100 candles · minimum leftover
Round shared materials — wax, jars, wicks — to the cheapest cover; their leftover is next month's stock. Round each fragrance oil to the tightest sensible cover, unless a real bulk step makes the bigger bottle cheaper.
35.6 g
Gardenia left over after 100 × 200 g candles with the chosen bottles (1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g) · worth ₹154.33 · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I choose pack sizes? Compute the requirement with allowances, list in-stock packs, find the cheapest and the tightest cover, then decide by whether the leftover is shared or scent-specific.

Wax? Chunks: every option leaves 134.4 g; choose on bag count. 4 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg is ₹12,579.00.

Oil? Gardenia: 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g, 35.6 g over, ₹8,020.02. Citronella is the exception: 2 × 1 kg is ₹1,026.60 cheaper than the tightest fit.

Jars and wicks? The smallest step sets the leftover: jars in 5s (4 over), Thin C1 wicks in 20s while the 10-pack is out (8 over).
The short answer
Answer: Choose the cheapest in-stock cover for shared materials and the tightest sensible cover for scent-specific oil — except where an oil's bigger bottle is genuinely cheaper per gram.
Why: On most CSI packs the cheapest and tightest covers coincide because prices are near-linear; they diverge only at real bulk steps, sample-size premiums and counted-pack steps.
Method: Requirement → in-stock packs → cheapest, tightest, fewest → classify leftover → check the plan against the pack → record every remainder.
Closest packs to the requirement: cost, leftover and bottle count 100 × 200 g · 8% · with allowances: 20,865.6 g wax · 1,814.4 g oil · bars show grams bought beyond the need Chunks wax need 20,865.6 g cheapest +134.4 g · 42 packs · ₹12,558.00 least leftover +134.4 g · 42 packs · ₹12,558.00 fewest packs +134.4 g · 3 packs · ₹12,597.00 Gardenia oil need 1,814.4 g cheapest +0.6 g · 19 packs · ₹7,899.02 least leftover +0.6 g · 19 packs · ₹7,899.02 fewest packs +185.6 g · 2 packs · ₹8,664.00 Citronella oil need 1,814.4 g cheapest +185.6 g · 2 packs · ₹5,782.00 least leftover +0.6 g · 9 packs · ₹6,808.60 fewest packs +185.6 g · 2 packs · ₹5,782.00 Chunks and Gardenia: the cheapest choice is already the tightest — but in 19–42 small packs. Citronella: the tightest choice costs ₹1,026.60 more than buying 2 × 1 kg and carrying the remainder. Leftover is only a cost if it is never used.
Grams bought beyond the requirement for three materials under three objectives. For Chunks wax and Gardenia oil the cheapest cover is also the tightest, at the cost of many small packs; for Citronella, whose larger bottles are much cheaper per gram, the tightest cover costs more. Allowances are labelled working assumptions.
Straight answer
I want to make 100 candles with the minimum possible leftover raw material — how do I choose CSI pack sizes closest to my calculated requirements?
List every in-stock pack, find the cheapest and the tightest combination that covers each requirement, and choose by whether the leftover is shared or scent-specific. For 100 × 200 g candles at 8% with labelled allowances (4 tests, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss, 2% breakage, 4 spare wicks) the requirement is 20,865.6 g of wax, 1,814.4 g of oil, 111 jars and 112 wicks. For Chunks, every cover leaves 134.4 g, so choose on bag count: 4 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg. For Gardenia, whose price is flat from 100 g, the practical tight fit is 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g — 35.6 g over. Jars round to 115 (packs of 5) and wicks to 120 (the Thin C1 10-pack is out of stock). Total: ₹29,749.02. The exception is an oil with a real bulk step: for Citronella, two 1 kg bottles cost ₹1,026.60 less than the tightest fit, so the bigger leftover is the better buy.
One line: cheapest cover for shared materials, tightest sensible cover for each oil — and always check for a real bulk step first.
For 100 candles of 200 g at 8% (needs with allowances: 20,865.6 g wax, 1,814.4 g oil, 111 jars, 112 wicks), the closest real CSI packs are Chunks 4 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg (134.4 g over), Gardenia 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g (35.6 g over), White Matte jars 11 × pack of 10 + 1 × pack of 5 and Eco Thin C1 1 × 100-pack + 1 × 20-pack — ₹29,749.02 in all.

