I Can Make a Candle for ₹150 in Raw Materials — What Other Costs Am I Forgetting Before Deciding My Selling Price?
Aktie
How much do they add? In our worked example, a ₹148.49 candle becomes a ₹324.48 order. The non-CSI figures are examples you replace with your own quotes, but the pattern holds: the forgotten costs add more than the candle.
Is ₹499 still profitable? On these numbers it leaves ₹174.52, a 35.0% margin on the selling price. That is a real business, but far from the 70.2% a materials-only view suggests. See the full stack.
Which forgotten cost is biggest? Per-order costs, led by courier. If the customer pays shipping separately, the order leaves ₹239.52 instead. The free-shipping post works through that choice.
The ₹150 candle, priced
A candle that lands near ₹150 in raw materials is a common first target, and it is achievable with CSI's value tier. Our worked candle is a 160 g fill in the 200 ml Salsa jar. That fill is illustrative: CSI does not publish the jar's fill weight, so fill one to your line with water or wax and weigh it. At an 8% load, 160 g is 12.8 g of oil and 147.2 g of wax.
| Material | Quantity | Rate | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil (100 g pack) | 12.8 g | ₹3.00/g | ₹38.40 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 147.2 g | ₹507.40/kg | ₹74.69 |
| Eco Candle Wick Thin C1 | 1 | ₹590.00 / 100 | ₹5.90 |
| 200 ml Salsa jar with golden lug cap | 1 | ₹2,950.00 / 100 | ₹29.50 |
| Raw materials | ₹148.49 |
Two choices keep this low. The oil is the cheapest per gram in CSI's range at 100 g, and the Salsa jar comes with its lid, so there is no separate lid cost to forget. Swap in a mid-range oil such as Lavender at ₹5.40 a gram and the oil line rises to ₹69.12. Swap the jar for a White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80 and you add ₹41.30, plus a lid if you want one. For the complete per-candle build-up with a lid and label, see the 200 g true-cost post.
The four forgotten layers
Every cost below is real, recurring and paid on the same orders as the candle. They are grouped by where they come from, because each layer is controlled differently. Layer one is still materials, and CSI prices most of it. Layers two to four are outside CSI's catalogue: the figures are examples to show the shape of the calculation. Replace every one with a quote from your own printer, box supplier, courier and payment provider.
Layer 1 — materials you forgot
| Cost | Per candle | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Pour-loss and test-burn allowance | ₹4.52 | 4% of oil + wax — working assumption, replace with your measured yield |
| Wick sticker | ₹2.50 | CSI: 40 for ₹100.00 |
| Tissue paper, half a sheet | ₹3.25 | CSI: 100 sheets for ₹650.00 |
| Scent testing spread over the first 300 candles | ₹1.63 | five 15 g testers, ₹488.86 ÷ 300 |
| Layer 1 | ₹11.90 |
The allowance covers the wax left in the jug and the candles you burn to check quality. Plan 3–5% extra as a working assumption, then replace it with what you measure. The wastage post shows how to measure it batch by batch, and why rejects and broken jars need counting separately. The scent-testing line is the one almost everybody misses. Before you launched, you bought testers of scents that did not make the cut. Five 15 g testers cost ₹488.86. That money was spent to create your range, so spread it over your first few hundred candles.
Layer 2 — finishing the candle
| Cost | Example per candle | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Front label | ₹8.00 | Example — replace with your quote |
| Warning / base label | ₹3.00 | Example — replace with your quote |
| Product box | ₹20.00 | Example — replace with your quote |
| Layer 2 | ₹31.00 |
Label and box costs swing more with quantity than anything CSI sells. Printed labels in a short run can cost several times the per-label price of a large run, and a rigid box can cost many times a folding carton. Get two quotes at the quantity you will actually order. Remember the warning or base label: safety information is a real cost even on a simple candle.
Layer 3 — the order, not the candle
| Cost | Example per order | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Mailer carton | ₹22.00 | Example — replace with your quote |
| Bubble wrap / void fill | ₹6.00 | Example — replace with your quote |
| Tape | ₹1.00 | Example — replace with your quote |
| Courier (if you pay it) | ₹65.00 | Example — replace with your quote |
| Payment gateway fee (example 2% of ₹499) | ₹9.98 | Example — replace with your quote |
| Layer 3 | ₹103.98 |
These costs attach to the parcel, not the candle, so they fall per candle as orders get bigger. A customer who buys two candles in one order shares one mailer, one courier charge and one roll of tape across both. The packaging-per-order post works through that effect order size by order size. The gateway fee here is an example rate applied to ₹499; check your provider's actual rate, which may differ by payment method.
