non-fragrance materials removed by standardising — with 12 fewer test candles and twice the scents · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Should I standardise one jar and one wax? Yes, on a limited budget. In the same ₹15,000.00 example it cuts materials from 12 to 10, test candles from 24 to 12, and doubles the scents on offer from 3 to 6.

Does it cost more? No. In the example Plan B spends ₹14,104.83 against Plan A's ₹14,645.60 and still makes 2,295 g more finished candle, because every candle is full size and there are fewer test pours.

Which wax and jar? This page uses CSI 464 and the White Matte Glass Jar as the example. Any one container wax with one jar works; CSI publishes no data that makes one better than another — test yours.

What do I buy first? Wax, oils, jars and a two-type wick ladder. Production wicks wait for the ladder. See the order split.
The short answer
Answer: Standardise one jar and one wax and create variety through fragrance. Each extra container needs its own fill check, wick test and SKUs; each extra fragrance needs one bottle and one confirmation candle.
Numbers: Same ₹15,000.00, same 36 candles: 12 → 10 materials, 24 → 12 test candles, 3 → 6 scents, reserve ₹895.17.
Method: Weigh the fill → allowance stack (tests, rejects, loss, breakage) → round to CSI packs → buy shared materials now, production wicks after the ladder.
Same ₹15,000.00 budget, same 36 saleable candles, two ways to build a range Plan A buys variety in containers · Plan B buys it in fragrance · bars scaled within each row PLAN A · MANY CONTAINERS 4 jars · 2 waxes · 3 wick types · 3 oils Materials to stock 12 Container formats 4 Finished SKUs to label and list 12 Test candles before selling 24 Scents a customer can choose from 3 PLAN B · ONE JAR, ONE WAX 1 jar · 1 wax · 2 wick types · 6 oils Materials to stock 10 Container formats 1 Finished SKUs to label and list 6 Test candles before selling 12 Scents a customer can choose from 6 Plan A: CSI spend ₹14,645.60, reserve ₹354.40. Plan B: CSI spend ₹14,104.83, reserve ₹895.17. Standardising removes 5 non-fragrance materials and 12 test candles, and doubles the scents on the shelf.
The same example budget spent two ways. Bars are scaled within each row so the two plans can be compared line by line. Fills for the White Matte, Salsa and Yankee jars are illustrative planning figures (CSI publishes only the tin's 85 g); wick choice is decided by a ladder test, not by this chart.
Straight answer
I have a limited budget — should I standardise on one jar and one wax while creating variety through fragrance instead of buying many container styles?
Yes. On a limited budget, standardise on one jar and one wax, run one small wick test, and put the variety into fragrance. In a like-for-like example — ₹15,000.00, 36 saleable candles — a maker with four container styles, two waxes, three wick types and three oils stocks 12 materials, pours 24 test candles and offers 3 scents. A maker with one White Matte Glass Jar, CSI 464, an Eco Thin C1/Thick C2 ladder and six oils stocks 10 materials, pours 12 test candles and offers 6 scents, spending ₹14,104.83 and keeping ₹895.17 in reserve. Standardising removes 5 of 9 non-fragrance materials. The reason is not that one jar or wax is better — CSI publishes no data that says so — but that every container multiplies wick testing, part-used packs and SKUs, while every fragrance adds only one bottle and one confirmation candle.
One line: fix the jar, the wax and the wick once; let fragrance carry the variety.
The standardised plan on this page — one wax (Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464), one jar (White Matte Glass Jar), two wick types and six fragrance oils — makes 36 saleable candles plus 12 test candles for ₹14,104.83 in CSI materials and leaves ₹895.17 of a ₹15,000.00 budget in reserve. Start with the wax every candle shares: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹5,074.00 for 10 kg.

The ₹15,000.00 comparison in numbers

A customer chooses a candle by smell first. Your inventory should be built in the same order.

"Limited budget" needs a figure before it can be planned, so this page uses ₹15,000.00 as a labelled example — a common size for a first raw-material order, between the ₹10,000 starter split and the ₹20,000 collection that has to look large. Two makers spend it. Maker A builds variety the way most first launches do: four container styles, two waxes, three wick types and three popular oils. Maker B standardises: one jar, one wax, a two-wick test range and six oils. Both end up with exactly 36 candles to sell, so the comparison is like for like.

