How to Calculate Raw Materials for 500 Wedding Return-Gift Candles
Aktie
How much fragrance oil do 500 favours need? At 8% of wax weight each favour carries 5.2 g, so the run needs 2.6 kg, or 2.73 kg with the same 5% assumption. That is three 1 kg packs of British Rose Fragrance Oil at ₹9,204.00. The wax page ceiling is 10% and the oil page gives soy up to 10%; where they differ, the lower figure governs.
What do 500 wedding favour candles cost in materials? ₹48,597.20 of CSI materials at live September 2026 prices, or ₹97.19 a favour, for a 70 g votive in a single scent with spares included. Printing, pouches, ribbon, cartons, courier and labour are not CSI costs and are not in that figure.
How many spare candles should I make for 500 favours? This page assumes 4% on counted items — 20 spare jars, wicks and stickers — and suggests holding 5 to 10 finished favours back, poured with the run rather than afterwards. The percentage is an assumption for the worked example, not measured data; raise it if the favours travel or if a decorator is unpacking them.
Start at the jar, not at the candle
A wedding return gift is a fixed object. The family has agreed a look, a size and a count, and the count almost never moves. That makes the arithmetic easier than it is for a retail range, because you are not forecasting anything — you are converting one object into grams, multiplying by a number you already know, and then converting grams into the packs a supplier actually sells. The mistakes happen in the two conversions, not in the multiplication.
Take the Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram. The product page states a 70 g fill capacity. That is the space in the glass, and the finished candle has to fit inside it — wax and fragrance oil together. CSI states fragrance loads as a percentage of wax weight, which is the convention on the wax pages: the Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page gives up to 10% of total wax weight, and the British Rose Fragrance Oil page gives soy up to 10% of total wax weight. Where a wax ceiling and an oil page range differ, the lower one governs. At a working load of 8%, a 70 g jar is 65 g of wax and 5.2 g of oil, which puts 70.2 g in the glass. It is not 70 g of wax plus 5.6 g of oil, which puts 75.6 g in a 70 g jar.
The rule is a division, not a multiplication: wax = stated capacity ÷ 1.08 at an 8% load, ÷ 1.10 at 10%, ÷ 1.06 at 6%. Over one candle the difference is invisible. Over 500 it is ₹1,268.50 of wax you did not plan to buy, and a favour that sits too close to the rim to take a lid or a pouch cleanly.
| Vessel (stated capacity) | Wax at 8% | Oil at 8% | In the jar | Wax for 500 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heart Cutout Velvet Candle Jar · 50 g | 46 g | 3.7 g | 49.7 g | 23.0 kg |
| Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram · 70 g | 65 g | 5.2 g | 70.2 g | 32.5 kg |
| Golden Aluminium Tin Container · 85 g | 79 g | 6.3 g | 85.3 g | 39.5 kg |
| Tin Containers · 135 g | 125 g | 10 g | 135 g | 62.5 kg |
The capacities in that table are the figures the product pages publish: the heart jar states 50 g of wax and 5.3 cm by 4.3 cm, the votive states a 70 g fill, the golden tin states an 85 g fill weight and the tin containers are sold as 85 gram and 135 gram variants. The gram figures in the other columns are mine, from the division above, rounded to something you can weigh on a bench scale. Nothing in that table is measured data from a laboratory; it is arithmetic you can repeat.
The five lines, and the order to calculate them
A favour candle has exactly five material lines: wax, fragrance oil, wick, the fittings that hold the wick and carry the safety text, and the vessel. Everything else on a favour — the printed name tag, the pouch, the ribbon, the box, the courier — is not a candle-making material and is not sold or priced by CSI. Keep those in a separate block from the start, because mixing them in is what makes a favour quotation impossible to check later.
500 favours: the whole order, in packs
This is the list for 500 favours in a 70 g votive, in a single scent, with both allowances applied and every quantity rounded up to a pack CSI sells. The right-hand column is what the invoice says, not what the arithmetic said.
| Line | Needed for 500 | With allowance | Packs to buy | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 32.5 kg | 34.13 kg | 3 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg | ₹17,759.00 |
| British Rose Fragrance Oil | 2.6 kg | 2.73 kg | 3 × 1 kg | ₹9,204.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 500 | 520 | 500-pack + 20-pack | ₹3,068.00 |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 500 | 520 | 13 sheets of 40 | ₹1,300.00 |
| Candle Care Stickers Roll | 500 | 520 | 1 roll of 1,000 | ₹699.00 |
| Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram | 500 | 520 | 52 packs of 10 | ₹16,567.20 |
| CSI materials, 500 favours | — | — | — | ₹48,597.20 |
| Per favour | — | — | — | ₹97.19 |
Four things are worth noticing in that column of money. The wax is the largest single line at 36.5% and the glass is barely behind it at 34.1%, so two lines carry more than seventy per cent of the order and everything else is detail. The oil is 18.9%, which is why a favour can carry a proper fragrance without the cost running away. The wicks and stickers together are 10.4%, ₹5,067.00 across the whole run, and they decide whether the candle burns properly. And the single roll of care stickers covers the run twice over, because CSI does not sell a roll of 520.
