A 100-candle order is not five of your usual batches. The allowances change, the pack sizes change, and the money you spend is not the money the order consumes. This page works one real order end to end: 100 candles of 200 g, 8% fragrance, priced from CSI's in-stock packs.
₹30,407.00
oil, wax, wicks, jars and centering devices for 100 sellable 200 g candles plus 4 test candles · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much wax and oil do 100 candles of 200 g need? At 8%, each candle is 16 g oil + 184 g wax. For 100 sellable candles plus 4 test candles and a 5% allowance you need 1,747.2 g of oil and 20.09 kg of wax.

What do I actually buy? Bergamot Amber: 1 × 1 kg (₹5,437.00) + 1 × 500 g (₹2,718.00) + 2 × 100 g (₹560.00) + 1 × 50 g (₹280.00) = ₹9,555.00. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks: 2 × 10 kg (₹5,999.00) + 1 × 500 g (₹299.00) = ₹12,297.00. 110 Eco Thin C1 wicks and 110 White Matte jars. Total ₹30,407.00.

Can I just multiply my 20-candle shopping list by five? No. Five of your usual 20-candle lists cost ₹29,100.20 — less than the ₹30,407.00 order list, but only because it has no test candles, no allowance and no spares. Add those and it runs short of oil, wax, wicks and jars, and its oil costs ₹5.73 a gram against ₹5.46. See why ×5 is the wrong list.

Which number goes into the quote? What the order consumes, per sellable candle, plus your own labour and packaging. Materials outlay per sellable candle is ₹304.07; the leftover oil and wax (₹259.55) stays in stock for the next job. See building the quote.
The short answer
Per candle: 200 g at 8%: 16 g oil + 184 g wax + 1 wick + 1 jar. Material cost ₹273.91 at 1 kg oil and wax rates, before labour, packaging, freight and GST.
Order totals: 104 units (100 sold + 4 tests) + 5% → 1,747.2 g oil, 20.09 kg wax, 108 wicks, 106 jars.
Packs: Oil 1 × 1 kg (₹5,437.00) + 1 × 500 g (₹2,718.00) + 2 × 100 g (₹560.00) + 1 × 50 g (₹280.00) · wax 2 × 10 kg (₹5,999.00) + 1 × 500 g (₹299.00) · wicks 1 × 100 (₹590.00) + 1 × 10 (₹59.00) · jars 22 × pack of 5. Total ₹30,407.00.
From a 100-candle inquiry to a priced material list — the four numbers in order 1 · Per candle 16 g oil + 184 g wax 1 wick · 1 jar 2 · × candles 104 units 100 sold + 4 test 3 · + allowance 5% oil and wax + spare jars, wicks 4 · Round to packs ₹30,407.00 cash to spend → → → Oil 1.75 kg · wax 20.5 kg · 110 wicks · 110 jars — bought for ₹30,407.00, of which ₹259.55 is oil and wax left over Quote from step 3 (what the order consumes). Pay for step 4 (what the packs cost). They are not the same number. 200 g candle · 8% load · Bergamot Amber · Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · Eco Thin C1 · White Matte Glass Jar
The same four steps work for any order size. Steps 1–3 are geometry and arithmetic: they tell you what the order consumes. Step 4 is shopping: it tells you what you pay. The gap between the two, here ₹259.55 of oil and wax, is stock you keep, not a cost of this order.
Straight answer
I received an inquiry for 100 candles but normally make only 20 at a time — how should I calculate raw materials before quoting?
Start from one candle, not from your usual shopping list. A 200 g candle at an 8% fragrance load is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax, one wick and one jar. Multiply by the candles you will actually pour: 100 for the customer plus a few test and approval candles (we use 4), so 104 units. Add a labelled allowance for pour loss and test burns — plan 3–5% extra; we use 5% — and a couple of spare jars and wicks. That gives 1,747.2 g of oil and 20.09 kg of wax. Only then round up to real packs: with Bergamot Amber and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks the order costs ₹30,407.00 in materials, and — unlike five copies of your usual 20-candle list (₹29,100.20) — that figure already carries the test candles, allowance and spares the order needs. Quote from what the order consumes, not from the packs: the ₹259.55 of oil and wax left over is stock for your next job. Then add your own labour, labels and boxes, which are not CSI prices. The rest of the cluster takes the same method to 500 custom candles and 1,000 corporate candles.
One line: one candle × units × allowance, then round to packs — never the other way round.
The whole 100-candle order, priced: Bergamot Amber 1 × 1 kg (₹5,437.00) + 1 × 500 g (₹2,718.00) + 2 × 100 g (₹560.00) + 1 × 50 g (₹280.00) = ₹9,555.00; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 2 × 10 kg (₹5,999.00) + 1 × 500 g (₹299.00) = ₹12,297.00; Eco Thin C1 wicks 1 × 100 (₹590.00) + 1 × 10 (₹59.00) = ₹649.00; White Matte Glass Jars 22 packs of 5 = ₹7,788.00; one Wick Centering Device pack of 5 = ₹118.00. Total ₹30,407.00.