Scale + thermometer same in both plans 1 + 1 ₹708.00
CSI spend 36 saleable + 24 test candles ₹14,645.60

Read the money line carefully, because it is not the whole story. Plan B spends ₹540.77 less than Plan A and makes 2,295 g more finished candle — every Plan B candle is a full-size jar, while a third of Plan A's candles are 85 g tins and 100 g Yankee jars. Per gram of candle, standardising is clearly cheaper. But the larger differences are in the other rows: Plan B stocks 10 materials instead of 12, lists 6 SKUs instead of 12, pours 12 fewer test candles before anything can be sold, and puts twice as many scents in front of a customer.

So the straight answer to the title is yes — on a limited budget, standardise on one jar and one wax and create variety through fragrance. Not because one container or wax is better than another (CSI publishes no data that would say so), but because every extra container style multiplies three things a small launch cannot afford: the wick testing, the number of part-used packs, and the number of SKUs you have to photograph, label and keep in stock.

The CSI principle
Variety the customer can smell is cheap. Variety the customer can only see is expensive.
A new fragrance adds one bottle and one confirmation candle. A new container adds a jar pack, a wick test, possibly a wax and a whole new row of SKUs.

What standardising actually eliminates

The table counts the materials each plan has to buy, store, track and reorder. Fragrance oils are deliberately counted separately, because they are the one material where more variety is the point.

Counts from the two plans above · fragrance kept separate on purpose
Materials and decisions, plan by plan
What you stock or decide Plan A Plan B Eliminated by standardising
Jars / containers 4 1 3
Waxes 2 1 1
Wick types 3 2 1
Fragrance oils 3 6 +3 (added on purpose)
Non-fragrance materials 9 4 5 of 9 (56%)
Wax × container pairings to validate 4 1 3
Wick ladders to run 4 1 3
Test candles before the first sale 24 12 12
Finished SKUs to label, photograph and list 12 6 6
Jar fills to weigh and record 3 (tin fill is published) 1 2
Reorder points to watch 12 10 2

Standardising removes 5 of the 9 non-fragrance materials — three containers, one wax and one wick type — and with them three wick ladders and 12 test candles. It also removes something no table shows well: decisions. Each of Plan A's four formats needs its own answer to "which wick, how full, how long to cure, which box". Plan B answers those questions once, and then every new fragrance inherits the answers. The inventory-complexity post turns this count into a full launch checklist, and the 10-SKU standardisation post extends it to dyes.

Why the test count matters most
CSI does not publish wick sizes per jar diameter or fill weights for its glass jars, so every container you add needs its own weighed test pour and its own wick test. In Plan A that is 24 candles of wax, oil and jars poured and burned before a single one is sold. In Plan B it is 12. The difference, 12 candles, is real material bought with the same limited budget.

The bill of materials for the standardised range

Plan B's candle is a 200 g White Matte jar at an 8% fragrance load. The 200 g is an illustrative planning fill — not published, weigh a test pour: CSI does not publish fill weights for its glass jars (only the 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin and the 50 g Heart Cutout Velvet Jar have published fills). Pour one jar to the line you like, weigh it, and replace 200 g everywhere below with your figure before ordering. The 8% is CSI's default working load and sits inside CSI 464's 10% ceiling stated on its product page.

Per candle · CSI convention: oil = W × L, wax = W × (1 − L)

The allowances are stacked in a fixed order so that none is applied twice. All rates are labelled working assumptions — replace them with your own once you have a run or two of records.

Allowance stack · applied in this order · rates are labelled assumptions
From 36 saleable candles to quantities to buy
Step Rule Applied to Result
1 · Test candles 6 wick-ladder candles + 6 one-per-oil confirmation candles, as whole candles everything 36 + 12 = 48 candles
2 · Rejects ÷ (1 − 5%) — example reject rate wax, oil, wicks 50.53 candles' worth of consumables
3 · Pour loss × (1 + 4%) wax and oil only wax 9,668.7 g · oil 840.8 g
4 · Breakage × (1 + 2%) — example glass jars only 48 × 1.02 → 49 jars
5 · Round up cheapest in-stock CSI packs each material separately see the next section
The double count. Adding 5% for rejects, then 5% for loss, then rounding up, then adding "a bit extra to be safe" turns 48 candles of material into nearly 58. Every allowance should describe one real loss and be applied to the material it affects — rejects to consumables, pour loss to wax and oil, breakage to glass. Fix: write the stack down once, in order, and let pack rounding be the only safety margin on top. Should I buy for 105 or 110 pieces? runs the same logic on 100 candles.

Rounding to real CSI packs, with leftovers

One wax and one jar also means one set of pack sizes to learn.

