How to Choose Fragrance Oil for Candle Making

What should the brief contain? Six parts. For example: "CSI 464 at 8%, 150g clear jar with golden lid, warm gourmand, retails ₹649, needed for Diwali on 8 November 2026." That single line eliminates most of a 107-scent catalogue before you spend anything.
How much does the process cost? ₹329.42 for three 15g trials, ₹2,449.04 for the six-jar test including wax, jars and wicks, and ₹3,157.04 if you also need a thermometer and a scale. Against a 500-candle run, where the oil alone can range from ₹23,788.80 to ₹45,876.
Can I skip the burn test? No. Cold sniff predicts shelf appeal; only a cured burn predicts what the customer smells at home. The two can disagree completely, which is the single most expensive surprise in candle making.
The six steps at a glance
Here is the whole method on one screen: what each step does, what it costs, what it is allowed to eliminate, and — the part most makers skip — what you must write down before you move on. If a step produces no written record it has not happened, because in six weeks you will not remember which jar had which wick.

Two things about that table are worth noticing. The first is that two of the six steps are free and they do most of the work — which is why makers who begin at step three, with an open bottle in their hand, spend more and learn less. The second is the gap between step five and step six: ₹2,449.04 against ₹3,964.80 and upward. A full test costs less than the first production kilo, which makes running it an obvious decision rather than a discipline.
Step 1 — write the brief, in one line, before you look at anything
The brief is the cheapest tool in candle making and almost nobody uses it. Six parts, one sentence, written before you open a product page. Here is the one this guide will work through:
Work the brief backwards into money before you go further. At ₹507.40 a kilo, 138g of CSI 464 is ₹70.02 of wax. The jar is ₹94.40 in a pack of ten. An Eco Candle Wick in Thin (C1) is ₹5.90. That is ₹170.32 before a single drop of fragrance — so on a ₹649 retail the fragrance budget is generous, and the brief can afford to shortlist an expensive oil if it earns the place. On a ₹399 retail it could not, and the brief would have said so.
The brief also fixes the date, and dates decide more fragrance choices than makers admit. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November. Soy containers want 14 to 21 days of cure as standard practice, and the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing. Work back from 8 November through packing, cure and a six-jar test and the selection decision has to be finished in September — which is the real reason this method exists in six costed steps rather than as a vague instruction to test more.
Steps 2 and 3 — shortlist from what the page states, then sample
Three candidates, chosen against the brief from the published specification on their own pages. They are deliberately unlike each other: one is the cheapest credible gourmand in the range, one has review evidence from a CSI customer, and one is the most expensive of the three and states the most about how it behaves in wax. Prices are live September 2026; the figure under each card is the oil inside one 150g candle at 8% — 12g — at 1 kg pricing, and the last column of each table counts 100g candles at 8% so the 15g row means something.

Step 3 is the 15g rung, and it has exactly one job: to remove a candidate on smell before you commit wax to it. Decant a few drops of each onto unmarked blotters, label them on the back, and get two people who are not you to rank them. Your own nose is compromised — you have read the pages, you know which one cost most, and you will find what you expect. Keep the ranking; it goes into the scoring sheet as one row out of ten, not as the verdict.
Step 4 — the ten-point scoring sheet
Ten rows, each scored 0 to 3, with weights you set once and then leave alone. Five rows can be filled in from the product page before you buy anything; three come from the trials; two can only come from a cured burn. A blank is scored as a blank and it counts — an oil whose page publishes no flash point is not a bad oil, but it is one you cannot document without asking, and that has a real cost when a hotel buyer sends you a questionnaire.

Rows 9 and 10 are deliberately left open, because they are the two rows that decide the winner and neither can be filled in from a website. Maximum available from rows 1 to 8 is 54 points.

Read that table the way it is meant to be read. It does not say Chocolate Fudge is the best gourmand in India. It says that against this brief, on published evidence and cost alone, Chocolate Fudge starts five points ahead of Pumpkin Spice and four ahead of Dark Vanilla — and that Dark Vanilla's lead on note structure and documentation is bought back by ₹44.17 more oil in every candle. Rows 9 and 10 are worth twelve weighted points between them, which is easily enough to overturn the order. That is the whole argument for step 5.
Step 5 — the six-jar controlled burn
Six jars, three oils, one of each burned at day 7 and one at day 14. Everything else is held identical, which is what makes the result attributable. The basket below is everything the test consumes: one kilo of wax covers all six candles with room to spare, because six 150g candles need 828g of wax.
Step 6 — scale, document, and re-qualify every new bottle
This is where the method pays for itself, because the numbers stop being per-candle and start being per-run. Below is what the same 500-candle Diwali batch costs on each of the three candidates — 500 × 150g jars at 8% needs 6 kg of fragrance oil and 69 kg of wax. The wax line is identical in all three columns, which is the point: the fragrance decision is the one that moves the number.

The gap between the cheapest and dearest column is ₹22,087.20, and every rupee of it is the fragrance decision. Note also that seven 10 kg packs give you 70 kg for a 69 kg requirement — that one kilo of headroom is your 3–5% planning allowance for spills, top-ups and the inevitable rejected jar, and it is deliberate rather than sloppy ordering. Whether 1 kg bottles are the right pack at your volume is worked through in buying 1 kg of candle fragrance oil in India.