Why five of your usual batches is the wrong list

Your 20-candle list is tuned for 20 candles. Multiply it by five and you inherit its rounding five times — and none of the allowances a 100-candle order needs.

Most makers who pour 20 at a time have a shopping list they no longer think about: a few 100 g bottles of oil, four 1 kg bags of wax, a pack of 20 wicks, four packs of five jars. For 20 candles of 200 g at 8% that list is 3 × 100 g (₹560.00) + 2 × 15 g (₹105.02) of oil (₹1,890.04), 4 × 1 kg (₹599.00) of wax (₹2,396.00), 20 wicks (₹118.00) and 20 jars (₹1,416.00) — ₹5,820.04. It carries its own slack: 330 g of oil for 320 g of need, 4 kg of wax for 3.68 kg of need.

When the 100-candle inquiry lands, the tempting move is to buy that list five times. It costs ₹29,100.20, which looks ₹1,306.80 cheaper than the ₹30,407.00 list built from the order. It isn't cheaper; it is smaller. It covers exactly 100 candles with nothing for approval candles, burn tests, pour loss or a cracked jar. The moment you add those, it is short on every line — and the oil in it costs ₹5.73 a gram, because it buys fifteen-gram testers ten times over, against ₹5.46 a gram on the order list.

Total ₹5,820.04 ₹29,100.20 ₹30,407.00

The biggest difference is fragrance. Five small oil buys of 3 × 100 g (₹560.00) + 2 × 15 g (₹105.02) put ₹9,450.20 into 1,650 g of oil — less than the 1,747.2 g the order needs once tests and allowance are counted — paying the 15 g tester premium ten times. The order list buys 1,750 g for ₹9,555.00: 100 g more oil for ₹104.80 more. Wax runs the other way: five lots of four 1 kg bags is 20 kg, slightly less than the 20.09 kg the order needs once test candles and allowance are in. The ×5 list would leave you short on wax, oil, jars and wicks at once, having paid tester prices for part of the oil. That is the pattern to expect whenever you scale a list instead of a recipe.

The quiet error in scaling a list. A shopping list hides its rounding. When you bought three 100 g bottles for 320 g of need, you were fine for 20 candles. At 100 candles, that rounding is baked in five times and the gaps you never noticed — no test candles, no spare jars — become five times as large. Always scale the recipe (grams per candle), never the list.

Step 1 — the one-candle bill of materials

Everything starts with one finished candle weighed on a scale, not a jar's printed volume. For this order the customer chose a 200 g candle in a White Matte Glass Jar, scented with Bergamot Amber at 8%. Fragrance load is a share of the total finished weight, so oil = 200 × 0.08 = 16 g and wax = 200 − 16 = 184 g. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% fragrance load (the wax maker's stated formulation maximum, not a regulatory limit), so 8% sits comfortably inside it.

One candle · CSI live pricing (oil & wax 24 September 2026; wick & jar verified 10 September 2026)
The one-candle bill of materials
Line Quantity Rate used Cost per candle Note
Bergamot Amber 16 g ₹5.44/g (1 kg ₹5,437.00) ₹86.99 ₹5.60/g at 50 g and 100 g
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 184 g ₹0.60/g (1 kg ₹599.00) ₹110.22 5 kg is also ₹599.00/kg
Eco Thin C1 wick 1 ₹5.90 ₹5.90 confirm size with a burn test
White Matte Glass Jar 1 ₹70.80 (₹354.00 / 5) ₹70.80 sold in packs of 5
Material cost ₹273.91 excludes labour, packaging, freight, GST

That ₹273.91 is a rate, not a purchase. It uses the 1 kg per-gram price for oil and wax as if you could buy exactly 16 g and 184 g. You can't, and for a small order the difference between rate and outlay is the single biggest source of quoting error. Keep the rate for the quote; keep the pack list for the purchase. The full cost of a 200 g soy candle adds lid, label and packaging lines to this table if your order needs them.