CSI 464 is priced flat at ₹507.40 a kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg; only the 500 g bag is dearer (₹260.00, or ₹520.00 a kilo). The 9,669 g need lands just under 10 kg, so the cheapest cover is 1 × 10 kg at ₹5,074.00, leaving 331 g — a spare candle or two. Ten 1 kg bags cost exactly the same and are easier to keep sealed; two 5 kg bags also cost the same. The White Matte jar is listed in packs of 5 (₹354.00) and 10 (₹708.00), both ₹70.80 a jar, so 49 jars round to 50.

Japanese Cherry Blossom 227.7 g 2 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g 230 g 2.3 g ₹1,208.00
Fresh Strawberries 122.6 g 1 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g 150 g 27.4 g ₹590.00
Jasmine 122.6 g 1 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g 130 g 7.4 g ₹636.00

Orchard Pear 122.6 g 1 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g 130 g 7.4 g ₹590.04
Six oils 840.8 g ₹4,192.83

Notice the leftovers. Every oil ends the launch with a part-used bottle, because nobody can buy exactly the grams a calculation produces. In Plan B those leftovers are fragrance — the material you want to reorder or re-test anyway. In Plan A the leftovers also include part-packs of two waxes, three wick types and four jar styles, several of which only fit the one format they were bought for. Choosing packs for the minimum leftover works through that trade-off in detail.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We list more than a dozen container styles and would sell more of them if every new maker bought four. On a ₹15,000.00 budget, do not. Buy one jar you like, learn its fill and its wick, and spend the difference on fragrances. If CSI 464's flat pricing tempts you towards the 10 kg bag, note that ten 1 kg bags cost the same ₹5,074.00 — buy whichever is easier to store; there is no discount in either.

The priced shopping list — exactly ₹15,000.00

Here is Plan B as a single order. The CSI subtotal and the reserve add to the budget to the paisa. The production wick line is budgeted at the dearer outcome — if the Thick C2 wins the ladder the order is 2 × 20 Thick C2 (₹377.60); if the Thin C1 wins it is 2 × 20 Thin C1 (₹236.00) and the difference goes back to the reserve.

The reserve is not slack. It is the money for the things a first launch always discovers: a wick ladder that needs a third option, a fragrance that needs a second confirmation pour, and — most importantly — the first reorder of whichever scents sell. Keeping 6% back is a labelled working choice, not a rule; the ₹75,000 reorder-cash post argues the size of that reserve at a larger budget.

Standardising pays off again here. One jar means one lid size, one label shape and one box. Plan A would need four of each — and the Golden Aluminium Tin and the jars sold with caps (Salsa and Yankee) change the lid question for some formats but not others. These packaging lines are examples only; never treat them as prices.

Buy now, buy after the wick test

Not every line on the list should be ordered on day one. Materials shared by every candle can be bought first; the production quantity of the wick waits for the ladder to finish.

Weigh the jar fillPour one White Matte jar with plain wax to the line you like and weigh it. Replace the 200 g on this page with your figure and rerun the wax and oil lines before Order 1 if it differs by more than a few grams.
2
Pour the wick ladder in one oilThree candles with Thin C1 and three with Thick C2, all in Japanese Cherry Blossom at 8%. One oil keeps the ladder about the wick, not the scent.
3
Cure and burn in matched setsUse a labelled cure checkpoint (for example 7 days) and burn in 3–4 hour cycles with full cool-down — commonly used working practice. Record pool width and depth, flame height, soot and jar-side feel.
4
Pour one confirmation candle per oilOnce a wick passes, pour one candle in each of the other five oils with that wick. You are checking that no oil changes the burn enough to fail, not re-running the ladder.
5
Place Order 2Buy production wicks of the winning type only. The other type's remaining wicks become your spares for the next ladder.
6
Pour the 36 and keep recordsWeigh what wax and oil are left after the pour. The real loss replaces the 4% assumption next time.

Making six scents look like a collection

Standardising the container does not mean a dull shelf. Variety a customer notices can come from places that cost little or nothing in raw materials: the scent itself, the name, the label colour, and the way the range is grouped. Six oils drawn from different families — floral, fruity, fresh, woody — read as a deliberate collection, not as six random bottles.

Plan B's six oils · prices per gram at the pack sizes bought · no throw or demand data is published for any oil
Six families from one jar
Oil Family (descriptive) Per gram at 100 g Oil cost per 200 g candle at 8%
Japanese Cherry Blossom Floral ₹5.00 ₹80.00
Fresh Strawberries Fruity ₹3.78 ₹60.42
Jasmine Floral ₹4.30 ₹68.80
Woody Oud Woody ₹4.53 ₹72.50
Cucumber Green Tea Fresh ₹3.53 ₹56.45
Orchard Pear Fruity ₹3.80 ₹60.80

The oil is the only per-candle cost that changes across the range, and even the dearest of these six adds only a few rupees per candle over the cheapest. That is the economic heart of the standardise-and-vary approach: the expensive, slow-to-learn parts (jar, wax, wick) are fixed, and the cheap, fast-to-change part (fragrance) carries the variety. When a seventh scent is wanted, it costs one bottle and one confirmation candle. The ₹20,000 "look large" post adds colour and a mini size on top of the same idea, and the five-fragrance shared-materials post applies it to a named collection.

