I’m Spending Too Much on Candle Raw Materials but Don’t Know Where — How Do I Calculate Cost per Gram and Cost per Finished Candle for Every Ingredient?
Aktie
And cost per finished candle? Landed price per gram × grams one candle uses, for every line, then add them. A 200 g candle at 8% uses 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax (load as % of total weight). With a worked jar, label and dye dose, our worksheet candle comes to ₹297.73 landed: ₹272.83 of raw materials and ₹24.90 of packaging.
Where does the money hide? In the pack size of the oil (16 g of Woody Oud is ₹99.43 at the 15 g price and ₹72.50 at 1 kg), in freight (a worked ₹450.00 delivery charge adds ₹8.18 a candle, almost as much as the wick), and in the lines nobody writes down: dye, tape, the label.
What pays at 300 candles a month? Buying Woody Oud in 100 g bottles instead of 50 g saves ₹14.35 a candle, ₹51,655.68 a year. Buying it in 1 kg instead of 100 g saves nothing. Consolidating restocks into one delivery instead of two saves ₹29,448.00 a year if your delivery charge is per order (check your invoices).
- Straight answer: the two formulas
- Step 1: cost per gram or per unit, from the pack you buy
- Step 2: landed cost, freight and GST
- Step 3: grams and units per candle
- Step 4: the worksheet for one finished candle
- What pack size is worth, line by line
- When a cheaper per-gram figure means a test
- The products in the worksheet
- Frequently asked questions
Step 1: cost per gram or per unit, from the pack you buy
For anything weighed (wax, oil, dye if you weigh it), divide the pack price by the pack's grams. For anything counted (wicks, jars, lids, labels, boxes), divide by the units. For anything measured by length (tape, wick roll), divide by metres. Use two decimals for rupees and keep four for very cheap per-gram figures like wax, or the rounding swamps the answer. On CSI's live list:
| Item | Smallest pack | Per unit | Largest pack | Per unit | Shape of the ladder |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woody Oud | 15 g ₹93.22 | ₹6.21/g | 1 kg ₹4,531.20 | ₹4.53/g | steep to 100 g, flat after |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 500 g ₹299.00 | 0.5980/g | 10 kg ₹5,999.00 | 0.5999/g | flat (500 g fractionally cheapest) |
| Candle Dye Liquid Black | 15 ml ₹236.00 | ₹15.73/ml | 50 ml ₹472.00 | ₹9.44/ml | falls in the bigger bottle |
| Eco C2 wick | 10 ₹94.40 | ₹9.44 | 1,000 ₹9,440.00 | ₹9.44 | flat |
| Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm | 50 ₹1,121.00 | ₹22.42 | 100 ₹2,242.00 | ₹22.42 | flat |
| Craft Paper Tape | 50 m ₹236.00 | ₹4.72/m | 200 m ₹826.00 | ₹4.13/m | falls on the big roll |
Step 2: landed cost, freight and GST
Two things sit between a list price and your cost per gram. Delivery. CSI dispatches from Pune and does not publish delivery charges; the figure on your invoice is the one to use. GST. We do not state here whether a listed price includes GST; use what your invoice shows. If you are registered and can claim the input tax credit, that GST is recoverable and stays out of your cost per gram; if you cannot, it is a cost and goes in. Your accountant decides which applies to you; this is not tax advice.