Weigh one real candle before anything else
Pour one candle in the customer's chosen jar to the fill line you intend to sell and weigh it. If it comes out at 192 g instead of 200 g, every number on this page moves by 4%. Jar capacity printed in ml is not fill weight, and the difference between the two decides whether you run short on the last ten candles.

Step 2 and 3 — units and allowances

The customer is buying 100 candles. You are pouring more than 100.

Units are the candles you will physically pour. For a first order of this size that means the 100 sellable candles, plus 4 extra: two approval candles (one for the customer, one you keep as the reference) and two burn-test candles you will burn down to check wick and throw in the customer's jar. 104 units in total. If the customer already approved a sample from an earlier batch, you may need only two.

The allowance covers what never reaches a jar: wax left in the jug, drips, a few grams of oil clinging to the bottle and the beaker, a candle you reject for a sunk top or off-centre wick. Plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns — a working assumption, not a measured CSI figure. We use 5% here because the maker is moving from 20-candle batches to 100, and the first larger run is where loss is highest. On a repeat order you have run before, 3% is usually enough.

Order quantities · 200 g candle at 8% · allowance is a labelled working assumption
What the order consumes, line by line
Line Per unit × 104 units Allowance Order need
Fragrance oil 16 g 1,664 g +5% 1,747.2 g
Wax 184 g 19,136 g +5% 20,092.8 g (20.09 kg)
Wick 1 104 +4 spare for re-wicks 108
Jar 1 104 +2 spare for breakage 106

Jars and wicks get a count allowance, not a percentage. A jar either breaks or it doesn't, and two spares on 104 is proportionate for glass you unpack and handle yourself. Wicks are cheap enough that four spare costs less than one re-pour. Oil and wax get a percentage because their loss is continuous — a film in every jug, not a whole candle at a time.

Agree the load before you quote. Moving from 8% to 10% adds 436.8 g of oil to this order and changes the oil bill from ₹9,555.00 to ₹11,994.00, while wax falls only slightly. If the customer's sample was poured at 10%, production has to be poured at 10% too. The wedding-order post covers how much extra oil to hold when the fragrance itself is still being tested.

Step 4 — rounding to real packs

Now, and only now, turn grams into things you can put in a cart. The rule is simple: the cheapest combination of in-stock packs that covers the need, with the fewest packs when two combinations cost almost the same. For Bergamot Amber the in-stock sizes are 15 g (₹105.02), 50 g (₹280.00), 100 g (₹560.00), 500 g (₹2,718.00) and 1 kg (₹5,437.00). For 1,747.2 g that works out to 1 × 1 kg (₹5,437.00) + 1 × 500 g (₹2,718.00) + 2 × 100 g (₹560.00) + 1 × 50 g (₹280.00): 1,750 g for ₹9,555.00.

Wax works the same way. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks come in 500 g (₹299.00), 1 kg (₹599.00), 5 kg (₹2,995.00) and 10 kg (₹5,999.00). For 20.09 kg: 2 × 10 kg (₹5,999.00) + 1 × 500 g (₹299.00) = ₹12,297.00. Four 5 kg bags plus a 500 g bag would cost ₹12,279.00, eighteen rupees less, because the 10 kg bag is ₹599.90 a kilo against ₹599.00 for the 5 kg. Buy whichever you prefer to store. There is no bulk break on this wax at any listed size.

Total ₹30,407.00
Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell you more if we said "round the oil up to 2 kg to be safe". Two 1 kg bottles of Bergamot Amber cost ₹10,874.00 and leave 250 g on your shelf. The combination above covers the order, the tests and a 5% allowance for ₹9,555.00, and a kilo bottle is not cheaper per gram for this oil (₹5.44 against ₹5.44 at 500 g). Buy the kilo because you will reuse the scent, not because it is cheaper — here it isn't.

