Every candle needs the same oil and the same jar whatever the scent, so a balanced basket spends about the same on oil at 3 scents or 12. Width is paid for in depth per scent and in test candles — and the real waste is buying jars and oils for different candle counts.
150–165
finished candles from ₹50,000 at any width from 3 to 12 fragrances, balanced · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
More on wax and jars, or more fragrances? Neither pile needs to grow. Balanced, oil stays about 23%–26% of the budget at any width.

What does width cost? Depth and tests: 55 candles a scent at 3 scents, 13 at 12, and two test candles per scent.

Where is the real waste? Unbalanced baskets: 12 oils × 100 g with jars for 156 leaves 84 jars and their wax idle.

What does this page recommend? 6 scents × 26 candles (156 in all), ₹41,968.76 at CSI, ₹8,031.24 reserve.
The short answer
Answer: Keep the split balanced — every line bought for the same candle count — and choose width by the depth each scent needs. Moving money between the piles does not buy variety; it creates idle stock.
Proof: At 3, 6 and 12 scents the deepest balanced basket makes 165, 156 and 156 candles; saleable falls to 132 at 12 because of test candles.
Plan: 6 oils from the top of CSI's sort, CSI 464 3 × 10 kg, 160 White Matte jars, a 12-candle wick test. Reserve ₹8,031.24.

What width costs you is depth per scent and two test candles per oil — not oil money.
The deepest balanced basket at each width, with at least 15% of ₹50,000 kept back. Bars show candles per scent; the figures beneath show total candles and candles left to sell after two test candles per scent. Oils are the top of CSI's best-selling sort (Sandalwood skipped — small sizes out of stock).
Straight answer
I have ₹50,000 for raw materials — should I spend more on wax and jars or use a larger portion of the budget to build a wider fragrance collection?
Neither — keep the basket balanced, and choose the width by how deep each scent needs to be. Every candle needs the same 16 g of oil and the same jar whatever the scent, so a balanced ₹50,000 basket spends roughly the same on oil at 3 scents or 12 — between 23% and 26% of the budget — and makes 150 to 165 candles either way. Width costs depth (55 candles a scent at 3, 13 at 12) and two test candles per scent. The real waste is tilting: 12 oils × 100 g with jars for 156 leaves 84 jars idle. This page's plan: 6 scents × 26 candles in White Matte jars with CSI 464 — ₹41,968.76 at CSI, ₹8,031.24 kept back.
One line: balance first; then width is a learning decision, not a spending one.
Bought in balance, ₹50,000 makes about the same number of candles whether you launch 3 fragrances or 12 — between 150 and 165. This page's plan is 6 fragrances × 26 candles in White Matte jars with Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464: ₹41,968.76 at CSI, ₹8,031.24 kept back.
Shop fragrance oils

The short answer: neither — the split barely moves

A wider collection does not need a bigger share of the money for oil. It needs the same oil, cut into more pieces.

The question sets up a choice between two piles: wax and jars on one side, fragrance on the other. It sounds like moving money from one pile to the other buys either more candles or more variety. But every candle needs the same 16 g of oil and the same jar whatever the scent, so a balanced basket needs roughly the same grams of oil — and the same rupees — whether those grams arrive as three bottles or twelve. What changes with width is how deep each scent is, and how much you spend on testing.

The table proves it with real CSI packs. For each width it finds the deepest basket — equal candles per scent — that still leaves at least 15% of ₹50,000 as reserve, then shows where the money went.

12 13 156 132 ₹26,550.00 ₹12,513.58 25.0% ₹8,141.02

Total candles move between 150 and 165 — the wobble comes from oil prices (the fourth oil, Dark Vanilla, is ₹7.90 a gram at 100 g) and from pack rounding, not from width. The oil share stays between 23% and 26% of the budget. What falls steeply is the depth: 55 candles a scent at three scents, 13 at twelve. And every extra scent takes two test candles out of the saleable count, so twelve scents sell 132 candles against three scents' 159.

The CSI principle
Width is paid for in depth and in test candles, not in oil money. Choose width by the depth each scent needs.
The money question answers itself once the candles are balanced. The real decision is how many candles of each scent you need to learn whether it sells.

