I’m Using a 7 cm Jar with 8% Rose Fragrance and the Candle Reaches a Full Melt Pool Very Quickly — Should I Test One Wick Size Smaller?
Aktie
What does "one size smaller" mean with CSI wicks? If you are on Eco C2, it means Eco C1. CSI lists no sized, tabbed wick between them. If you are already on C1, there is no smaller tabbed CSI wick at all.
What is the test? Three candles on your current wick and three on one rung down, everything else identical: 12 g of rose + 138 g of wax in each 150 g candle. Six candles, 72 g of oil.
When do I take the smaller wick? Our rule: if it reaches the glass all round by burn 2 or 3 and then passes the full life to about 1 cm left. Both conditions; either one alone is not enough.
How fast is "very quickly" in a 7 cm jar?
"Very quickly" means different things to different makers, so start by timing it. Light the candle in still air, check the pool every 15 minutes, and write down the minute the liquid meets the glass all round. Do it on burns 1, 2 and 3, because later burns usually pool faster than the first: the candle is no longer cold right through.
Then compare against the benchmark most makers use, a commonly cited rule of thumb and not CSI data: about one hour of burning per 2.5 cm of jar width. For the 150 g jars CSI lists at 7 cm outer rim, the inside is about 6.3 cm on our 0.35 cm wall assumption, which the rule turns into about 2.5 hours (151 minutes); on the listed 7 cm it is about 2.8 hours. Half of the smaller figure is about 76 minutes. Another common rule expects a full pool within about 3–4 hours of a first burn.
| Full pool reached (burns 2–3) | Against the rule of thumb | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Under about 76 minutes | Less than half | Run the step-down pair below |
| About 76–151 minutes | Faster than the rule, not dramatically | No step-down test needed for speed alone; watch flame, soot and the lower third |
| About 151 minutes to 3–4 hours | Around the rule | Normal; see the edge-at-three-hours post if it feels slow |
| Never all round by burn 3 | Slow | The opposite problem; see the catch-up rule |
Two warnings. Warm rooms, a fan, a relit candle that was still soft, or a shallow fill all make a pool faster without the wick changing; a checklist for those is in the 8 cm full-pool-in-45-minutes post. And a fast pool with a calm flame, no soot and a pool no deeper than about 1 cm may simply be a well-matched wick in a small jar; fast is a reason to test, not a fault.
One size smaller, in CSI rungs
CSI's ready-made wicks are Eco Candle Wicks in Thin (C1) and Thick (C2), and Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made, whose page describes it as "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". There are also cut-to-length options (braided rolls, Eco Candle Wicks Loose) and one wooden wick with no widths to step between. None of the C1 or C2 text we captured states a size, a width or a jar range.
| You are on | One size smaller at CSI | Honest note |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton Braided | Eco C2 | Its page describes it for candles over 8 cm; in a 7 cm jar a fast pool on it is not surprising. Step to C2 and bracket |
| Eco C2 | Eco C1 | The step this page costs. No sized, tabbed wick between |
| Eco C1 | No smaller sized, tabbed CSI wick | The untabbed Eco Loose page says "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters" (about 5 cm); that bottom-of-range problem is the 6 cm big-flame post |
| Another supplier's wick | Unknown | We cannot map other brands' sizes to C1/C2 with confidence; bracket your wick against C1 and C2 and let the candles place it |
Because the steps are coarse, a one-rung move at CSI may be bigger than a one-size move in a long wick series. That cuts both ways: C1 may cure a fast pool with room to spare, or it may overshoot into a ring. The pair below is designed to show which, and the question of how many rungs you must test before production is the adjacent-sizes post.
Why rose may run faster than your other oils
Many makers find that lighter florals and herbals burn more easily than dense vanilla, coffee, oud or sandalwood oils, which are commonly linked to smaller flames and carbon build-up. That is a tendency from experience, not measured CSI data, and it varies oil to oil. The practical consequence is simple: if you picked your wick with a heavier oil in the same jar and then poured rose, a fast pool is the expected direction.
The British Rose Fragrance Oil page describes "fresh, dewy rose petals with subtle green undertones and a soft floral finish" and states "candles (up to 10% soy, up to 6% paraffin)". At 8% you are below its top, and inside CSI 464's "up to 10%". The text we captured gives no vanillin figure, cure time or wick advice for it, so treat anything more specific about how it burns as unknown until your candles tell you.