If the customer's oil were one with a real 1 kg price break, the rounding would change. British Rose is ₹3.42/g at 100 g and ₹3.07/g at 1 kg, 10.3% cheaper. For the same 1,747.2 g need, the cheapest British Rose list is 1 × 1 kg (₹3,068.00) + 1 × 500 g (₹1,593.00) + 2 × 100 g (₹342.20) + 1 × 50 g (₹212.40) = ₹5,557.80. For most oils, though, the per-gram line is flat above 100 g, and rounding up buys stock, not savings. The 2,000-candle post shows what happens when the need goes beyond the 1 kg listing altogether.

Building the quote from the right number

You will spend ₹30,407.00. That is not what 100 candles cost you.

The order consumes 1,747.2 g of oil and 20.09 kg of wax. At the prices you paid, that is ₹9,539.71 of oil and ₹12,052.74 of wax. The rest — 2.8 g of oil and 407.2 g of wax, worth ₹259.55 — is still sitting on your shelf when the order ships. Charge the customer for the first number, not the second. If you load the leftover into this quote, you will be dearer than a competitor who didn't, and you will still own the stock.

The practical shortcut for a small order is to quote on the total outlay spread across the sellable candles, ₹30,407.00 ÷ 100 = ₹304.07, and treat the leftover as a cushion. That spreads the test candles, allowance and spares across the 100 candles you are paid for, which is correct: the customer is the reason you poured them. Then add the costs that are not in CSI's catalogue.

Example only · the non-CSI lines are placeholders — replace every one with your own quotes

Markup on cost 32.3% (₹499.00 − ₹377.07) ÷ ₹377.07

Gross margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of cost. The same ₹ profit gives two different percentages, and mixing them up is how quotes go wrong. Courier, payment fees and GST are not in the table because they depend on how this customer pays and receives the order; add them as your own lines. We don't state tax rates on this page — check them with your accountant. Quantity-discount maths for 100, 500 and 1,000 pieces covers what to do when the customer asks for a lower price for more.

The CSI principle
Quote the recipe. Buy the packs. Keep the difference.
The customer pays for the grams their candles consume, the test candles that proved them and a fair allowance. What your pack sizes leave behind is inventory, and inventory belongs on your balance sheet, not in one customer's price.

Pouring 100 when you usually pour 20

You don't have to change how you pour. You have to change how you prepare. Five batches of 20 still work; each batch is 320 g of oil and 3.68 kg of wax, plus its share of the allowance. What changes is that the materials for all five must be in the building before you start the first, so the fifth batch is poured from the same oil bottle and the same wax as the first. A mid-order restock is where colour and scent drift creep in. Keeping batches identical goes deeper on that.

Pour the test and approval candles in batch one and burn one of them while the other batches cure. If the burn test shows a wick problem, you find out with 80 candles still to pour, not after all 100 are boxed. Keep the reference candle unlit and labelled with the batch date: if the customer later says the scent is weaker than the sample, you can compare like for like.

So for this order the 500 g and 1 kg sizes cost the same per gram, and the only price step worth avoiding is the 15 g tester at ₹7.00 a gram. 16 g per candle costs ₹86.99 at the kilo rate.

The alternative if the customer's budget is tighter. British Rose is one of the 24 oils where the kilo genuinely saves money — 10.3% per gram against the 100 g. At the kilo rate, 16 g costs ₹49.09 against ₹86.99 for Bergamot Amber, and the order's oil bill would be ₹5,557.80.

Around the order: Eco Candle Wicks are ₹5.90 each at every pack size (10 for ₹59.00 up to 1,000 for ₹5,900.00), so pack choice is only about convenience. White Matte Glass Jars are ₹354.00 for 5. A Wick Centering Device pack of 5 (₹118.00) is reused across every batch, and a weighing scale (₹354.00) matters more at 100 candles than at 20. More in Candle Wicks and Containers.

Five mistakes that turn a good quote into a loss

Quoting before weighing. A jar sold as holding 200 g may take 185 g at your fill line or 210 g if you fill to the shoulder. Quote on the weighed figure. Forgetting the test candles. Four candles is 4% of this order; ignore them and your allowance is gone before you start. Pricing oil at the 15 g rate. If your only reference is the tester you bought, Bergamot Amber looks like ₹7.00 a gram, not ₹5.44, and you over-quote by ₹25.03 a candle.