Where the money really goes wrong: unbalanced baskets

Both piles are safe on their own. The loss comes from buying one pile for a plan the other pile cannot carry.

The reader's instinct is right in one sense: you can waste ₹50,000 by tilting it. But the waste is not choosing wax-and-jars or fragrance — it is buying them for different candle counts. Here are the two common versions, priced with the same jars and wax as this page's plan (156 candles' worth).

Same jars and wax as the balanced plan · 3% pour loss · idle value at listed prices
Two ways to tilt ₹50,000 — and what sits idle
Basket Oil bought Oil ₹ Candles the oil can scent Jars and wax for Left idle
Wide and shallow: 12 oils × 100 g 1,200 g ₹5,652.28 72 (6 per scent) 156 84 jars + their wax ≈ ₹14,024.85
Deep and narrow: 3 oils × 300 g 900 g ₹3,816.60 54 156 102 jars + their wax
Balanced: 6 oils, equal candles 2,580 g ₹12,623.36 156 156 9.1 g of oil (rounding)

The wide-and-shallow basket looks like a collection — twelve scents — but 100 g of oil fills only 6 candles at 16 g plus loss, so twelve bottles fill 72 jars and leave 84 jars and their wax on the shelf. The deep-and-narrow basket makes the opposite error. Neither problem is fixed by moving money between the two piles; both are fixed by buying every line for the same candle count. The five-fragrance capacity post shows how to check that line by line before you order.

The 'I'll buy jars now and oils as I go' plan. It sounds flexible, but it locks ₹14,024.85 or more into jars and wax that cannot be sold until oils arrive, and the oils you buy later carry the same 100 g pack sizes. Fix: buy jars and wax for the candles your oils can actually scent now; buy the next batch of all three together when the first sells.

The balanced plan: 6 fragrances, 26 candles each

This page's plan uses 6 fragrances, because at that width each scent still gets 26 candles — 24 of them for sale after its two test candles. That is a labelled example threshold of at least 20 saleable per scent, enough to put each fragrance in front of a real number of customers. Pick your own threshold and read your width from the table above. The example oils are the top of CSI's best-selling sort — Lavender (1), British Rose (2), Roasted Coffee (3), Dark Vanilla (4), Blue Ocean (5), Citrus Lemon (7). Position 6, Sandalwood, is skipped: on the 4 October re-check its 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock and only the 500 g and 1 kg are buyable.

The BOM and the finished-candle count

Per candle at a working 8%: 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax, in a White Matte jar whose fill CSI does not publish — 200 g is illustrative, so weigh a test pour. CSI 464's page states a fragrance ceiling of 10%, so 8% leaves two points of headroom. The stack: 2 test candles per scent counted as whole candles, 3% pour loss on wax and oil, glass breakage covered by the spares that rounding to packs of ten leaves, then rounding to real packs.

Roasted Coffee 4 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g = 430 g 26
Dark Vanilla 4 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g = 430 g 26
Blue Ocean 4 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g = 430 g 26

Wicks 20 Thin + 10 Thick test + 140 Thin 170
Stickers 160 160
Finished candles 156 — 12 tests, 144 to sell

The oils bind at 156 — exactly what a balanced basket should look like, with every other line just above it: the jars, rounded to packs of ten, stop at 160 and leave 4 spares for breakage, and the wax would stretch to 158, a small cushion for a remelt. Rounding leaves 9.1 g of oil across all six bottles, less than one candle's worth, because each oil's need was matched to real 50 g and 100 g bottles. At 1 kg prices, CSI 464 and the jar together cost ₹164.16 per candle; oil averages ₹80.92 at this width.

Breadth without production oil
If you want a wider collection to smell without stocking it, add 15 g bottles of six more oils for test candles only — Japanese Cherry Blossom, Apple Cinnamon, Jasmine, Bergamot Amber, Woody Oud, Fresh Strawberries — for ₹611.74 from the reserve, leaving ₹7,419.50. A 15 g bottle cannot quite scent a full 200 g candle at 8% once 3% pour loss is counted (16.48 g needed), so pour each sample candle to about 182 g — a little below your fill line — or buy the 50 g bottle instead. The 5-deep-or-15-shallow post prices this across fifteen scents at ₹1 lakh.

