How Much Wax Is Needed for 500 Candles?
Aktie
How many packs is that? For the 150 g run, 7 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — 79.5 kg for ₹40,344.60, ₹80.69 of wax per candle. One 10 kg pack covers about 62 candles at that size, a 5 kg pack about 31.
How much space does 500 candles’ worth of wax take? 79.5 kg is seven 10 kg packs plus the small ones. CSI does not publish pack dimensions, so measure one pack when it arrives rather than trusting an estimate. Store it cool, dry, sealed and out of sunlight — the CSI 464 and CSI 468 pages both state a 60-month shelf life under those conditions.
Is wax cheaper per kilo if I buy 10 kg packs? On most CSI soy grades, no. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40 per kilo at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg alike. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 and Natural Soy Pearl Wax do step down from 5 kg upward. Beyond the listed packs, bulk rates are not published — ask on WhatsApp.
Wax for 500 candles, fill size by fill size
At a hundred candles you buy wax. At five hundred you buy a delivery. The arithmetic has not changed — wax weight per candle × 500, divided by 1,000 — but three things have: the order is now measured in tens of kilos, the pack ladder matters more than the per-kilo rate, and where you put the wax when it arrives becomes a real question. This page answers the quantity, the packs and the storage. It prices wax only.
Work from your own weighed test pour, not from the number printed on the jar. CSI vessel pages state a wax fill capacity — about 150 gm on the Black Glass Jar with Black Lid, 85 g on the Golden Aluminium Tin, about 70 g on the Clear Glass Votive Jar — and fragrance is added on top of the wax weight, not inside it. A 10 g error per candle that you can live with at a hundred candles is 5 kg at five hundred, which is a whole pack you either did not order or did not need.
| Wax per candle | Wax in the candles | With 6% wastage | Packs to buy | Wax you own | Wax cost | Per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70 g | 35 kg | 37.1 kg | 3 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | 37.5 kg | ₹19,033.80 | ₹38.07 |
| 85 g | 42.5 kg | 45.05 kg | 4 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 500 g | 45.5 kg | ₹23,093.00 | ₹46.19 |
| 100 g | 50 kg | 53 kg | 5 × 10 kg + 3 × 1 kg | 53 kg | ₹26,892.20 | ₹53.78 |
| 135 g | 67.5 kg | 71.55 kg | 7 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 2 × 500 g | 72 kg | ₹36,545.40 | ₹73.09 |
| 150 g | 75 kg | 79.5 kg | 7 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | 79.5 kg | ₹40,344.60 | ₹80.69 |
| 180 g | 90 kg | 95.4 kg | 9 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 500 g | 95.5 kg | ₹48,463.00 | ₹96.93 |
| 200 g | 100 kg | 106 kg | 10 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg | 106 kg | ₹53,784.40 | ₹107.57 |
| 250 g | 125 kg | 132.5 kg | 13 × 10 kg + 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | 132.5 kg | ₹67,236.80 | ₹134.47 |
The single most useful number on the page is the last line of the diagram: one 10 kg pack is about 62 candles at a 150 g wax weight with 6% wastage allowed. That converts a wax order into a production plan without a calculator. A 5 kg pack is about 31 candles, a 1 kg pack about 6. Change the fill size and the figure changes with it — at 85 g one 10 kg pack is about 110 candles, at 250 g about 37.
Why this page assumes 6% wastage and not 8%
This page assumes 6% wastage across a 500-candle run, and that is an assumption, not measured data. CSI publishes no wastage, yield or recovery figure for any wax, and neither does anyone else who is being straight with you. The number is stated here so that you can replace it with your own, and the table below shows what it is worth if you do.
Six per cent rather than a higher figure because most of what a maker loses is fixed, not proportional. The film of wax left inside a melter and a pouring pitcher is roughly the same whether you pour five kilos through them or fifty. The two or three test candles you pour before a batch are two or three candles, not two or three per cent. Spread those fixed losses over 500 candles instead of 100 and the percentage falls on its own — which is the real economy of a larger run, and it is a smaller one than most people hope.
What goes the other way at this volume: more pours means more chances to knock a jar, a longer session means wax held hot for longer and more top-ups, and if the run is split across sizes or scents the melter is drained and refilled more often. If your 500-candle run is four scents in three sizes poured over a fortnight, assume more than 6%, not less.
| Wastage assumed | Wax needed | Buffer in candles | CSI 464 packs | Wax cost | Reads as |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | 75 kg | none | 7 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg | ₹38,055.00 | Nothing spilled, nothing scraped out, nothing rejected. Not a plan. |
| 3% | 77.25 kg | 15 candles | 7 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹39,329.80 | A single size, a single scent, one long session on a settled line. |
| 6% | 79.5 kg | 30 candles | 7 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹40,344.60 | This page’s assumption: a practised maker running 500 candles. |
| 9% | 81.75 kg | 45 candles | 8 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 2 × 500 g | ₹41,619.40 | Several sizes or scents, or a wax and vessel you have not run before. |
| 12% | 84 kg | 60 candles | 8 × 10 kg + 4 × 1 kg | ₹42,621.60 | A festive scramble: new scents, new jars, remakes and top-ups. |
Across the whole range the wax bill moves by ₹4,566.60, and between this page’s 6% and a pessimistic 12% by ₹2,277.00. Neither number will decide whether your business works. What will decide it is whether the wax runs out on the second-last pour day: the 4.5 kg that 6% adds is about 30 candles of insurance for ₹2,283.30, and a run that stops short of 500 costs far more than that in re-orders, second consignments and a missed dispatch date.
