Shelf-life claims · evidence
A commercial shelf life is a statement of evidence. If you cannot point to the aged candles that support it, it is a guess wearing a label.
≤ last pass
the longest claim your own real-time testing can support
Quick answers — read this first
What is the basic rule? Your claim can be no longer than the last test point your formula fully passed in real-time storage, for that exact formula and pack.

Can I use the wax shelf life? No. CSI 464 and 468 state 60 months for the wax kept cool and dry. That says nothing about the fragrance in a finished candle.

Does an accelerated heat test let me claim longer? No. Heat tests compare formulas and reveal weak ones faster. They do not convert into a number of months you can print.

What should the claim promise? That the scent is at its best within the period, under stated storage. Never that it stays unchanged, and never longer than tested.
The short answer
Rule: Commercial shelf life ≤ the last real-time point the exact formula fully passed, under conditions like those you state.
Never: Copy the 60-month wax statement, a supplier’s oil guidance or a heat-test result onto a candle label.
Example: A Woody Oud candle passing day 120 but failing day 180 supports a claim of four months from manufacture.
What each figure actually supports (worked example)CSI 464 wax statement (wax onl60 monthsFirst failing candle test6 monthsLast fully passed test4 monthsSupported candle claim4 months
Only the last fully passed real-time test supports a candle claim; the wax figure describes stored wax, not a scented candle.
Straight answer
How Do I Determine a Commercial Shelf Life for Candles Without Claiming More Than My Actual Stability Testing Supports?
Work backwards from evidence. Age the exact formula — oil, lot, load, wax, wick, jar, lid — at real storage conditions, with set test points and a written pass rule. Your claim can be no longer than the last point it fully passed; if day 120 passed and day 180 did not, you may claim up to four months, not five. State the period from the manufacturing date, print that date or a batch code on every candle, and state the storage condition you tested under. Never borrow the 60-month wax shelf life stated for CSI 464 or 468, never treat a heat test as a month count, and never promise the scent stays unchanged.
One line: your shelf life ends at the last test point your candles fully passed — and starts on a date printed on the candle.

What a commercial shelf life actually is

A shelf life is not a forecast; it is a summary of tests you have already finished.

For a scented candle, “shelf life” or “best within” means something narrow: the period during which the candle, stored as you describe, still smells and performs the way you sell it. It is a quality promise about fragrance, appearance and burn — not a safety date, and not a measure of when the wax stops being wax.

That definition matters because it tells you where the number must come from. Only one source can describe how your scent behaves in your candle over time: your own aged candles of that formula. CSI’s fragrance-oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data. The 60-month shelf life stated on the CSI 464 and CSI 468 pages is about the wax in cool, dry storage. Even written guidance from a supplier about an oil in its sealed container describes the oil, not the oil inside your wax, jar and lid on your shelf.

So the honest process runs one way only: test first, read the result, then write the claim. If you begin with the number you would like to print, you will find a way to read the results to fit it.

The evidence a claim needs

1
A defined formula. Oil and lot, load as a percentage of total candle weight, wax, wick, jar, lid, cure time. A claim covers this formula and nothing else.
2
Real-time storage like the real world. Candles stored where and how your stock is stored, with a temperature record. A claim tested in an air-conditioned cupboard does not cover a warm godown.
3
Set test points with enough candles. For example day 0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180, three candles per point (suggested), so one odd jar cannot decide.
4
A pass rule written beforehand. Blind comparison against a fresh reference, hot throw from a burn pair, no new off-note, colour within your range.
5
Controls. An unscented wax candle stored alongside, and a sealed retained sample of the oil lot.
6
A record you could show someone. Dates, ratings, assessors, temperatures. If a retailer or customer asks how you know, this is the answer.

Accelerated heat ageing and temperature cycling are useful companions — they show quickly which of two formulas is weaker — but they cannot replace any part of this list. A candle that survives a week in a supervised warm cabinet has survived a week in a warm cabinet. It has not survived six months.

From test sheet to claim: a worked example

Say you make a Woody Oud candle, 200 g at 8% of total weight in CSI 464 with a lidded jar, and you want to state a shelf life. You age three candles at each of five points (suggested), plus a fresh reference from retained oil at each. The oil is 15 × 16 g = 240 g for the aged candles, bought as three 100 g samples: 3 × ₹453.12 = ₹1,359.36. References come from the retained sample of the same lot.

Evidence-to-claim sheet
Woody Oud candle, lidded, real-time storage (example results)
Test point Candles passing your rule Verdict What it supports
Day 30 3 of 3 Pass A claim up to 1 month
Day 60 3 of 3 Pass Up to 2 months
Day 90 3 of 3 Pass Up to 3 months
Day 120 3 of 3 Pass Up to 4 months
Day 180 1 of 3 Fail Nothing beyond 4 months

The supported claim here is four months from manufacture. Not five, because nothing was tested at five; not six, because six failed. Some makers go further and set the claim one test point below the last pass, to leave room for lot-to-lot variation and storage you do not control. That margin is your choice, and it is a sensible one for a first claim.