Learn one jar properly. Then let the fragrance shelf do the talking.
— CandleMakingSuppliesIndia

When a second container is worth adding

Standardising is a launch strategy, not a permanent rule. A second format earns its place when it does something the first cannot: a lower price point, a gift set, a sample size. The test is whether that format will sell enough to justify its own wick ladder and its own SKUs.

Decision guide · thresholds are yours to set
Should you add a format?
Signal What it suggests Cheapest way to add it
Customers ask for a smaller, cheaper candle A mini format Golden Aluminium Tin — the only CSI container with a published fill (85 g), 12 for ₹360.00
Gift buyers want a set A second size in the same wax Same CSI 464, same oils — only a new wick ladder
A scent has reordered twice Depth in that scent before breadth in jars Reorder the oil first
You want a lidded jar for shipping A jar sold with a cap 200 ml Salsa jar or Yankee 130 ml — fills not published, weigh

Whichever format comes second, keep the wax. A second container with the same wax needs a wick ladder; a second container with a different wax needs a wick ladder and a whole new set of pour notes. The 50 g / 200 g / 500 g plan shows how to bring three sizes into one procurement plan once you are ready.

Oil 1 · also carries the wick ladder
Japanese Cherry Blossom Fragrance Oil
Poured in all six ladder candles plus its own seven, so it is the largest of the six oil lines. It is ₹5.40 a gram at 50 g, ₹5.00 at 100 g and ₹6.93 at 15 g, so the 100 g bottle does the work and 15 g bottles top it up.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We list many container styles and would sell more if every new maker bought four. This page tells a limited-budget maker to buy one, because the arithmetic of testing and part-used packs says so.

Wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026; oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026; wick and jar packs are from the CSI listing re-checked 4 October 2026; the scale and thermometer are Blog 760 figures, verified 10 September 2026. Per-candle splits, allowance stacks, pack rounding, leftovers and the budget total are computed and shown to two decimals so you can check them.

The ₹15,000.00 budget, the 200 g, 160 g and 100 g planning fills, the 8% load, the 5% reject, 4% pour-loss and 2% breakage rates, the wick-ladder size and the packaging figures are labelled examples and working assumptions. CSI publishes no jar fills (except the 85 g tin and 50 g velvet jar), wick-size charts, throw or demand data. Frequently asked questions

Is it better to sell candles in one jar style or many?
For a first launch on a limited budget, one. Every jar style needs its own fill check, wick test and SKUs. Add a second format when customers ask for a different price point or a gift set.
How many fragrances should a small candle business start with?
Enough to look like a range, few enough to sell through. This page's example uses six at 6 candles each; 5 versus 15 fragrances argues the depth-versus-breadth question at ₹1 lakh.
Can I use one wax for all my candles?
Yes, if it passes your tests in every jar and oil you use. CSI 464's page states up to 10% fragrance; Chunks and CSI 468 state up to 13%. Confirm with a confirmation candle per oil.
How many wick sizes do I need for one jar?
Buy two types for a ladder and keep the one that passes. CSI publishes no wick-size-per-diameter chart, so the ladder decides.
What is the cheapest candle container at CSI?
Per unit, the Golden Aluminium Tin is ₹30.00 (12 for ₹360.00) with a published 85 g fill; Salsa jars with caps are ₹29.50 each in packs of 50 or 100. Cheapest per gram of candle depends on the fill you weigh.
How do I make a small candle range look bigger?
Group scents into families, give them strong names and one consistent label system. The ₹20,000 look-large post adds colour and a mini size without new materials.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load is a share of finished weight (oil = W × L; 200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax). CSI does not publish fill weights for its glass jars (only the 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin and the 50 g Heart Cutout Velvet Jar have published fills); the 200 g, 160 g and 100 g fills are illustrative planning figures. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl — no melt point, pour temperature, fragrance ceiling or shelf life published. Reject 5%, pour loss 4%, breakage 2%, wick-ladder size, cure checkpoints, burn cycles and packaging figures are labelled examples. CSI publishes no throw, demand or wick-sizing data. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