The three lines to get right
Wicks and stickers are commodity lines on a favour run: buy the pack that covers 520 and move on. The three lines below are worth a minute each, because they carry the cost, the look and the scent.
| Pack | Price | Per jar |
|---|---|---|
| Pack of 5 | ₹159.30 | ₹31.86 |
| Pack of 10 | ₹318.60 | ₹31.86 |
| 52 packs of 10 (this run) | ₹16,567.20 | ₹31.86 |
| Pack | Price | Per kg |
|---|---|---|
| 500 g | ₹260.00 | ₹520.00 |
| 1 kg | ₹507.40 | ₹507.40 |
| 5 kg | ₹2,537.00 | ₹507.40 |
| 10 kg | ₹5,074.00 | ₹507.40 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram |
|---|---|---|
| 100 gm | ₹342.20 | ₹3.42 |
| 500 gm | ₹1,593.00 | ₹3.19 |
| 1 kg | ₹3,068.00 | ₹3.07 |
Why ₹89.89 a favour becomes ₹97.19
Price the build exactly — 65 g of wax at ₹507.40/kg, 5.2 g of oil at ₹3,068.00/kg, one wick at ₹5.90, one wick sticker at ₹2.50, one care sticker at ₹0.70 and one votive at ₹31.86 — and a favour costs ₹89.89. The real order costs ₹97.19. The ₹7.30 difference is not a hidden charge; it is the two allowances plus the part of each pack you did not need. Both of those are real money that leaves your account before the first candle is poured, so a favour quotation built on ₹89.89 is short from the first line.
The good news is that most of the gap stays in your workshop as usable material rather than disappearing. Here is where it sits after the run, assuming the allowances behave exactly as assumed.
| Line | Bought | Consumed at plan | Left over | Value left |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 35 kg | 34.13 kg | 875 g | ₹443.98 |
| British Rose Fragrance Oil | 3 kg | 2.73 kg | 270 g | ₹828.36 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 520 | 500 + breakage | up to 20 | the allowance itself |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 520 | 500 + breakage | up to 20 | the allowance itself |
| Candle Care Stickers Roll | 1,000 | 520 | 480 | ₹335.52 |
| Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram | 520 | 500 + breakage | up to 20 | the allowance itself |
| Carried to the next run | — | — | — | ₹1,607.86 |
That ₹1,607.86 is not waste — it is the opening stock of your next order, and the care stickers alone will outlast two more runs. The Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page states a 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage away from sunlight and moisture, so the leftover wax keeps. The leftover oil keeps too, in a closed pack away from heat. Count it as an asset in your own books and do not let it inflate the price you quote for this wedding.
If the budget is genuinely tight, the honest lever is the wax grade rather than the pack size. Eco Soy CSI 400 is ₹399.20/kg in the 5 kg pack; seven of those cover the same 35 kg for ₹13,972.00, which is ₹3,787.00 less than the CSI 464 order, or ₹7.57 a favour. The page describes it as a single-pour container wax produced in India that needs no additives, and recommends Eco Wicks with it. Its maximum fragrance load is not published, so if you go that way, ask on WhatsApp for the load before you plan the oil quantity — and test one jar before you commit 500.
What the fill size does to the order
Change the vessel and every quantity on the list changes with it. The table below runs the same 500-favour calculation, the same wax, the same oil and the same allowances across four CSI vessels that suit a return gift. It is a quantity comparison, not a pricing exercise: what you charge for the finished favour is a separate decision.
| Vessel | Wax to buy | Oil to buy | Vessels to buy | CSI materials, 500 | Per favour |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heart Cutout Velvet Candle Jar · 50 g | 25 kg · ₹12,685.00 | 2 kg · ₹6,136.00 | 52 packs of 10 · ₹23,400.00 | ₹47,288.00 | ₹94.58 |
| Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram · 70 g | 35 kg · ₹17,759.00 | 3 kg · ₹9,204.00 | 52 packs of 10 · ₹16,567.20 | ₹48,597.20 | ₹97.19 |
| Golden Aluminium Tin Container · 85 g | 42 kg · ₹21,310.80 | 3.5 kg · ₹10,797.00 | 44 packs of 12 · ₹15,840.00 | ₹53,014.80 | ₹106.03 |
| Tin Containers 135 gram · 135 g | 66 kg · ₹33,488.40 | 5.5 kg · ₹16,933.00 | 44 packs of 12 · ₹51,089.28 | ₹1,08,418.48 | ₹216.84 |
The interesting row is the third one. The Golden Aluminium Tin Container is stated at an 85 g fill — 70% more than the heart jar’s 50 g — yet costs ₹30.00 a unit against ₹45.00, so the bigger favour comes out only ₹11.45 a favour dearer. Vessel prices do not scale with capacity, which means the cheapest favour is rarely the smallest one. Across the four rows the spread is ₹122.26 a favour, and it splits between the vessel and the wax, because those are the two lines that grow with the candle.
