Strong fragrance · rose-oud
Sweetness usually comes from vanilla and amber bases. Build the rose-oud from oils that keep them low, prove the ratio small, then scale by weight.
35:65
a suggested rose:oud ratio to test first, not a fixed formula
Quick answers — read this first
What makes a rose-oud smell too sweet? Mostly the base. Vanilla, caramel and amber notes push it towards dessert. Dark Vanilla Oud, for example, opens on vanilla, so it is the wrong base for this brief.

Which CSI oils suit a drier rose-oud? British Rose (0% vanillin per its page) blended with Woody Oud, and White Royal Oud as a ready-composed comparison with oud, rose petals and labdanum.

Should I test Royal Oud? Its 100 g pack is out of stock and the smallest available is 500 g at ₹3,300.00, which is a lot to buy for a trial. Test White Royal Oud first.

How do I scale the blend? Mix one master blend by weight for the whole batch, then dose each candle from it. Never weigh two oils separately into every jar.
The short answer
Ratio trials: Three ratios, 50:50, 35:65 and 20:80 rose:oud, as suggested starting points, smelled on strips, then poured as candles.
Candle size: The CSI 150 g apothecary jar at 8%: 12 g oil and 138 g wax per candle.
Cost: ₹218.55 per candle for the British Rose and Woody Oud blend, ₹267.56 for White Royal Oud alone.

Straight answer
I Want a Rose-Oud Candle That Smells Luxurious Rather Than Overly Sweet — How Should I Approach the Fragrance Blend Before Scaling It?
Keep sweetness out at the source. In a rose-oud, the sugary edge usually comes from vanilla, caramel or amber in the base, so avoid Dark Vanilla Oud for this brief and build from British Rose (0% vanillin on its page) and Woody Oud, with White Royal Oud poured alongside as a ready-made comparison. Screen three ratios on smelling strips, pour the best two as candles at 8% in the CSI 150 g apothecary jar, and wick-test with Eco C1 and C2. Once a ratio wins, scale it as a single master blend weighed for the whole batch, so every candle carries the same proportions. Buy small bottles first and 500 g packs only after approval.
One line: choose a rose and an oud with dry bases, prove the ratio in small bottles, and scale it as one weighed master blend.
British Rose lists 0% vanillin, which keeps the floral side of the blend from turning sugary.

Where the sweetness in a rose-oud comes from

A rose-oud turns dessert-like when its base is doing the talking, not its rose.

Luxury in this pairing usually reads as dry wood, a little resin and a clear rose that does not tip into jam. Sweetness tends to come from vanilla, caramel and soft amber in the base. So the first decision is not the ratio. It is which bottles you allow into the blend at all.

Look at what the CSI pages list. Dark Vanilla Oud opens on vanilla and cardamom and has amber in its heart, so it pulls the wrong way for this brief. Woody Oud lists citrus and spice on top, oud and patchouli in the middle, and woods, amber and musk in the base: drier, with patchouli adding depth. British Rose lists 0% vanillin and a published flashpoint of 192°C. White Royal Oud is already composed around oud, rose petals and labdanum over sandalwood, ambergris and musk, which makes it the natural benchmark for any blend you build.

Candidate oils
Rose-oud building blocks from CSI
Oil Notes on the page Role Smallest pack
British Rose Rose; 0% vanillin; flashpoint 192°C The floral side 15 g ₹94.40
Woody Oud Oud, patchouli; woods, amber, musk base The dry oud side 15 g ₹93.22
White Royal Oud Oud, rose petals, labdanum; sandalwood, ambergris, musk Ready-made benchmark 15 g ₹130.00
Royal Oud Oud, rose, cedarwood heart Possible later; 100 g out of stock 500 g ₹3,300.00
Dark Vanilla Oud Vanilla top, amber heart Avoid here; too sweet for the brief 15 g ₹105.02

Royal Oud is tempting on paper because its heart pairs oud with rose. With its 100 g pack out of stock, though, a trial would mean a 500 g purchase. Spend ₹130.00 on White Royal Oud instead and see whether a composed rose-oud already meets the brief.

Round one: smelling strips, not candles

You do not need wax to rule out a ratio that is obviously wrong. Make three small blends by weight in clean bottles, 5 g each, at 50:50, 35:65 and 20:80 rose to oud. Those ratios are suggested starting points chosen to span rose-led, balanced and oud-led. A 5 g blend at 35:65 is 1.75 g British Rose and 3.25 g Woody Oud.

1
Weigh into clean bottlesUse the same scale and record each gram, then cap and label every bottle.
2
Rest the blendsLeave them a day as a suggested starting point; freshly mixed oils can smell sharper than they settle.
3
Dip and waitDip a paper strip into each, wave it once, then smell it at once, after 30 minutes and after two hours. Smell only; never put fragrance oil near your mouth.
4
Judge the dry-downThe two-hour strip shows the base. If one ratio smells sugary there, it will smell sugary in the jar.

Keep the White Royal Oud strip beside them. If it already smells closer to your brief than any of your blends, that is a useful answer, even though it costs more per gram.

Round two: two ratios in wax

Strips tell you about character; only a burning candle tells you about throw. Pour your two best ratios plus White Royal Oud as a control in the CSI 150 g clear apothecary jar, whose page gives an approximate rim diameter of 7 cm, a base of about 6.5 cm and a 150 g fill, and states it is safe for hot pour up to 85°C. Pour below that temperature.

At 8% of a 150 g candle you need 12 g of oil and 138 g of wax. For a 35:65 blend that is 12 × 0.35 = 4.2 g British Rose and 12 × 0.65 = 7.8 g Woody Oud. Use CSI 464 soy flakes and wick each candle with Eco C1 and Eco C2 in separate jars, so three blends give six candles.