Then add the condition: “stored lidded, away from direct sunlight and heat”, matching how the test candles were kept. If your retailers store differently, the claim does not travel with the candle to their window.

When the results are not clean

Real test sheets are messier than the example. Three situations come up often, and each has a conservative reading.

Two of three pass at a point. Treat the point as not passed until you repeat it with fresh candles from the same batch. A claim built on a split result is a claim built on luck.
All pass, but assessors note a character shift. Ask whether the shifted candle is still the product described on your label. If the label says “bright bergamot” and the bergamot is gone, it fails your rule even if it smells strong.
The temperature record shows a hot spell. Good — that is information. If the candles passed through it, your claim covers similar weather. If they failed after it, note that your claim depends on cooler storage and say so.

In each case the rule is the same: when the evidence is uncertain, the claim takes the shorter reading. You can always extend a claim later; withdrawing one from candles already sold is far harder.

Making the claim usable: dates and words

A period means nothing without a start date. “Best within four months” on a candle with no date on it is decoration. Print a manufacturing date or a batch code on every candle or carton, and keep a record linking that code to the formula, the oil lot and the test that supports the claim.

Claim wording
What to print, what to avoid
Avoid Why Prefer
“Shelf life 5 years” Borrowed from the wax; untested for scent “Best enjoyed within 4 months of the date on the base”
“Fragrance lasts forever” Untestable and untrue “Store lidded, away from heat and direct sunlight”
“Smells as strong as the day it was made” Promises no change at all “Fragrance may soften gently over time; for the fullest scent, enjoy within the period shown”
No date at all The period cannot be applied Manufacturing date or batch code on every candle

Keep the wording plain. Customers do not need a chemistry lesson; they need a period, a date and a storage note that are all true.

Extending a claim, and when to shorten it

A first claim is a floor, not a ceiling. Keep retained candles from production batches and assess them at later points. When a later point passes for the same formula — and ideally for a second oil lot too — you may extend the claim to that point. Extend in steps that match your evidence, never in round numbers you have not tested.

The oil lot changes. The claim was earned by the old lot. Run at least a confirming test on the new lot before relying on the same period.
The jar, lid, wax, wick or load changes. It is a new formula. Its claim starts again from its own tests.
Complaints arrive inside the claimed period. Pull the retained candle from that batch, compare it blind with a fresh pour and, if it fails, shorten the claim.
You move stock to a hotter store. Your tested condition no longer applies. Re-test there or shorten the claim.

What to ask your supplier, and what not to borrow

Supplier information is still worth having, as background. Message CSI on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926) for the IFRA certificate, MSDS and any storage or shelf-life guidance for the specific oil and lot, and keep the reply in writing with your test records. It helps you store oil well and plan purchases. It does not set your candle’s claim; your tests do.

And let the claim limit your buying. If your Woody Oud candle is supported for four months, there is little sense in pouring a year of stock or holding a year of oil for it. CSI lists no oil pack above 1 kg; buy the 1 kg packs your next runs need, or ask for a quote, rather than chasing a bulk order your own claim cannot use.

Argue against interest
A shorter honest claim sells better over time than a longer borrowed one.
One complaint about a candle that failed inside its printed period costs more trust than a modest period ever will. Claim what you tested, and extend when you have tested more.
Write the claim from the test sheet, never the test sheet from the claim.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general fragrance-ageing practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly that CSI's oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data, treats the 60-month shelf life on the CSI 464 and 468 pages as a wax statement only, and labels every test day, cabinet temperature, candle count, reject rate or lead time as a starting point or the reader's own figure.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. No fragrance-oil pack above 1 kg is listed, so larger quantities are shown as multiples of the 1 kg price; ask for a quote rather than assuming a discount.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out a shelf life for my scented candles?
Age your exact formula in real storage conditions, assess it at set points against a fresh reference with a written pass rule, and set the shelf life no longer than the last point it fully passed. State it from the manufacturing date.
Can I put the wax’s 60-month shelf life on my candle label?
No. CSI 464 and CSI 468 state 60 months for the wax kept cool and dry. That describes the wax, not how fragrance behaves in a finished candle, so it cannot support a candle shelf life.
Can an accelerated heat test give me a candle shelf life?
No. Heating candles in a supervised, controlled cabinet helps compare formulas and expose weak ones, but it does not convert into months. Only real-time ageing at your storage conditions supports a printed period.
What should a candle best-before label say?
A period you have tested, counted from a date printed on the candle, with the storage condition you tested under, such as lidded and away from heat and sunlight. Avoid wording that promises the scent never changes.
Do I need to retest my shelf life if I change fragrance oil lot?
Run at least a confirming test before relying on the same period, because the claim was earned by the old lot. A change of oil, jar, lid, wax, wick or load makes a new formula with its own claim.
Does CSI give a shelf life for its fragrance oils?
CSI oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data. Ask on WhatsApp for written storage and shelf-life guidance for the oil and lot; use it to store oil well, not as your candle’s claim.