Three ways to round, and why they usually agree

Every pack choice trades three things: rupees, grams left over, and the number of bottles and bags you have to handle.

Once the allowance stack has turned 100 saleable candles into a requirement — here 20,865.6 g of wax, 1,814.4 g of oil, 111 jars and 112 wicks, using 4 test candles, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss, 2% breakage and 4 spare wicks as labelled working assumptions — the last step is choosing real packs. There are three sensible objectives. Cheapest: the lowest total price that covers the need. Least leftover: the combination that lands closest above the need. Fewest packs: the simplest order to receive, store and open. Most of the time on CSI's catalogue, the first two are the same answer, because most packs are priced almost linearly. The interesting cases are where they are not.

The rule this page applies is simple. List every in-stock pack. Compute each combination that covers the need. Look at the cheapest and the tightest. If they are the same, choose between them and the fewest-packs option on convenience. If they differ, ask one question: is the leftover shared or specific? A leftover of wax, jars or wicks you use in every candle is simply next month's stock. A leftover of one fragrance oil is only useful if you make that scent again.

The CSI principle
Minimise leftover on scent-specific materials. Minimise rupees on shared ones.
A remainder of the wax every candle uses costs nothing but shelf space; a remainder of a scent you may not reorder is money that may never come back.

Wax: 500 g bags make the tightest fit

Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is listed at 500 g ₹299.00, 1 kg ₹599.00, 5 kg ₹2,995.00 and 10 kg ₹5,999.00: ₹598.00, ₹599.00, ₹599.00 and ₹599.90 a kilo. Because the 500 g bag is both the smallest and the cheapest per kilo, the cheapest combination is also the tightest — but it is a lot of bags.

Need 20,865.6 g · CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026
Wax: three ways to cover the same requirement
Option Packs Number of packs Leftover Price
Chunks · Cheapest 42 × 500 g 42 134.4 g ₹12,558.00
Chunks · Least leftover 42 × 500 g 42 134.4 g ₹12,558.00
Chunks · Fewest packs 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg 3 134.4 g ₹12,597.00
Chunks · practical (chosen) 4 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg 5 134.4 g ₹12,579.00

Every option leaves the same 134.4 g, because 21 kg is the first multiple of 500 g above the need. So for this wax the decision is purely rupees against bag count: 42 × 500 g is the cheapest at ₹12,558.00; the fewest bags, 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg, cost ₹39.00 more, because the 10 kg bag is the one Chunks size that is dearer per kilo. The practical middle, 4 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg, is five bags for ₹12,579.00 — ₹21.00 above the cheapest and ₹18.00 below the 10 kg route. Any of them is defensible. The leftover is shared — it goes into the next candle of any scent.

A wax with a real bulk step behaves differently
Natural Soy Pearl Wax starts at 1 kg (₹450.00) and drops to ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg. Its cheapest cover for this need is 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg at ₹8,946.00, leaving 134.4 g; a tighter fit is impossible because its smallest bag is 1 kg. Coarse packs mean larger leftovers — acceptable on a shared wax.

Oil: where leftover actually costs money

A gram of leftover fragrance is only worth what it costs if you pour that scent again.

Gardenia Fragrance Oil is priced almost flat above 50 g: 15 g ₹105.02 (₹7.00/g), 50 g ₹223.02 (₹4.46/g), and ₹4.33/g at 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg. That flat ladder means you can land very close to the need without paying more per gram. The table shows the three objectives, plus the practical choice this page uses — the cheapest combination of 50 g and larger bottles, with near-ties broken towards fewer bottles.