The test stage for six scents

Two test candles per scent is the breadth tax this page keeps mentioning: twelve candles at six scents. They are worth it, because different oils can change how the same wick burns, and CSI publishes no wick-per-diameter chart and no throw data for any oil.

1
Pour twelve test candlesEach scent on an Eco Thin C1 and an Eco Thick C2. 184 g of CSI 464 and 16 g of oil each; CSI's earlier CSI 464 guidance gives melt/pour at 80–90°C — confirm on the product page.
2
Hold all production materialsWax, jars and oils are already bought; only the production wick waits.
3
Cure to one checkpointA labelled checkpoint (for example 7 days) for all twelve.
4
Burn in matched cycles3–4 hours per cycle, a commonly used working practice, with full cool-down between. Record full-pool time, pool depth, flame height, soot, mushrooming, jar warmth.
5
Choose the wick per scent if you mustIdeally one wick passes for all six. If two scents need the other wick, split the production wick order between Thin C1 and Thick C2 packs; Thick costs ₹9.44 a wick against ₹5.90, the difference from the reserve.
6
Pour production scent by scent24 jars per scent. Record oil, pour date and wick on every base.

A wick passes when it is no worse than a candle you trust on every safety line and within the jar supplier's guidance and the candle fire-safety standard you work to. CSI publishes no numeric limits, and throw is never bought with a hotter jar. The wick-sample post covers what to add when both fail.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The wider your collection, the more of our oil bottles you buy — and this page tells you width does not need more oil money. If you launched three scents instead of six, you would spend almost exactly the same with us (₹42,110.24 against ₹41,968.76) and sell 15 more candles — partly because six fewer would be test candles, partly because the cheaper three oils stretch further. Width is a learning decision, not a spending one.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A fragrance supplier has every reason to tell you a wider collection needs more oil. On our own price list, balanced, it does not — and a narrower launch would sell more candles for the same spend with us. We publish that because it is what the arithmetic says.

Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026. Wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026. Jars and wicks were re-checked 4 October 2026. Frequently asked questions

How many fragrances should I start a candle business with?
As many as you can stock to the depth you need. On ₹50,000 with 200 g candles, six scents give 24 saleable each; twelve give 11.
Does a wider fragrance range cost more to stock?
Barely, if every scent gets equal candles: the oil grams are the same. It costs more in test candles and in depth per scent.
What percentage of a candle budget should go on fragrance oil?
In this balanced basket, about 25% at six scents, with wax and jars about 53%. Your oils and jar move those figures.
How much wax and how many jars for ₹50,000 of candles?
This plan buys 3 × 10 kg of CSI 464 and 160 White Matte jars for 156 candles at 200 g (illustrative fill).
Can I test lots of fragrances without stocking them?
Yes — 15 g bottles. Six more scents at 15 g cost ₹611.74; each scents one test candle of up to about 182 g at 8% with pour loss.
Why do I have leftover jars after my first batch?
Because jars and oils were bought for different candle counts. Buy every line for the same count; 100 g of oil scents only six 200 g candles at 8%.
Balance first
Buy every line for the same candle count. Then choose your width.
CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo, White Matte jars ₹708.00 for 10, oils from ₹68.44 for 15 g and Citrus Lemon from ₹300.00 for 100 g. Tell us your width and jar and we will price the balanced basket.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax). The White Matte jar's fill is not published; 200 g is illustrative. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — up to 10%, shelf life 60 months in cool, dry storage; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperatures or shelf life published. Every width in the curve includes tools (₹1,239.00), a centering device, Thin 20 + Thick 10 test wicks, production Thin wicks and stickers, and keeps at least 15% of the budget unspent. 8% load, 3% pour loss, two test candles per scent and the 20-saleable threshold are labelled working assumptions. Best-selling positions are the collection's sort order, not sales data. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
