I Already Finalised My Wick for a 7 cm Jar — If My New Jar Is 8 cm Wide, Do I Have to Repeat the Entire Burn-Testing Process?
Aktie
Why can't I just keep the 7 cm wick? Going from 7 cm to 8 cm inside adds 30.6% to the pool area and 14.3% to the distance from wick to glass. A wick that just filled the 7 cm pool in 3 to 4 hours may now leave a ring at the glass.
How long does the retest take? In our worked schedule, about 18 days instead of about 35 for repeating everything: one pour, one cure, burns to the final third.
What does it cost? Nine 200 g retest candles in CSI 468 with Autumn as the example oil: ₹2,387.60 in purchases, or ₹2,114.20 if you still hold the wicks. Repeating the whole programme would consume more than twice the materials.

What actually changed between the 7 cm and the 8 cm jar
The retest scope follows from a simple question: which of your earlier test results depended on the jar, and which on the wax and oil? The jar changed; nothing else did. So list what the jar controls.
The pool: 30.6% more area
If 7 cm and 8 cm are inside diameters, the pool goes from 38.48 cm² to 50.27 cm² (π × r²): 30.6% more wax surface for the same flame to melt. If they are outside figures with walls of about 3.5 mm, the insides are 6.3 and 7.3 cm and the increase is 34.3%. Either way, the flame's reach to the glass rises from 3.5 cm to 4.0 cm, 14.3% further in every direction. A common rule of thumb (about one hour per 2.5 cm of width, very rough) moves the expected full-pool time from about 2.8 hours to about 3.2 hours. A wick that reached the glass at three and a half hours in the 7 cm jar has a real chance of leaving a ring in the 8 cm one. What a single 5 mm step does is worked through in the 5 mm post; this is two of them.
The candle: a different fill weight
Worked example: if your 7 cm jar held a 150 g candle and the 8 cm jar is filled to the same height, the candle grows with the area, to about 196 g, 31% more. We plan the retest at 200 g (16 g oil + 184 g wax at 8%) until the scale says otherwise. That changes grams per candle, order quantities and any net weight you print, and it has nothing to do with the wick. It is still part of the retest, because it is still the jar. The weighing method is in the fill-weight post.
The glass: a different final third
Base thickness, wall thickness and the shape near the bottom decide how heat builds as the candle burns down. None of that transfers from one jar to another. A wick that was calm to the last centimetre in the 7 cm jar has not been tested near the bottom of this one. Thick bases are covered in the thick-base post.
The retest scope: repeat, skip, fold in
| Test | For the 8 cm jar | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fill weight: water-fill and test pour | Repeat in full | The jar holds a different candle; wax, oil and label figures all follow from it |
| Wick bracket (first-burn reach) | Repeat in full | Pool area is 30.6% larger; the old winner may now fall short |
| Burns to the final third | Repeat in full | Heat near the bottom depends on this jar's glass, base and diameter |
| Headspace and lid clearance | Quick check | New rim and lid; one fitting settles it |
| Hot throw in a room | Observe, no extra candles | A larger pool can change throw; judge it during the bracket burns |
| Wet spots and adhesion | Observe, no extra candles | New glass surface; note it on the retest candles |
| Fragrance load (6/8/10% test) | Skip | A wax-and-oil decision; neither changed |
| Cure time | Skip | A property of the wax and oil; use the cure you proved |
| Wax and oil compatibility, colour, frosting | Skip | Nothing about the wax, oil or dye changed |
| Pour temperature | Skip, unless the jar says otherwise | Stays as your wax page states, unless the new jar's page states a lower hot-pour limit |
| A separate confirmation round | Fold in | Three jars per rung in the bracket already repeat the result |
Why the load test can be skipped
Your 6%, 8% and 10% trial answered a question about the oil in the wax: how much the wax takes up comfortably, how the scent reads cold and hot, whether it sweats or frosts. The jar played almost no part in it. The two-ceilings rule still governs (the lower of the wax page's and the oil page's stated maximum: 11% for Autumn in CSI 468), and nothing about the jar changes either ceiling. Keep the load you chose.
Why the cure can be skipped
Cure time is how long the wax and oil need to settle before they burn and throw as they will in a customer's home. The Autumn page does not state a cure, but many CSI oil pages (25 of 102) state 48–72 hours for soy; many soy makers wait a week or two. Whatever you proved for the 7 cm jar, use again. Do not shorten it for the retest: a bracket judged on under-cured candles can pick the wrong wick.
Why the bracket and the burn-down cannot be skipped
They are the jar. The first-burn pool depends on diameter; the final third depends on the glass. A half-test (one burn of the old wick in the new jar, and ship if it looks fine) skips exactly the part most likely to fail: a wick that reaches the glass at the top can still run hot lower down, and one that falls short at the top will tunnel. How to choose the rungs around your old winner when only the width changed is the wider-jar step-up post; this post assumes a bracket of the old winner, one step up and one step beyond.
