. The honest answer is a side-by-side test in your own jar, which is why the ladder here has three arms. Cost belongs in the decision: ₹59 per wooden wick in tens, ₹41.30 in hundreds, against ₹5.90 for a Thin (C1).
How many jars do I need to test a wick properly?
Two per wick option — one burned at day 7 and one at day 14 — so that cure cannot be mistaken for wick performance. Three options therefore need six jars, which is the ladder costed above at ₹2,410, or ₹1,772.80 for the four-jar cotton-only version. One jar per option is not a test: a single jar cannot tell you whether the difference you saw came from the wick or from the fortnight.
Is a full melt pool always the target?
A pool that reaches the wall in two to three hours and burns clean is the standard target, because that is where release area is maximised without overheating. What is not a target is a pool that gets there in forty minutes, or one that keeps deepening after reaching the glass: past the wall, extra heat adds depth and soot rather than surface, because the jar caps the area at 28.27 cm² in a 6 cm jar. If that ceiling is too small for the room, change the vessel, not the wick.
