I Have ₹1 Lakh to Start a Candle Business and Want to Avoid Dead Inventory — Which Materials Should I Buy in Bulk and Which Should I Test in Small Packs First?
Aktie
Which lines are bulk-safe at a lakh? Wax and wicks, unconditionally. Jars, only if the jar is settled. Fragrance, only on a scent your own sales record already proves.
Am I losing a bulk discount by buying small? On CSI, almost none exists. CSI 464 is flat at ₹507.40/kg from 1kg up, and Luxury Soy Chunks' 10kg bag is ₹0.90/kg dearer than its 1kg. Across the ten oils costed below, kilograms instead of 100g bottles save 3.78% on the gram — and immobilise ₹40,578.24 to do it.
What does the plan total? ₹65,795.28 of real packs, leaving ₹34,204.72 for restocking whichever scent moves.
Fungible or specific — the only rule you need
Dead stock is not material you have not used yet — it is material that nothing you are likely to make next can absorb. So every raw material sits somewhere between fungible (any product in your range can absorb it) and specific (only one can), and nearer the specific end a bulk purchase is a bet on one decision staying right. Wax is the most fungible thing you will buy. The same Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 pours lavender, coffee and oud without modification; drop a scent next month and the wax goes into the next one. A kilogram of wax has no scent, colour or shape — it is potential, and potential does not expire. Fragrance is the most specific. A kilogram of Vanilla Bean is a kilogram of vanilla candles and nothing else; you cannot turn it into rose. If vanilla does not sell for you, ₹7,646.00 is immobilised until it does. That is how a well-intentioned first order becomes dead stock, and it happens because fragrance is the most exciting line to shop.
Jars are semi-fungible, and that is the interesting case. One jar carries every scent you own, so on fungibility it looks nearly as safe as wax. The risk is different in kind: the jar is the part the customer sees, which makes it the line a brand restyles — a taller glass, matte instead of gloss — for reasons unconnected to whether the old jar worked. So jar bulk is safe on the condition that the jar is settled: poured, cured, burned and photographed, and you are happy with all four.
Wicks are near-fungible and the question does not arise. Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) is ₹5.90 per wick at 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 — six pack sizes, one rate, so no discount to chase and no penalty for buying small. Buy comfortably more than you need: spares let you compare wicks without a second order, and CSI publishes no wick-sizing chart for any jar diameter, so your own burn record is the only authority you will have. Thick (C2) is flat too at ₹9.44, 20-piece pack and above in stock.
The bulk discount you are chasing mostly does not exist
Now the finding that removes the main reason people over-buy, and it argues squarely against our interest. Most makers commit a large budget believing quantity buys a better rate. On CSI's wax ladder it mostly does not. CSI has no 100kg pack of anything — the ladder is 500g, 1kg, 5kg and 10kg, with one exception: Natural Soy Pearl Wax also comes in 50kg at ₹21,240.00 — so 100kg is assembled from the packs that exist, and the comparison is this.
| Wax | Largest pack | 100kg via largest pack | 100kg via 1kg packs | What bulk buys you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 10kg · ₹5,074.00 | ₹50,740.00 | ₹50,740.00 | ₹0.00. Flat at ₹507.40/kg from 1kg up |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 10kg · ₹5,999.00 | ₹59,990.00 | ₹59,900.00 | The big bag is ₹90.00 dearer over 100kg |
| Soy Pillar Wax | 10kg · ₹6,000.00 | ₹60,000.00 | ₹60,000.00 | ₹0.00. Flat at ₹600.00/kg throughout |
| Eco Soy CSI 400 | 5kg · ₹1,996.00 | ₹39,920.00 | ₹39,900.00 | The 5kg is ₹20.00 dearer over 100kg |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | 50kg · ₹21,240.00 | ₹42,480.00 | ₹45,000.00 | ₹2,520.00 saved — the only real break in the range |
Fragrance behaves the same way. Across the range the kilogram saves between −₹1 and +₹499 against two 500g packs — zero to 6.7%. On Sandalwood and Woody Oud it saves exactly ₹0.00; on Jasmine the kilogram is ₹1 dearer than two 500g bottles (₹3,923.00 against ₹3,922.00). Real breaks exist — Mint Sandalwood's kilogram at ₹4,999.00 saves ₹491.00 (8.9%) against ten 100g packs at ₹5,490.00 — but they are small, uneven, and nowhere near enough to justify a kilogram of a scent you have not sold.