A 135 g tin is a different product from a favour: ₹216.84 of materials each, ₹1,08,418.48 for 500, and a run that needs 66 kg of wax rather than 35 kg. If a family asks for something that size, quote it as a gift candle and say so plainly, because the material bill is more than double. And whichever vessel you choose, the fragrance question is the same: both British Rose Fragrance Oil and Jasmine Fragrance Oil publish 0% vanillin and no discolouration in white wax, which matters when 500 ivory favours have to look identical on one table.
Spares, breakage and the ones that come back
A favour order is handled more than a retail order. The candles are poured, cured, labelled, bagged, boxed, carried to a venue, unpacked by people who are not you, and arranged on a table by a decorator in a hurry. Every one of those steps is a chance to lose a unit, and the family is not going to accept 497 favours because two jars chipped in a van and one wick drowned.
The 4% on counted items in this worked example is an assumption, and it is deliberately modest because the glass here is small and thick-walled. If the favours travel to another city, if a decorator is unpacking them, or if the vessel has a delicate cutout, take the allowance up and say so in the quotation. Every extra percentage point on this run is five favours, and five favours is ₹485.97 of materials — cheaper than one apology on the morning of a wedding.
| Where it goes | Applies to | This run assumes | On 500 favours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax left in the melter, pitcher and pot | Wax and oil | 5% (assumption) | 1.63 kg of wax, 130 g of oil |
| Jars chipped, cracked or scratched in handling | Vessels | 4% (assumption) | 20 spare jars |
| Wicks pulled crooked, set off centre or drowned | Wicks and wick stickers | 4% (assumption) | 20 spare wicks, 20 spare stickers |
| Candles pulled at final check for sinkholes or wet spots | The whole build | inside the 4% | each one costs ₹89.89 |
| Replacements the family asks for after delivery | The whole build | hold 5–10 back | poured with the run, not after it |
The last row is the one people forget. Pour the spares with the run, from the same melt and the same oil pack, not three weeks later from a different batch. A favour poured in a second batch cures separately, may take colour slightly differently and will be the one photographed next to the others. Hold five to ten finished favours back, and deliver them as a sealed box the family keeps.
Can the store supply 500 of it today?
At 50 candles a vessel line is never a question. At 500 it sometimes is, because 500 favours needs 52 packs of one jar in one consignment. The listed depth below is what the store showed in September 2026, and it moves as orders are placed — treat it as a reason to check, not as a promise. The check itself takes one WhatsApp message.
| Line | Packs needed for 520 | Pack depth listed, September 2026 | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram | 52 packs of 10 | 93 packs of 10, 77 packs of 5 | comfortable |
| Heart Cutout Velvet Candle Jar | 52 packs of 10 | 49 packs of 10, 7 packs of 5, 12 singles | the pack of 10 alone does not reach 520 — combine packs or ask first |
| Golden Aluminium Tin Container | 44 packs of 12 | 44 packs | one order would take the listed depth — confirm before promising |
| Tin Containers 135 gram | 44 packs of 12 | 94 packs | comfortable |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 10 kg | 3 packs | 96 packs of 10 kg, 78 of 5 kg | comfortable |
| British Rose Fragrance Oil 1 kg | 3 packs | 17 packs of 1 kg | fine for this run, thin for two |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 1 × 500 + 1 × 20 | 10 packs of 500, 15 of 20 | comfortable |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 13 sheets of 40 | 87 sheets | comfortable |
| Candle Care Stickers Roll | 1 roll of 1,000 | 25 rolls | comfortable |
Two practical lessons come out of that table. First, the vessel is the line to lock first on any favour order — it is the biggest share of the cost, the deepest commitment to a look, and the most likely to be thin in the exact pack you want. Second, a scent with only a handful of 1 kg packs listed is fine for one run and uncomfortable if you have two weddings in the same fortnight; if you are holding two orders, ask about depth on the oil before you agree a scent with either family.