Need 1,814.4 g · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026
Gardenia: three objectives and the practical choice
Option Bottles Number of bottles Leftover Price
Gardenia · Cheapest 18 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g 19 0.6 g ₹7,899.02
Gardenia · Least leftover 18 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g 19 0.6 g ₹7,899.02
Gardenia · Fewest packs 2 × 1 kg 2 185.6 g ₹8,664.00
Gardenia · practical (chosen) 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g 6 35.6 g ₹8,020.02

The strict cheapest, 18 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g, is also the tightest — 0.6 g over — but it is nineteen bottles and leaves no margin if your pour loss runs a little above 5%. The practical choice, 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g, costs ₹121.00 more, uses 6 bottles, and leaves 35.6 g — worth ₹154.33 if it were never used. The fewest-bottles option, two 1 kg bottles, leaves 185.6 g for ₹643.98 more than the practical choice: a poor trade for a scent-specific material.

Citronella Fragrance Oil is the counter-example. Its 100 g bottle is ₹7.67/g; its 500 g is ₹2.95/g and its 1 kg ₹2.89/g — the largest bulk step on CSI's oil list. Here the cheapest and the tightest options part company sharply:

Need 1,814.4 g · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026
Citronella: when the bigger leftover is the cheaper buy
Option Bottles Number of bottles Leftover Price
Citronella · Cheapest 2 × 1 kg 2 185.6 g ₹5,782.00
Citronella · Least leftover 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 6 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g 9 0.6 g ₹6,808.60
Citronella · Fewest packs 2 × 1 kg 2 185.6 g ₹5,782.00

Buying 2 × 1 kg leaves 185.6 g over and costs ₹1,026.60 less than the tightest fit. The "waste" is cheaper than the precision. For an oil with a real bulk step, minimum leftover is the wrong objective: buy the cheapest cover and plan a use for the remainder. The 10%-versus-8% post shows the opposite quirk in Saffron Cedarwood, where the 1 kg bottle is dearer per gram than the 500 g.

The precision trap: buying 15 g bottles to shave the leftover. A 15 g bottle carries the catalogue's one reliable per-gram premium — Gardenia's is ₹7.00/g against ₹4.33/g at 100 g. Using it to land within a gram of the need saves a little leftover and leaves no margin for a heavier pour. Fix: keep 15 g bottles for sampling; round production oil with 50 g and larger bottles, and accept a few tens of grams over.

Jars and wicks: the step size sets the leftover

Counted materials have a minimum leftover set by the smallest pack. White Matte Glass Jar comes in packs of 5 and 10 at ₹70.80 a jar, so 111 jars round to 115 — 4 over — whichever packs you choose. Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 is ₹5.90 a wick at every pack, but with the 10-pack out of stock on the 4 October 2026 re-check the smallest step is 20, so 112 wicks round to 120 (1 × 100-pack + 1 × 20-pack, ₹708.00). Stickers come in sheets of 40: 3 sheets for 112 wicks.

wick and jar packs re-checked 4 October 2026
Counted materials: need, smallest step, leftover
Material Need Smallest in-stock step Bought Leftover Price
White Matte Glass Jar 111 5 11 × pack of 10 + 1 × pack of 5 = 115 4 ₹8,142.00
Eco Thin C1 wicks 112 20 (10-pack out of stock) 1 × 100-pack + 1 × 20-pack = 120 8 ₹708.00
Wick stickers 112 40 3 × 40 = 120 8 ₹300.00

All three leftovers are shared materials, so they carry into the next run at no loss — provided the next run uses the same jar and wick. That is a quiet argument for standardising on one jar and one wick early: every remainder stays useful. First 100: bulk or small makes the same point from the buying side.

Or change the plan to fit the pack

Sometimes the smallest leftover comes from adjusting the candle count, not the packs. With the practical Gardenia order of 1,850 g, the oil supports 110 candles poured at 16 g plus 5% pour loss, against the 108 planned. Bought as two 1 kg bottles, it would support 119. If your wax, jars and wicks also cover the extra candles, pouring them turns a leftover into stock you can sell.

