I Have a Finished Candle Product Idea and a Target Selling Price — How Do I Work Backwards to Determine the Raw-Material Specification and Maximum Cost per Candle?
Aktie
Why subtract the jar and wick first? They barely change with scent. Removing them first shows what wax and oil can share: ₹126.89 for a 135 g tin with an Eco C1 wick.
How do I turn that into an oil limit? Subtract the wax cost, then divide by oil grams. ₹126.89 − ₹63.02 = ₹63.87; ÷ 10.8 g = ₹5.91 per gram.
What if no oil fits? Adjust packaging, vessel, fill, oil choice and then load, in that order. If nothing works, raise the price or accept a lower margin knowingly.
Reverse the usual order: price first, specification second
Most makers design a candle and then discover what it costs. Working backwards does the opposite. You start from the price you intend to sell at, take out everything that is not a raw material, and arrive at a maximum cost per candle. Then you fill that budget in a fixed order, fixed costs first, so that the last decision, usually the fragrance, is made against a clear limit rather than a hope.
The method has six steps. The worked example that follows uses a travel candle in a 135 g tin, because tins have a known vessel price and make the arithmetic easy to follow. Every price and margin in it is the reader's own example figure unless it is a CSI price.
Worked example: a 135 g travel tin at ₹599
Fixed materials
CSI's 135 g tin containers come in packs of 12 for ₹1,161.12, which is ₹96.76 per tin (₹1,161.12 ÷ 12). An Eco C1 wick is ₹5.90. Fixed materials: ₹102.66. That leaves ₹229.55 − ₹102.66 = ₹126.89 for wax and fragrance oil together.
Wax
At an 8% load measured on total candle weight, a 135 g candle holds 10.8 g of oil and 124.2 g of wax. In Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, 124.2 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹63.02. Subtract that from ₹126.89 and the oil may cost no more than ₹63.87 for 10.8 g, or ₹5.91 per gram (₹63.87 ÷ 10.8), roughly ₹5,914 per kg.
Which oils pass the ceiling
| Fragrance oil | 1 kg price | 10.8 g costs | Fits? | Materials total | Margin after ₹40 packaging |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon | ₹2,832.00 | ₹30.59 | Yes | ₹196.27 | (₹599 − ₹236.27) ÷ ₹599 = 60.56% |
| Eucalyptus Spearmint | ₹3,068.00 | ₹33.13 | Yes | ₹198.81 | 60.13% |
| Woody Oud | ₹4,531.20 | ₹48.94 | Yes | ₹214.62 | 57.49% |
| Lavender | ₹5,221.00 | ₹56.39 | Yes | ₹222.07 | 56.25% |
| Bergamot Amber | ₹5,437.00 | ₹58.72 | Yes | ₹224.40 | 55.86% |
| Royal Oud | ₹6,400.00 | ₹69.12 | No | ₹234.80 | 54.12% |
| Dark Vanilla | ₹7,646.00 | ₹82.58 | No | ₹248.26 | 51.88% |
| White Royal Oud | ₹8,103.00 | ₹87.51 | No | ₹253.19 | 51.05% |
The idea was a fresh or herbal scent, so Eucalyptus Spearmint, Citrus Lemon and Lavender are the natural shortlist. All three clear the ceiling with room to spare. If you had wanted Dark Vanilla in this tin, the method tells you, before you buy anything, that it needs a higher price, a smaller margin or a cheaper fill.
Turning the numbers into a starting specification
Choosing Lavender for this example, the starting specification for testing is short enough to fit on one line of a formula sheet: 135 g tin, 124.2 g CSI 464, 10.8 g Lavender (8%), Eco C1 first and Eco C2 as the alternative. The Lavender page states a candle load of 6–10% and rates the oil Strong; flashpoint is not published, so add it at a moderate temperature and never at the melter's maximum.
CSI does not publish the tin's diameter, nor any wick sizing chart, so the wick is the one part of the specification the numbers cannot decide. Burn both candidates in the filled tin. Metal containers can become hot during a burn, so test on a heat-resistant surface, never leave a test unattended, and put out any candle that smokes or whose flame grows tall. If Eco C2 wins, the materials total rises by ₹3.54 to ₹225.61, still under the ₹229.55 ceiling.
Write the ceiling itself on the formula sheet, next to the specification. Six months from now, when someone proposes a new oil, a thicker tin or a nicer wick, the first question is simply whether the change still fits under ₹229.55, and the answer takes seconds instead of a fresh costing exercise. Recheck the ceiling whenever any of your own inputs move: a new packaging quote, a different channel fee or a price change. A ₹10 rise in packaging, for instance, lowers the oil limit by the same ₹10, which on 10.8 g is almost ₹0.93 per gram.
When the numbers do not work, pull levers in this order
Sometimes no oil you like fits the ceiling. Before abandoning the idea, work through the levers below, in roughly this order, because the first ones change the customer's experience least.
Buy this to test, then buy this once validated
| Stage | Item | Pack | Price | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test | CSI 464 | 1 kg | ₹507.40 | Six test tins × 124.2 g = 745.2 g |
| Test | Lavender | 100 g | ₹540.00 | 6 × 10.8 g = 64.8 g |
| Test | Tin containers 135 g | Pack of 12 | ₹1,161.12 | Six to test, six spare for a second round |
| Test | Eco C1 and Eco C2 | 20 and 10 | ₹212.40 | ₹118.00 + ₹94.40 |
| Production (120) | CSI 464 | 10 kg + 5 kg | ₹7,611.00 | 120 × 124.2 g = 14,904 g |
| Production (120) | Lavender | 1 kg + 500 g | ₹7,841.00 | 120 × 10.8 g = 1,296 g |
| Production (120) | Tin containers 135 g | 10 packs of 12 | ₹11,611.20 | ₹96.76 each |
| Production (120) | Eco C1 | 100 + 20 | ₹708.00 | ₹590.00 + ₹118.00 |
The test set costs ₹2,420.92. The 120-unit order is ₹27,771.20, slightly more than 120 × ₹222.07 because the packs leave some wax and oil over for the next batch. Your maximum cost per candle was set by your price; the shopping list simply buys the specification that fits under it.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
