Does Wick Size Affect Fragrance Oil Hot Throw?

Why does a small shortfall cost so much? Because area is πr². In that same 6 cm jar the outermost 5 mm of pool radius is 30.6% of the whole surface — the ring you can least afford to leave solid sits closest to the glass.
So buy the biggest wick? No. Once the pool reaches the glass the jar caps the area, and extra wick buys heat, soot and mushrooming instead of surface. The target is the standard one: a pool that reaches the wall in two to three hours and burns clean.
What does CSI publish about wick size? Very little, honestly: only two wick pages state a diameter at all — Eco Candle Wicks Loose ("designed specifically for 2 inch diameters") and Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made ("engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm"). Everything in between is a test you run.

The square law, worked in one 6 cm jar
Start with the arithmetic that makes the rest of this page obvious. The area of a circular melt pool is π × (diameter ÷ 2)². Because the diameter is squared, area climbs far faster than width: double the pool's width and you quadruple the releasing surface; lose a fifth of the width and you lose more than a third of the surface.
Every figure in this section is worked for one jar with a stated 6 cm diameter — a specification published on several CSI jars, including the Black Shiny Glass Jar with Golden Lid ("6 cm diameter, 6.5 cm height", capacity 120 gm) and the Shot Glass Jar ("Height - 8cm Diameter - 6cm", fill capacity 130 gram). Quoting the diameter next to the area is not pedantry: a pool area with no jar attached is meaningless, and it is the commonest way wick advice gets copied into the wrong candle.

Read the fourth column again, because it is the counter-intuitive one. A pool sitting 5 mm short of the glass looks almost finished to the eye, and is releasing from 69% of the available surface. In this jar the outermost 5 mm of pool radius carries 30.6% of the releasing surface — 8.64 cm² of the 28.27 cm² total. The ring most easily dismissed as "nearly there" is the one that matters most, and the only thing that opens it is a wick with enough heat output for that diameter of wax.
The bottom row is a ceiling set by the jar, not the wick: in a 6 cm jar no wick produces more than 28.27 cm² of pool, because there is no more surface to melt. The wick's job is to reach the ceiling the vessel sets; setting a ceiling that suits the room is the candle diameter question.
What CSI's wick pages actually state
Makers arrive at a wick listing expecting a sizing chart: this wick for 5 cm, that one for 7 cm. CSI's pages mostly do not provide one, and the reason is not laziness — a wick's behaviour depends on the wax's melting point, the load, the dye, the glass thickness and the temperature of the room you pour in. What the pages do give you is a short, checkable set of facts, set out here in full with nothing added.

Now look at the same question from the fragrance side, because that is where the instruction actually appears. Of the 107 CSI fragrance-oil pages, twelve mention a wick at all and seven tell you plainly to size the wick against the vessel. Verbena is the most direct: "Test wick size based on container diameter." Cinnamon says "Test wick size based on container dimensions and wax type." Palo Santo says "Wick testing is recommended based on your container and wax type." Three product pages, three versions of the same sentence: the diameter is yours to match.

The opposite mistake: a wick too big for the jar
Everything above argues for a wider pool, so the temptation is to fit the largest wick available and stop thinking. That fails, and it fails in a way that specifically damages fragrance. The reason goes back to the ceiling in the table: the pool cannot get wider than the jar. Past the point where the melt reaches the glass, the extra heat an oversized wick delivers has nowhere useful to go, so it goes into depth and temperature instead of area.
Four things follow, and a customer notices all four. The flame runs tall and restless, putting soot on the glass and a carbon head on the tip. The pool deepens, so the surface runs hotter than the recipe was designed around, which drives the light, volatile top notes off early — the candle reads sharp for half an hour and hollow afterwards, the complaint covered in why a candle smells cold but not lit. And it burns down faster, so fragrance meant to last thirty hours is spent in twenty.
There is a quieter reason to distrust the biggest wick: it hides other faults. A very hot pool masks a short cure or a poorly incorporated oil for twenty minutes, so a batch passes a quick sniff test and disappoints in a customer's living room. A correctly sized wick gives an honest reading of the recipe.
The wick is 3.4% of the candle and 100% of the pool
Here is the commercial argument in rupees. Take a 120 g candle at an 8% load — 110.4 g of wax and 9.6 g of oil — in a jar of stated 6 cm diameter, using Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599 per kg and Verbena Fragrance Oil at the 100 gm price of ₹590, or ₹5.90 per gram.

That comparison is the one to remember. Stepping a hundred candles up a cotton size costs about six candles' worth of fragrance oil and is the only change here that can double the releasing surface. The wooden wick is a genuine cost decision at ₹5,310 per hundred, which is why it belongs in a test before it belongs in a product. Raising the load — the move most makers try first — adds oil to a jar whose release area you have not yet fixed, and that arithmetic is in does adding more fragrance oil improve hot throw.
The three-wick ladder, costed
This is a protocol, not a result: below are the costs and the things to record, and the findings are whatever your own jars produce. Six jars, three wick options, two jars per option so one burns at day 7 and one at day 14. Everything except the wick is held identical — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, Verbena Fragrance Oil at 8%, the same jar of stated 6 cm diameter, the same add and pour temperatures.

Measuring a pool, and the sheet that records it
A wick test produces one number that matters — pool width in millimetres at a known time — and half a dozen that qualify it. Without a sheet the qualifying observations are gone within a week and the test has to be run again. This is the minimum set of columns, and what each one protects you from.

The last row deserves its own sentence. Olfactory fatigue is real and fast: whoever poured the candle and sat with it all evening is the least reliable judge of its throw. Score on entering a room you have been out of for fifteen minutes, and where you can, have a second person score the jars without knowing which wick is in which. That one discipline removes more false conclusions than any purchase.
What a bigger wick cannot fix
Suppose the ladder finishes, one arm reaches the glass in two and a half hours, burns clean — and the candle still reads quiet in a room. That is a useful result, because it rules the wick out. The pool is at its ceiling, the surface is as large as this jar allows, the wick has done its job, and a bigger one now makes the candle worse. What is left is a short list, each item with its own test.
Cure: a soy container candle judged at day 4 is not the candle you sell, and the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page itself asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks. Load, up to the wax's stated ceiling: Chunks state 8–13% with 10% recommended, CSI 464 states up to 10% — formulation limits published by the wax, not targets and never regulatory limits. The wax, which sets the pool's temperature as well as the ceiling, compared in does wax type affect hot throw. The oil's structure, where a base-heavy pyramid survives a cool soy pool better than an all-top-note one. And the vessel: if 28.27 cm² is not enough surface for the room, the answer is a wider candle or two candles, not a hotter wick.
The opposite is worth saying too, because makers over-correct. If your pool has never reached the glass in any burn, no cure, no new oil and no extra percent of load will rescue the candle — you are filling a room through a quarter of the available surface. Fix the geometry, then judge the fragrance.
