I Changed from Clear Glass to Frosted Glass with the Same Dimensions — Should I Confirm Thermal Behaviour Before Commercial Production?
Aktie
What changes if the dimensions are the same? Not the pool, fill or wick distance. The finish may be a coating that the flame heats, and you lose the side view you used to measure pool depth, tunnelling and soot.
What is new in the test? Top-down photos, skewer depth, wipe tests and torch checks instead of reading through glass — plus NEW lines for the coating: colour, crazing, peeling and odour after a full life.
What does it cost? Six candles with White Matte jars, Chunks and Eucalyptus Spearmint: ₹1,851.44 in CSI materials. White Matte adds ₹25.80 per candle over an example ₹45.00 clear jar. See the kit.
What a frosted finish can and cannot change
Every other post in this cluster starts with geometry: a wider pool, a thicker wall, a deeper flame. This one cannot, because your title holds the dimensions constant. With the same internal diameter — say 7.6 cm — the melt pool is 45.36 cm² in either jar, the 200 g candle stands at the same height, and the wick sits the same distance from the glass. Whatever is different about a frosted jar lives in the surface, not the shape. That makes it one of the smaller jar changes you can make — and one of the easiest to get wrong, because it quietly breaks the way you test.
| Property | Changes? | What we can say |
|---|---|---|
| Internal diameter, height, base, wall | No — if measured the same | Confirm with a caliper; "same model" in a different finish is not always the same mould |
| Melt-pool area, fill height, wick-to-glass | No | Pure geometry; follows the dimensions |
| Formula (wax, oil, load, cure) | No | Unchanged |
| How the jar holds and gives off heat | Unknown | CSI publishes no thermal data for any jar, including the White Matte; compare against a clear control |
| The finish itself under heat | Possibly | Depends how the frosting was made — see below; ask your supplier |
| What you can see from the side | Yes | Pool depth, tunnel ring, flame shape, soot — all hidden |
| How the lit candle looks to the customer | Yes | Diffused glow; a commercial, not a safety, question |
Two rows in that table decide the whole test. The first is the finish under heat. A frosted look is commonly produced in one of two ways: by roughening the glass itself (acid-etching or sandblasting), or by applying a coating to the outside of clear glass (a spray, paint or similar layer). A roughened surface is still glass. A coating is a separate material that the candle will heat many times over its life, and in general practice it is worth checking whether it discolours, softens, crazes, peels or smells when the glass is warm. Ask your jar supplier which process was used. If they do not know, treat it as a coating and test it.
The second row is what you can see. A clear jar is also a measuring instrument: you read pool depth, the tunnel ring, the flame and soot through the side without touching anything. A frosted jar takes that away. If you run your usual test and simply write down what you can see, the new jar will look as though it has fewer problems than the old one, because you cannot see them. The test has to change shape.
How to measure what you can no longer see
Every line on the usual scoring sheet can still be measured in a frosted jar; it just has to be measured from above, from inside, or against light. The clear control jar keeps its side view, so run both jars through the same top-down method as well, so that every line is compared like with like.
| Line | Clear jar (old habit) | Frosted jar method | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melt-pool diameter | Look through the side | Top-down photo with a ruler laid across the rim | Same phone height every time |
| Full melt pool reached | Pool meets glass all round | Top-down: no solid rim of wax visible at the edge | Photograph at fixed times |
| Pool depth | Read against the glass | Blunt skewer, dipped at the centre and edge, marked | Wipe and mark in the same way each burn |
| Tunnel ring after cool-down | Visible band on the glass | Top-down photo + skewer at the edge | Measure ring width in mm from above |
| Flame height | Side view | Ruler behind the flame above the rim | Same as before if the flame clears the rim |
| Soot on glass | Visible | Wipe inside above the pool with a white tissue after cool-down; score 0–3 | Use the same tissue type |
| Wick position (drifting) | Side view | Top-down photo | Centre mark on the photo |
| Wax level through the burn life | Side view | Torch held behind the glass in a dark room | Frosting often transmits enough light to see the line |
The retest matrix for clear → frosted
The series' four verdicts: KEEP (still valid), CONFIRM (short side-by-side), REPEAT (full retest), NEW (never needed before). This is the lightest matrix in the jar cluster, with one exception: the finish itself is a new material and gets its own lines.
| Test | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Oil–wax compatibility, cure, cold throw | KEEP | Formula unchanged |
| Time to full pool, pool depth, tunnel ring | CONFIRM | Same geometry; measure by the new method |
| Flame, mushrooming, soot | CONFIRM | Same wick and pool |
| Jar-side reading | CONFIRM | No thermal data for either finish; compare with the clear control |
| Hot throw | KEEP after one comparison | Same pool and formula |
| Surface after pouring and cure (adhesion, wet spots) | CONFIRM | Hidden behind frosting — check from above and with a torch |
| Full-life burn | CONFIRM — one per set | The coating sees its highest temperatures late in life |
| Coating colour, crazing, peeling after full life | NEW | Coating is a new material |
| Smell of the coating at a warm rim | NEW | A coating can carry its own odour when heated — check before throw scoring |
| Label and photographs | NEW | The lit candle looks different |
If your "same dimensions" turns out to be approximate — the frosted jar comes from a different mould with a slightly different inside — the geometry lines move from CONFIRM to the treatment in the diameter hub or the thicker-glass post. Measure first. For the general list of any jar change, see the only-the-jar post.
