Strong fragrance · collection selection
Bottle strength is a first impression. A collection is built from oils that win a staged test in your wax and jar, and that you can reorder.
₹2,610.76
a suggested first screen of eight CSI oils in your jar
Quick answers — read this first
Why not choose by bottle strength? Neat oil puts its most volatile notes forward. In wax, the oil is a few percent of the candle and released from the melt pool, which favours different oils.

How many oils should I screen? As a suggested starting point, eight in 15 g bottles for a five-oil collection, so weaker ones can drop out.

What should I score? Room throw while burning, cold throw, burn behaviour, colour change, cost per candle and supply. Weight them to suit your brand.

Do strength ratings on pages help? They are each page's own wording, not measured data. Use them to shortlist, never to approve.
The short answer
Funnel: Strip check, one-load screen, load ladder, wick round, then a repeat pour before bulk.
Screen: Eight oils at 8% in the 150 g apothecary jar: 12 g oil and 138 g CSI 464 each.
Supply check: Sandalwood 50 g and 100 g, Vetiver 1 kg and Royal Oud 100 g were out of stock on the October 2026 pull.

Straight answer
I Want to Build a Strong-Fragrance Candle Collection — How Do I Select Fragrance Oils Based on Performance in Wax Rather Than How Powerful They Smell From the Bottle?
Run a staged funnel in your own wax and jar. Shortlist about eight oils on paper and on strips, then screen each from a 15 g bottle at one load, for example 8% of a 150 g candle (12 g oil, 138 g CSI 464). Score each one on room throw while burning, cold throw, burn behaviour, colour change, cost per candle and whether you can reliably reorder it. The top oils move to a load ladder and a wick round; only the survivors get kilograms. Page strength ratings such as Lavender's Strong or Lemongrass and Lime's moderate are the pages' own wording, so treat them as hints. The screen for eight CSI oils costs ₹2,610.76 in materials.
One line: shortlist on paper, screen in 15 g bottles in your jar, score on performance and supply, and buy kilograms only for the winners.
Blue Ocean is a useful wildcard for a strong collection: aquatic, 143°C flashpoint, 0% vanillin and up to 10%.

Why the bottle is the wrong judge

The oil that wins the sniff test at the counter is often not the one that fills the room.

Neat fragrance oil at room temperature presents its lightest materials first, at full concentration. A candle presents the same oil diluted to a few percent, locked in wax, and released only from a warm pool. Some oils keep their impact through that change; others lose much of it. You cannot tell which from the bottle.

Product-page ratings are also only a starting hint. CSI pages rate Lavender Strong, Eucalyptus Spearmint and Vanilla Bean moderate to strong, and Lemongrass and Lime moderate. Those are the pages' own descriptions, not measured data, and they tell you nothing about your jar, your wax or your wick. For a collection marketed on strength, the only rating that counts is the one you record in a burning candle.

The selection funnel, stage by stage

A funnel spends little on many oils and more on a few. Each stage removes the weakest before the next costs more.

1
Paper shortlistRead each page: notes, stated load range, vanillin, flashpoint and available pack sizes. Drop any oil that cannot fit your wax at a sensible load.
2
Strip checkSmell each oil on a paper strip at once and after two hours, to remove anything that clearly does not fit the brand. Smell only.
3
One-load screenPour each survivor at a single load in your production jar and wax. This is where most of the information comes from.
4
Load ladderTake the top oils to 6%, 8% and 10%, or the range their page allows, and find each one's lowest effective load.
5
Wick roundFor each oil at its chosen load, compare Eco C1 and Eco C2. CSI publishes no wick chart, so this round is not optional.
6
Repeat pourPour the approved formula again, from a fresh bottle if possible, before buying kilograms. A formula that works twice is a formula.

Every count and load in that list is a suggested starting point. A small collection might screen six oils; a brand built entirely on strength might screen twelve.

The funnel also protects you from a common trap: falling for one oil early and then testing everything else against it unfairly. Because every oil in the screen gets the same jar, wax, load and wick, the comparison is level. Only at the ladder stage does each oil get its own treatment, and by then you are refining winners rather than rescuing favourites.

A worked first screen: eight CSI oils

Suppose the collection brief is strong, distinct scents across woods, gourmands, fresh and aquatic. Eight CSI oils from the 15 g size make a reasonable first screen. Each is poured at 8% of a 150 g candle in the CSI apothecary jar: 150 × 0.08 = 12 g of oil and 138 g of CSI 464, so each 15 g bottle covers one candle with a little left for a strip.

Screening list
Eight oils, one candle each, 150 g at 8%
Oil Family 15 g price Oil cost per candle at 12 g (from 1 kg)
Woody Oud Woody oud ₹93.22 ₹54.37
Sandalwood Creamy wood ₹93.22 ₹60.32
Roasted Coffee Gourmand ₹93.22 ₹44.86
Dark Vanilla Gourmand ₹130.00 ₹91.75
Lavender Herbal ₹105.02 ₹62.65
Blue Ocean Aquatic ₹93.22 ₹59.47
Eucalyptus Spearmint Fresh ₹68.44 ₹36.82
Bergamot Amber Citrus amber ₹105.02 ₹65.24

The eight bottles cost 4 × ₹93.22 + ₹130.00 + 2 × ₹105.02 + ₹68.44 = ₹781.36. Wax for eight candles is 8 × 138 g = 1,104 g, so CSI 464 1 kg ₹507.40 plus 500 g ₹260.00. Add a pack of ten 150 g jars ₹944.00 and Eco C1 20 wicks ₹118.00. The screen comes to ₹2,610.76, before any packaging, labels or labour.