The rows CSI cannot price for you
CSI sells candle-making materials. It does not sell — and does not publish prices for — printed labels, name tags, pouches, boxes, ribbon, cartons, courier services, labour or electricity. Those are a real and often large part of a favour, and the honest thing this page can do is count them for you and leave the money column empty. Fill it in with your own quotations before you name a price to a family.
| Row | Quantity for 500 favours | Where it comes from | Your figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printed name tag or personalised label | 520 (one per favour, including spares) | your printer | your figure |
| Pouch, box or wrap | 520 | your packaging supplier | your figure |
| Ribbon, twine or seal | 520 | your packaging supplier | your figure |
| Outer cartons for transport | your count, by how many favours a carton holds | your packaging supplier | your figure |
| Courier or transport to the venue | one or more consignments | your courier | your figure |
| Labour: pouring, wicking, cleaning, labelling, packing | your hours × your rate | you | your figure |
| Electricity or gas for melting 35 kg of wax | your units | your own bill | your figure |
| Personalisation setup: artwork, plates, proofs | per design | your printer | your figure |
| CSI materials (from the order table) | 500 favours | this page | ₹48,597.20 |
Total the page as two lines — materials from CSI, plus your own costs — and keep them separate in every document you send. When a family asks why the favour costs what it costs, a quotation that shows ₹48,597.20 of materials and a second, clearly labelled block of your own costs is a conversation. A single blended number is an argument.
One more line belongs in your own column rather than the material list: equipment. A 500-favour run is where hand-melting stops being sensible. A Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360.00, a Steel Pouring Pitcher 600 ml at ₹708.00, a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00, a Steel Wick Holder pack of 25 at ₹1,250.00 and Isopropyl Alcohol Spray 1 litre at ₹520.00 come to ₹5,192.00. That is bought once and used for every run afterwards, so it does not belong in the per-favour figure for this wedding. A Candle Making Weighing Scale at ₹354.00 is listed with only two units in stock, so if you need one, check before you plan around it.
Six ways a 500-favour calculation goes wrong
Four of these are arithmetic and two are calendar. All six are common, and all six are cheap to avoid at the list stage and expensive to fix once 500 jars are on a table.
1. Counting the candle instead of the wax
Covered above, and it is the most common single error: the jar capacity includes the fragrance. Divide by 1.08 at 8%, by 1.10 at 10%. On this run the difference is ₹1,268.50 and 500 overfilled jars.
2. Rounding down to a friendlier pack
34.13 kg is not 30 kg, and 2.73 kg is not 2.5 kg. Rounding down leaves you 4 kg of wax short in the last week, which means a second order, a second consignment and a batch of favours from a different pack. Round up, always, and treat the leftovers as the opening stock of the next run.
3. Treating the allowance as optional
Spares are the cheapest insurance on the list. Twenty spare jars and twenty spare wicks cost roughly ₹755.20 on this run. The alternative is explaining a short delivery.
4. Leaving the vessel until last
The vessel is 34.1% of this run and the line most likely to be thin in the pack you want. Choose it, check its depth, and buy it first. Wax, oil and fittings are deep lines and can follow.
5. Forgetting the cure in the calendar
The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states a minimum 48-hour cure and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing, and 14 to 21 days is standard practice for soy container candles. For a wedding that means the pour finishes about three weeks before the date, not the week of it. Work backwards from the wedding: delivery day, then packing, then cure, then pour, then the order itself.
6. Testing the fragrance after the jars arrive
A favour is small, and a small jar with the wrong wick either tunnels or runs hot. Wick sizing by diameter is not published per wick on the product pages, so the only way to know is a test burn in the exact vessel, at the exact load, after a proper cure — and the live wick guide by diameter is the right starting point. Order one pack of the vessel, one small pack of the oil and a few wicks in both C1 and C2 as soon as the booking is confirmed. That test costs a few hundred rupees and protects a ₹48,597.20 order.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells the wax, the oil, the wicks and the glass on this page, so the page has every reason to talk you into the 135 g tin at ₹216.84 a favour. It does not. For a wedding return gift the Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram at ₹97.19 is the better object and the easier consignment, and the honest lever if the budget is tight is the wax grade rather than the pack size: Eco Soy CSI 400 covers the same 35 kg for ₹3,787.00 less. Its maximum fragrance load is not published, so ask on WhatsApp before you plan the oil against it.
Every price here is live CSI stock for September 2026, inclusive of tax, and the linked product pages are always authoritative. The 5% wastage on melted material, the 4% allowance on counted items, the 5 to 10 held-back favours and the per-favour gram figures are assumptions and arithmetic stated for this worked example, not measured CSI data. Listed pack depth is what the store showed in September 2026 and moves as orders are placed. Wick sizing by diameter is not published per wick, so every wick choice here is a test-burn decision.