1
Compute the requirement with allowancesTests, rejects, pour loss and breakage in that order. Here: 20,865.6 g wax, 1,814.4 g oil, 111 jars, 112 wicks.
2
List only in-stock packsCheck the stock flags first. Never plan around an out-of-stock size — on the 4 October re-check that includes the Eco Thin C1 10-pack and Sandalwood's small bottles.
3
Find the cheapest and the tightest coverFor most CSI materials they are the same. Where they differ, note the rupee gap and the leftover gap.
4
Classify the leftoverShared (wax, jars, wicks, stickers): take the cheapest. Scent-specific (oil): take the tightest that leaves a sensible margin, unless a bulk step makes the bigger bottle cheaper.
5
Check the plan against the packDivide each bought quantity by its per-candle use. If one material limits the run well below the others, consider pouring a few more candles or buying one more pack of the limiting item.
6
Write down every leftoverGrams of wax and oil, jars, wicks — with the order date. Next month's need is this month's requirement minus what is on the shelf.

Lids and labels (non-CSI, example ₹15.00 + ₹8.00 each — replace with your quotes) 100 your suppliers not in CSI total

Buy-now and buy-after-test still apply: the wax, jars and stickers can be bought now because every option uses them; the production wick waits for a passed burn test (CSI publishes no wick size per diameter — see the wick sample ladder), and the oil waits if the scent or load is not yet decided — 6% vs 8% covers that case.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Two 1 kg bottles of Gardenia would be the simplest order and the bigger sale — ₹8,664.00, leaving 185.6 g of one scent on your shelf. The practical choice is ₹643.98 cheaper and leaves 35.6 g. Buy that, unless you already know you will pour Gardenia again soon.

This page owns pack choice for minimum leftover. 105 or 110 owns the buffer that sets the requirement; two fragrances, one wax and four scents, one wax show how combining shared lines shrinks leftovers; first 100: bulk or small decides what to buy when; and the 100-candle template ends in a pack column. For larger quantities, 1.3 kg from 500 g and 1 kg packs and requirements below the minimum pack take the same method further.

Leftover wax is next month's stock. Leftover fragrance is a bet on next month's scent. Round them differently.

Frequently asked questions

How do I avoid leftover candle wax?
You rarely need to: wax shared by every candle carries into the next run. Choose the cheapest cover and record the remainder. Smaller bags give tighter fits — Chunks' 500 g bag is also its cheapest per kilo.
How do I avoid leftover fragrance oil?
Round each oil with 50 g and larger bottles to the tightest cover that keeps a small margin, and avoid 1 kg bottles for one-off scents — unless that oil's bigger bottle is genuinely cheaper per gram.
Is a 1 kg fragrance bottle cheaper than 500 g?
For most CSI oils, barely or not at all. Citronella is the big exception (₹7.67/g at 100 g, ₹2.89/g at 1 kg); Saffron Cedarwood is dearer per gram at 1 kg than at 500 g. Always compute.
Why is my candle order always slightly over?
Because packs come in steps. The minimum leftover is set by the smallest in-stock step — 500 g for Chunks, 50 g for most production oil, 5 jars, 20 Thin C1 wicks while the 10-pack is out of stock.
Should I buy 15 g fragrance bottles to match my need exactly?
No. 15 g carries a per-gram premium (Gardenia ₹7.00/g against ₹4.33/g at 100 g) and leaves no margin for a heavier pour. Keep 15 g for samples.
What do I do with leftover materials?
Record grams and pieces with the order date, and subtract them from the next run's requirement. Shared materials are stock; scent-specific oil is only stock if you make that scent again.
Round with a reason

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L; 200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax). The 200 g candle, 8% load, 4 tests, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss, 2% glass breakage, 4 spare wicks and the example lid and label costs are labelled working assumptions. Options were found by enumerating in-stock pack combinations; "practical" oil choices use 50 g and larger bottles with a ₹3-per-bottle tie-break. Leftover value = leftover grams × the bought bottles' average per-gram price. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — fragrance load up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperatures or shelf life published. CSI publishes no jar internal diameters or fill weights (except the Golden Aluminium Tin's 85 g and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar's 50 g), no wick-size-per-diameter chart, no throw, burn or cure data for any oil or wax, and no volume discount beyond the listed packs. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