Mind the flashpoints
The pages publish 143°C for Blue Ocean, 199°C for Eucalyptus Spearmint, 203°C for Sandalwood and about 191–193°C for Roasted Coffee and Dark Vanilla. Add every oil to cooled wax with the melter never at its maximum, and pour into the apothecary jar below the 85°C its page states as safe for hot pour.

The scorecard: weight what your brand sells

After at least the 48–72 h cure the soy pages state, and again around day 7 as a suggested starting point, burn each screen candle in the same room for the same time. Score each criterion 1–5 and multiply by a weight you choose.

Scorecard
Weights are suggested starting points for a strength-led brand
Criterion Weight How to score it
Room throw while burning 30 Return to the room after a brief absence; how strong and how far?
Burn behaviour 20 Pool width, flame steadiness, mushrooming, soot
Cold throw 15 Lid off at 72 h; is it noticeable at arm's length?
Character in wax 15 Does it still smell like the brief, or has it flattened?
Colour change 10 Compare against an unscented control after a week
Cost and supply 10 Cost per candle, and are mid-sized packs in stock?

A strength-led brand weights room throw heavily, but not so heavily that a sooty candle can win. A minimalist white brand might move colour change up to 20 and room throw down. Write the weights down before you burn anything, so you do not adjust them to favour the oil you already like.

Worked scoring
Two hypothetical oils, weights as above
Criterion Weight Oil A score Oil A points Oil B score Oil B points
Room throw 30 4 120 5 150
Burn behaviour 20 3 60 2 40
Cold throw 15 5 75 4 60
Character in wax 15 4 60 3 45
Colour change 10 5 50 2 20
Cost and supply 10 3 30 4 40
Total (of 500) 395 355

Oil B throws harder, and it would probably have won the bottle test too. It loses because it burns poorly and discolours, and those are the things a customer sees after the third evening.

Two oils tie on score. Keep the one with the more reliable supply and the lower cost per candle. A tie on smell is not a tie on business.

Supply is part of performance

An oil that wins the screen but cannot be reordered in sensible sizes is a weak collection member. On the October 2026 pull, Sandalwood's 50 g and 100 g packs, Vetiver's 1 kg and Royal Oud's 100 g were out of stock, as was Chocolate Fudge's 100 g. None of that disqualifies those oils, but it changes how you buy them: a 500 g Sandalwood at ₹2,513.40 is a larger commitment than a 100 g restock would have been.

Before you approve a collection, list each oil's pack sizes and decide which one you will reorder. Ask CSI on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926) for IFRA and MSDS documents for every approved oil, since the pages state these are available on request. Record the date you received them with your formula sheet.

Buy this to test, buy this once validated

To screen: the eight 15 g bottles ₹781.36, CSI 464 1.5 kg ₹767.40, ten 150 g jars ₹944.00 and Eco C1 20 wicks ₹118.00, a total of ₹2,610.76. For the ladder round, buy 50 g of each surviving oil; three loads of a 150 g candle at 6%, 8% and 10% need 9 + 12 + 15 = 36 g, so a 50 g bottle covers each oil with room for a strip. Add Eco C2 10 wicks ₹94.40 for the wick round.

Once validated: buy each approved oil at the pack size its own load and your batch size require, and CSI 464 in 10 kg packs at ₹5,074.00, the same price per kilogram as the smaller packs. The kilograms come last, and only for oils that have won in wax twice. Keep the losing candles' score sheets as well. When you extend the collection next season, the oils that narrowly missed out are your first shortlist, and you will not pay to screen them again.

Argue against interest
Screen more oils than you will sell.
Eight 15 g bottles cost less than one wrong kilogram. The oils that drop out are the cheapest lesson in the whole collection.
The only strength rating that counts is the one you write down beside a burning candle.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose fragrance oils for a candle collection?
Shortlist on paper, check on strips, then screen each oil in your own wax and jar at one load. Score burning throw, burn behaviour, cold throw, character, colour change and supply, and move only the winners to load and wick testing.
Why does a fragrance oil smell strong in the bottle but weak in a candle?
Neat oil presents its lightest materials at full concentration. In a candle the oil is a few percent of the total and released from the melt pool, which suits some oils far better than others.
How many fragrance oils should I test for a five-scent collection?
As a suggested starting point, screen about eight so that weaker oils can drop out without leaving gaps in the collection. A brand built entirely on strength may want to screen ten or twelve.
Are fragrance strength ratings on product pages reliable?
They are each page's own description, not measured data from your jar or wax. Use them to decide what goes into the screen, then let your own burn test and scorecard decide what is approved.
What does it cost to screen eight candle fragrance oils?
With eight CSI 15 g bottles, 1.5 kg of CSI 464, ten 150 g apothecary jars and twenty Eco C1 wicks, the materials cost ₹2,610.76, before packaging, labels and your own time.
Should supply availability affect fragrance selection?
Yes. An oil you cannot reorder in a sensible size is a risk to the collection. Check which packs are in stock before approving, and plan around the size you will actually reorder.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST.
