I Want to Develop a Commercial Candle Product From Idea to Production — How Do I Turn My Target Size, Fragrance Strength, Appearance, Burn Time, Indian Climate Requirements, Selling Price and Monthly Volume Into an Exact Raw-Material Shopping List?
Aktie
How do I turn a brief into materials? Translate it in order: container, wax, fragrance and load, wick, dye, then quantities. Check the cost per candle against your price before testing.
How many test candles does the example need? Eight: two waxes × two oils × two wicks, then a second round only for the winning combination, including a recorded heat check.
Does CSI publish burn times? No. CSI publishes no burn-time figure for finished candles, so burn one to the end in attended sessions and add up the hours.
Write the product brief before you open the store
This is the end-to-end method for the whole series. Seven inputs go in: target size, fragrance strength, appearance, burn time, Indian climate, selling price and monthly volume. Out comes a test-first list and a production list with every gram and every rupee accounted for. The method works for any product; the worked example uses one so the arithmetic stays concrete.
Fill in the brief in plain words first. Each answer should be something you could check later: a weight, a percentage, a colour, a price, a count. Vague answers such as 'strong' or 'premium' have to be translated into something measurable before they can choose a material.
| Brief item | Example answer (reader's figures) | What it decides |
|---|---|---|
| Target size | 200 g candle in a 7 cm-wide glass jar | Vessel: Clear Frosted matte 200 ml jar (height 8 cm, width 7 cm per its page); grams of wax and oil |
| Fragrance strength | Clearly noticeable in a living room, not overpowering | Starting load 8% of total weight, inside each oil's stated range |
| Appearance | White wax, smooth top, visible through frosted glass | No dye; oils with 0% vanillin; a wax compared for top finish |
| Burn time | Your own target, for example 35 hours, to be measured | Fill and wick choice; CSI publishes no burn-time figure for finished candles |
| Indian climate | Shipped pan-India, including summer | Moderate load; a heat check of boxed candles; packaging as part of protection |
| Selling price | ₹699 per candle, treated as ex-GST | Maximum cost per candle |
| Monthly volume | 300 candles, two fragrances at 150 each | Pack sizes and order rhythm |
Translate the brief into a starting specification
Work through the brief in the series' standard order: container, wax, fragrance and load, wick, dye, then quantities. Each line below is a suggested starting point to be proven, not a guaranteed result.
Check the price before you test
At list prices, a Sandalwood candle in CSI 464 with Eco C2 costs 184 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹93.36 wax, 16 g × ₹5.0268 = ₹80.43 oil, ₹70.80 jar and ₹9.44 wick, so ₹254.03. In CSI 468 the wax is 184 g × ₹0.637 = ₹117.21 and the total ₹277.88. With ₹70 packaging (your own quote) and ₹699 ex-GST, margins are (₹699 − ₹254.03 − ₹70) ÷ ₹699 = 53.64% and (₹699 − ₹277.88 − ₹70) ÷ ₹699 = 50.23%. If your target is 50%, both waxes stay in the test. If it were 55%, neither would, and you would revisit the brief before buying a gram.
The test round: eight candles that answer the brief
Design the test so each candle answers a question in the brief. Two waxes × two oils × two wicks gives eight candles, a compact suggested starting point. Add a second round only for the combination that wins.
| Comparison | Brief line it answers | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| CSI 464 vs CSI 468 | Appearance, price | Top smoothness after cooling and after the first burn; glass adhesion through frosted glass |
| Sandalwood vs Blue Ocean | Strength, appearance | Cold throw after the stated 48–72 h cure and again at days 7 and 14 (suggested); any colour change |
| Eco C1 vs Eco C2 | Burn time, strength | Hours to a full melt pool, total hours burned in attended sessions, soot, glass heat |
| Winner in a boxed heat check | Indian climate | Sweating, softening or surface change after time in the warmest storage spot you have, with a thermometer recording the temperature |
Burn time needs patience. The only way to know whether the candle reaches your target is to burn one to the end in attended sessions and add up the hours. A 35-hour target is about a week of evening sessions. If it falls short, the levers are a different wick or a larger fill, and either sends you back through the cost check.
Run every burn attended on a level, heat-safe surface, extinguish any candle that smokes or flares, and add each oil below its published flashpoint, checking with a separate thermometer.
The exact shopping list
The test list follows the matrix. Sandalwood's 50 g and 100 g packs were out of stock on the pull, so five 15 g bottles (5 × ₹93.22 = ₹466.10) cover the 64 g needed for four candles without committing to 500 g. The production list assumes CSI 464 and Eco C2 won and you are making the month's 300 candles.
| Stage | Item | Pack | Price | Working |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test | CSI 464 | 1 kg | ₹507.40 | 4 × 184 g = 736 g |
| Test | CSI 468 | 1 kg | ₹650.00 | 736 g |
| Test | Sandalwood | 5 × 15 g | ₹466.10 | 4 × 16 g = 64 g |
| Test | Blue Ocean | 100 g | ₹495.00 | 64 g; the 50 g pack is too small |
| Test | Clear Frosted 200 ml jars | Pack of 10 | ₹708.00 | 8 needed, 2 spare |
| Test | Eco C1 / Eco C2 | 20 / 10 | ₹212.40 | ₹118.00 + ₹94.40 |
| Production | CSI 464 | 5 × 10 kg + 5 kg + 500 g | ₹28,167.00 | 300 × 184 g = 55.2 kg; ₹25,370.00 + ₹2,537.00 + ₹260.00 |
| Production | Sandalwood | 2 × 1 kg + 500 g | ₹12,567.00 | 150 × 16 g = 2.4 kg |
| Production | Blue Ocean | 2 × 1 kg + 500 g | ₹12,390.00 | 2.4 kg; ₹9,912.00 + ₹2,478.00 |
| Production | Clear Frosted 200 ml jars | 30 packs of 10 | ₹21,240.00 | ₹70.80 each |
| Production | Eco C2 wicks | 3 × 100 | ₹2,832.00 | ₹944.00 per 100 |
The test round costs ₹3,038.90 (₹507.40 + ₹650.00 + ₹466.10 + ₹495.00 + ₹708.00 + ₹212.40). The month's production order is ₹77,196.00 before packaging, labour, shipping and GST, leaving 300 g of wax and 100 g of each oil over. If CSI 468 wins instead, its wax line becomes 5 × ₹6,370.00 + ₹3,185.00 + ₹325.00 = ₹35,360.00 and the month rises to ₹84,389.00. The matte jar page notes some colours go out of stock, so confirm Clear Frosted availability before you commit the launch to it.
Close the loop every month
Once production starts, the brief becomes your checklist. Each month, recheck three things against it: that the candles still look as the appearance line says, that a sample from each batch still meets your burn-time target, and that the cost per candle still fits the price. When any input changes, whether a new fragrance, a price rise, a summer season or a jump to 600 candles, change that line of the brief and walk it through the same order again.
That is the whole method. Write the brief in measurable terms, translate it in the order of jar, wax, oil, wick and dye, check the price before you test, test only what the brief asks, and buy production quantities only for the combination that passed. Everything on the final list is there because a line in the brief put it there.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points. Prices re-checked 1 October 2026; product pages are authoritative.