The protocol: six candles plus one to break
| Line | How | Worse than control / new jar means |
|---|---|---|
| Pool diameter (top-down) | Photo with ruler, fixed times | Smaller than the clear control at the same time |
| Pool depth (skewer) | Centre and edge | Deeper or shallower than control |
| Soot (wipe test) | White tissue, 0–3 | Darker than control |
| Jar-side reading | Same thermometer, same point | Higher than clear control |
| Coating after full life | Daylight, beside an unused jar | Yellowing, crazing, peeling, tackiness |
| Coating odour at the rim | Nose at the rim during late burns | Any smell not present in the clear control |
The priced test kit — and the price of the switch
The White Matte Glass Jar is CSI's matte option. We publish no thermal data for it, no internal diameter, no glass or base thickness and no fill weight, and we do not say how its finish is made — so if you are moving to it, measure it against your clear jar and ask us on WhatsApp for whatever documentation we can provide. The kit uses Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Eucalyptus Spearmint as the worked example, from listed, in-stock sizes on the 24 September 2026 pull.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| White Matte Glass Jar | 3 test + 1 spare + 1 retained | 1 × pack of 5 | ₹354.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 1,159.2 g | 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹898.00 |
| Eucalyptus Spearmint Fragrance Oil | 100.8 g | 1 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹422.44 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 6 + spares | 1 × 10 | ₹59.00 |
| Wick Centering Device | reusable | 1 × 5 | ₹118.00 |
| CSI kit total | ₹1,851.44 | ||
| Your clear control jars | 3 | from stock | — |
A finish change is also a cost change, and it is worth knowing before the test rather than after. At CSI's listed prices a 200 g candle in a White Matte jar with Chunks, Eucalyptus Spearmint at the 100 g rate and an Eco Thin C1 wick is ₹243.56 in materials (₹110.22 wax, ₹56.64 oil, ₹5.90 wick, ₹70.80 jar), before labour, packaging, freight and GST. If your clear jar costs, for example, ₹45.00 — replace with your own supplier's price — the frosted jar adds ₹25.80 per candle.
| Run size | Clear jars (example ₹45.00) | White Matte (₹70.80) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 candles | example ₹4,500.00 | ₹7,080.00 | example ₹2,580.00 |
| 500 candles | example ₹22,500.00 | ₹35,400.00 | example ₹12,900.00 |
| 1,000 candles | example ₹45,000.00 | ₹70,800.00 | example ₹25,800.00 |
| Pack | Price | Per jar |
|---|---|---|
| 5 jars | ₹354.00 | ₹70.80 |
| 10 jars (2 packs) | ₹708.00 | ₹70.80 |
| 50 jars (10 packs) | ₹3,540.00 | ₹70.80 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram |
|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹68.44 | ₹4.56 |
| 50 g | ₹212.40 | ₹4.25 |
| 100 g | ₹354.00 | ₹3.54 |
| 500 g | ₹1,652.00 | ₹3.30 |
| 1 kg | ₹3,068.00 | ₹3.07 |
Decision rule and release
No numeric jar-temperature limit is published by CSI, so the frosted jar passes on comparison: no worse than the clear control on every safety line, within your jar supplier's guidance and the fire-safety standard you work to (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US one), and a finish that is unchanged after a full life.
| Result | Decision | Action |
|---|---|---|
| All lines match the clear control; finish unchanged after full life | PASS | Release; record the finish type and supplier in the jar spec |
| Burn lines match; coating discolours, peels or smells | FAIL — finish | Reject that finish; ask for an etched/sandblasted version or another supplier |
| Jar-side reading higher than clear control | FAIL | Do not release; do not change the wick to fix a jar |
| Frosted jars measure differently from clear | RECLASSIFY | It is a geometry change — use the diameter, wall or base posts |
Record the finish as part of the jar specification — "White Matte, CSI, pack of 5, measured inside diameter …" is a better line than "white jar" — and keep one unburned candle as a retained sample. The reproducibility-record post shows the full jar record, and the change-control form post turns it into a form.
Related jar changes
Most jar changes in this cluster are geometry. If the frosted jar you are offered is also thicker-walled — common with heavier, premium-looking glass — combine this test with the thicker-glass post. If it is from a different mould with a different base, add the thicker-base post. And if you are choosing between several frosted candidates because your usual jar is out of stock, the alternative-container post includes finish as a scored line.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells the White Matte Glass Jar, and this page still will not call it a drop-in. Its dimensions, finish process and thermal behaviour are not published, so the only honest advice is to measure it against your clear jar and test it like any other frosted candidate.
Wax and oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026; the White Matte jar, wick and tool prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, with wicks rechecked 25 September 2026. The only geometry on this page is the confirmation that identical dimensions give an identical pool; the run-cost table multiplies the jar price difference.
The 200 g fill, 8% load, 5% allowance, three-candle sets, 3–4 hour cycles, 7-day cure and the ₹45.00 clear-jar price are labelled assumptions or examples. Descriptions of etched versus coated finishes are general practice, not claims about any CSI jar. CSI publishes no thermal data or safety limits.