One consequence for a range: if the same 7 cm jar holds several scents, rose may end up on a different wick from your vanilla. That is normal, and it is the reason makers group oils into wick families rather than forcing one wick across everything.
The step-down pair: design and cost
Pour six candles from one melt: three on your current wick (C2 in this worked example) as the control, three on one rung down (C1). Hold everything else: CSI 464 from one bag, British Rose at 8% of total weight, jars from one batch, 150 g fill, pour at 80–85°C (the 150 g jar pages state "Safe for hot-pour up to 85°C"; CSI 464's pour range is 80–90°C, and the lower limit governs), same stir, same cure, same room. Label bases C2-a to C1-c.
| Item | Size bought | Used | Cost of what is used |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose Fragrance Oil | 100 g, ₹342.20 (₹3.42/g) | 72 g (6 × 12 g; 28 g left) | ₹246.38 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1 kg, ₹507.40 (₹0.51/g) | 828 g (6 × 138 g; 172 g left) | ₹420.13 |
| Pink Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) | Pack of 10, ₹1,070.00 | 6 jars (4 spare) | ₹642.00 |
| Eco C1 (step down) | 20 wicks, ₹118.00 (10-pack out of stock) | 3 wicks (17 spare) | ₹17.70 |
| Eco C2 (control) | 10 wicks, ₹94.40 | 3 wicks (7 spare) | ₹28.32 |
| Materials consumed | 6 candles | ₹1,354.53 |
Per candle that is ₹227.53 on C2 and ₹223.99 on C1: ₹41.06 of rose, the wax, ₹107.00 of jar and the wick. From nothing the cash outlay is ₹2,132.00; if you already own the wax, rose, jars and C2, it is ₹118.00 for the C1 pack. Costs are worked examples and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. In clear 150 g jars the six jars would cost ₹566.40 instead of ₹642.00.
What to log, every burn
When to take the smaller wick
The rule, stated as our judgement: take the smaller wick if it reaches the glass all round by burn 2 or 3 in at least two of its three candles, and then passes the full life. Passing the full life means the pool stays about 0.5–1 cm deep through the lower third, the trimmed flame stays in a practical range, there is no heavy soot or carbon cap, and the flame keeps its distance from the glass down to about 1 cm left.
| C1 by burn 3 | C1 through full life | Decision | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meets the glass all round | Passes | Take C1 | Covers the surface, runs cooler in the lower third, costs ₹3.54 less a candle |
| Meets the glass | Weakens or drowns low in the jar | Keep C2 | The jar narrows from rim to base (about 15% less surface on our wall assumption), yet C1 still fails low: it is short on heat for this candle |
| Ring of 2 mm or more persists | — | Keep C2; judge it on heat, not speed | Fast was C2 being adequate; carry C2 through full life and watch the lower third |
| Ring persists | C2 also runs hot low in the jar | Between two rungs | No sized CSI wick between C1 and C2; see the honest note above |
Why insist on the lower third when the question was about speed at the top? Because heat builds as a candle burns down: the glass above the pool absorbs heat and the pool can deepen. A wick that pools fast at the top is the kind more likely to run hot near the base, and the base is also where a too-small wick can drown. The 150 g jar pages give a 7 cm rim and about 6.5 cm base, so the surface shrinks as you go down (31.17 cm² at the rim to 26.42 cm² near the base on our 0.35 cm wall), which usually makes a wick look bigger late in the burn. How a deep late pool reads is the deep-pool-near-the-bottom post; how far down to burn before approving is the acceptance-gates post.
If your concern is really the glass getting very hot rather than the pool being quick, that is a different trade-off, handled in the strong-throw, hot-glass post. The full-life calendar for a 150 g, 7 cm candle is the full-life post.
What to buy, and what to skip
Five items for the pair, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 29 September 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing is ranked on burn results. Oil candle counts are per 150 g candle at 12 g (8%) and 15 g (10%).

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, oil, jars and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that the clear jar is the cheaper and better test jar, that CSI has no wick between C1 and C2, and that you should not buy rose in bulk until the wick passes.
Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026, and stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged; every other size shown is in stock. Wick, jar, load and temperature wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so, and where a page contradicts itself (the pink jar's "clear glass" line) we say that too.
The speed bands, the step-down rule, the 0.35 cm wall and the minutes in the diagram are our judgement or worked examples; melt-pool times, depths and flame heights are commonly cited rules of thumb; the idea that lighter florals burn more easily is a tendency, and CSI publishes no wick-performance data.