Freight has to be shared across the items in an order. Take a worked-example restock: Woody Oud 1 kg, Chunks 10 kg, Eco C2 100, Black dye 50 ml, ₹11,946.20 of goods, with a ₹450.00 delivery charge on the invoice (worked example; use yours). There are two common ways to share it:
| Line | List cost per candle | Freight by weight | Freight by value | Landed per gram (by weight) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax, 184 g | ₹110.38 | ₹7.53 | ₹4.16 | 0.6408 |
| Oil, 16 g | ₹72.50 | ₹0.65 | ₹2.73 | 4.5721 |
| Wick | ₹9.44 | negligible weight | ₹0.36 | — |
| Dye, 0.3 ml | ₹2.83 | negligible weight | ₹0.11 | — |
| Freight per candle | ₹8.18 | ₹7.36 |
The totals are similar; the split is not. By value, the expensive oil carries most of the delivery charge; by weight, the heavy wax does, because ten of the eleven kilos in the box are wax. Couriers commonly bill on actual or volumetric weight, so allocating by weight usually tells you more about which ingredient is really expensive to bring in (a judgement; check your courier's terms). Either way, freight here is ₹8.18 a candle, 87% of the wick line, ₹29,448.00 a year at 300 candles a month: a line, not a rounding error. A full landed-cost comparison between wax suppliers is the landed wax cost post.
Step 3: grams and units per candle
Wax and oil: CSI quotes load as a percentage of total candle weight: grams of oil = candle weight × load, grams of wax = the rest. A 200 g candle at 8% is 16 g + 184 g. If you measure 8% "of the wax" instead, the same 200 g candle carries about 14.8 g of oil, so say which basis your sheet uses and stick to it; the conversion is in the optimum-dosage post. Woody Oud's page states "candles (6-10%)"; the Chunks page states "up to 13%". Your load comes from your own burn test, not from either page.
Dye: you dose in drops but buy in ml. Count how many drops of your dye fill 1 ml from your own dropper (20 in our worked example; droppers vary), then ml per candle = drops ÷ drops per ml: 6 drops = 0.30 ml = ₹2.83 from the 50 ml bottle. If you weigh dye instead, use grams and the bottle's grams. Wick: one per candle, or two for a double-wick jar; a pre-tabbed Eco C2 includes its tab. Jar and lid: one each, or one line if they are sold together. Label, box: one each. Tape: measure a sealed box (0.6 m in our example).
Step 4: the worksheet for one finished candle
Here is the whole candle, landed. Wax and oil carry freight by weight from the worked restock; wick and dye carry none (negligible weight); jar, lid and label are worked-example "own supplier" figures; box and tape are CSI list prices. Percentages are rounded to one place and sum to 100.0%.
| Line | Used per candle | Landed per unit | ₹ per candle | % of total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 184 g | 0.6408 a gram landed (list ₹0.60 + freight) | ₹117.91 | 39.6% |
| Fragrance: Woody Oud | 16 g | 4.5721 a gram landed (list ₹4.53 + freight) | ₹73.15 | 24.6% |
| Jar with lid (worked example) | 1 | your supplier, worked example | ₹64.00 | 21.5% |
| Wick: Eco C2, tab included | 1 | ₹9.44 a wick | ₹9.44 | 3.2% |
| Label (worked example) | 1 | your printer, worked example | ₹5.50 | 1.8% |
| Dye: Candle Dye Liquid Black | 6 drops = 0.30 ml | ₹9.44 a ml (50 ml) | ₹2.83 | 1.0% |
| Box: Corrugated 11 x 11 x 8 cm | 1 | ₹22.42 a box | ₹22.42 | 7.5% |
| Tape: paper tape, 0.6 m | 0.6 m | ₹4.13 a metre (200 m) | ₹2.48 | 0.8% |
| Raw materials subtotal | wax, oil, jar, wick, label, dye | ₹272.83 | ||
| Packaging subtotal | box, tape | ₹24.90 | ||
| Total, landed | ₹1.49 per gram of candle | ₹297.73 | 100.0% | |
At list prices, before freight, the same sheet totals ₹289.55; freight adds the difference. Notice what the sheet already tells you before any ranking: the two weighed lines (wax 39.6%, oil 24.6%) and the jar (21.5%) are where the rupees are; dye (1.0%) and tape (0.8%) are honest rows that will never be the answer. Ranking and the Pareto view are the ranking post; deciding which line to chase is the ₹50-per-unit gap table; the hub's order of attack is the cluster hub.