Building the order: pack ladders, stock depth and when to ask for a quote
Two grades behave very differently at this volume, and it has nothing to do with the wax. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 lists 500 g, 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg, so 79.5 kg assembles neatly into 7 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g. Eco Soy CSI 400 lists 1 kg and 5 kg only, so the same requirement is sixteen 5 kg packs — sixteen bags to open, sixteen to store, and a longer pack list to check off when the consignment arrives. Neither is better wax. One is simply easier to order five hundred candles’ worth of.
| Soy grade | Listed pack sizes | Best listed rate | Wax cost for the run | Per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco Soy CSI 400 | 1 kg and 5 kg only | ₹399.20/kg at 5 kg | ₹31,736.40 | ₹63.47 |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | 1, 5, 10 and 50 kg | ₹424.80/kg at 5 kg | ₹33,771.60 | ₹67.54 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 500 g, 1, 5 and 10 kg | ₹507.40/kg at 10 kg | ₹40,338.30 | ₹80.68 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 500 g, 1, 5 and 10 kg | ₹599.00/kg at 5 kg | ₹47,620.50 | ₹95.24 |
| Soy Pillar Wax | 500 g, 1, 5 and 10 kg | ₹600.00/kg at 10 kg | ₹47,700.00 | ₹95.40 |
| Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 | 500 g, 1, 5 and 10 kg | ₹637.00/kg at 10 kg | ₹50,641.50 | ₹101.28 |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax | 500 g and 1 kg only | ₹920.00/kg at 1 kg | ₹73,140.00 | ₹146.28 |
| Soy Butter Wax | 500 g and 1 kg only | ₹1,097.40/kg at 1 kg | ₹87,243.30 | ₹174.49 |
Two grades reward the bigger pack at this scale and it is worth naming them. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 is ₹650.00 per kilo at 1 kg and ₹637.00 at 5 kg and 10 kg — across 79.5 kg that step is worth ₹1,033.50. Natural Soy Pearl Wax is ₹450.00 at 1 kg and ₹424.80 from 5 kg upward, worth ₹2,003.40 over the same weight. Everywhere else on the CSI soy list the rate is flat, so the larger pack buys you fewer parcels and fewer bags — which at five hundred candles is worth having anyway.
Check availability before you build the order around a pack. Stock depth on the store varies by grade and by size, and a plan that depends on a specific pack being there is a plan with a single point of failure. The product page is always the authority on what is available today. Where the quantity you need is more than the listed packs cover, or where you want a repeat monthly supply, that is a bulk conversation rather than a basket — bulk pricing is not published on the store and is quoted on WhatsApp +91 7397976926.
Two real CSI reviews say plainly that delivery charges are high — one customer writes that they are “restricting me to purchase more”. That is worth taking seriously when you plan a five-hundred-candle order: the wax arithmetic is the same whether it comes in one consignment or three, but the charges are not, and they are your cost, not a CSI one. Work out the whole run’s wax before you order anything, add the wastage buffer, and place it once. If you genuinely cannot decide the final size mix yet, order the wax for the part of the run you are sure about and ask on WhatsApp what a top-up would look like.
Five hundred candles is rarely five hundred of the same candle
Most real five-hundred-candle runs are a range, not a product: a hero size, a mid size and a small one, in three or four scents, sold as singles and as gift sets. That changes the wax arithmetic in exactly one way — through the sizes — and not at all through the scents. Wax is scent-agnostic. Four fragrances in one size is the same wax order as one fragrance in one size; it is the melter that gets drained and refilled four times, not the wax that multiplies.
| Part of the range | Candles | Wax each | Wax in the candles | With 6% wastage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black Glass Jar, 150 g | 200 | 150 g | 30 kg | 31.8 kg |
| Golden Aluminium Tin, 85 g | 200 | 85 g | 17 kg | 18.02 kg |
| Clear Glass Votive, 70 g | 100 | 70 g | 7 kg | 7.42 kg |
| Whole run | 500 | — | 54 kg | 57.24 kg |
Plan the mix before you order, because it moves the total by more than the wastage assumption does. Two hundred candles moved from 150 g down to 85 g takes 13 kg out of the order — about one and a bit 10 kg packs. Makers who order first and decide the range afterwards end up with the right grade in the wrong quantity, and the only fix is a second consignment.
