The 8 cm problem, and what to do about it

Start with the container, because it is the only component that fixes a physical constant. The diameter sets the surface area the flame has to melt; the fill sets how much wax and oil you buy. Every later decision — the wax, the load, the wick — is made against those two numbers. Which is why it matters that they are frequently not published.

Here is the honest position in the CSI container range. Most jar pages give a capacity in millilitres or grams and a height, and only a minority state a numeric diameter at all. Not one in-stock glass jar page states an 8 cm diameter. The closest listing to what you described is the matte and frosted family — Black Matte, White Matte, Clear Frosted, Black Glossy and their siblings, all at ₹354 for a pack of 5 or ₹708 for a pack of 10. Every one of those pages says the same two things: "a fill weight of 200 ml" and "Height 8 cm width 7 cm". Read that carefully. The 8 cm is the height. The width is 7 cm. And 200 ml is not 200 g.

Two more things about diameter that are worth saying plainly. First, the number that matters for wick selection is not the outer diameter printed on a listing but the width of the wax surface, measured inside the glass at the fill line. On a jar with any curvature or wall thickness those two numbers differ, sometimes by several millimetres — and several millimetres is exactly the margin that separates a full melt pool from a ring of unmelted wax. Second, a diameter you measured yourself is worth more than a diameter you read, because you can measure it at the fill line you actually use.

The wax, and what its page actually states

With the container fixed, the wax is next, because the wax fixes the load ceiling and the pour behaviour. For a jar candle sold as luxury, the useful filter is not price — it is how much the product page publishes. A wax that states a load range, an add temperature and a pour temperature lets you start your first test from the supplier's numbers. A wax that states nothing means your first test is also your first guess.

Read the last column and the third column together. The spread from the cheapest container wax to the dearest is ₹96.38 of wax inside a single 200 g candle — real money, but on a candle you intend to price as luxury it is not the decision. The decision is in column three. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is the only CSI wax that publishes a load range with a recommendation inside it, which means an 8% first pour sits at the bottom of a documented window rather than at the edge of an undocumented one. If the throw is quiet after a full cure, you have a stated route upward to 10% and then to 13% — and you know the wax was formulated to hold it.

The load: two ceilings, use the lower

Fragrance load is the single most misquoted number in candle making, for two reasons. The first is arithmetic: the same candle can be described two ways. This series states load as a percentage of total wax weight, because that is the wording CSI's own wax pages use — "Recommended fragrance load: 8% to 13% of total wax weight". On that basis a 200 g fill at 8% is 185.19 g of wax and 14.81 g of oil. The other convention treats load as a share of the finished candle, and the same jar then reads 7.41%. Neither is wrong. Mixing them in one workshop is what ruins a batch, so pick one, write it on your recipe card, and never convert in your head.

The second reason is that there are two ceilings, and they usually disagree. The wax page states the maximum the wax has been formulated to hold. The oil page states the maximum for that oil in a candle. In the CSI range the oil page is very often the lower of the two — Jasmine, Sandalwood, British Rose and Eucalyptus Spearmint all state "up to 10% for soy" while Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state up to 13%. Use the lower figure. And a page that states nothing is not permission: silence means you hold your starting load and prove it with a burn.

A word on those throw descriptions, because they are the reason this table exists at all. "Strong" on a product page is the supplier describing the concentrate, not measuring your candle. CSI publishes no hot-throw rating, no room-coverage figure and no burn-hour count, and neither does anyone honestly can — throw in a finished candle is produced by the interaction of the oil, the wax, the load, the wick, the cure and the room. What the page can tell you is the structure you are buying: a stated load ceiling, a stated flash point where one has been measured, a vanillin position, and a note pyramid. The wick bracket, not the wick

This is the part of the brief that no supplier can complete honestly, so here is exactly why. CSI publishes a diameter figure on only two wick pages in the whole range. Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made is described as "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", with a stated wick height of 10.16 cm. Eco Candle Wicks Loose is "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters" — about 5.08 cm. Neither of those describes a jar measuring roughly 7 cm across. And the workhorse of the range, Eco Candle Wicks in Thin (C1) and Thick (C2), states no diameter at all — the C1 and C2 designations appear only as size options, with no published guidance about which jar they suit.

So a shopping list that named your wick would be inventing it. What a shopping list can do is buy you the bracket. CSI lists two Eco cotton sizes plus wooden wicks — which means the third candidate in any honest test is not a third cotton size but a different wick type, with different behaviour. Pour four candles on each, burn them, and let the melt pool decide.

Twelve candles, four on each wick candidate, all at 8% of total wax weight. Twelve is the smallest run that gives every candidate two candles to burn early and two to burn after a full cure, and it is small enough that a failed formula costs one afternoon rather than one month. Quantities below include a 5% wastage allowance — a planning figure for spills, top-ups and what stays in the pouring jug, not a published specification — and are then rounded up to packs CSI actually sells, with the rounding cost shown.

Running the twelve-jar test so it answers something

The layout below holds everything constant except the wick, and then splits each wick across two burn dates so you can see what the cure contributed. Write the numbers down as you go; a test you cannot read back in three weeks is a test you will have to run again.

What to buy small, what to buy big

The rule is simple and it has nothing to do with per-unit price: quantity follows certainty. Before the test, every component is a hypothesis and the smallest pack is the right pack. After the test, the components that passed can move up the pack ladder and the ones that failed should not be reordered at all. That table is unusually flat, and it is worth saying why that is good news. On four of the six lines there is no listed reward for over-buying, which means starting small costs you almost nothing per candle and buys you the right to change your mind. The two lines that do reward scale — the fragrance oil and the wooden wicks — are precisely the two lines you should not commit to until the burn test has spoken, because they are the two most likely to change.