Layer 4 — time and overheads
| Cost | Per candle | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Your labour (example ₹120/hour, 8 candles/hour incl. packing) | ₹15.00 | Example — replace |
| Electricity (example) | ₹1.50 | Example — replace |
| Equipment wear (₹3,599.00 of tools over 1,500 candles) | ₹2.40 | CSI tool prices ÷ candles |
| Free samples and gifts (1 in 25 candles) | ₹5.94 | Raw-material cost ÷ 25 |
| Transit breakage replacements (example 2% of orders) | ₹4.27 | Example — replace |
| Layer 4 | ₹29.11 |
Your time is the cost most home makers leave out, and it is the one that decides whether the business can ever pay you. The example assumes ₹120 an hour and eight candles an hour once you include wicking, pouring, labelling and packing. Your figures may be far from that, so time a real batch from start to finish. The tools line spreads a scale, thermometer, pouring jug and 1-litre melter (₹3,599.00 together) over 1,500 candles. Whether labour belongs inside cost or inside profit is a separate question, answered in the profit post.
The full stack for one ₹499 order
| Layer | Adds | Running total | Share of ₹499 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raw materials (CSI) | ₹148.49 | ₹148.49 | 29.8% |
| 1 · Forgotten materials | ₹11.90 | ₹160.39 | 2.4% |
| 2 · Label and box (example) | ₹31.00 | ₹191.39 | 6.2% |
| 3 · Packing, courier, fees (example) | ₹103.98 | ₹295.37 | 20.8% |
| 4 · Time and overheads (example) | ₹29.11 | ₹324.48 | 5.8% |
| Left from ₹499 | ₹174.52 | 35.0% |
On a materials-only view the candle keeps ₹350.51 of every ₹499, a 70.2% margin. On the full view it keeps ₹174.52. Both numbers are arithmetic on the same sale; one of them pays your rent. Two definitions to keep straight: gross margin is profit as a share of the selling price (₹174.52 ÷ ₹499 = 35.0%); markup is profit as a share of cost (₹174.52 ÷ ₹324.48 = 53.8%). Treat ₹499 as your price net of any GST you collect, and ask your accountant which rate applies to your product.
What the full cost does to your price
Once you have the full cost you can ask the pricing question properly. If you want the order itself to keep 50% of the selling price, you need ₹648.96, not ₹499. If you want to hold ₹499, you need to take cost out, and the stack tells you where. Courier is the biggest single example line. Charging shipping separately leaves ₹239.52 on the same order. A cheaper box or a plainer label can save more than switching to a cheaper oil.
| Change | Saving per order | Left from ₹499 |
|---|---|---|
| Customer pays shipping (courier example ₹65.00 removed) | ₹65.00 | ₹239.52 |
| Product box ₹20.00 → ₹10.00 (example) | ₹10.00 | ₹184.52 |
| Two candles per order (one mailer, void fill, tape and courier shared) | ₹47.00 | ₹221.52 |
| Oil load 8% → 7% (1.6 g less Citrus Lemon) | ₹3.99 | ₹178.51 |
| Samples 1 in 25 → 1 in 50 | ₹2.97 | ₹177.49 |
Look at the fourth row. Cutting fragrance load by a full point saves ₹3.99 on this candle, because the removed oil is replaced by wax and Citrus Lemon is already cheap. Packing and courier dwarf it. That is the most useful thing a full costing teaches: the money is rarely where you were looking. For the fragrance-load maths in detail, see the fragrance-load profit post, and for testing a price point from the top down, the ₹399 target-cost post and the ₹180-at-₹499 margin post.
Building your own cost sheet
Review the sheet every time a quote changes and at least every quarter. CSI's prices can change, and so can your courier's and your printer's. A cost sheet that was right at launch is wrong a year later if nobody updates it.
Keeping the base candle near ₹150
The raw materials are still worth getting right, because every rupee there repeats on every candle. Two value oils suit a candle built for ₹150. Both show a real saving above the 15 g size, and both keep the oil line under ₹43.78 at 12.8 g.
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Candles at 12.8 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹81.42 | ₹5.43 | 1.17 |
| 50 g | ₹170.00 | ₹3.40 | 3.91 |
| 100 g | ₹300.00 | ₹3.00 | 7.81 |
| 500 g | ₹1,420.00 | ₹2.84 | 39.06 |
| 1 kg | ₹2,832.00 | ₹2.83 | 78.12 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Candles at 12.8 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹94.40 | ₹6.29 | 1.17 |
| 50 g | ₹212.40 | ₹4.25 | 3.91 |
| 100 g | ₹342.20 | ₹3.42 | 7.81 |
| 500 g | ₹1,593.00 | ₹3.19 | 39.06 |
| 1 kg | ₹3,068.00 | ₹3.07 | 78.12 |
Once the full cost is known, the next questions are where profit is measured — answered here — and whether a smaller, cheaper candle still works after its fixed costs, covered in the affordable-candle post. If you plan to offer free shipping, read the free-shipping post before you commit.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's costing guide could stop at raw materials and make every candle look richly profitable. This one counts the costs we do not sell — labels, boxes, courier, fees, labour — because a candle business that prices without them runs out of cash, and that is bad for us too.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, jar, tissue, sticker and tool prices are from CSI's catalogue as listed for this series (wick figures as verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026). Every per-candle and per-order figure is plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals.
Label, box, mailer, void fill, tape, courier, gateway fee, labour and electricity figures are examples only, not CSI prices or market rates. Replace each with your own quote. The 160 g fill, the 4% allowance, the sampling rate and the breakage rate are working assumptions. For a materials quote with GST invoicing, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