What ten kilograms of fragrance actually exposes
If the rate is not the reason to buy big, the bulk question was never a price question. It is a cash immobilisation question. Here is that arithmetic on ten real CSI oils, a plausible opening range.
| Oil | 100g | 1kg | ₹/g at 100g | ₹/g at 1kg | ₹/g saved |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lavender | ₹540.00 | ₹5,221.00 | ₹5.400 | ₹5.221 | ₹0.179 |
| Vanilla Bean | ₹790.00 | ₹7,646.00 | ₹7.900 | ₹7.646 | ₹0.254 |
| Roasted Coffee | ₹390.00 | ₹3,738.00 | ₹3.900 | ₹3.738 | ₹0.162 |
| Woody Oud | ₹453.12 | ₹4,531.20 | ₹4.531 | ₹4.531 | ₹0.000 |
| Sandalwood | ₹502.68 | ₹5,026.80 | ₹5.027 | ₹5.027 | ₹0.000 |
| British Rose | ₹342.20 | ₹3,068.00 | ₹3.422 | ₹3.068 | ₹0.354 |
| Jasmine | ₹430.00 | ₹3,923.00 | ₹4.300 | ₹3.923 | ₹0.377 |
| Cinnamon Vanilla | ₹483.80 | ₹4,554.80 | ₹4.838 | ₹4.555 | ₹0.283 |
| Citrus Lemon | ₹300.00 | ₹2,832.00 | ₹3.000 | ₹2.832 | ₹0.168 |
| Apple Cinnamon | ₹474.36 | ₹4,743.60 | ₹4.744 | ₹4.744 | ₹0.000 |
| Ten scents | ₹4,706.16 | ₹45,284.40 | ₹4.706 | ₹4.528 | ₹0.178 |
Read the last row twice. Ten kilograms, one per scent, is ₹45,284.40 — 45.3% of the whole lakh in one line. The same ten as 100g bottles is ₹4,706.16, and the difference, ₹40,578.24, stays in your account. What does committing it buy? ₹4.528 per gram against ₹4.706 — ₹0.178 per gram, or 3.78%, which over all ten kilograms is ₹1,777.20, and only if you use every gram. On Woody Oud, Sandalwood and Apple Cinnamon it is ₹0.00: kilogram and 100g bottle are per-gram identical.
Now the exposure, carefully, because this page cannot and does not predict which of your scents will sell, or whether any will. Nobody who sells you raw materials is in a position to know that. What we can do is state the exposure, conditional on an assumption that is yours: assume, as your own working figure, that four of your ten opening scents find no buyer in the first season. We are not saying four will, and certainly not which four. On the kilogram plan the money sitting still is four kilogram prices — ₹13,561.00 (Citrus Lemon, British Rose, Roasted Coffee, Jasmine) to ₹22,637.40 (Vanilla Bean, Lavender, Sandalwood, Apple Cinnamon), averaging ₹18,113.76. On the 100g plan it is four bottles: ₹1,462.20 to ₹2,307.04, averaging ₹1,882.46. Same assumption, same scents, same business; on the average case ₹16,231.30 more is immobilised, and the premium for that protection is 3.78% on the gram.
The worked ₹1 lakh plan, to the rupee
In packs CSI actually sells, nothing rounded and nothing invented. The production figures are yours, not ours: 200g container candles, 8% fragrance of finished weight (16g oil, 184g wax), ten opening scents, two of them already proven on your own sales record. The two named as proven below stand in for whichever two your record justifies — real prices, your choice. If none is proven yet, skip to the last section.
| Line | What | Cost | Running total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax · bulk | CSI 464, 6 × 10kg = 60kg | ₹30,444.00 | ₹30,444.00 |

| Tools | Thermometer, scale, pitcher, mixer, stirrers | ₹1,883.00 | ₹65,323.28 |
| Dye · tested small | 2 × 15ml liquid dye | ₹472.00 | ₹65,795.28 |
| Packaging, labels, cartons | Not supplied by CSI — cost elsewhere | ₹____ | — |
| Spent | All of the above | ₹65,795.28 | ₹65,795.28 |
| Held back | Restock reserve | ₹34,204.72 | ₹1,00,000.00 |
172 candles are fully scented and ready to pour, while the wax, jars and wicks stretch past them — 326 candles of wax, 200 jars, 650 wicks. That surplus is not waste, because none of it is scent-specific; it is what the reserve will spend itself on.