A second-order effect worth knowing: small candles are harder on your wastage figure, not easier. A 70 g votive holds less wax but takes the same pitcher film, the same pour, the same wick centring and the same risk of a knocked jar as a 150 g candle. Per candle the waste is smaller; per kilo of wax poured it is larger. If your range skews small, lean towards the higher end of the sensitivity table rather than the lower.
Where eighty kilos of soy wax actually goes
This is the part that catches people who scaled up from a hundred candles. 79.5 kg of wax is 7 large packs plus the small ones, and it will be in your home or studio for as long as the run takes. CSI does not publish pack dimensions or packed volume, so do not plan shelf space from a blog — including this one. Measure one 10 kg pack when it arrives and multiply. That single measurement is worth more than any estimate.
What the product pages do tell you is how to keep it. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states a shelf life of 60 months in cool, dry storage, and asks you to store it away from sunlight and moisture. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states the same 60 months and asks that packs be kept sealed. Those two instructions — cool and dry, sealed — do all the work in an Indian climate, and they are harder to follow than they look in a Delhi, Ahmedabad or Nagpur summer or a Mumbai, Kochi or Kolkata monsoon.
Heat
Summer temperatures above 40°C are normal across much of north and central India, and the top of a cupboard, a loft, a terrace store room or a metal almirah against a west wall will sit well above the room’s own temperature. Coconut-soy blends are the most sensitive on the CSI list: the Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 page states a melting point of 50–53°C, the lowest published figure of the soy grades, so a hot store is a real consideration for that wax rather than a theoretical one. Wax that has softened and re-set in the bag is not ruined, but it is no longer loose flakes, and you will be breaking it up before every melt.
Damp
Monsoon humidity is the other half. Sealed is the instruction, and the practical version is: do not decant wax into an open tub “to make it easier”, keep the original pack closed between pours, and store it off the floor. Wax does not absorb water the way a powder does, but condensation on cold flakes, damp cardboard and a humid bag are how a clean wax picks up a smell, and a smell in the wax is a problem you will only find after it is in a candle.
Consignments and consistency
General practice for any production wax, from any supplier: note which consignment each production batch came from, and run one test burn when you open a new consignment rather than assuming it will behave identically to the last. Use the older wax first. None of that is a CSI-specific caution — it is simply what a maker does who does not want to discover a difference in a customer’s living room. A Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 and an Isopropyl Alcohol Spray at ₹383.00 for cleaning jars before the pour are the two cheapest pieces of consistency insurance on a run this size.
Worked example: 500 candles for a Bengaluru corporate order
One honest caveat on that plan: it assumes the wax is the constraint, and at 500 candles it usually is not. Vessels, wicks and fragrance have their own lead times and their own pack sizes, and the cure window is the same for all of them. Wax is the easiest line to get right, which is exactly why it should not be the one you leave to the last week.
What the grade choice costs at 500 candles
Across 79.5 kg, ₹8,601.90 separates Eco Soy CSI 400 from Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, and ₹10,303.20 separates CSI 464 from Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468. Those are real sums — but divide them by 500 and they are ₹17.20 and ₹20.61 per candle respectively, which is less than most makers’ per-candle spend on the sticker they put underneath it.
So the honest guidance has not changed from smaller runs, even though the rupee figures have: choose the grade on how it behaves, not on what it costs. The stated fragrance ceilings differ — CSI 464 publishes up to 10% of wax weight, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 up to 13%, and Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish one at all, so ask on WhatsApp before planning a high load on it. The working temperatures differ. The finish differs. Any one of those will cost you more in remakes across 500 candles than the rate difference will ever save.
Where the grade choice does earn its money at this volume is in pack shape rather than rate. A grade with a 10 kg pack turns 79.5 kg into a short order; a grade that stops at 5 kg turns it into sixteen bags. If you are running 500 candles a month rather than once, that difference repeats every month, and it is worth more than the per-kilo gap between two grades that both work.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies the wax on this page and still says the unhelpful things out loud: on most CSI soy grades the 10 kg pack is the same ₹507.40 per kilo as the 1 kg pack, so buying big saves parcels rather than money; the grade you choose moves a 500-candle wax bill by less than the price of the sticker on the jar; and two of our own reviews say our delivery charges are high, which is a reason to place one consignment rather than three, not a reason to pretend otherwise.
Every figure on this page comes from live CSI stock in September 2026, taxes included, and the linked product pages remain authoritative if anything moves. The 6% wastage figure is an assumption stated by this page, not measured data — CSI publishes no wastage, yield or recovery figure for any wax — and 0%, 3%, 9% and 12% are shown alongside it. Pack dimensions and packed volume are not published, so storage space is not estimated here; measure a pack. Bulk rates beyond the listed pack sizes are not published and are quoted on WhatsApp. Shelf-life, melting-point and fragrance-load figures are as stated on each product page, and fragrance ceilings are the manufacturer’s stated formulation maximums. Outer cartons, mailers, labels, courier, electricity, labour and marketing are not CSI costs and are never estimated here.