Loading the leftover into the price. ₹259.55 of oil and wax outlives this order; spread it across 100 candles and you add about ₹2.60 to every one. Assuming stock. Check each product page on the day you quote and again on the day you order. An out-of-stock size can force a more expensive combination. If a size you planned on is missing, ask on WhatsApp before you confirm a delivery date with the customer. For orders that come with a hard deadline, how much buffer to hold for rejects and delays goes further.

Once this first larger order is out, the same method scales without change. At 500 pieces the question becomes how much to buy before production and how much to stage — that is A Customer Wants 500 Custom Candles — How Much Wax, Fragrance Oil, Wick and Jar Inventory Should I Buy Before Starting Production?. At 1,000 corporate pieces the question is cash: whether to buy before the advance arrives. And when the order arrives before the scent is chosen, which materials are safe to buy early sorts the list into what can wait and what cannot.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The easy advice for a supplier is "round up generously". This page does the opposite: it sizes the purchase to the order, shows where a bigger bottle is not cheaper per gram, and tells you to keep leftover stock out of the customer's price.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026; wick, jar and centering-device prices are the Blog 760 figures verified 10 September 2026. Every pack combination was worked out from in-stock sizes only, and every total is plain arithmetic shown to two decimals so you can check it.

The 200 g candle, the 8% load, the 5% allowance, the four test candles and the spare-jar and spare-wick counts are working assumptions for this example. Replace them with your own weighed and measured figures. For an order-sized quote, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

how to calculate raw material for 100 candles
Weigh one finished candle, split it into oil (weight × load) and wax (the rest), multiply by the candles you will pour including tests, and add 3–5% for loss. For 200 g at 8%: 16 g oil and 184 g wax each; for 104 units at 5% that is 1,747.2 g of oil and 20.09 kg of wax. Then round up to in-stock packs.
how much fragrance oil for 100 candles of 200g
At 8%, 1,600 g for exactly 100 candles; 1,747.2 g once four test candles and a 5% allowance are added. With Bergamot Amber that is 1 × 1 kg (₹5,437.00) + 1 × 500 g (₹2,718.00) + 2 × 100 g (₹560.00) + 1 × 50 g (₹280.00) = ₹9,555.00. At 6% the need falls to 1,310.4 g; at 10% it rises to 2,184.0 g.
how much soy wax do I need for 100 candles
For 200 g candles at 8%: 18.4 kg for exactly 100, 20.09 kg with tests and a 5% allowance. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks: 2 × 10 kg (₹5,999.00) + 1 × 500 g (₹299.00) = ₹12,297.00. The per-kilo price is the same at 1 kg and 5 kg (₹599.00), so bag size is a storage choice.
should I include leftover wax and fragrance in my candle quote
No. Quote from what the order consumes, including tests and allowance. Stock left in packs after the order (₹259.55 here) is inventory for your next job. Spreading total outlay over the sellable candles (₹304.07 each here) is a reasonable shortcut for small orders.
how much extra wax to buy for candle wastage
Plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns, as a working assumption. Use the top of the range for your first run at a new size, the bottom for repeat orders. Jars and wicks get spare counts, not a percentage. The Diwali 1,000-candle post looks at wax overage in detail.
is it cheaper to buy 1 kg fragrance oil for a bulk candle order
Only for some oils. On CSI's listed prices, most oils cost within 1% per gram at 100 g and 1 kg; 24 oils show a 1 kg saving of 5% or more, British Rose (10.3%) among them. Bergamot Amber is ₹5.44 a gram at both 500 g and 1 kg. Volume pricing beyond the listed packs is quoted on WhatsApp and no discount figure is published.
Cost it, then buy it
Weigh one candle. Multiply by the units you will pour. Add a labelled allowance. Then round to packs.
This 100-candle order comes to ₹30,407.00 in CSI materials: Bergamot Amber, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, Eco Thin C1 wicks and White Matte Glass Jars. Send us your weight, load, fragrance and count and we will quote the list.

Non-price figures and assumptions: 200 g finished candle at an 8% load (16 g oil + 184 g wax); 4 test and approval candles; 5% allowance on oil and wax (plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns — a working assumption); 4 spare wicks and 2 spare jars. Label, box and labour figures are examples to replace with your own quotes. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks' 13% ceiling is the wax maker's stated formulation maximum, not a regulatory limit.