The scoped retest, step by step
Worked example: the 7 cm winner was Eco C2 in CSI 468 at 8% with Autumn. The retest brackets it in the 8 cm jar with C2 (expected to run short now), Cotton Braided Ready Made (whose page names "exceeding 8 cm") and a double C1 (two thin wicks as the upper rung), three jars each. Your rungs may differ; the scope does not.
Time: 18 days against 35
Both schedules in the diagram use the same assumptions: a 7-day cure (substitute yours) and one burn session a day, with about a week of sessions to reach the final third. The difference is what they contain.
| Stage | Repeat everything | Scoped retest |
|---|---|---|
| Measure and fill weight | Day 0 to 1 | Day 0 to 1, bracket poured the same day |
| Load test: pour, cure, burns | Day 1 to 11 | Skipped |
| Wick bracket: cure | Day 11 to 18 | Day 1 to 8 |
| Burns 1 to 4 | Day 18 to 22 | Day 8 to 12 |
| Final third | Day 22 to 28 | Day 12 to 18 |
| Confirmation round: pour, cure, burns | Day 22 to 35 | Folded in: three jars per rung |
| Total | About 35 days, 21 candles | About 18 days, 9 candles |
The saving is almost entirely the load test and the separate confirmation round; the cure and the burn-down, which are the slow parts, stay. That is the honest shape of it: a scoped retest roughly halves the calendar, it does not reduce it to an afternoon. Anyone promising you can "just check the first burn" is skipping the final third.
What to buy for the retest
Five items, chosen on page wording, price and stock on 26 September 2026. If your 7 cm programme used a different wax or oil, keep using those; the retest only holds if they do not change.

Cost: what the scoped retest saves, and what it does not
Worked example, 200 g candles at 8% (184 g CSI 468 + 16 g Autumn), CSI live pricing on 26 September 2026; jars not included (yours are the new 8 cm jars); costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.
| Item | Needed | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made | 3 | Pack of 10 | ₹120.00 |
| Eco C2 (old winner) and Eco C1 (double rung) | 3 and 6 | 10 + 10 | ₹153.40 |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | 9 × 184 g = 1,656 g | 2 × 1 kg | ₹1,300.00 |
| Autumn Fragrance Oil (your oil) | 9 × 16 g = 144 g | 100 g + 50 g | ₹814.20 |
| Total | 9 candles | 344 g wax, 6 g oil, 18 wicks left over | ₹2,387.60 |
The oil is tight: 150 g bought, 144 g used. Weigh it straight into the wax. If you need a tenth candle, buy another 50 g (₹271.40; Autumn is ₹5.43 per gram from 50 g to 1 kg, and the 15 g is ₹6.29).
Against repeating everything
Valued at what is used rather than the packs bought, the nine retest candles consume ₹1,957.75 of wax, oil and wicks. Repeating the load test (nine more candles) and a separate confirmation round (three more) would add ₹2,621.38, for ₹4,579.13 in all. The scope avoids about 57% of the materials and about 17 days. That is the saving; it is real, but it is not the main reason to scope the retest well.
Against not retesting at all
One 200 g candle in the 8 cm jar costs ₹218.45 in materials with a Cotton Braided wick, against ₹164.28 for the 150 g candle in the 7 cm jar with C2: ₹54.17 more per candle, almost all of it wax and oil, not wick (Cotton Braided is ₹2.56 more than C2). A hundred 8 cm candles poured on the old wick put ₹21,844.80 of materials at risk before jars, and if they tunnel, the fix is melting out, re-wicking and re-pouring. What to change first when a wider jar tunnels on the old wick is the tunnelling fix-order post.
Fitting the 8 cm retest in before Diwali
Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, 43 days after these prices were checked. The scoped retest fits; the full programme, at about 35 days from the jars arriving, barely does, and leaves no time to pour. Dispatch is from Pune; confirm delivery time on WhatsApp.
| By | Days from 26 Sep | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| 28 September 2026 | 2 | Order wicks, wax and oil; have the 8 cm jars in hand |
| 1 October 2026 | 5 | Measure, water-fill, pour the nine-candle bracket |
| 8 October 2026 | 12 | Cure done; burn 1 with the control |
| 19 October 2026 | 23 | Final third reached; 8 cm wick and fill weight recorded |
| 21 October 2026 | 25 | Production materials ordered for the new fill weight |
| By 30 October 2026 | 34 | Production pour and cure |
| 8 November 2026 | 43 | Diwali |
If the retest slips, ship Diwali in the 7 cm jar you have already proven and launch the 8 cm jar for Christmas (25 December 2026).
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, wax, oil and scale named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page tells you we do not list an 8 cm jar, that a page naming "exceeding 8 cm" is not a result, and that you should not buy a 100-pack of any wick until the retest picks one. That is deliberate: the retest exists to stop a hundred candles being poured on a guess.
Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in a pick table is in stock on that date. Wick, wax and oil wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent, we say so.
The scope table and the two schedules are editorial judgement; the 7-day cure, one burn a day and the 200 g planning candle are worked-example assumptions; the 3 to 4 hour full pool, one hour per 2.5 cm of width, the 0.86 to 0.9 wax factor and stopping at about 1 cm of wax are rules of thumb or common practice.