What pack size is worth, line by line
With the sheet built, the per-gram ladders answer a practical question: which pack should each line be priced at, and is moving up a size worth anything? Worked example: 300 candles a month.
| Line | Step | Per candle | Per year | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woody Oud | 50 g → 100 g | ₹14.35 | ₹51,655.68 | Real: do it |
| Woody Oud | 100 g → 1 kg | no saving | no saving | Buy the kilo only for convenience |
| Chunks wax | 1 kg → 10 kg | no saving (the 10 kg is ₹9.00 dearer than ten 1 kg) | no saving | Choose by freight and handling |
| Eco C2 | 10 → 1,000 | no saving | no saving | Buy what testing and a month need |
| Black dye | 15 ml → 50 ml | ₹1.89 | ₹6,796.80 | Real, small |
| Paper tape | 50 m → 200 m | ₹0.35 | ₹1,274.40 | Real, small |
| Corrugated box | 50 → 100 | no saving | no saving | Buy 50 |
| Freight | two deliveries → one | ₹8.18 | ₹29,448.00 | Real if your charge is per order |
At 300 candles a month you use 4,800 g of Woody Oud (₹21,749.76 of cash at the kilo price) and 55,200 g of wax, about 5.52 ten-kilo bags. The money in this table is in two places: getting off small oil bottles, and not paying for two deliveries where one would do. Neither needs a burn test, so there is no test cost to recover: each pays back on the first order, and the only price is cash on the shelf (a month of Woody Oud is the same ₹21,749.76 whether it sits in 100 g bottles or a kilo).
When a cheaper per-gram figure means a test
A worksheet will tempt you to swap a line for something cheaper per gram. Sort the temptation first. Same product, different pack (Woody Oud 50 g → 100 g, dye 15 ml → 50 ml): a purchasing change; smell or colour-check the new lot against a retained sample and move on. Different product (another wax, another oud, another dye, chips instead of liquid) or different amount (a lower load, fewer drops): a formulation change, tested one variable at a time on several candles burned to the end. The method lives in the change-control series: testing cheaper alternatives without risking a bestseller, liquid dye to dye chips, and for a cheaper wax the cheaper-wax revalidation post. Comparing two oils on what each costs at the load it needs is cost per finished candle, not per kilo.
The products in the worksheet
Five CSI items priced in the sheet, chosen on page statements, ladder shape and stock on 4 October 2026. CSI publishes no throw or burn data, so nothing here is ranked on performance. Candle counts use 184 g of wax, 16 g of oil, 0.30 ml of dye and 0.6 m of tape.

Skip for this decision: Woody Oud above 100 g "for the discount" (there is none per gram), the 10 kg Chunks "for the discount" (it costs more than ten 1 kg bags), the box 100-pack (same per box), and the out-of-stock Black Candle Dye Liquid listing.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wax, oil, dye, wicks, box and tape priced here and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that our 10 kg wax costs more than ten 1 kg bags, that our Woody Oud kilo costs the same per gram as our 100 g bottle, that our wick packs are flat per wick, and that freight, which we do not set out here, can cost you more per candle than the dye and tape combined.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack and every size of the Black Candle Dye Liquid listing are out of stock on that date and are flagged; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured (wick dimensions, dye dosage, delivery charges), we say so.
The ₹450.00 delivery charge, the jar ₹64.00, label ₹5.50, 6 drops per candle, 20 drops per ml, 0.6 m of tape and 300 candles a month are labelled worked examples. Non-price figures: the candle is the series default, 200 g at 8% of total weight (16 g oil + 184 g wax), a labelled assumption. The ₹450.00 delivery charge, its allocation over 11 kg, the jar ₹64.00, label ₹5.50, 6 drops of dye per candle, 20 drops per ml, 0.6 m of tape per box and 300 candles a month are worked examples, not CSI figures; CSI publishes no delivery charges. Wax ceiling as the Chunks page states (up to 13%); Woody Oud's page states candles 6-10%: formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Costs exclude labour and any unrecoverable GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