The denominator trap, and the samples you must keep
Write it down before you place a bulk order. Fragrance load is a percentage — of finished candle weight, or of wax weight. They are different purchases. A 200g candle at 8% of finished weight is 16g of oil and 184g of wax; at 8% of the wax it is 14.8g and 185.2g. On one candle that 1.2g goes unnoticed; on the 60kg above it does not. At 8% of finished weight, 60kg requires 60 × (0.08 ÷ 0.92) = 5.217kg of oil; at 8% of wax weight, 60 × 0.08 = 4.800kg. The gap is 417g — more than four of the 100g test bottles in this plan, about ₹1,890 at the ₹4.53 per gram average of the ten oils costed here. Neither figure is wrong; using one convention on the recipe sheet and the other on the purchase order is.
Retained samples are the second thing a maker at this scale cannot skip, and they are a purchase line, not a note: one finished candle per scent per batch, labelled, kept unburned and unsold. When a customer reports a fault six weeks after delivery, examining a candle from that batch is the only way to establish whether the batch is at fault — keep none and you cannot separate a product fault from a usage issue. Cost it: one retained 200g candle on this recipe is ₹93.36 of CSI 464 (184g at ₹0.5074/g), a ₹70.80 jar, a ₹5.90 wick, a ₹2.50 wick sticker and 16g of oil — on Lavender at kilogram pricing, ₹83.54 — giving ₹256.10. Ten of them, one per scent at each scent's own kilogram rate, come to ₹2,450.15: 2.45% of the lakh, and the cheapest insurance here. A 172-candle pour is a 162-candle sellable batch. Keep a one-page record beside each sample — wax and oil products and packs, the load with its denominator named, add and pour temperatures, stir time, jar, wick, pour and burn-test dates — and change one variable per test batch.
What we are telling you not to buy
We sell raw materials, so let us be blunt about what this page costs us. The plan deliberately leaves ₹34,204.72 of your lakh unspent, and recommends a 100g bottle rather than a kilogram on every one of the eight scents you have not proven. Both mean we sell you less today: on fragrance alone it is the difference between an order of ₹13,911.28 and one of ₹45,284.40, so we are talking ourselves out of ₹31,373.12 on a single line, because we would rather sell you 100g bottles twice than kilogram bottles once. Not generosity — a maker whose first lakh turns into nine stalled bottles does not place a second order. One more thing we would rather you did not buy yet: the 20-litre Electric Wax Melter at ₹23,600.00 is 23.6% of the whole lakh, equipment bought ahead of the work at this pour volume; the 1-litre Mini Electric Wax/Soap Melter at ₹2,360.00 is the proportionate version if melting by hand is genuinely slowing you down.
Finally, if another supplier has quoted you a 25kg carton, a 100kg slab rate, a 5kg fragrance drum or a 15% volume discount, those are their terms — judge any of them by weighing the discount against the cost of holding the stock and the chance you use it. Do not assume CSI's ladder works that way. CSI has no 25kg wax pack, no 100kg pack and no fragrance pack above 1kg, and publishes no MOQ, slab, rate card, quantity discount or credit term. Above 1kg of fragrance the honest answer is multiples of the 1kg bottle or a quote on WhatsApp, with no discount promised because none is published. More on sourcing and costing: what it actually costs to start, how much fragrance oil a business needs and the complete raw-material list.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, and this page argues against our own revenue twice. It says there is almost no bulk discount to chase on our wax ladder — CSI 464 flat at ₹507.40/kg from 1kg up, Luxury Soy Chunks' 10kg bag ₹0.90/kg dearer than its 1kg, Eco Soy CSI 400's 5kg ₹0.20/kg dearer — and it tells you to buy 100g fragrance bottles instead of kilograms on every unproven scent.
Every price, pack size and ceiling here is from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing and specification take precedence. Only in-stock variants are priced. CSI publishes no minimum order quantity, price slab, rate card, quantity discount, credit term, wastage percentage or dispatch and delivery time — none appears here, and the production figures and the four-scents-do-not-sell assumption are the reader's own, not CSI guidance. We project no sales, demand or margin.
Fragrance ceilings are formulation limits set by the wax maker, not regulatory limits. For pack availability, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation, or to confirm the current lead time, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