The rose vanishes on the burn but the oud stays. Do not just add more rose. Re-check the cure first, then try the next more rose-led ratio from your strip round, keeping the same total load.

Cure for at least the 48–72 h the soy pages state, and repeat the room check about a week later as a suggested starting point. Burn in a closed room of a consistent size and never leave a test candle unattended.

Scaling the approved ratio without drift

A blend that worked at 4.2 g and 7.8 g can drift once you scale it, because tiny weighing errors on two oils in every jar add up. The fix is a master blend: weigh the full batch of oil into one container, stir well, and dose every candle from it.

For 50 candles of 150 g at 8%, the master blend is 50 × 12 g = 600 g, of which 600 × 0.35 = 210 g is British Rose and 600 × 0.65 = 390 g is Woody Oud. The wax is 50 × 138 g = 6,900 g.

Pack plan
50 rose-oud candles at 8%, 35:65
Material Need Option Cost
British Rose 210 g 2 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g = 215 g 2 × ₹342.20 + ₹94.40 = ₹778.80
British Rose 210 g 1 × 500 g (290 g left over) ₹1,593.00
Woody Oud 390 g 1 × 500 g ₹2,265.60
CSI 464 6,900 g 1 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg = 7 kg ₹2,537.00 + 2 × ₹507.40 = ₹3,551.80
150 g jars 50 2 × pack of 20 + 1 × pack of 10 2 × ₹1,888.00 + ₹944.00 = ₹4,720.00

For British Rose, the small-pack route is cheaper for this batch. If you plan a second batch soon, though, the 500 g pack covers both runs, so let your production calendar decide. For the wax, compare a full 10 kg pack at ₹5,074.00: CSI 464 is the same price per kilogram at every pack size, so the larger pack only means more wax on the shelf, not a better rate.

Per-candle cost of each version

Per-gram prices come from the 1 kg packs: British Rose ₹3,068.00 gives ₹3.068 per gram, Woody Oud ₹4,531.20 gives ₹4.5312, and White Royal Oud ₹8,103.00 gives ₹8.103. Wax is ₹0.5074 per gram, the jar is ₹944.00 ÷ 10 = ₹94.40 and Eco C1 is ₹5.90.

Cost build-up
150 g apothecary candle at 8%
Line British Rose + Woody Oud 35:65 White Royal Oud alone
Wax 138 g ₹70.02 ₹70.02
Oil 4.2 g × ₹3.068 (₹12.89) + 7.8 g × ₹4.5312 (₹35.34) = ₹48.23 12 g × ₹8.103 = ₹97.24
Jar ₹94.40 ₹94.40
Wick ₹5.90 ₹5.90
Total ₹218.55 ₹267.56

The difference is ₹49.01 per candle. If customers cannot tell your blend from the composed oil, the blend wins on cost; if the composed oil clearly smells more refined in the room, its premium may be justified at your price point. These totals leave out packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST.

Buy this to test, buy this once validated

To test: British Rose 50 g ₹212.40, Woody Oud 50 g ₹271.40, White Royal Oud 2 × 15 g = ₹260.00, CSI 464 1 kg ₹507.40, one pack of ten 150 g jars ₹944.00, Eco C1 20 wicks ₹118.00 and Eco C2 10 wicks ₹94.40, a total of ₹2,407.60. Check the grams: the strip round uses at most 9.75 g of Woody Oud, and even the most oud-led pair of candle ratios needs 34.8 g more, so the 50 g bottle covers both rounds. The White Royal Oud control needs 2 × 12 g = 24 g, inside two 15 g bottles. Six candles use 6 × 138 g = 828 g of wax, leaving a little for a re-pour.

Once validated: the master-blend quantities from the pack plan above, a jar order to match, and wicks of the winning size only. Hold back on a 1 kg pack until you have sold through one batch and know the scent repeats well across a second. If White Royal Oud won instead, the shopping list is simpler still: 600 g of one oil, which is a 500 g pack at ₹4,051.00 plus a 100 g at ₹810.00, and no blending step at all.

Argue against interest
You may not need to blend at all.
If the composed oil beats your blend in the room, buy the composed oil and skip the extra weighing. A cheaper blend that smells ordinary costs you more in lost sales.
Pick the base for dryness first, then argue about the ratio.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a rose oud candle less sweet?
Avoid oils whose page lists vanilla or caramel prominently, such as Dark Vanilla Oud. Pair a rose with 0% vanillin, like British Rose, with a woody oud, then shift the ratio towards oud if the dry-down still feels sugary on a strip.
What ratio of rose to oud should I use in a candle?
There is no fixed answer. As a suggested starting point, smell 50:50, 35:65 and 20:80 rose to oud on strips, then pour the best two at the same total load and judge them burning.
How do I keep a fragrance blend consistent across a batch?
Weigh a single master blend for the full batch, stir it thoroughly, then dose every candle from that container. Weighing two oils separately into each jar multiplies small weighing errors across the whole run.
Is Royal Oud good for a rose oud candle?
Its heart lists oud, rose and cedarwood, so it fits the idea. Its 100 g pack is out of stock, however, and the smallest available is 500 g at ₹3,300.00, so test White Royal Oud in a 15 g bottle first.
What temperature should I pour into the 150 g apothecary jar?
The product page states it is safe for hot pour up to 85°C, so pour below that. Add the fragrance oil before pouring and below its published flashpoint, which is 192°C for British Rose, then stir gently.
How much fragrance oil do I need for 50 rose oud candles?
At 8% of a 150 g candle each needs 12 g, so the batch needs 600 g. At 35:65 that is 210 g of British Rose and 390 g of Woody Oud.
